I live in Minnesota. Almosy everyone here who owns a pickup for recreation, tows something. Might be a fishing boat, a travel trailer, an ice fishing house,, whatever. My gas powered pickup gets 20-22 mpg, in summer months, when not towing anything. In colder winter weather, that goes down to 17-18 mpg. Hook my fishing boat to the back, and you're looking at 12-13 mpg. I don't know how a towed load, or cold temps will affect the Rivian, but if it's a 40% reduction in range, you'd be out of power after a 2 1/2 to 3 hr drive. If the advertised range of the Rivian is 300 miles, what is it really when towing something and it's below freezing outside? I don't think, at this point in the development of battery technology, that you can produce a viable pickup that would be used the way most people use pickups. When we see advertised ranges in the 600-700 mile range, it starts to make sense.
Couple things for me. It’s extremely heavy. Published gvwr of over 8500 lbs and payload of around 1700 lbs means this thing is nearly 7000 lbs. plus I don’t trust the suspension to be reliable long term. Then there is the range. No low range means the high speed gearing will make the motors work harder and generate more heat. How far will it go off road? I can literally double my range with fuel cans. . It’s a cool truck, but I don’t see it fulfilling my needs. The 20 mile 4xe wrangler with low range for its motor gets about 3 miles of off road range per TFLs tests. So what does a 300 mile R1T get? 45 miles under similar conditions?
@@KTMcaptain my exact questions…let’s see it reviewed by a true off-road test comparable with similar sized gas trucks in the wild-real rock-slider needed crawling, trail running, over landing 3day+ trips, etc! Was this filmed near Ouray, CO? I've gone offroad out there; it is a lovely place. Not a fan of the spare tire being accessed from in the bed -- if you get a flat, then you need to empty out the bed to get at the flat. The traditional mounting of the spare tire underneath the truck is a better solution.
That's true about the spare, but then again how often do you have to use it? And by being in the bed it stays clean and will probably last longer. But yes, in a worst-case scenario where you have dirt or rocks or something else hard to take out and put back in it wouldn't be ideal.
Solution - if you are ever carrying something heavy take the spare out. Rarely is there ever a situation where you won't be able to physically remove the stuff from the bed quickly. I'd rather have it there than under the truck where I have to get dirty and disgusting to get it out. Not to mention it's a crap location for offroading

I’d love to get one. I’ve owned two TESLAs and love EVs! This is a great job by Rivian. Two things for me before I buy…need to know how servicing will happen and the quality of the truck….Also, not sure about that design feature putting the charging door at the front left. That’s a high percentage area for fender benders…
It's funny how they advertise this truck as capable for overlanding i mean it's good offroad but overlanding? What happens when you run out of juice it's not like you can carry additional battery pack with tho.
I’ve heard of Rivian for a long time now and they look to have produced something really great but my only issue is, if you are trying to get into the truck market by putting your base model around 70,000 and that price is for almost a gmc denali fully loaded or even a ford raptor fully loaded, it’s hard to make a consumer choose this over any solid working truck that has been trusted for years for that amount of money. I just don’t think electric belongs in the truck market, but definitely looking forward to seeing the new suv model. Just kinda scared to see the price on those.
So you think you’ll be able to buy the Ford Lightning with all the options the R1T has for $40k? 🤣. $70-90k easy plus dealing with dealer markups from a traditional dealer. Good luck
Pretty good. They will have to re-engineer the tailgate, gear tunnel, and bed cover slide for cold climates. No way those buttons on the top of the bed rail will work after snow/ice buildup.
Was thinking the same thing while watching it... Buttons do not work well when caked in ice. Also I think the charger access door may have to be redone for the same reason.
@@mitchstein288 Right good catch, I saw that later too, same issue. Rivian seems to be heavily biased with tech engineering, but they need to also pay attention to practical automotive engineering. Hope they fix it.
