BMW M2 vs M2 Competition: Which Should You Buy?

  • I get behind the wheel of a 2017 BMW M2 and a 2020 BMW M2 Competition, both currently for sale at Gravelwood Car Sales. You can potentially save around £15,000 or £250 a month by choosing the original M2 instead of the Competition, but is the later car actually worth the extra money?

      I have an OG M2 (lci 2018) i recently fitted custom upholstered M4 competition seats. Basically M2 CS seats i suppose...😎 i purchased the seats online. They come originally from a BMW M4 competition prototype car, fitted with carbon texture cloth (Testvehicle with only 7000km’s) Very happy with these. They perform better while spirited driving and they look amazing! I sit slightly lower too. instagram.com/p/CC0xaP2HbaO/?igshid=gptmkzpc44v2
      I bought mine new six months before M2 COMP was prestented. It was easy 5-7K more over the OG M2, and in my country road taxes times 4 over OG M2, so 10k plus more EASY....Not worth the money i think. 100K for an M2 CS, YOU MUST BE KIDDING. NOT WORTH IT! 😂

      the price difference is so wide because ones a '17 with no or very little factory warranty and the other is a '20 plate with best part of 3 yrs factory warranty.
      ignore the sh*t info in the video and do your own research.
      both cars were available in 2018, so a much easier comparison than a 2017 and a 2020.
      Black M2 '18 plate, dct, 12,700 miles - £37,495
      Orange M2 Comp, '68 plate, dct, 14,000 miles - £39,990
      both cars on autotrader right now.
      £2.5k difference is a lot better than £15k right ?
      and for that you get an extra 45 bhp, nicer wheels, much improved seats, better handling, bigger brakes (bigger still on this one as it has the factory upgrade over the standard already better comp brakes), 5 months extra factory warranty and the only downside is a little bit less noise.

    • @MrHCars
      @MrHCars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      th3b0untyhunter that’s a cracking reply! Want to add that the added power doesn’t really make much a difference since the Comp is heavier too. Only 20kg more than an M4.
      But the improvement in handling and power delivery makes the comp so much of a better car. So if you’re in the market for a 2018 M2... splash the extra 2.5k and get the comp. Otherwise get an older M2 as it’s just as good a car

    I bought a 2018 M2 as the M2 Competition was being introduced. My car was optioned with a package that added alcantara trip, the BMW alcantara performance parts wheel and some other items. I decided it was what I wanted, a simple car without so many of the things on the comp. And as you say, the performance if about the same. With this being at the end of the model run, I also got a nice discount. A very enjoyable car to drive when not using my 2019 330xi. I traded it earlier this year for a 991.2 Carrera.

    Just saw your Instagram story about low numbers. Chin up, those that haven’t watched are missing out. I watch your videos for a few reasons, not just because it’s about a cool car. So when a video is about “less” exciting cars like ‘just’ m2’s for which I’m not in the market, there are still reasons to watch. You make the best quality videos story-wise, there’s a point to your videos rather than just driving a car because you can. The visuals are also some of the best (bar Cars with Luke). Your personality is great entertainment too and a big factor. AND then you drive epic cars in cool locations. Big fan. Keep going. Oh and your thumbnails are always on point!

    Thanks Sam this is a really good video and comparison. I’ve got an m2 LCI and I feel that the tech (it has the dials and newer nav from the comp) versus fun factor is just spot on. I like the 1M but I feel that the step backwards in tech would be a bit much, plus the m2 was a partsbin special like the 1M so that’s why it feels more like it than the comp, which I imagine is closer to the M4 in feel. Great vid though. Thanks

    Having been on a road trip in my friends M2 competition for about 4000km in 6 days I can safely say that the seats are magnificent. Never got tired from the long drives, and the sound in the car wasn't tiring either. Unless you really floored it, the engine sound didn't overpower the music. The power is just unbelievable. Cruising at 200km/h feels like going 80 in a normal car, and yet, if you need to, there is still power to push it even further (which we did on several occasions). Such a great car.
    The only thing I don't like is the very visible exhaust muffler, looks a bit unfinished because of it. From the looks of it, it's not visible on the standard M2.

      I have owned a cheap ass M140i for the past 4 years, it's running 455bhp/634nm and kicks the arse of any any standard or stage 1 M2, for £23,000 total spend including the purchase price ! And I have the same seats as the M2 lol ...
      The M2C is a much better car in every way, and I prefer the exhaust too, but here's a newsflash for you, you can change the exhaust !!! Fit a miltek to the M2C and it sounds amazing, shhhh though I don't want everyone to know.

    I had an F10 M5 for a few years and in the UK and the weather we have here I genuinely had to battle the car constantly. A mix of RWD and 600bhp, I found, was just too much and no matter how much throttle I applied, that traction light would blink at me. It’s good to know the M2 comp is a little more planted. It makes an already enjoyable drivers car that bit better in the varied weather we have here which I find is an absolute necessity in modern cars.

    • @peterhammer6915
      @peterhammer6915 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me the F10 M5 is the worst M-car in history. Too much power in comparison with zero road feel and much to soft suspension. Felt nothing when driving it. M2 Competition is in a different stratosphere even if its slower on a straight line.

    The 1M isn't really 'a few more quid a month' as most buyers of either M2 will be financed via PCP which will not be available on a 61 plate 1M making it a LOT more per month on HP.

    Good video Sam. Well the thing is... Also you want to think how much time are you planning on keeping this car. The 1M for example is a modern classic and also entering an interesting "mile sensitive" territory. And because of manufacturing year, the m2's will depressiate very different too. That's if we are speaking money wise. But then... as a true petrolhead, the desider will be the 3 way test drive

    Great video 👍. A few points, I own a 2016 M2 and have retrofitted the LCI/M2C dials, they are easier to see in cloudy weather and are still analogue they are not actually digital, I too love analogue. I have also had the carbon and aluminium strut brace from the M4/M3/M2C retrofitted. This alone made a significant handling difference more to the chassis and suspension than the steering. The part numbers of the suspension between the M2 and M2C is confirmed as the same. All changes noted are due to the brace and yeh the car is so much more compliant and precise with it. The N55 with a sports cat such as I have sounds exotic and thuggish at the same time it's really brilliant. The M2C is more vacuum cleaner like in delivery. it is a really fun car it makes you work for the drive and grin like an idiot. I'd have the seats in the M2C though!

      Peter Wood, there are plenty of sets on eBay, at least 6 month’s ago when i was looking. I even came across a complete M2 COMP interior, red stitching...Just google BMW F82 interior for sale. Select images and scroll away...some pictures will direct you to eBay, Some from crashed car salvagers, others like mine, prototype car interiors can mainly be found with used carparts dealers on eBay. More often than not though they are complete interiors and for the better part lefthanded drive items. COMP spec seats are rare though. As are righthanded drive items. I bought mine from an independent BMW specialist in Holland. He even retrofitted the seatheating, since mine were cloth wrapped seats. He also preinstalled the airbags. I swapped/sent him my OG airbags. All F serie airbags are exchangeable, same partnumber. There are some good threads on Bimmerpost on this topic. Here’s a link from what i posted on Bimmerpost. www.bimmerpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25570472 This was a supprisingly easy job. Just read the threads on the forums. No coding required. Only need basic skills, take your time. Always disconnect the battery when working on airbag equipped items. Use your OG electric seatmodules if you want the electric functions to work. It’s plug and play basically. Manual seats are a great deal cheaper... if you want the illuminated seatlogo’s to lighten up then you’ll need to install some extra wiring and I believe also coding. I didn’t do so, It doesn’t bother me. You can swap all safety equipment, airbags, seatbelt tensioners from OG items to the donor seats.

    one of the interesting points i saw someone make, who drove all 3 version of this car
    is that as you go from M2 > M2C > M2CS , the more and more COMFORTABLE the drive gets in the car, the more it gets to be suitable as a daily driver,
    which is the opposite of what BMW was trying to achieve.... lol....
