I'm a massive Superman fan to begin with. This documentary is an incredible treatment and evolution of a nearly 90-year old IP. I love to see the history of the character through generations, how Sup has evolved, the various treatment of the IP, and the tide of fandom. Superman is a hero for all humankind, the greatest hero we have and ever will have. Superman embodies the greatest qualities that we as a people could ever hope for. He's an inspiration for everyone, he represents goodness and virtue to do the right thing, and those are qualities which humanity needs more than ever throughout our own history. Yet, Superman is also a mirror for our own lives, being an alien, an immigrant, he always seeks a normalized human life, and through his own personal struggles with humanity and wanting to be human, it makes him sympathetic and relatable to everyone. This documentary captures and shows all of this. (and much more)

the animation of those early Max Fleischer cartoons is still INCREDIBLE to watch. Even Superman the Animated Series didnt have that technique of using rich watercolor for skies and shadows. The scenes of Superman using his-heat-vision are beautiful. Someone has to combine the smooth beauty of the Fleischer cartoons with the character development, action, and plot of Superman the Animated Series. Can u imagine if Max Fleischer had worked with Bruce Timm on Superman the Animated Series ? What would that look like?
A SUPER documentary worthy of the first and greatest superhero of them all! I remember this documentary back when it first came out in 2006. I was enthralled as a youngster to learn about Superman's origins in the real world for the first time through this, and it still gives that same thrill, more that 15 years later. In retrospect, the only thing about this documentary I would be critical of is how little coverage the Death and Return of Superman story arc and the DCAU are given. It's clear that Bryan Singer (who also made this doc, in addition to Superman Returns), cares more about the live action Superman material, and does not give much thought to the comics or animation (aside from the first appearance and the 40's cartoon). Granted, more in-depth docs about the Death and Return of Superman story arc and the DCAU exist both on this channel and their respective DVDs, but it would have been nice if some more attention were given to those significant milestones in this documentary itself. Like many of my fellow commenters, I too want to see an update of this documentary to include material like the other 7 seasons of Smallville, Man of Steel/DCEU, New 52, Rebirth, Jon Kent, etc. Plus, how Superman impacted the creation of all the other Superheroes that came after him. Thanks for uploading this Warner Bros. Entertainment. Keep Flying!
Why doesn't DC release both the adventures of Superboy Pilot from the Smallville DVD, & the Superboy animated show for the TH-cam channel? How about a second season of Gods & Monsters Chronicles
We already have 3 versions of the death of Superman, and a follow up to one of them called reign of the supermen with superboy, cyborg Superman, eradicator, and that steel robot suit guy that put an S on his suit.

You made something special there. It happened organically, which is important for the best tales. No matter what the story changes to be the ideal that Super Man started can not be stopped. The idea that life is important and even the Joker is important cuz even the Devil might one day have a son that may save the universe.
I love superman as a child, later on I learned they had to write in his weaknesses because he seemed to perfect. Weaknesses and shortcomings make a fictional character more relatable to the public.

This is definitely worthy of a follow-up, but with all that's happened with Superman just in the 15 years or so since Superman Returns was released, it could easily go over three hours: - The final five seasons of Smallville - The 2008 Writers' Strike and how it impacted the development of a sequel with Singer, Routh, and company - New 52 - A New Direction/Man of Steel - Supergirl TV series (Season 1 on CBS) - Rebirth - Batman v Superman - The CW Has a New Hero and She's Bringing Superman With Her (Supergirl moves to The CW for its second season alongside Arrow and The Flash, and introduces Tyler Hoechlin as that universe's Superman) - Justice League: Two Directors, Two Different Visions - Various animated features with a changing of the (vocal) guard (from Tim Daly and George Newbern to Jerry O'Connell) - Superman & Lois (upcoming CW series)

Superman is my favorite DC superhero of all time, IDC if he's overpowered or not, I like his character
Same here! Fans of today just don't see how big he's always been since the old days and he's the one who came first before Batman and the others.
What makes Superman a hero is not his powers, but his heart
Superman is the Heart of Gold 💛
I have always had this reoccurring dream of someone doing a Golden Age Superman movie though, taking him back to where she still flies but epic to see him struggle with trains, buses, etc… it would look amazing taking Superman back to 1940’s or even just same struggling, decrease his power, so he does struggle and not invincible, it’s my dream,
Mine too, however, for a female character, I will always be for Wonder Woman ;)

(and much more)
Superman is universal whether they have him portrayed by a European actor or an African or Latino if they're honoring the memory of Superman God bless them.
Superman: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

SUPERMAN, who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, race a speeding bullet, bend steel with his bare hands. I'm more of a Batman guy but Superman is the backbone of DC Comics.
Just comics in general🤷🏽♂️
Well, I mean Batman would technically be the backbone of Detective Comics and Superman would be Action Comics's, but I see your point and I agree.
Superman is the backbone but batman is the rest of the body
Batman was a vigilante, who used clever inventions and human strengths, (not fantastic super-powers), to defeat criminals, (until the comics and TV goofed him up).
I’m more of a superman guy. I grew up in superman and Batman came in in 1989. Batman will always be number 2 to me
You're not going to find a better history of Superman anywhere else! This is excellent!
I totally agree with you I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Really? Here's a description of another super hero from 1933 (5 years before Superman) in the very first novel from 1933....

He was called a superman
He was also called The Man of Bronze
He had a hideout in the Arctic Circle
He named his hideout "The Fortress of Solitude"

Superman has always been my favorite super hero!... My first contact with Superman was the movies in which Christopher Reeves played Superman... I was hooked!... Decades later, Superman is still as amazing as ever!... He has integrity, he's honest, loyal, faithful, he has good values and principles, he's a real gentleman, he truly has a good heart, he has a lot of inner strength and, if there's bumps on the road, he picks himself up, dust himself off, and keeps on going...
In other words, he's the absolute perfect man and I'm the first in line to marry him! 👍😆😆😆😂😂😂

there will NEVER be another great production of Superman or other DC heroes characters...as that depicted in SMALLVILLE. Smallville in my opinion, was a masterpiece. It portrayed a great series of stories of Superman, and his life. But , it ALSO FOR THE first time, in a TV series...has enough time to spend character development, on Lois Lane, on the enemies of Superman [many were introduced...including Silver Banshee ] and OTHER DC heroes were shown. Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Black Canary and even a kid Flash, briefly. And frankly, BEFORE SHE WENT PYSCHO, Allison Mack WAS GREAT on the Smallville show. You can see the series on Hulu.

the animation of those early Max Fleischer cartoons is still INCREDIBLE to watch. Even Superman the Animated Series didnt have that technique of using rich watercolor for skies and shadows. The scenes of Superman using his-heat-vision are beautiful.

Loving that a version of Lex Luthor is narrating the story of Superman
You made something special there. It happened organically, which is important for the best tales. No matter what the story changes to be the ideal that Super Man started can not be stopped. The idea that life is important and even the Joker is important cuz even the Devil might one day have a son that may save the universe.
Comic superhero lore doesn't really play well if you attempt to cross it over to biblical scripture.
Now more than ever....the world needs this man...
Nothing will ever top John Williams musical scores. Michael Giacchino, Danny Elfman, and Brian Tyler all come close, but it can't top him.
I love superman as a child, later on I learned they had to write in his weaknesses because he seemed to perfect. Weaknesses and shortcomings make a fictional character more relatable to the public.
