No to be for real though.. Team angel was definitely better. It actually had bright colors.. Sparkling outfits..... A dazzling transformation.. Everything an actual adaptation of the source material should have.. But instead they deviated from that and made it so bland... Sure fate had.. Okay parts... But it still missed the mark..
It is interesting because Team Angel honestly feels more like a Live Action American Wedding Peach spin off than a Sailor Moon one. There are 4 Angels in Team Angels like there are with the Love Angels on Wedding Peach etc.
Yeah this does seem more like a Wedding Peach spin off. An angel world Queen Angela seems very similar to Queen Aphrodite on Wedding Peach and Malvina seems similar to Reine Devila Queen of the Devils.
And honestly Queen Angela's son sounds like Limone from Wedding Peach.
Well, both Wedding Peach and Team Angel were modelled after Sailor Moon, so...
I'm shocked people even know about the show as I watched it back in the day and to me it was better than Sailor Moon as the characters were more fleshed out and there's actual stakes in it once things got serious. This show would've been a more suitable adaption of Wedding Peach than Sailor Moon as there's no heaven or anything of the sort in the latter. Someone clearly didn't do their homework.
@@Ziko577 Team Angels was meant to be a bootleg version of Sailor Moon, not an official adaptation. They HAD to make it different to avoid a lawsuit, that's the whole point of its existence, it was never meant to be faithful to its source material, lol.

Yeah, it is difficult to se how exactly this show should be a spin off of Sailor Moon.
I think the crucial thing people missed when trying to port over these shows is that the original success - Power Rangers - KEPT all its Japanese footage. In fact that was the thing we thought was coolest about the show - all the super sentai stuff, the aesthetic that we didn't see anywhere else on TV at the time. It wasn't the storyline, it wasn't the fact that there was fantasy and monsters, it was the style of the work itself. That's why we were so intrigued by it even when it was clear there was barely a budget behind it. Once they realized they could just license the actual anime rather than going through the motions of making a brand new show that's when they were cued in. And low and behold, it was in the end anime stylings which found their way into American production.
Masked Rider could have really been something for the same reason but Saban and co really dropped the ball with how crappy the backdoor pilot came off.
@@TheoRae8289man, I wish the Masked Rider show would've been as entertaining as Power Rangers. I remember as a kid thinking that Masked Rider armor looked so cool. However, even if Masked Rider managed to be popular back then, the show was based on Kamen Rider Black RX which was the last Kamen Rider show made in Japan and since it ended the fanchise entered into a hiatus and wouldn't been revived until the year 2000s with Kamen Rider Kuuga. There were a couple of Kamen Rider movies made in the 90s, but I don't think it had enough material to work with. Saban at least managed to make 3 seasons of Beetleborgs with different Metal Hero series footage

I can actually imagine all of the potential merchandise that could have been made for this from dress up costumes, wands, tiaras, dolls, plushies, action figures with playsets, games and books.
Yes! This series reminds me a lot of shows line Xina Warrior Princess and Hercules. I definitely would have bought merchandise if this was a fully realized series 😂

So those newspaper shots are actual newspapers from early 1998 with the image photoshopped on top. At 18:43, the logo in the top-right corner is for Super Bowl XXXII, which was played in January 1998. The middle part is kind of blurry, but you can still see it's the official 4-pointed logo from that game, and the words "Super" and "Bowl" are still visible. And even though it's super-grainy, I think the first two words of the description are "Broncos" and "Packers" (the two teams who played in the game), and the last two words seem to be "NFL Championship". And then at 19:01, the picture along the top is Brett Favre, the quarterback for the Packers at the time.
I think that was the year the super bowl was on my birthday.
I was hoping for a Team Angel deep dive. 🤩 If history had been a little different, this would have been a big piece of 90's pop culture.

Well, there was an _actual_ live-action Sailor Moon in Japan in 2003...
Toei keeps remaking Sailor moon every few years to keep the TV and film copyrights.

Honestly I feel like this show, with the right creative team and budget, could have potential as a genuinely fun children's show.
I think it's sweet how the story was interpreted, I can see what traits they understood and tried to mimic, it's kind of endearing because the overall essence it's still warm and kind, and they could have made a more shallow interpretation, so I give them props for seeing some of the heart of the show.
I really want to watch Team Angel now lol thank you for finding everything you find you are incredible

Five years after I originally discovered this in Cecilia's original article and it STILL blows my mind! Like others have said, this iteration definitely feels separate enough that it could have stood on its own... though of course, then Buffy the Vampire Slayer got a spin-off and "Team Angel" got unofficially trademarked there, so... actually, I could definitely see Charisma Carpenter fitting into this group, so maybe that's not so wild XD

I'm so glad that I was born in Brazil, where we got the anime with no cuts, just the only thing from the USA dub we got were the localized names for some characters.
And we didn't have any Sailor Moon attempts around here.
Although we do have a “Power Ranger attempt” from the early 2000s, it's called Bambuluah, it's all levels of bad and I love it because it's those attempts that have some love in it.
Team Angel, would have been better if they removed the ANGEL part, because it ends up sounding like a religious show, and I do know it's also because during the 90s for some reason, we as a collective, kind of became obsessed with Angels, but still, it would have worked better if they used something else.
Oh well, I hope this one was the last attempt.
I love that USA producers think they can make something better and fails because they don't get it.
And for those wondering, yes the official Sailor Moon live-action is good, it's well written, it allowed Naoko Takeuchi to give ideas to the series and what she wanted to be changed, so PGSM is still a good live-action version, it makes changes, but they are good, and it does help that all the Senshi were played by actual teenagers, and they do act like teens, sure from the early 2000s, but they do act like teens.
It's too bad the toku version didn't get more seasons or something as it'd would've been cool for them to do all of the manga vs. the dark kingdom arc again but I guess the budget wouldn't have allowed that. Most of those shows tend to be one and done and that's it with no room for a sequel unless it did very well.

I would love if they did a 20-years special, like 20 years later.
All the actresses look great, and they are still friends and who knows they might accept returning one more time.

@@Ziko577Tbh, I think it was enough ;). It had around 50 episodes allowing it to run for the entire year, like the most popular toku titles. It's a long-time commitment for the actors in a country where a typical "high stakes" TV show tends to run for 3 months and be over. I think it's actually great that sequels are a thing of rarity in Japanese TV, and therefore, the producers have to give their show a proper ending - even if they can't quite close all the plotlines or they make some poor choices in the process (e.g. when adapting a manga that's still running), they do their best to deliver closure for the viewers. PGSM did that too, and did it quite well - especially if you count the extra episode they filmed for Mamoru and Usagi's wedding plans (it was tacky as hell but I loved it XD).
@@yuaelt plus it was a full circle moment, since Naoko-sensei was always open that one of her inspos were Toku series.
and PGSM was a toku series, and still a rare one where the main group is only composed with women.
20+ years later and we don't have many toku series that follow PGSM mold.
I never truly cared that we never got to see Chibi-usa, or the other senshi, because PGSM does have a ending.
And we got to see original creations, like Princess Sailor Moon (that is not Usagi, is Serenity), Sailor Luna, and of course, Dark Sailor Mercury, characters that were co-created by Naoko and even co-designed by her.
I love that the fandom after a long time is starting to see that PGSM is good and just a different flavor of Sailor Moon.
It's wild they made so many. Just goes to show you can't beat the OG

Team Angel helping out the kids with problems reminded me of the short-lived cartoon Nilus the Sandman
So Lyla = Ami, Rosalyn = Rei, Persephone = Luna, Enoch = Artemis, Prince Theo is a nerfed Mamoru and Delphine has bits of Usagi and Minako, while Celeste has bits of Usagi and Makoto. Also, the star satchels sound oddly like the anti-akuma charms in Miraculous.
This was great! I love these Sailor Moon vault videos. Now if only there were something of a script or some kind of production materials for that one live action Sailor Moon movie they were considering in the 90's in the Library of Congress, the Geena Davis was supposedly attached to. Too bad they probably didn't even get that far into the project. Anyway, great work! Always love seeing you in my subscription tab! Now to see if anyone will be inspired to make more Team Angel fan art but I have a feeling that person is going to have to be me 😅
I think they might have switched around the roles in the promo. The brunette girl with the pigtails looks like she was kind of the leader.
You know hearing about Queen Angela being known for her beauty, wisdom, and virtue and angelic powers kinda reminds me of the Queen Angelique from the Angelique video game and anime series because the Queen there is described in the same way and she is literally the Queen of the Cosmos. I'm sorry, my brain has to make all of these weird connections between completely random things. I remember seeing a video of the Team Angels pilot on youtube almost ten years ago and I was left thinking that if this had been among all of those girl empowering cartoons and tv shows that were prevalent in the 90s and 80s (some others being Jem and the Holograms, She-Ra. and Princess Gwenmivere/Starla and the Jewel Riders), I would probably have enjoyed it. Even if it only had a very short season of 5 episodes or something. I mean just from the promo/video and this video alone, there's a lot of creativity and lore to pull from for the could have fans to have written their own fanfics and maybe their own little fan made videos.

This show feels like the live action commercial of the toy. I kind of wish this show happened. We had super human samurai cyber squad so why not.
I always feel, that despite being blatant cash grabs, the people who made these pitches also put a lot of thought and heart into them - or as much as the budget allowed at least lol.
Oh yes, i have learned through my investigations that regardless of the quality, it seems the teams behind it are usually all dedicated to creating something new and exciting. That gave me an entirely newfound appreciation for the crews behind all these projects
Honestly I'm not heartbroken this show never got made. As mean as it might sound to say it sounds absolutely INSIPID, good LORD. Just listening to that description gave me two new cavities.
I think there were probably a lot of concerns around the story too. There's just so much to try to work around and untangle there if you wanted to try to make anything good and the worldbuilding would be an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE to make coherent with what they had going so far as a foundation. I'm not saying it couldn't have worked at all but it would have taken a LOT of work to make something more than puddle-deep out of it if they had any intentions of doing so. Not to say there's nothing good there, I like the concept that the Angels kinda kept in touch with or kept an eye on the people they saved in the past rather than ditching them forever like most Sailor Moon characters of the day, and it sounds like the team could have had a pretty fun dynamic between them.
God that sentence "would rather read a book than eat" made me just criiinge though... like I'm sure that's not how they meant it but... ooooof...

This is sounding an awful lot like Rainbow Brite. Purely coincidental, I hope, due to the magical girl genre.
I would have watched it as a kid if it got brought to my country, tbh. I would even watch it now, if only for the nineties charm and the love pentagon they would all get in on with the prince. I am also curious about Queen Angela and Malvina. I know it would likely stay a straightforward "good queen, evil witch" situation, but think of the potential drama if they cut a bit deeper. Imagine if the previous King and Queen purposefully raised one sister under incredible pressure to always show the image of a perfect heiress, while the "spare" sister was ignored and grew resentful of her big sister's assumed perfection? Maybe, at some point, Malving became entangled in court intrigue and needed Angela's support and advice, but Angela was under too much pressure from their parents and chose the court above her sister, leading to Malvina rebelling, getting exiled to the dark side of the Moon and learning dark magic to survive, forever resentful of her family and their betrayal, while Angela has to live with the constant guilt of not being there for her sister and being a catalyst for her downfall? As you might have guessed, I quite enjoy court drama.

There is totally a timeline where Team Angel AND Sailor Moon were a thing in the 90s. Yes, there are certainly things about TA took inspiration from SM. But it’s different enough that it wouldn’t be a huge deal.

From all the other vault episodes, I have cringed how they took the concept of the original and…well, I’m sure we all have words to describe them.
But this, I actually like this, I have been watching with a smile on my face the whole time, it is something I would have loved to grow up with. I already feel Lyla would be my fave, and if not her, Celeste.

This seems more like it's inspired by Sailor Moon, rather than a direct adaption. The characters are barely similar, and that seems to be the only real connection. The show could be sold on the merits of its individuality. And honestly, not being tied to an Americanized version of an IP gives this series more potential than the Toon Makers series ever could have. Personally, it's not my thing. My sister would have liked it. I think a lot of 6-12 year old girls could have latched onto this and it could have been mildly successful had it been picked up.

Okay I can let a lot of things go for the time it was produced and that it was just a pitch, but that part in the transformation sequence where the girl is sitting at the green screen looks awkward. I guess they were going for making it look like she's sliding down a tunnel, but they probably should've gone with a standing position with her feet just off camera so they could angle the camera making it look like she's flying with her arms out.

It's so interesting that this is probably where we almost got Usagi's westernized name being Celeste from. I mean, it COULD be a coincidence since it was originally on Kodansha's website, but I really think there was some sort of overlap here. Especially since, other than being shy, her personality is closest to Usagi's.
