      Please don't listen to them. You don't owe them anything. I can tell you put so much work into this and that's all that matters. Keep improving where you feel you should, but we're all moonies regardless of whatever language we found the show through or how we pronounce things, we're still all connected. And you cant learn if you don't begin or try somewhere, right? You're already ahead of the game. Quite literally the heart of Sailor Moon is love. Love isnt bound by voice, nationality, race, birthplace, or yes, the way we pronounce things. As long as you lead in love, you're a-ok. Usagi/Serena wouldn't have it any other way.

      Not to be that guy, but The Powerpuff Girls debuted as a part of Cartoon Network's "World Premiere Toons" show in February of 1995 before Sailor Moon began its initial run in US syndication later that same year.
      The PPG was a hit out of the gate & was the most anticipated new series of all the cartoons that debuted on that program. The series itself wouldn't launch until 1998, but that part of your statement isn't accurate. The PPG's creation or success isn't due to Sailor Moon

    I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else say this in the comments, but your theory on Blue’s name holds up. In Australia, redheads are often nicknamed Blue or Bluey. It’s not as common anymore but it used to be a massive cultural thing - it even has a Wikipedia article you can look up! It’s a bit of a joke, obviously playing on the fact that they are the opposite of blue. So theoretically, if someone on the team was familiar with this, it’s not far fetched that they decided to name their red haired character Blue!

    God, I just loved that interview with Lynn. It reminds me of when I went to a Q&A panel for Mai Aizawa, a Japanese voice actress and singer who had been in a ton of popular animes - Lucky Star, Mirai Nikki, Clannad, Negima, Nichijou, etc - and many fans were excitedly asking her about her popular work. When I came up to the mic, I asked a question that left the translator stumbling as she shifted through her notes. I started off my question by stating that my favorite roll of hers was as Yumemi from Munto (the first original series that Kyoto Animation ever made that is so obscure that KyoAni doesn't even list it on their website). The translator stopped me, shuffling through her notes, but Mai simply rested a hand on her shoulder and said "I know Munto" in Japanese. Despite not hearing the translation of my question yet, she seemed transfixed as I finished stating that I was more or less there to tell her it was my favorite role of hers and that I just wanted to know what it was like recording for the project. After she received the translation, she paused for a moment, looking stunned. Finally, she leaned forward and thanked me for my compliment, and admitted that her role as Yumemi was one that she was extremely nervous for because it was the first time she was ever casted as a main character. She went on to praise her co-star, Daisuke Ono (an insanely famous voice actor with multiple awards), because he was able to help calm her nerves and help her give her absolute best in this milestone roll of hers. Even before hearing the translation, I could absolutely see the love and passion in her eyes and carried in her voice from this charished part of her career that most of her fans don't even know about, so she rarely got to relive those memories and speak of her time back then. I had no idea that it was her first role, or even that she would react so strongly. It wasn't the first time I had approached a celebrity with an obscure piece of media and left them stunned, but her pure and genuine reaction left me loving Munto even more and now everytime I hear her role as Yumemi whenever I rewatch it, I can't help but picture the nervous newbie Mai Aizawa in the recording studio being cheered on and supported by the legendary Daisuke Ono. That thought always brings a smile to my face.

    Slight correction on Sailor Stars, it's actually a common misconception that it wasn't dubbed into English because of censorship of certain themes. In reality there was a lot of complicated behind-the-scenes stuff(which we still don't know the full details of and I suspect we never will as I have no doubt Naoko has no desire to risk pissing off the hand that feeds her) going on at Toei which caused them to refuse to license out Sailor Moon anywhere outside of Japan, not just the U.S., and that happened in 2003 and as a result it was a full decade before we saw anything new SM related outside of Japan. So the Sailor Starlights really had nothing to do with it(and I heard rumors that Naoko herself wasn't happy with how the Starlights were drastically changed from the Manga and that she herself did not want an English dub of Stars at the time for that reason).
    Toei didn't exactly treat Sailor Moon the best after airing it, as they let the original prints deteriorate into lousy condition(which explains why the 2004 sub-only DVDs are of such poor quality) so them arbitrarily keeping the show locked away for a decade is just par for the course for them.

    • @heavennunya809
      @heavennunya809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Not to mention, the anime made sailor stars weird. Idk why, but instead of making the sailor stars crossdressers, they deemed it more appropriate to make them shapeshifters. Course, the anime changed a lot of things from the manga, some of it was good, like I do prefer why Serena and Endymion died in the anime than how they did in the manga, but what the anime did with the sailor stars was just bizarre.
      Even the new crystal anime made some weird changes, like with what happened with Haruka. Haruka's whole schtick is that she has the strengths of both sexes, and that she didn't care what her sex was because she didn't deem it important. But for some reason the new anime made her be both male and female, what to my understanding is due to a mistranslation, even though it's well established ONLY females can be Sailor Soldiers. I do love the anime, but it has caused a LOT of unnecessary drama in the community by doing odd stuff like this instead of sticking to the original storyline.

      No thats not true, many countries got the liscence to dub the stars season in its first run. Including germany where im from. One of the reasons naoko refused to give out the liscence for Sailor Moon later on, was caused by the drastic changes they did to her characters in many countries. America beeing the worst by changing names, stories, japanese letters, asian food into american food. They tried everything to americanize the original anime. To this day naoko has to approve EVERYTHING. Its not toei and it never was. They also had a fallout and naoko blocked the liscencing. In germany we still get delays in dvds and manga reprints from time ro time cause of naoko. If somethings not okay with her, it has to be changed. And thats totally fine, its her baby at the end.

    That Lynn interview was really sweet! There's something about hearing women recall their past jobs in their careers in the pre internet era that makes me feel cozy and heartened. The comment where she expressed her thoughts that the Sailor Moon live action/cartoon hybrid concept could still work and that girls needed more female super heroes reminded me of the time I got to hear Trina Robbins (a female cartoonist who also published books on the history of women cartoonists and made art for a video game in the early 90s) speak at a comic con and speak with her at her table. For lack of better words, it feels like a very 90s woman sentiment, and I think it's very sweet.

      I think that it’d be interesting to see something like PGSM done with that hybrid- doing the fight scenes like that would allow for an easy international release, as you could have the live action segments done locally while using the animated parts- kind of like Power Rangers, but hopefully more faithfully.
      PGSM did some cool stuff with having the hair change entirely with the transformation, which would probably be good for the whole adaptations thing- PGSM had a bunch of twists and turns on the manga and 90s anime, and this format could allow that to occur on an international level, with each version having slightly different takes on the story, as a gimmick- this could hypothetically allow for a higher profit, as people might want to watch every version to see the different stories, and because they’re different you could sell each version as something separate.

    This documentary was amazing. Excellent work. Man, I was there for the “Save our Sailors” era. It was SUCH a big deal when Sailor Moon came back. Another reason Sailor Moon struggled is not only when it aired, but how it aired. I recall the show airing completely out of order making it I’m sure very confusing for the young audience it was aiming for. When it was brought back on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block, it was one of the few times anyone played the show in proper order which I think was a big help in bringing more people in.

    I always find weird yet fascinating how the USA tries to transform Japanese media, and the whole Saban Moon thing is wild. Sailor Moon was super successful in Latin America, we got all seasons, less censorship (at least compare to whatever the USA Dubs did) all lead by a pretty faithful to the original Dub, and we got a lot more anime than English Speaking Countries. I saw the premiere of Sailor Moon by accident (greatest accident) because I was watching Saint Seiya and didn't change the channel when it was done, it was great. Guess anime in LAM was just received differently.

      The thing about Sailor Moon's Mexican dub is that, although it was translated directly from the Japanese version, the characters' names were the same as the U.S. version (Serena instead of Usagi), but starting from episode 66 there were some changes, all new characters kept their Japanese names, and there some actors were replaced (Tuxedo Mask went from Genaro Vásquez to Gerardo Reyero, for example). Still, the dub was excelent, as other dubs from the same studio, Intertrack (they also dubbed Dragon Ball, Digimon and Sakura Cardcaptor there)
      Sailor Moon's Neutral Spanish dub is so great that almost all of the original cast reprised their roles for Crystal, the only major voice changes were for Sailor Jupiter (since her original voice actress passed away in '99), Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Saturn

      Same for France, animes were very popular. Of course a lot of it got localised and a bit censored to fit children audience but the plot was still faithful overall. The ones which got the most censored where animes not created for kids, like City Hunter and its famous vegetarian restaurants replacing love hotels. Here Sailor Moon debuted on 1993 on national TV (club Dorothée) fully dubbed and was a huge success.

Fist of the North Star was dubbed into Neutral Spanish, but it was a dub of the U.S. version and it was only broadcasted there, though recently we got a dub of one of the 2000s OVAs. i always really liked the localization of "serena" v "usagi". "usagi" was supposed to be evocative of the rabbit in the moon legend, and audiences in japan would get the reference. "serena" was supposed to be evocative of serene=tranquil=tranquility base=the moon landing, and audiences in america would get the reference. it hit exactly the way it was supposed to, unlike the gobshite cardcaptor sakura dub that picked random-ass white names and called it a day

    I just needed to pause at 17 minutes in to comment because I am already very emotional from that introduction. Discovering Sailor Moon when I was a small kid, in Ireland in the late 90's + early 2000's had a profound positive impact on me. I found it not long before puberty started and I was aware of my bisexuality at this stage. They only aired season 1 + 2 on the British station I watched it on so I eventually managed to get my parents to buy the VHS tapes up to Season 3 including movies. Even though the English dub made Haruka and Michiru "cousins" I understood immediately what I was actually looking at and it meant so much to me.
    I'll continue watching now. Thank you for making this docu.

  • @sailoreligaming

    Sailor Moon SOS was how I got in touch with Tracey Hoyt (original voice actress for Chibiusa/Rini) and ended up conducting a little interview with her when I was 12 for my Sailor Moon message board RPG. It blue my tiny preteen mind that someone who had done all this work on a show that I loved so dearly would actually respond. I ended up finding her on Twitter several months back and mentioned it to her, and she *remembered* me! Sailor Moon was a big inspiration to me in so many ways (if my user name and profile pic are any indication), and this was just one part that solidified my place in the fandom.
    tl;dr: SOS was an incredible website and Tracey Hoyt is an absolute sweetheart.

    Given how the original translation projects around the world handled LGBT and GNC concepts, I shudder with both fear and curiosity wondering how these American Moon projects would have butchered things like Haruka and Michiru's and Kunzite and Zoisite's relationships, the Starlights' genderswap gimmick, or the large percentage of male characters that dress and act in atypically masc fashion. If the dubs were a mess to begin with, the adaptations could have been an unholy nightmare.

It was also the reason why they didn't aired one of the sailormoon movies (the one where Luna is turned into a human girl) because they though it would confuse the audience

    It's entirely possible that the English logo and character names were provided by Toei themselves. The same thing happened with Magic Knight Rayearth, as TMS provided an English logo for use with the Sega Saturn game and the anime, and had a set of Americanized character names that they had tried to force onto them (which goes into a deeper rabbit hole involving a cancelled Rayearth dub for Fox Kids, but I digress).

    • @astrobollo
      @astrobollo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's right. The logo was the official international one that was present in any other localization, not only the american dub. As for the names, probably were official localizations too by Toei. Those names are also in the Latin American dub made in Mexico, and that was dubbed directly from the japanese version (not the Dic version).

It was my window into Japanese culture and the very fact that third grade me had the dream of some day watching it in the original Japanese without subtitles was the catalyst to how I am in Japan now and have made it my home. The amount of time and dedication you spent on trying to find and reminisce of the mysterious Saban Moon, is really impressive! This was very informative.
    I always have been curious about Saban moon after finding a picture of Saban Moon’s Sailor Moon and Darian online back in 2012 when I was a kid just discovering the world of Sailor Moon and anime in general.
    Sailor Moon holds a special place in my heart, while not my first exposure to Anime (that would be Dragob Ball Z and YuGiOh) it was my first exposure to the Magical Girl genre. It led me to find shows like Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew, Full Moon Wo Sagashite, and so many more.
    Being 20 years old now, I can honestly say discovering Sailor Moon and anime in general has made a huge impact on me, I have so much more appreciation for the animation industry and the dedicated fans.

    I personally didn't know much about sailor moon my self, but I genuinely enjoyed learning about sailor moon and your process of how everything came together for you.
    From the chapters in your production, to the unfolding of events, to the detail you included . *chef kiss* A MASTERPIECE .
    Looking forward to the rest of it. Amazing job! Bobdunga
