- ★Before Sailor Moon was brought to the western world, Toon Makers almost made their own version! At long last, thanks to TH-camr Ray Mona, the long lost pilot has been found! This is my reaction to it.

When I first saw it I was like this is so 80's not 90's lol.
It's definitely got a very 80's vibe

Even by '90s standards, this feels dated. If I didn't know better, I'd think this came straight out of the 80s. I am so thankful that Saban rejected this pilot, because if we hadn't, the actual Japanese version would never have crossed the pond. Everyone would have considered this kitschy, disjointed wreck the "definitive" Sailor Moon simply because it was American-made.
Toon Makers rejected it. Saban didn't do anything with this project, it was just Toon and Renessaince Atlantic, the latter who was working with Saban of popularized English Super Sentai
But what would have happened if we did get this version instead of the Japanese version?

@@justinsigler1565 *sigh* SheRa was a girl show before this pilot came into production and the pilot has waaay similar artstyle to She-Ra's. Xena The Warrior Princess is a 90s show with a female warrior Xena- idea similar to Sailor Moon except it's for different audience and with different setting, and with swords instead of wands. Combine both of them plus the campy dances and talking about boys- this is basically how would Toon Moon could be without SM.

I will give the pilot one thing, i kind of like the opening theme for being a bit catchy, but some of these characters designs i wasn't expecting to look like that. Like Luna being a white cat, Sailor Jupiter, Mercury & Venus with the extremely different hair colour & hair style among more.

With some more time and work this might have actually gone somewhere if they had just dropped the Sailor Moon idea entirely and made some original characters to be an all girl team using this theme and setting.
There is just no way Naoko would have allowed this show using her characters name looking like this to stay on the air if this did manage to get past the starting line. this might have even upset her so much she might have said Sailor Moon is never coming over here no matter how much money they try to give her.
Toon Moon's animated part could be better if the artstyle didn't resemble She-Ra that much
Maybe they hired a bunch of Ex-Filmation guys to work on this Americanized Sailor Moon.

@@conradojavier7547 Nah doesn't fit while She-ra's animation was cheap (and this is from someone that loved She-ra as a kid) the plots were almost always better than this.

I think the two monsters look so much alike those in the Japanese version.
But yeah the theme song really suits her personally
I like the multiracial cast (even though this and whitewashing are two problems nowadays), this badass transformation choir music and the liveaction/2D hybrid, and opening theme BUT the rest is meh- also, they came back to save the planet yet they talk about A MISSED PARTY and "losing pounds" what?! And Jupiter's reference to "bulky boys" oh my god (even though the black Jupiter's actress herself is awesome) plus the scene of makeover was sterotypical tbh.
If you watch Ray Mona's documentary the animation wasn't that polished since this was a pitch for studios to budget the supposed western version of sailor moon. Tho I think this was the inspiration for japan to make a live action of Sailor Moon.
I did watch Ray Mona's documentary right after watching this and it gives me a lot more of an appreciation for this project!

I don't know, it just seems really annoying how disrespectful people are despite the fact of how much work went into even uncovering this. Have some respect people. Anime elitists are some of the worst fans.
I have to say, after watching and reacting to this, I went and watched the documentary by Ray Mona about this and I have a lot more respect for the work that went into this as well as uncovering it. This is an amazing piece of Sailor Moon history and I'm so happy it was found. Some people in Facebook groups I'm in are really really hateful on it. I personally love all forms of Sailor Moon. Am I glad that we got the (mostly) original source material instead of this? Yes. But I do appreciate the diversity they put into this version and I definitely think I would have still loved this version as a kid! (Plus, let's face it, the theme song is pretty catchy!)

This is *very* interesting! You can find similar examples of shows that had an alternative start. There was Star Trek's first pilot "The Cage" in 1964 (which failed to sell the show to the TV network and wasn't broadcast until 1988) featuring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike rather than William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk. In Britain, the beloved comedy series Blackadder had a similarly unaired pilot episode in 1982, featuring a number of elements that went on to appear in the series that was produced, but with a twist in the title character's nature: he was a cunning, ruthless and waspish person (as he went on to be from the show's second season onwards) though for the first season he was made into a pathetic whining fool. We've glimpsed the original Miraculous PV, showing the remarkably different original conception of that show. And it may also be worth mentioning Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the series based on a 1992 motion picture that is substantially different and is said not to be part of the later series' canon. However, it's all the more fascinating to see a variant of a show, made to try and sell that show's concept into another country (the US, in this case) that was ultimately rejected in favour of a simple English dub of the original series. It's an interesting touch to have live action for some scenes and animation for others - for me, that made the basic plot and characters more understandable.
Would it have taken off? I feel that it could have done, but also that it wouldn't have aged very well; from what little I've seen of the more familiar Sailor Moon, it seems to be holding up better under the weight of years than this one does. As a side note to that, the montage in the locker room has echoes of a similar scene in the movie Teen Witch; there were so many 80s productions that couldn't resist bursting into a song and dance routine at some point!

This was a real eye-opener, Luna - definitely one of your best reactions and commentaries; a little 'paws for thought' about what might have been, but ultimately didn't come to be.

Oh I definitely did. It's kind of more along the lines of. I was laughing so hard because it's so bad that it's good kind of thing lol But it's definitely a monstrosity of a creation and I'm so glad that we got what we did and not this garbage lol
@@Luna-TK I personally thought it was good. You have to blame the people who even commissioned them to begin with. They didn't give them enough money so they couldn't do something better. If they had the money, it would have been pretty dang good.

Lol i think it's Sailor Jupiter they made black? I don't know. I guess they were trying to add some diversity? This is what could have been... Before they brought the DIC Dub of the original anime, They animated this monstrosity and pitched this to Saban. They obviously never got the green light on it. Thank goodness and we eventually got the real Sailor Moon here in the United States
