I am sure that space can be used for storage and a spare can be placed in the bed. Under the truck would not work because that is where the batteries are located. You have a great point that if you get a flat while hauling some gravel in your $80k truck, it would be very inconvenient

Hi Ben I think it's a little bit like saying why didn't someone marry so and so and not the person they're with now. Tesla is right to have come up with that cyber truck design. The more choice we have the better. I would buy a tesla cybertruck just so that I look different, simple as that. Your Rivian, My Tesla!
I use the frunk every day to store my laptop and it is very convenient for 3-5 bags of groceries. I even hauled 3 50# bags of concrete in the frunk and a bunch more in the trunk. My only complaint with “frunk” is with autocorrect changing it to trunk or drink! I wouldn’t consider another car without one.

This is a medium size truck with a full size price. I think the size is going to limit the adoption from the regular f150/1500 crowd. The interior volume and dimensions appear tacoma or ranger size. To bad they didn't invite TFL truck to this pr event. I guess they didn't want truck guys there.
Question for people who tow: Do people who hall do so for roadtrips/ long distance drives? Because I thought most people who hall stuff tow a boat to the nearest lake or something like that. So a 300 mile truck (100-120 miles max hauling) should be enough to get you to your towns camp ground, or a few towns over even. Anyone with experience have an answer for me?
We haul a trailer with 2 snowmobiles in it every other weekend December thru April. Depending on where we go, its 275-400 miles each way into real remote areas of Maine or Quebec. This truck - and all electric trucks coming out, are completely useless for our needs.
@@bedlambikes good to get some information from people who do haul. I guess people who haul will have to wait until the chargers are built up in at least ever other town (sounds like they will be there in 5-10 years) Also, driving slow is drastically more efficient so that (plus 5% increase of energy dense batteries=5% more range per year) should make these trucks useful possibly around 2025 Considering Tesla improved their Model S range of 335 to 405 in 4 years, it seems like a matter of time. So would you consider an EV truck that went 500 miles and get maybe ~250 miles full haul going 15-25mph slower (and a 15 minute charge ever 35-70 miles apart)
@@matthewboyd8689 No. We haul thru Northern Maine as well as Vermont. It's all elevation changes along these routes as well which will deplete batteries even harder than just your average towing speed. These are areas that many gas stations often don't even have new school GAS PUMPS yet never mind supercharging stations! (gas pumps that run off debit cards, have vapor lock spouts, etc...Hell some of them don't even have digital displays on them) These areas represent old school America and that's what makes these trips so special to begin with. It's an escape from the insanity of an agenda driven world. I estimate electric trucks and the charging needed for them is still over 20 years away. Another viable solution may be to have battery packs on the trailer that tow vehicles can slave power off of.... more expense, more weight and more nuclear and coal powered plants required to charge all these batteries.
@@bedlambikes I agree that charging being 20 years out might be a good guess. So considering battery improvements of 5% yearly would be ~60% better than today (not including any new battery technology leaps) we could see a Tesla go from 500 mile Cybertruck today to 800 miles between 2030 and 2035 What range do you think would be adequate for such trips?
Not a regular here, know Ben from OLF, and having heard him rave about this for years on there I feel very happy that he finally got to do this and wasn't dissapointed. Also a good video and looks like a really awesome car which, unlike most EVs, might actually make sense for some people to own for better reasons that hating Elon Musk too much to get a Tesla.
Okay, I'll try this, again. The features of this truck look pretty nice, and I'll even accept that the price pretty much falls in line with its luxury model internal combustion engine counterparts. However, for those of us who actually live in Colorado, and like to go camping in the high country, the range is kind of a problem. If you pause the video when Ben displays the map, you can see that the Colorado Front Range cities, as well as the I-70 corridor, have the charging stations you'd need. So, if all you want to do is drive around where all the people live, or head up to go skiing, then this truck would work fine -- and Ben says as much. However, the *whole point* of camping in Colorado is to get away from everything, and visit the wilderness for a few days. The idea is to get to an area remote enough that your cell phone has no bars, there's no sound of electronic devices, and you can't hear a bunch of generators going. (People who travel to Colorado in huge RVs miss most of what makes this such a great place to visit, in the summer.) The Rivian could get you up to a campsite in a remote area of Colorado from one of the Front Range cities, but you'd have trouble getting back home, again. But, that's the same thing I can say about any electric vehicle, here. As with any other EV, I'll have to wait a few years, and keep an eye on the range number, and then take another look should it reach 450-500 miles, consistently and reliably. Right now, though, a hybrid is probably about the best you can do, if you like back-country camping, in Colorado.
Idea: How about an option for fixed vs dynamic range estimation Or do what Chevy did with the Bolt and display 3 (current expected range, max range if you drive more efficiently, minimum range for going all out) Choices stop complaints (brought to you by the Matrix)
You sort of glossed over the range topic. Would have been nice to see what your actual range numbers were for your trail run. We have channels like TFL telling people they can only go 3 miles on a charge that is standard rated for 50.
I actually love that Rivian uses a range algorithm that takes your driving style into consideration. That way, you get a realistic range, instead of Tesla's overly optimistic, fluffed ranged, and then half-way through your drive in the Tesla, you get major range anxiety as you watch the predicted range drop like an anchor compared to the miles actually driven.
Well I'm waiting for my Canyon Red truck with the Ocean Foam white interior. Ordered mine Nov 29th, 2018. Nice review, and certainly an awsum truck. Just wish Rivian would tell us what's going on? Just ordered my Ford Maverick Hybrid today, 11/1/21 and paid $22,800 with a bed mat, floor mats, tow hitch and power moonroof including delivery! Unbelievable! Quickly find a Ford dealer that would have you buy one at MSRP! A brand new crew cab truck that gets 44 mpg in the city, with aircon and cruise control and power windows! What are you waiting for, get it now!
Hey Ben. Did I miss the range numbers on a trail you did? The whole thing is kinda pointless if all you can go like 50 miles. There was an off-road test of the Wrangler 4xe, by TLF I believe and while having a range of 25 miles on a pavement (it has very small battery) they have recorded a range of 3! miles off-roading in pure electric mode. Using the same logic the Rivian could run the the 40 miles offroad? So what was the mileage? :)
Ok, highest point some 3500 meters. I just have this funny "altitude" experience with American tourists in Paris, France, when I was visiting there myself, walking up the stairs of the Arc de Triomphe. At one point, this slow walking couple just in front of me, in the narrow staircase bursts out a sigh and says; "you know, you can really feel the altitude affect you here"... Yeah, not really ma'am 😂
I have been waiting patiently to get your review / impressions on the Rivian R1T and you did not disappoint. The one thing still missing is Jennie's perspective. Hopefully this can be done in the near future because I would be looking at it as a family vehicle and I would watch that video with my wife. Also, I want to see coverage related to the potential of Rivian putting a factory in Fort Worth, TX the same way Tesla is investing in their factory in Austin, TX.
@@BenSullinsOfficial I have never owned a truck but am open to it if it has 5-passenger cabin, but SUV would probably be better for us. I love the look of both the R1T and R1S.
I've wanted one since I first heard about them in 2108, but I do plan to tow a camper. What did the range change to when you put it in tow mode? I've heard we can expect up to 50% reduction in range.
They drove one from the southern tip of south america to los angeles 2 years ago on a tv show. The truck was very proven already. Their only mistake was partnering with ford, who turned around and made their own truck instead. The rivian will be better, but ford is just going to market all over them. Rivian was going to build chargers, but if tesla opens superchargers, rivian will gain no advantage and that probably means their truck sales will be be limited due to ford having a name brand that most truck owners will look at first.
Awesome video and review!!! I had no idea this vehicle even existed. Questions I always wanted to ask… in the event of natural disasters/ power loss/ off grid travel, how in the world do you charge this vehicle??? Why hasn’t the industry leaned more towards solar charging capabilities?? Having an electric vehicle is awesome but if there’s no electricity available what’s the advantage?
To be fair, we can't refine oil into diesel without electricity either if things get *really* bad! You can charge the Rivian off solar but you're looking at a static installation at an off-grid house, and not something small that you could take with you. Cars that do have solar panels integrated into the bodywork of the car only get a trickle-charge at best, giving you a mile or two extra per day. Beyond that, in an emergency you can tow the Rivian behind something oil-powered and charge it that way, but given the weight is approaching 3 tons that would need to be a good sized vehicle as well. For perspective, the battery in the Rivian could run your home for 5-10 days, it's not a small amount of electricity, so solar panels on the roof or whatever aren't anything like efficient enough yet to make a big difference to your range. You can buy large panels that fold down into a rucksack that are for charging electric bicycles in the wilderness, but even something 10ft² takes a day or so just to charge a bicycle battery. The advantages off road are that you're increasing your range a little bit every time you brake, whereas ICE obviously just use energy the whole time it's running; you have all of the torque available all of the time; independent wheel control meaning you can't get stuck in 'cross-axle' situations, and wheels have less slip; a lower centre of mass so you're less likely to roll; to name a few - there's probably more as well - but alas if you're driving 150+ miles into the wilderness I think you're still better off with an ICE vehicle because of the issues with charging, at least for now. That doesn't mean we can't adapt and go less than 150 miles off road in the meantime though.
Elon hinted at a solar-panel tonneau cover option possible for the Cybertruck, or some others... that would be the perfect apocalypse-mobile! But the other way around, powering stuff FROM the truck, is a lot more likely to happen, and more useful.. here, the R1T and even more so, the F150 Lightning (can even power your house, let alone 240V tools), are superior. Light the way!
I have asthma and altitude can really hurt, especially when ascending quickly. Like in Maui going to the top of the volcano. It is so good that someone brought some oxygen
I appreciate yours, Zack (Jerry Rig Everything), and Motortrend's opinions, but Rivian should have included TFL as well. Since they are serious about offroading and towing. Rivian shouldn't have rejected them just because they may have had weaknesses of the vehicle. I would like to know about charge times. How it really compares to the Jeep Wrangler, Raptor, Powerwagon, 4Runner, Landcruiser, Bronco, etc? When will the rollout of Rivian's adventure network begin? Who is supplying the batteries for the R1T and R1S? Will it be able to use the Tesla supercharger network? Can it be modified like other overlanding vehicles?
Good introduction to the truck. Question: Did you try voice response? That is always something that varies widely from instance to instance. If it was good, it might help with your very reasonable comments on the HVAC vent adjustments. In a hot climate, grabbing and adjusting the vents is quite frequent. I'm a bit annoyed I haven't been invited to one of these yet. I ordered back at the LA Auto Show time. Its unclear to me why they went with such a short bed like a Honda Ridgeline. Another foot at least would have done no harm and enable even better glamping setups.
Rivian starts at 67,500 f-150 starts at 39,900. Cheapest F-150 XLT with extended battery is 57,000 that has 100’s of dealers for possible service. How many Rivian service centers? How many Rivian parts laying around for repairs?
Yeah, maybe I might feel differently when seeing it in person but seeing it on the T.V. I don't care for the exterior looks specifically the front end just looks odd to me and the rest looks generic truck like. I'm holding out for the Cybertruck both on appearance and specs.
Yeah the stadium lights are for sure an acquired taste. My buddy is getting a Rivian R1S and I think the SUV version looks better than the truck--he even likes those weird headlights =)
People break vents all the time. My wife always changes them. Now my M3 automatically changes them back to the way we set them when we switch drivers. Great feature that no one mentions.
1 out of every 20 trucks I see on the road are actually hauling something either with a trailer or in their bed. The average transaction price of a new truck is currently at 50K which are well equipped, but far from fully loaded. Fully loaded trucks MSRP around at least 70K+ With that in mind, for the performance, luxury, and tech you receive, 60-75K (included tax credit) is not too bad. Obviously midsize vs full size but it has plenty of space for what 90% buyers use their trucks for (daily driving, dropping kids of, road trips, OCCASIONAL bed use, and RARELY towing). Edit: I believe they should offer a dual motor AWD version with half the HP/Torque for 10K off with the same size battery. Would be nice cheaper option because 3 seconds to 60 is stupid quick and the quad motor versions weighs so much. So a dual motor version would be cheaper, more efficient, and handle slightly better.

I am sure that space can be used for storage and a spare can be placed in the bed. Under the truck would not work because that is where the batteries are located. You have a great point that if you get a flat while hauling some gravel in your $80k truck, it would be very inconvenient
Yeah, I recently had that issue in my car with a trunk full of heavy things. I suppose you maybe could put the spare in the frunk.
Your load capacity will be very limited with that trap door over the tire. This won't be a work truck...too fragile.
I own an F150 4x4 and live in Colorado and take trails like in the video once in a (great) while. I can see from the video that you guys were driving up some pretty tough terrain and it looks like the R1T handled it very well indeed. I'm impressed.
On a prepared course?
Altitude sickness is tough! Colorado really tests your limits.
How was the sound system in the Rivian…comparably to my Model Y?
Altitude sickness is real. I can’t even take the altitude at the top of the tram in Palm Springs. When you said 9,000 up to 12,000 feet I was already thinking “no way for me” before you showed you had altitude sickness. Glad you got through it. Nice looking trucks!
Breathe deep. Never had altitude sickness.
I wonder if Elon’s secret Specs for the cybertruck is to straight up drive it on mars. 😉

Ben NEVER had a truck, NEVER WIIL have a truck! Soyboy going offroad...
Rivian > Tesla
@@tamie341 says who🤔?
How is the seat comfort compared to Tesla?
I use the frunk every day to store my laptop and it is very convenient for 3-5 bags of groceries. I even hauled 3 50# bags of concrete in the frunk and a bunch more in the trunk. My only complaint with “frunk” is with autocorrect changing it to trunk or drink! I wouldn’t consider another car without one.
So these cars were maxed out with all features. How much is it?
How is the sound system? What does it compare to? I havent heard any one say anything about it. As someone who always gets the upgraded audio package sound is important to me. So a comparison to what it is close to would be nice.
How responsive are the screens? Similar to the Tesla’s?
How long do you actually think until there is ANY sort of charging network? 6 months, 12, 18?
Wish it was close in time wise
They can use any of the existing ones, but they have their plans on their site if you want to see more details
Great review Ben. Thank you.
Really? A lot of the 'men' got sick because they were in the mountains? Did you check to see if you brought you’re Apple bags? This is a beautiful truck. Just the right size. I’m not into electric vehicles but I think I would buy this if were 10- 20 thousand cheaper. The infotainment screen being integrated into the dash is a big plus. Come on Tesla, rethink your ugly add on screens. This looks like a work of art.
Will you keep your pre-order?
I want one now but can I custom color
Why the title change?

This is a medium size truck with a full size price. I think the size is going to limit the adoption from the regular f150/1500 crowd. The interior volume and dimensions appear tacoma or ranger size. To bad they didn't invite TFL truck to this pr event. I guess they didn't want truck guys there.
FTL has shown some bias against electric including intentionally setting up situations to fail so I am not surprised they were not invited.
Question for people who tow:
Do people who hall do so for roadtrips/ long distance drives?
I guess people who haul will have to wait until the chargers are built up in at least ever other town (sounds like they will be there in 5-10 years)
Also, driving slow is drastically more efficient so that (plus 5% increase of energy dense batteries=5% more range per year) should make these trucks useful possibly around 2025
Considering Tesla improved their Model S range of 335 to 405 in 4 years, it seems like a matter of time.
So considering battery improvements of 5% yearly would be ~60% better than today (not including any new battery technology leaps) we could see a Tesla go from 500 mile Cybertruck today to 800 miles between 2030 and 2035
What range do you think would be adequate for such trips?
Buen trabajo Ben! Espero verte nuevamente pronto. Muchos exitos!
Like the haters know him. I will love Elon if he gives me half.
(People who travel to Colorado in huge RVs miss most of what makes this such a great place to visit, in the summer.)
The Rivian could get you up to a campsite in a remote area of Colorado from one of the Front Range cities, but you'd have trouble getting back home, again.
I like urban camping, you know, like cabins, motels, hot water, stuff like that.
Oh wow that makes sense I saw one of these while driving to my cabin in Colorado. It’s a super cool truck
CTIS for the tires instead of the compressor would have been amazing.
I don’t know why all off readers don’t have that!
Prone to failure and need constant maintenance. Adding Tibus portal hubs would make it less of an issue though.
Ccs plug?
Idea:
How about an option for fixed vs dynamic range estimation
Or do what Chevy did with the Bolt and display 3 (current expected range, max range if you drive more efficiently, minimum range for going all out)
Choices stop complaints (brought to you by the Matrix)
Or just fix the software like Tesla does.
You sort of glossed over the range topic. Would have been nice to see what your actual range numbers were for your trail run. We have channels like TFL telling people they can only go 3 miles on a charge that is standard rated for 50.
so they have gearguard, but do they also have dashcam functionality?
Good question, not sure
Ben I was wondering how car seats would fit in the back and did both premium and non premium come with heated and ventilated seats?
Great episode, Ben!
What version of the software are you talking about?
How did the seats compare to a Tesla, comfort wise? I feel like every other car has such hard seats.
Ben great video! How was the sound insulation in the cabin?
Seemed decent, as in I didn't notice it being overly loud
Love everything about it but those vertical headlights.
Altitude sickness? What height was that?
Ok, highest point some 3500 meters. I just have this funny "altitude" experience with American tourists in Paris, France, when I was visiting there myself, walking up the stairs of the Arc de Triomphe. At one point, this slow walking couple just in front of me, in the narrow staircase bursts out a sigh and says; "you know, you can really feel the altitude affect you here"... Yeah, not really ma'am 😂
I miss Paris
Ben, you got to ride in the back seat of the Cybertruck at its launch; how does that interior compare to the R1T? Is it as luxurious and comfortable?
I wouldn't say CT was luxurious. More spartan like the 3/Y. I'd say the Rivian felt more finished whereas CT was still just a prototype
Good review, but the price is too high for a new unproven vehicle.
What about the key? Bluetooth on phone to just walk up to vehicle or standard type fob?
I have been waiting patiently to get your review / impressions on the Rivian R1T and you did not disappoint. The one thing still missing is Jennie's perspective. Hopefully this can be done in the near future because I would be looking at it as a family vehicle and I would watch that video with my wife.
Also, I want to see coverage related to the potential of Rivian putting a factory in Fort Worth, TX the same way Tesla is investing in their factory in Austin, TX.
R1S hopefully soon
@@BenSullinsOfficial I have never owned a truck but am open to it if it has 5-passenger cabin, but SUV would probably be better for us. I love the look of both the R1T and R1S.
It would be cool if they could have a mode that would suggest what actions need to be taken to get the rated range that they advertise .
I've wanted one since I first heard about them in 2108, but I do plan to tow a camper. What did the range change to when you put it in tow mode? I've heard we can expect up to 50% reduction in range.
Looks like Rivian put a lot of thought into the R1T. Was the range as advertised?
Towing is an issue of aerodynamics, as soon as people make aero trailers, then towing will not be anymore of an issue than it is for gas trucks.
These are great features, but as a $70,000 truck it should have these features
Great review! I guess now we have to see if they can produce them in any meaningful numbers.
They lose money on every one they sell.
The price for me is too high but it’s a nice truck. I’m probably going to get the cybertruck though
@T C I’m willing to wait. My model 3 is great for now
That truck looks like an absolute powerhouse! It is great to see those spec in action. Thanks for a great video Ben and welcome to Colorado 😊
Looks basic at its best!
How is Rivian at parking? In city
I have issues with higher elevation too! I’m glad I’m not the only one, I love Rivian!
I bet the screen/UI was broken. Are these your thoughts or were you told to stick to certain things? Did Rivian have to approve this review?
Nice opening drone shots. Were they DIY?
Some mine some theirs from the day. They had a whole content team taking footage during our ride
For the price I would prefer Honda Ridgeline + Honda Talon + 16' aluminum trailer. Obviously not an electric setup.
I have 12 solar panels on my roof, might take a while to charge but the gas station won't have any power to pump.
I have asthma and altitude can really hurt, especially when ascending quickly. Like in Maui going to the top of the volcano. It is so good that someone brought some oxygen
I went skiing in Breckenridge a couple of years ago. Yes, it's altitude sickness city.
I really wish they didn't go the way of Tesla and omit Apple CarPlay. That's the biggest bummer of this truck that I can find!
Lets see, 99% wanted a short bed and 1% wanted a longer bed, who wins?
@@tedmoss I doubt those are the true numbers, but I agree that you role with the bulk of the market on any first product.
Great call out on the air vents. I would want them to be mechanical as well. Less electrical draw and fewer electrical motors to fail over time.
Fully loaded trucks MSRP around at least 70K+
With that in mind, for the performance, luxury, and tech you receive, 60-75K (included tax credit) is not too bad.
Great video!! Finally an in depth honest take. Can’t wait for mine!
I like Zack's video the best

Well Motortrend drove them across the country..
TFL can cry a River - Rivian doesn’t owe them anything.
