watched this entire show and read the whole manga when i was 11 😭😭😭 the fashion was always so iconic, the girls definitely had some crazy outfits but they also had adorable ones and each character had a wardrobe of sorts, in that they'd rotate between a few outfits unique to them through the entire show
YES YES YES I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU POSTED THIS 😭💖💖 FOR MONTHS I'VE BEEN HOPING FOR A GOOD ANALYSIS ON THIS TOPIC! Thank you, you never fail to make me happy!
I adore that each of the girls have their own sense of style, so they dont always have to wear one color in their civilian outfits. Usagi/Serena wears very feminine, cute outfits with childish prints like bunnies, bows, and hearts, Ami/Amy prefers pastel colors and cardigans, Rei is very sleek and sophisticated, etc. Makoto/Lita is an interesting example.I love the way they handle her style because she’s a gentle, feminine girl who is still “the muscle” of the group. Her clothes are girly, wearing turtlenecks, pants, pencil skirts, etc. but they accentuate her fuller figure and keep her looking large and powerful.
As a dude who loves Sailor Moon since 7th grade I'm glad you made this video. I got into anime because of this show regardless its target demographic, I just love the overall aesthetics of the show and its message about love, friendship and femininity as well as its fashion.
Just a little add-on about Hakama, Hakama aren't women's only student/ceremony uniforms. Hakama are worn by both men and women, and Hakama is a type of clothing reserved for ceremonial occasions or as a uniform to certain fields, such as shrinemaidens in temples and as sportswear for martial arts. Women's hakama are so colorful, if i could get a chance, I'd wear it even once!!
This is WILD to me… when I was in high school, circa 2001, I used to draw my own versions of the sailor scouts in Versace runway looks, I would have Mercury always be the show opener and Neptune in the swimwear, for example. The antagonist would always be in John Galliano’s Dior Haute Couture looks. I always loved the outfits of the original manga and anime but I never made the connection, nor would have ever imagined, the connection to real fashion houses! This video may have changed or altered my life now in some way…
Okay, I had zero idea the costuming was so well-thought out until now!!! I always loved the fashion of Sailor Moon, but didn't know the references. This is super cool, Naoko Takeuchi is a genius.
whenever i learn anything about Sailor Moon I realize more and more how much of an impact it had on me as a child and how much I love it. Loved this video, thank you so much.
One thing that popped in my mind that was missed is there's a bonus chapter (I believe in SuperS but might be Stars) with Sailor Gucci and Sailor Chanel! Or rather, Chibi Usa's friends buy outfits that turn them into Sailor Guccicci and Sailor Channel. Sailor Moon had so many fun bonus chapters and that one is really cute, definitely worth the quick read.
Honestly would love this to be a series! I think another comment mentioned Nana but one good option is Jojo's Bizzarre Adventure which has entire characters named after fashion houses and has collaborated with Gucci
yes i love this!! sailor moon is basically a combination of everything naoko takeuchi likes and her life (she’s said her personality is most like usagi and named the parents and brother after her family irl) the series referenced fashion so much but is now being used as inspiration for collabs. takeuchi is a fan of anna sui and they’ve had several collabs
As a Japanese I first wondered how "gakuran" is literally 学 GAKU (acronym of 学生 gakusei = student... makes sense) and ラン RAN (western... why???), and found out that RAN is from RANDA meaning informally "clothes" in Edo era, which then comes from ORANDA, or Holland, meaning "western" because "western" equals Holland in that era. Or, 蘭服 RAN-PUKU meant western clothes so we can also consider the term as an acronym of 学生(GAKU sei) 蘭服(RAN-puku)。These are what I just learned ^^
I've always been kind of curious about the inspiration for Prince Endymion's armor. Knowing that Naoko designed it (since she draws inspiration wholesale from fashion), I'm 100% sure she drew it based on designs she saw.
I always want to recreate princess serenity dress! I even ask my seamstress she can do it or not! The challenging part is the puffed sleeved and chest that seems intricate.
As a Sailor Moon stan since the 90’s I have to say that this is a brilliant video that takes such a deep look on details that went off my head when I was watching this as a young girl, and I appreciate them so much more today. Thank you!!!!
SailorMoon is an icon and household name. Sailormoon is what inspired me in everything I love today, art, fashion, femininity, and the beauty of love and magic.
4:35 - yeah, I wish they kept the concept versions of the costumes, they also kinda served to show the esprit of each inner scout (and they are stylish as heck , to say the least). I cosplayed concept costume of Sailor Mercury and still consider it the most iconic out of the bunch💙💙💙💙
This was such an informative and nostalgic video to learn about this show’s fashion influences! When I watched this as a young kid, I loved the colourful outfits of all these female characters, but I never thought about the fashion trends that the show showcased at that time! Super cool! 😊
Honestly I would love a series where you just breakdown all the fashion references in Sailor Moon. You could go by season and point out which are taken form the Manga and which are actually anime originals.
thank you so much for this analysis!! ive been a fan of sailor moon ever since i was little and revisiting this franchise has been such a delight for me in my early 20s. i only recently noticed and started to appreciate the fashion of sailor moon and its influence. this is amazing, thank you so much!!!
i loved the deep dive into the history behind the sailor style uniforms. and i never knew about naoko's og drafts of their outfits ! thx 4 making this vid 💌
I love this video. I was obsessed with Sailor Moon since I saw it in mid 90's. There is one particular dress that a remember. It was a usagis dress when she was captured by Prince Diamand, I believe, inspired by alfons mucha's posters from late XIX early XX century.
@@marieflocon8053 If I remember correctly, the dress was an off-the-shoulder white (at least the animé depicted it that way) with a half-circle ornamental breastplate design on the bust made of gold.
Something about the fashion in Sailor Moon is so beautiful to me! That’s part of the appeal of why I love it so much. Also, I hear that late 80s and early 90s style fashion and hair ribbons is trending again in Japan as part neo-Showa fashion subculture.🤘
One thing that I like about Sailor Moon, is that when the Sailor Scouts are wearing their casual clothes, they LOOK like something a preteen/teen WOULD wear, they don’t look out of place, and they don’t sexualize the characters they basically remind the audience that they ARE teens, while making them look cool, and cute and comfortable, and they look SUPER cool, I’m 13 and I LOVE their style!!
I’m proud that I’ve became an instant fan of the anime since I was 6 years old and as a 33 years old man I’m still a going strong. I had great tastes from the get go lol. I’m amazed how the style especially of the art books is still very much trendy today. Naoko definitely knew where to find her inspiration. Chanel x Sailor Moon is forever iconic.
So this video made me cry like Usagi has arrived. The impact. Like it’s such an amazing thing to see something as much as manga and to show impact sooooooo many people.
I always wondered where the sailor thing came from. It’s very interesting. I love the Sailor moon outfits. So cute. Edit: it makes sense that Pluto would have high fashion and expensive outfits. Pluto is named for Pluto and Pluto was the god of the underworld and mineral riches like gold and diamonds.
Amazing video! The only one I’d say was an error was the Princess Snow Kaguya being influenced by the 1999 wedding gown as she was drawn around 1993/1994; the timeline just doesn’t match. Naoko’s influences came from 80’s and very early 90’s.
I’m fully convinced that the reason I was so into fashion and so picky with clothes since I was a toddler, was because of my love and obsession with Sailor Moon. Never in my tiny years I’d thought that those clothes were actually real. Gorgeous video!! ❤
Naoki Takeuchi should have been a designer rather than an animator/writer, but ironically, I think she has influenced entire generations of fashion because of that
I'm a big fan of both Sailor Moon and this channel and I can truly say that this is one of the most comprehensive videos about the fashion within the franchise, so thank you for this!
Literally love this show, for me it was the first show with a bunch of badass fighting girls that still kept their femininity and respektive style. I always was obsessed with the outfits and still am today
People term to ignore the impact of Sailor Moon. As a gay kid, I been growing up watching sailor moon and you have no idea how much sailor moon is important to me
This video was a delight! I'll admit, as much as I love magical girls, I was just too young to get into Sailor Moon. (my introduction was the often forgotten Mermaid Melody) But even with that, I've always admired the style of the series. It's interesting how it's influenced fashion in future anime, and changed how magical girls are designed. Looking at series before it, which also tended to only have one character, the "magical outfit" was usually a lot more casual, and didn't have matching outfits for the team. Then you have Sailor Moon, and boom! PreCure is a big one, famous for its beautiful matching team designs. Even western series like Winx club got in on it I always like how anime tends to be a lot wilder in their character's outfits, since western cartoons tend to be a lot simpler and less fashionable. PreCure, as I mentioned, always has great outfits. Symphogear's outfits are... Unique. They're certainly wild but I like that, it conveys a lot of personality. Magia Record is very similar, in that a lot of both the magical and casual outfits are often absurd, and definitely a huge mixed bag, but what's good is very good. And I can't go without mentioning Cardcaptor Sakura, which honestly probably deserves a video in itself Some of my person favorites and biggest inspirations come from the very obscure Aikatsu series, which is consistently stellar in both it's concert and casual outfits So yeah, magical girl fashion. It's pretty cool
Not sure if anyones mentioned this but for the sukebans altered long school dresses, it was in order to no and weapons underneath the dresses like the delinquent baddies they were I just find that so interesting
One thing worth mentioning is that the Sailor Suits in the manga were all given a unique quirk. Eventually Naoko phased out most of them out with each transformation upgrade where everything got identical in all but color. Ami's sailor suit had no arm cuffs on the top and her earrings had 3 studs in each earlobe. Makoto's had a pink potpourri belt and rose shaped earrings. Minako's belt was the Venus Love Me Chain and her earrings were simple studs. Rei's outfit had a brooch clasp above her skirt (Naoko almost always forgot to draw it) and star shaped earrings. Also none of the footwear were identical. Ami wore knee high boots, Rei high heels, Makoto laced/heeled boots, and Minako heeled shoes with ballet ribbons. The PGSM outfits included the unique outfit flourishes, but the anime didn't. All versions kept the shoes though. The Outers had unique outfit touches too. Michiru wore ballet heels and short gloves and a choker with a jewel and gold clasp. Haruka wore short boot, plain choker, short gloves and a single hoop earring. Setsuna had no stripes on her sailor collar, large shield earrings, a choker with a garnet, a belt with keys on it, and no arm-hole cuffs like Ami. Hotaru had a completely unique sailor suit with petal sleeves, an elaborate brooch, saturn shaped earrings with a dangling tear shape, and a flared crystal brooch. Chibiusa has her specific brooch and odango shields as does Sailor Moon and they have Sailor Moon had the super upgrade, but the Sailor Moon outfit had multiple different variations on the moon tiaras/earrings, her transformation brooches and her red boots. The Eternal Sailor Moon design is kind of a "and the kitchen sink" design, so I won't get into it though.
Wow!! As a Japanese/sailor moon fan/used to be a sailor-fuku brand owner, you’re analytics is so accurate and fun to watch. Especially parts you compared to US culture to sailor fuku was so informative!!
id definitely recommend doing a similar video on ai yazawas work ( nana or paradise kiss) she used to do fashion design and you can tell through her work/ the animes
I loooove that Naoko Takeuchi chose different design houses to represent the heroes and villains in this series. Picking different costume themes for good vs evil is obviously super common, but drawing inspiration from Chanel vs Mugler (and others of course, for both) is just....next level.
I’ve been missing out on the gorgeous design of haute coture late 1980s to early 1990s. It feels really special with all these designs in 1992 since that is the year I was born
I wonder since the author was so heavily inspired if she didn’t get “copyrighted” or anything related for adapting these creations into character designs? Anyone can make an animation and get heavily inspired by these runaway designs without getting into trouble? Some are just inspired but others are the exact design, I’m asking as an artist who loves fashion and wants to create her own stories
@@yongxia that's a very bad thing. I understand you can't copyright a shirt, pants etc but when it has a very specific unique style and literally becomes an art piece, how in the world is in not possible to copyright that specific look?? The outfits are stylish and each one has a lot of hidden meanings and symbolism to the characters.

I’d give anything to see the mood boards for the series…
watched this entire show and read the whole manga when i was 11 😭😭😭 the fashion was always so iconic, the girls definitely had some crazy outfits but they also had adorable ones
and each character had a wardrobe of sorts, in that they'd rotate between a few outfits unique to them through the entire show
OmG me too!!!
Same! Sailormoon was my first manga.. I used to collect the colored art panels because theyre gorgeous.. totally obsessed when I was 11-12
Also, not always color-coded like Super Sentai/Power Rangers
YES YES YES I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU POSTED THIS 😭💖💖 FOR MONTHS I'VE BEEN HOPING FOR A GOOD ANALYSIS ON THIS TOPIC! Thank you, you never fail to make me happy!
Literally the moment we've all been waiting for😭
I adore that each of the girls have their own sense of style, so they dont always have to wear one color in their civilian outfits.
The poster mentions that Hakama was worn by boys at 2:14. Additional info is always good though
This video may have changed or altered my life now in some way…
This sounds amazing!!
i just binged the whole 5 seasons of the 90s this months. i'm so glad you made this video. so good
where did you watch it?? pleasee

The haute couture references in the costuming are superb! I had no idea they were based on real fashion of the time.
you should make a video where u style a modern version of the sailor moon girls
I agree!
yasssss i miss life according to tess!
Okay, I had zero idea the costuming was so well-thought out until now!!! I always loved the fashion of Sailor Moon, but didn't know the references. This is super cool, Naoko Takeuchi is a genius.
I had to do a double take at first. Moderngurlz does SAILOR MOON???? YES PLEASE IVE BEEN FED
whenever i learn anything about Sailor Moon I realize more and more how much of an impact it had on me as a child and how much I love it. Loved this video, thank you so much.
sailor moon will always be one of the most iconic girlboss animes in history 💗💖
One thing that popped in my mind that was missed is there's a bonus chapter (I believe in SuperS but might be Stars) with Sailor Gucci and Sailor Chanel! Or rather, Chibi Usa's friends buy outfits that turn them into Sailor Guccicci and Sailor Channel. Sailor Moon had so many fun bonus chapters and that one is really cute, definitely worth the quick read.
Honestly would love this to be a series! I think another comment mentioned Nana but one good option is Jojo's Bizzarre Adventure which has entire characters named after fashion houses and has collaborated with Gucci
yes i love this!! sailor moon is basically a combination of everything naoko takeuchi likes and her life (she’s said her personality is most like usagi and named the parents and brother after her family irl)
the series referenced fashion so much but is now being used as inspiration for collabs. takeuchi is a fan of anna sui and they’ve had several collabs
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE, TURN IT UP!!!
ps: you should do jojo's, their fashion is so sick, too
Yes Rohan Kishibe is a fashion plate!
Sailor moon for high fashion for women, Jojo for high fashion for men and Bleach for street/casual 2000 fashion
Yes! I was just about to comment about jojo, araki’s fashion design and sense is absolutely astonishing
@@herohamza1196 srry it was supposed to be ps
ooh especially the jjba and gucci collab !!
Please, don't tell me i'm the only one that was IN LOVE with Tokyo Mew Mew outfits - from school uniforms to their suits. Literaly ICONIC!!!
I WAS OBSESSED W TOKYO MEW MEW AS A KID!! I still have some figurines!
Imagine if someone styled Tokyo mew mew for a potential live action
I loved the direct comparisons you made with images of Japanese fashion at the time. It is so clear that the clothes were actually really on trend.
セーラームーンには、色んな時代の歴史と、可愛さが詰まってますね!
SailorMoon is an icon and household name. Sailormoon is what inspired me in everything I love today, art, fashion, femininity, and the beauty of love and magic.
as a half japanese girl who has grown up with sailor moon, thank you so much for this analysis! it makes me so happy!
Super cool! 😊
This video was amazing. I love when people deep dive into Sailor Moon. Plus any video that mentions Sailor Moon and The Nanny is automatic top tier.
This Video is a treasure!! SailorMoonXFashion ICONIC!!
Honestly I would love a series where you just breakdown all the fashion references in Sailor Moon. You could go by season and point out which are taken form the Manga and which are actually anime originals.
As a kid usagi transforming into sailor moon was so beautiful and feminine to me.
I love school skirts,pleated skirts,stockings
Still do.
thank you so much for this analysis!! ive been a fan of sailor moon ever since i was little and revisiting this franchise has been such a delight for me in my early 20s. i only recently noticed and started to appreciate the fashion of sailor moon and its influence. this is amazing, thank you so much!!!
i loved the deep dive into the history behind the sailor style uniforms. and i never knew about naoko's og drafts of their outfits ! thx 4 making this vid 💌
I love this video. I was obsessed with Sailor Moon since I saw it in mid 90's. There is one particular dress that a remember. It was a usagis dress when she was captured by Prince Diamand, I believe, inspired by alfons mucha's posters from late XIX early XX century.
Was it in the Color pink salmon?
@@marieflocon8053 If I remember correctly, the dress was an off-the-shoulder white (at least the animé depicted it that way) with a half-circle ornamental breastplate design on the bust made of gold.
@@_Just_Another_Guy that's the one. In manga it was even more resembling mucha's dress.
As a lifelong Sailor Moon fan this is the most SICKENING video. I love thissss
Something about the fashion in Sailor Moon is so beautiful to me! That’s part of the appeal of why I love it so much. Also, I hear that late 80s and early 90s style fashion and hair ribbons is trending again in Japan as part neo-Showa fashion subculture.🤘
Yes!! I’ve begun wearing the gorgeous Bodikon fashion that my mother wore and I love it!
There's nothing better than waking up and having breakfast with a fashion inspired Sailor Moon video. I really enjoyed it!
The hakama is so pretty!
I LOVE SAILOR MOON!!! Its such a timeless fashion icon anime, with fierce women fighting to save the world. I love the whole aesthetic so much!
30 years later and sailor moon still shows us its impact.
i can't express how incredible this video is. i wish this was a photo book so i could have this on my coffee table. it's so interesting!
The aesthetic of Sailor Moon is god tier. It's so memorable.
I love sailor moon
Amazing video! The only one I’d say was an error was the Princess Snow Kaguya being influenced by the 1999 wedding gown as she was drawn around 1993/1994; the timeline just doesn’t match. Naoko’s influences came from 80’s and very early 90’s.
I’m fully convinced that the reason I was so into fashion and so picky with clothes since I was a toddler, was because of my love and obsession with Sailor Moon.
Never in my tiny years I’d thought that those clothes were actually real.
Gorgeous video!! ❤
Naoki Takeuchi should have been a designer rather than an animator/writer, but ironically, I think she has influenced entire generations of fashion because of that
every character looks amazing ,the designs the colour .the 90s fashion ,the background and all the easter eggs
As a gay kid, I been growing up watching sailor moon and you have no idea how much sailor moon is important to me
All her knowledge in fashion really payed off to make these characters so fabulous
perfect thing to watch while breaking my fast
Sailor Moon is my favorite anime of all time. This video is my ecstacy
Even western series like Winx club got in on it
I always like how anime tends to be a lot wilder in their character's outfits, since western cartoons tend to be a lot simpler and less fashionable. And I can't go without mentioning Cardcaptor Sakura, which honestly probably deserves a video in itself
Some of my person favorites and biggest inspirations come from the very obscure Aikatsu series, which is consistently stellar in both it's concert and casual outfits
So yeah, magical girl fashion. It's pretty cool
I loved mermaid melody!! It was (and still is) very popular in my country❤
Not sure if anyones mentioned this but for the sukebans altered long school dresses, it was in order to no and weapons underneath the dresses like the delinquent baddies they were I just find that so interesting
I was surprised she didn’t put that the Fez quote “ she came in yesterday lookin all sailor moon and sh*t “ lol
I love Sailor moon thank you for making this
One thing worth mentioning is that the Sailor Suits in the manga were all given a unique quirk.
I think you should talk about Lady Gaga's fashion. It is very inspiring to many artists.
THIS IS LITERALLY MY DREAM VIDEO AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This was fascinating! One of my favourite videos. I knew Naoko Takeuchi was fashion influenced, but not to this extent.
YAS! She did her homework! Great video!
id definitely recommend doing a similar video on ai yazawas work ( nana or paradise kiss) she used to do fashion design and you can tell through her work/ the animes
I loooove that Naoko Takeuchi chose different design houses to represent the heroes and villains in this series. Picking different costume themes for good vs evil is obviously super common, but drawing inspiration from Chanel vs Mugler (and others of course, for both) is just....next level.
Nana would be an INCREDIBLE anime to cover about in terms of its fashion
basically anything by Yazawa Ai has amazing fashion! like paradise kiss which is set in a fashion school!
Some are just inspired but others are the exact design, I’m asking as an artist who loves fashion and wants to create her own stories
you cannot copyright “fashion”, if she had used the fashion brand names then no, brands are trademarked but not design
@@yongxia that's a very bad thing. I understand you can't copyright a shirt, pants etc but when it has a very specific unique style and literally becomes an art piece, how in the world is in not possible to copyright that specific look?? Knowing this, I would never become a designer. There is no protection for their art whatsoever 🤦♀️
@@sweetLemonist it's clearly an homage and it's not like Takeuchi claimed she came up with all of those ideas on her own

Europe's fashion houses are often "inspired" by indigenous designs from Mexico and Central America which are supposed to be intangible heritage by Unesco. I don't think that Japanese illustrators have legal problems for "inspired".
The famouse strawberry dress got copied by the designers and artist.
I love the fashion of this anime, because the pieces can still be found or adapted to look like in the anime but if you wear them they don't look out of place even if the show is old😍🥰
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure next please! There's a whole database for it! Araki loved drawing inspiration from high fashion and magazine covers :D
I would love love love to see a fashion analysis on the anime Nana PLEASE theres an overwhelming amount of real pieces in that manga and anime!
Also fun fact the writer of sailor moon is the writer of Hunter X Hunter's wife and she designed Gon.
Hot take: the og 90s anime is superior to Crystal in every way and I say it as the manga fan. Sometimes manga material doesn't translate as good in anime.
@Rach Ikr? 😜
This video is such a visual feast. Thank you for all the work put into this.
I was so excited when I saw the title of this video! I love Sailor Moon and fashion so I couldn't wait to watch 💗🌙
Whoa, growing up i was not only drawn to the magical and colourful aesthetic of Sailor Moon but their clothes and outfits themselves. This video CLEARLY shows exactly why they stood out so much. A fulll Life mimics Art and Art mimics life moment. love this fashion forward vid :p
If you decide to do more on anime, I'd love to see an analysis on the clothing from Bleach. The author, Tite Kubo, is widely considered to be one of the best costume designers in manga and it's well known that if he didn't go into anime, he would have been a fashion designer. The outfits are stylish and each one has a lot of hidden meanings and symbolism to the characters.
The Quincies in particular wear the best clothes!
@@isabellafelipedeoliveiraca6698 personally the arrancars outfits are my fave! But the quincies are seriously good too!
