@AlexBoucher ummm buddy, nice video. But the comicbook is clear, spiderman has superhuman strength and durability, that's why his arm doesn't get detached when he swings. If not for that then I believe stan lee would've designed a different mode of transportation.
I also loved how in TASM, they incorporated more spider like movements. Like when he's fighting the lizard in the school in the first movie and wraps around him like an actual spider would webbing up their prey when webbing him up. It's literally just a few seconds but SO cool and one of my favorite scenes from the movie. As much of a Raimi fanboy I am, I really love and appreciate the Webb movies as well.

While a regular person _would_ have trouble swinging, they'd most likely lose their grip before their arm would rip off, but Spider-man's super strength is what prevents him from injuring himself during swinging. They even comment on it in TAS when he loses his powers temporarily. He tries swinging and injures himself and says he can't swing without his spider-strength. His body is strong enough to lift 10 tons or more depending on the version, so supporting his own body weight is no problem at all. It's also why he's able to generate so much momentum by kicking his legs out when swinging. Basically like gymnasts do on the bars but with exponentially more energy.
There's also the fact that in the comics (and animated shows and movies at least) he can control what he sticks too with any part of his body so it's kinda impossible for him to lose his grip unless he chooses to
I appreciate the logical explanation to why he can swing but even with super strength spiderman couldn’t work in real life. He would pass out because of how our circulatory systems work compared to spiders. Basically ur brain needs blood and enough downward g force will drain yours of it.

Yep. Comic book movie makers these days pick up all the goofy things from comic books, but not the essence of the character. Give us the accurate mannerism of the characters. We don't want costumes to be too comic book accurate. We have comics for that. Give us a wolverine who goes full on animalistic berserker rage mode, a cyclops that braces itself before the powerful optic blasts, a Spidey who does make comic book poses.
0:10 Actually spiders do "swing'" from webs, kind of. When their born they'll create a web and blow in the wind till they reach a spot to make their home. Adult siders do it from time to time
@@AlexBoucher You should have wrote that in your script and said it then. If this were a talking head video with you just riffing off the cuff I could forgive it. But it's clearly a scripted and edited video, you had the chance to sanity check this. People are rightfully put off by the way you worded it, regardless of what your intent was.
I like how the Raimi movies made his swinging so graceful and balletic. It looks like he was in total control and had totally mastered this (admittedly) impractical mode of transportation. The Webb movies (especially the sequel) attempted to tie his swinging to real-world physics. When he shoots a line and hangs on, it jerks his entire body and he's seemingly at the mercy of the arc until he lets go. When he's falling, it's fast and frenetic. It doesn't feel like the Raimi movies where Spidey had the style and control of a skydiver during freefall. The MCU movies were serviceable, but didn't really have the personality of the other two (IMO). I felt more like an audience member watching him swing, while the other two immersed you into what Spidey was experiencing.
As a Tobey fan I'm gonna have to agree to disagree...the Webb movies are more real, it's even explained in the comics how fast of a rate Spidey swings at, and why his body doesn't rip off... The Webb movies show us in pov how Peter experiences swinging... There's no such thing as total control...Spiderman has no control of the velocity of his webs, he has the control of his movements...his control of his movements determine his swing....Andrew Spiderman was also in control,in fact he was more skilled than Tobeys spiderman in swinging. Tobeys Spiderman was just made to swing slower by the team behind the movies...
"And if they learn a lesson from Even Further back, instead of losing hundreds of millions of dollars, Risk losing a few stunt men instead" Is a wild thing to say not gonna lie Lol.
I mean, that's the job, right? Do the dangerous, possibly deadly stunts that the actors won't, or legally can't? It's literally the main risk of the job. It's why they get paid.
@@MarvNARK trying to make the films tie into future sequels was a nose dive from the start. Imagine how much better the first film would be if the lizard created the mutagenic spider in order to conserve the limited resources that oscorp was thinking of pulling back, and then the spider somehow got loose, and that explains why there's a spider-man making spider with recombinatory serum in its fangs somehow loose in the web room. That also explains Connors desperation to use the serum on himself with no further testing. He was running out of time and resources and had to act fast. The ending of the film is fine, with blank recombinatory serum landing on random New Yorkers possibly to explain for the extreme choice of becoming super villains in the future. As it is, there's some tie in with his parents being super spies who knew about this super spider, and oscorp is responsible for all the supers including Doc Ock... Which is somehow not as interesting and makes the world feel smaller, not like this chaotic universe where anything can happen...
Man I remember seeing Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters my senior year, that opening shot of him just immediately sky diving was incredible! The CG really pushed it in that movie, it all was just visually gorgeous from the suit, the scenery, to Emma Stone ;)
Listening to corridor crew about CGI, the number one rule to make something look real is to make intentional imperfections, but the Tom Holland suit doesn't have a single one, It's too perfect! The practical shot for the "boat pull" is so much better than the cgi one in the movie!
I think the spiderverse films are a prime example of how creative spidermans swinging, and overall fighting style can be, as they animators arent restricted by realism and practicality. I'de love to see if their talents could be applied to the live action films, as im sure they have had alot more room to experiment.
@@MarvNARK I mean, if people want the comic book poses and the "character" of Spidey as he's swinging, then the creativity is a necessary component, because I'm sure that doing acrobatics isn't the most straightforward or effective way of swinging around.
I'm sure they could make some nice stuff, but they'd be under a different set of restrictions with "real" people, since there's a limit to how much you can deform and bend a character that's supposed to be a real human, so they might employ more camera trickery like different angles to hide some things to make it feel more real.
I hate the phrasing, since it sorta implies the lives and safety of people matters less than the bottom line, but I definitely do think relying more on stunt work would dramatically increase the quality of these scenes. Also locking in pre-pro early so very don't have to make constant changes in production or in post. You don't need to worry about replacing scenes shot with a physical suit with CGI if you finalize that suit in the first place!
@@IAMA1 Agreed, but the phrasing was clearly intentional as a tongue-in-cheek jab to the industry. It's meant to be a joke, not an honest assertion that stuntmen are less valuable than cash lol.
TASM 2 swinging scenes looked like PS4 cutscenes. This guy only used the opening scene for his example because that's probably where they spent the most time on while making the film.
I watched the first Spider-Man movie when it came out, I was 7, and I want to thank every single person who worked on that movie, and helped shape it into the masterpiece it is.
TASM 2 swinging will probably never be topped again unless the VFX artist are given time. And also all the coordinators had a clear vision from Marc Webb to make sure it was physics based. The real question is that are the new coordinators that marvel hire willing to push the boundaries and put in the effort to make sure it looks good? Am not so sure I think marvel is practically comfortable with using lazy CG
The Raimi swinging scenes are my personal favorite because i like the wide shots and its just majestic. i love how gorgeous and smooth Spidey swings in those movies. The TASM ones are more realistic, and the close up camera angles do a great job to show off the speed adrenaline. theyre truly beautiful too. The MCU ones… theyre alright. lol

Spiders indeed do swing on their webs my friend. Have you never watched them? They make a very long web, then crawl up it to make it longer, then they jump to reach their destination. It’s how cob webs across walkways and sidewalks are made. I’ve even seen spiders use the branches in our trees for momentum. It’s incredible
Absolutely love this video! My one suggestion would’ve been to cover Dan Poole’s stunt work in his fan film “The Green Goblin’s Last Stand” from 1992. He has a making of movie too, definitely worth a watch! He swung from buildings without safety gear simply because his script called for it. Legend
Finally someone talks about how boring toms swinging is! Literally almost every shot is zoomed in on his face and Zendayas hair, its honestly so boring to watch tom swing😭😭
In one of the comics his clone kane lives out in the mid west without any buildings around, so he ends up just running and jumping everywhere or slingshotting himself with his webs.
To this day, my favorite swing style is Tobey's. I know it's not perfect, but the gracefullness paired with the sound score is just so awesome. But without a doubt, that swing from Andrew's spidey is the best. Tom's swinging style still feels... inexperienced. If I was Bane I would say to him "You swing like young man, with nothing held back. Admirable, but mistaken."
in my opinion, the epitome of spiderman’s web swinging actually came from the spiderverse movies, because those were animated, and thus not limited by real life, but also because the shading and general atmosphere mimics that of the comics’, and they actually get a bunch of classic comic poses for spiderman while swinging, and a few new but absolutely believable poses specifically for miles, like the leap of faith scene.
I prefer always the raimi films for their heightened, stylish look. They didn't really need to look "real" because it just was not their style and tones, and allowed them to make creative camera movements such as the camera going out of the reflection in doc ock's glasses.
One of the best swinging that they gave tom's spiderman was during the vienna attack, really showed creativity there. Shame that the one spiderman with the most appearance drew the short end of the stick when it came to swinging.
About that intro. I’ve seen spiders swing around on their webs before. Of course they didn’t use their hands or go from one to another but I’ve seen spiders swinging around on a string that made it look like they were flying
Aside from that end swing in SM (2002), SM2 (2004) really was the movie that, to quote IGN, made you FEEL like Spider-Man, lol. The carelessness of his swinging combined with some innovative shots like Peter passing "through" the truck and the little "woo"'s when he's pulling something more difficult off all made it look so much fun. Garfield's swinging wasn't bad, but it really got lost later with the MCU films..

With this much research going into each video I thought you would atleast have a million subs but to my horror you had less than 50k! You deserve wayy more than what you have man, keep these videos up and you'll blow up in no time bro!
I think the early 2000's may have been peak CGI so far. The reason was they spent as much time/effort on practical effects as they could and only filled in the gaps with CGI. This blend created the best effects. Even 2002 spiderman when he makes his first jump off the building is done practically and looks significantly better than the over-the-top CGI shown in 2017. But with movies like Dune Part 2 and The Batman getting back to the good blend between practical and CGI, hopefully we're trending back toward valuing practical effects.
0:30 Fun Fact.. They travel by using the wind, something called 'Ballooning.' Spiders can also use the Earth's electric field to propel themselves. When spiders sense an electric field, they stick their spinnerets into the air and release silk. This is called "tiptoeing" and indicates that the spider is ready to take off.🕸
I’m glad you made this video. Now we have a piece of media that expresses how I’ve felt about my favorite hero lately. Hopefully the Disney or whoever makes the next Spidey film not only takes reference & notes, but makes this part of a Spider-Man film a priority 🕷️
Spiderman one has the best web swing, the very first swing chasing uncle Ben murderer feels so raw, Tobey makes mistakes and corrects on the fly, you don't see that with the other two spider men.
I mean with the context of the mcu it makes sense that tom hollands spiderman has no wrinkles, cuz its a suite made by ironman which adjusts itself perfectly to the body. Also I agree when I saw that ending animation in no way home I also immediately saw how digital it looks.

Yeah, MCU!Spidey looks like a felt covered mannequin. It's weird that that's supposed to be a modern and high-tech take on the suit in and out of universe - it feels and looks cheap and uninspired. The lack of other textures gets to me most.
The irony of this is that Holland's practical suit looks amazing! It seems they had to redesign for some reason, and the only way to deal with that is to cgi over what had been filmed, and then they just kept doing that...

Yep. Comic book movie makers these days pick up all the goofy things from comic books, but not the essence of the character.
Give us the accurate mannerism of the characters. We don't want costumes to be too comic book accurate. We have comics for that.
Give us a wolverine who goes full on animalistic berserker rage mode, a cyclops that braces itself before the powerful optic blasts, a Spidey who does make comic book poses.

spiderman has powers, that's why his arm doesn't rip off
i think his point about arms getting ripped off was more about how there's no way to get any real world references
I meant if a real human attempted to swing through buildings the way Spider-Man does, his arms would rip off.
@@AlexBoucher You should have wrote that in your script and said it then. If this were a talking head video with you just riffing off the cuff I could forgive it. @@ChristianAkacro chill its not that deep
The ending of Spiderman 1 and the beginning of TASM 2 has to be the greatest web swinging ever

finally The Amazing Spiderman films are getting some much deserved love and attention
You forgot *more because these movies were still liked, it's just the larger scale of the second movie story to build up future ones was a nosedive
I liked Andrew Garfield, but he was held back by bad writing and narrative choices.
TASM movies are absolute garbage, and shouldn't be getting any attention.

The dude has notable super strength as far as super heros go.
He can swing however he damn pleases.

I'de love to see if their talents could be applied to the live action films, as im sure they have had alot more room to experiment.
really no need for creativity when the straightforward stuff will do but yes that is a very good assumption, even though it still is an assumption
Thank you for this. This is a real documentary, and I can not praise it enough.
“Risk a few stuntman” is crazy. But hey, if it gets us TASM 2 levels of swinging or even better. It was all worth it. 💀💀💀

Am not so sure
I think marvel is practically comfortable with using lazy CG
The Raimi swinging scenes are my personal favorite because i like the wide shots and its just majestic. i love how gorgeous and smooth Spidey swings in those movies.
The TASM ones are more realistic, and the close up camera angles do a great job to show off the speed adrenaline. theyre truly beautiful too.

Spiders indeed do swing on their webs my friend. Have you never watched them? They make a very long web, then crawl up it to make it longer, then they jump to reach their destination. My one suggestion would’ve been to cover Dan Poole’s stunt work in his fan film “The Green Goblin’s Last Stand” from 1992. He has a making of movie too, definitely worth a watch! He swung from buildings without safety gear simply because his script called for it. Legend
Kinda crazy that I also remember the impact of seeing the wrinkles in TASM 2, but didn't know everyone else liked it too!
Adding the spider man pizza theme to the background was a stroke of genius.
this was incredibly well made, the amount of research that had to be done for all the interesting details, well done!!
in my opinion, the epitome of spiderman’s web swinging actually came from the spiderverse movies, because those were animated, and thus not limited by real life, but also because the shading and general atmosphere mimics that of the comics’, and they actually get a bunch of classic comic poses for spiderman while swinging, and a few new but absolutely believable poses specifically for miles, like the leap of faith scene.
“With each character retaining their unique swinging behavior” 16:48 I like how Tom’s Spider-Man is the only one not striking a pose
Wait nvm wrong Spidey :(
I prefer always the raimi films for their heightened, stylish look.
Props on the director for doing the swing himself

One thing all these video essays have taught me over the years is just how carelessly made the MCU is/has become. There's no love anymore.
High-level video dude, great job!
Each passing day more people realize how underappreciated TASM were
Aside from that end swing in SM (2002), SM2 (2004) really was the movie that, to quote IGN, made you FEEL like Spider-Man, lol. The carelessness of his swinging combined with some innovative shots like Peter passing "through" the truck and the little "woo"'s when he's pulling something more difficult off all made it look so much fun. Garfield's swinging wasn't bad, but it really got lost later with the MCU films..

18:31 WHAT?!?!!!!😂
0:30 Fun Fact..
They travel by using the wind, something called 'Ballooning.' Spiders can also use the Earth's electric field to propel themselves. When spiders sense an electric field, they stick their spinnerets into the air and release silk. This is called "tiptoeing" and indicates that the spider is ready to take off.🕸
