BMW M2 CS 2020 review | fastest and lastest M2 driven | Autocar

- Ah, the BMW M2. The great small coupe from BMW. First there was the standard M2, then came the M2 Competition and now, in the last few months of its production life, there is this: the 2020 M2 CS.
It's rather expensive, at £75,000, but it should also prove rather good. It has more power than either the M2 or the M2 Competition - some 444bhp, in fact, which is good for 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds dead and a top speed of 174 mph.
It is finer, sharper, keener - though no lighter than standard - and could just give the top spec Porsche 718 Cayman a good scrap.
But just how good is it? Let's see what it's like on British roads.

Disagree with the sentiments that Matt is a boring presenter. What he is, is super knowledgeable, and is able to clearly discuss the characteristics of the drive and how engineering design impacts performance. And as an aside, he's a pretty accomplished driver as well....he's got plenty of videos where he's sliding them around with the best of them. As someone who is on the fence about the M2 Competition or Cayman (GTS 4.0) as my next vehicle, I found the video worth every minute. Thanks for sharing your insights!
I was expected something more "passionate driving style review" because of the title of the video but no, i just remembered my days of high school.
This is more a buyer review than a car guy review....its an BMW M2!!!! Not a a Corolla! Rev the engine! Try to go a bit sideways! Put some energy on the driving!!!! It is not a taxi!
This video is sooo boring
Sorry but this is a waste of a car review and a waste of every fan time
If you want to learn about the car, how it feels compared to a different engine layout, pros and cons, then this is for you. If you want videogame action instead of a car review, someone screaming and going sideways, the same image for any RWD, then look elsewhere
What energy? This is an appropriate review and don’t forget no matter how strong its performance it is still a road going car supposed to be doing 50 km/hour most of the time on roads with other users like the elderly, the young and those who don’t deserve to be killed by fanatic reckless drivers !! You buy this car for its looks and feel, not as a street racer.
So you want him to just slide around learn nothing about the car. It's a great car review you clearly arent true petrol head
@@user-js2dr9gv1u this is an Autocar video not a milenial with a go pro video ...
The best M car Bmw has ever made, i'll buy one in the future when it loses half of its value
It won’t
@@gregmayled You must be braindead.
@@gregmayled no not this exact one , i'll get the competition
@@josephspectre8810 yeah. This variant will be collectible like the 1M was.
Increase your current value to a level that you'll never have to look at price tag of another BMW.
From fellow BMW fan
The rear geo, people say it changed, but when you look at part numbers it’s the same on M2, M2 Comp and M2 CS.
Great review and indeed buy the one you want. My ultimate car would be a GT4, but I haven’t been fortunate enough to drive one.
All the part numbers in the suspension are the same as you say, the differences are the strut brace and software for the steering, diff, mdm mode.
Both the software and brace can easily be fitted to the original m2.
Also he wrongly mentions that the original m2 didn’t have a solid mounted subframe.
It does!
So I never comment on social media as mostly I cant be ar$ed but as I have read some comments I felt compelled! If haters are not interested in understanding buyer reviews for cars which are mostly road driven cars (which is 98% of what a M2CS will do) then why sit though the content? I am an avid BMW owner and have a 2019 M4 Competition Pack as my daily driver for over a year - the comments regarding British roads and comfort settings on the dampeners have made me think about my personal M1 setup for everyday drive! This is balanced feedback and I have enjoyed the review from a seasoned professional. We all love Chris Harris &n his content as he is a legend (no sledging from me here) or Joe Achilles (also one of my favourites who reviewed the CS against an M2 Competition just today) - but “F-Me” for those haters out there, I ask you just how many actually could do a review any where near as quality as this on UK roads during Covid. Crazy comments! Keep it coming Matt & Autocar - I’m going to watch pretty much all your content!
Still boring, his voice tone doesn't help.
Well said!
I feel exactly the same - you hit the nail on the head.
Thanks Matt Prior for another well balanced, informative review which considers the relative merits of the engineering path chosen by BMW against that of its key rivals. For those lamenting the lack of skids, may I suggest Mcdonald's on a Friday evening may be more up your street.
This is my dream car, I’ve owned an M3 and this the closest to my old E46 M3.
Intelligent, analytical comment Matt and despite some of the comments below, some of us do want to know an experienced tester's opinion about how the CS compares with other driver's cars from Porsche et al. Most of us spend 99% of our time driving on public roads and that is the environment we want to know about most when deciding where to put our hard-earned £££s.
My god, all cars should be reviewed by Chris Harris, Steve Sutcliffe, Jethro Bovingdon or Henry Catchpole and that’s it! I’m sure you’re a nice bloke, but you just don’t seem to have any passion for the motor vehicle.
Mike Wilcox thanks Mike, not really sure how you’ve derived something sexual out of the comment, maybe you take it up the arse? Who knows!
Henry is so overrated...
Only Chris Harris!
Matt is great!
Absolutely fantastic review, very knowledgeable and extremely insightful.
Would you say the M2CS in comfort suspension is softer than M2 Competition ? Also, is Porsche GT4 in comfort suspension softer than M2 Competition ?
How an earth do you clean that alcantara-wrapped steering wheel??? The motor industry has somehow made a myth about alcantara and associated it with sportiness, when in fact it's a cheap material that is so hard to clean. With a normal leather wheel, I just use a moist towel with some Dettol and it's nice and clean.
Yeah it's like fake suede, has good grip but turns to crap very quickly. Much rather leather/fake leather
There are alcantara cleaners and brush... pretty simple.
This "review" had me reviewing my priorities. Insanely boring.
Most boring video of the most exciting BMW we have atm. Get someone else in.
It’s heavier than a stripper M4. That’s a shocker
Seems pretty amazing either way 🏎
It's a Competition with an engine retune and stickier tyres
That's a review of the m2cs ? I must have missed it then !!!
Nothing about this makes me want it more than a M2 Comp.
The M2 CS is the icing on the cake to what is already a brilliant car in the Competition.
Better blue available, with gold wheels, and a carbon roof. I'd pay the extra if I had the cash.
Blue and gold wheels is a Subaru Impreza STi. This CS is the *marketing* icing on the cake. On merit, the Competition is the better car - without the weight penalty and complexity of adaptive suspension. This CS is just that plus an engine retune and stickier tyres. Not a halo car like the M3 CSL or M4 GTS.
@@nessuno5403 Of course it's a Halo Car, BMW isn't dumb enough to butcher their top tier car segment. The blue and gold combination is trash; Subaru can lay claim to those colorways for all I care.
@@Alby911 halo car is one more evolved and this barely is. An M Performance carbon roof and bonnet is available on M2C. The CS wheels are a recycled design. There is no weight saving or upgraded engine components. Brakes ar similar if you don't option carbon ones. It's just an accessory pack. Also, when M2C launched, M engineers said there was no need for adaptive dampers, which is what makes this CS heavy.and the M boss talks about a CSL. If there was no Competition, this CS would be king.
I'm seriously considering buying an Alpine a110 which you appear to be a fan of, would love your opinion on which you would buy out of the M2 Comp, 718 or the Alpine. Thanks for the videos, so much better than the tripe from all these supercar car hopping TH-cam xxxxxxxs
Why the Gulliver-sized steering wheel? I don't get it.
While this is nice, I’d take an old M2, add carbon parts on it , rigidly mount the rear subframe and a set of coilovers to complete the car
All M2's have a solid mounted rear subframe.
And buy a bag of rice to complete the project
@@f00lxpl 5kg
QUANTUM not bad!
@@windnsea03 thank you - the myth that the M2C got different suspension than the OG needs to die. It’s all the same part numbers.

I enjoy how particular you are with the facts and details
Ignore the hate comments, they just wanted to sit and watch you yell and say "WOW COOL SO FAST"
man, what a lethargic review, get more excited by reading an article than this video.
From an engineering perspective mid engined cars have much more appeal to me. The lower moment of inertia also helps with compliance... everything just works better. But for this money I'd get this over any mid engine car just to not have a turbo 4 banger
Well, the new Cayman 718 GTS 4.0 and GT4 are superior and similarly priced once you option carbon ceramic brakes on this CS
I always look forward to your measured, nuanced, and insightful views on cars. This was no exception. Well done.
I own an LCI M2 and it's a great car. I can recommend the M2 to a gear-head no problem. Now they are coming off lease and some bargains are out there. Get one while you can!
Lost me at better than a Cayman. In what way? Every time you get in the low slung mid engined 2 seater, you know you’re in something special. While the M2 is undoubtedly a great car it still follows the basic “hot hatch” mentality. Sit in a bunch of other 2 series on the dealer lot, then hop in this one. Other than when you’re driving at the limits it’s just going to feel like you’re in a commuter car.
You can absolutely not drive a cayman and feel that way.
If you watch the whole review, he says the Cayman is better. He noted that *some say"the M2 Comp is better than a Cayman.
Here's a big reason: 6 cylinder vs 4 cylinder. He even mentioned this in the video.
curttheboywonder If you’re that quick to judgement, sure. Video didn’t even claim the M2 is better at every way than a Cayman, but sure, go off immediately. Even at the end, the review still say midengined stuff like the Alpine and Cayman are less inert in their response and it’s down to personal preference.
curttheboywonder I really respect MP, someone who has great depth of know;edge but I tend to agree with you. I was coming to the end of my time with an M2 and just couldn’t find something exciting and interesting to replace it with. I did consider the CS but felt it would be too similar, I’ve ended up with a Cayman GTS 4.0 on order because it will be special and is ~8k GBP cheaper.
J B yes its what trips your fancy, I’ve had 3 of the 1/2 series 3L cars and have avoided the 4cyl caymans, I’d driven a late 6cyl, 981 but didn’t like the silly interest rates on the PCP but I love the lightness and balance of the Cayman. For me the 4.0 engine was the tipping point. I think the CS would be a great choice though, have you not spotted Mat is driving a RHD CS/
Seeing someone plod around in a fast car is a welcome change. because if Clarkson and the like would have been driving this it would have run out of
rear tyres within a couple of minutes which became very tedious to watch. the only thing you could have added was the interior. because this car in
Australia costs about the same as a house!,
This is the CS version and needs to be reviewed on the track. That’s where you can really note it’s strengths and weaknesses. I think your main focus was on everyday drivability, which the original M2 is a better suited for. But honestly, if you are buying the CS version, you really aren’t buying it for everyday drivability- so this review doesn’t necessary help potential buyers.
watching autocar reviews - the best way to put yourself asleep
rear subframe was mounted equally in the m2 and m2 comp??
I agree. It was changed going from the m240i to the M2.
The BMW M2 CS I purchased has 405 HP per the MCO/MSO that I received when I bought the car. Doesn't look like it was worth $30,000+ more than my M2 Competition that I traded in. BMW has yet to explain to me why it states only 405 HP and not the advertised 444 HP. Has anyone else had this issue? What is going on? Should I be concerned?
It saddens me that I have to dislike a video of such an awesome car
Like a Top Gear review from the 1970s. I'd find the constant droning noise from this car a distraction. Hang on I think there's a cure 😂
Does this have auto box now?
Available as 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT

Great balanced and accurate (with the facts) review! Unfortunately this car is just a willy waving exercise by BMW and it's far out of reach for most of us!
M2:it's all about the sheer driving pleasure
M2cs or M4dtm ?
How does the M2 weigh 3600lbs!? That's 6.2L V8 Camaro weight!
I am still in two minds, M2 or Audi Q8. Keeping that aside, excellent review of the M2.

CS moniker, real or another marketing ploy ?
It's sheer ///Marketing here. Real collectables are like the M3 CSL or M4 GTS. This is just a Competition with carbon bits, engine retune and stickier tyres. Adaptive suspension make this heavier and more complex than analogue.
Gold wheels on a blue BMW. I don't need viagra now that I've got pictures of that M2 CS.
Why are you talking miles while you are in UK, where kilometers are measured?
Superb video 🙌🏼
Great review.
This guy needs to take a few lessons from Rory! He’s managed to make this car appear rather boring. I’m sure he’s a top bloke but we need a touch more enthusiasm 👍
Highly doubt it's the last installment of the M2...there's still a CSL to be had....
Still not a Porsche and at these prices why not buy the best??
You can’t talk about this car without talking about a Porsche.
I love my M550 as it’s a legitimate alternative to the Panamera and outperforms many Panamera models. This unfortunately is not an alternative to the best from Porsche. Lastly never buy the outgoing model.
You can’t compete with a mid engine sports car especially when it’s a Porsche. It’s another level of quality, drive and performance.
Comparing the M2 variants to a mid engine Porsche is like comparing a Corvette C7 to the C8. Its apples vs oranges.
I interpret all of this as being the Porsche Cayman is better in every way at essentially the same price point.
