Sailor Moon: The Original English Dub Cast at Anime Expo 2014

- For many, Sailor Moon was a major catalyst that sparked an interest in Japanese animation and culture. Next to Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon made up one-half of a particularly influential anime-focused afternoon action block. The Sailor Moon series was a huge influence on many children growing up in the 1990's, especially young girls. The Sailor Scouts were childhood heroes and role models--a source of inspiration and empowerment.
In honor of Sailor Moon's 20th anniversary and the upcoming remake, Anime Expo is pleased to welcome the classic Sailor Moon series' voice cast for their first full reunion appearance in the United States! Anime Expo 2014 Guests of Honor, Linda Ballantyne (Sailor Moon, seasons 3 and 4), Susan Roman (Sailor Jupiter), Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars), Karen Bernstein (Sailor Mercury, seasons 1 and 2), Stephanie Morgenstern (Sailor Venus, seasons 1 and 2), Ron Rubin (Artemis), Toby Proctor (Tuxedo Mask - most SM/1st half of R), Jennifer Cihi (music,vocals), and voice director John Stocker will all be participating in a Sailor Moon panel.

DiC and Cloverway Sailor Moon! My childhood
One thing the fans might not have realized, is that the method of dubbing which the now defunct Optimum Productions (where the show was dubbed in Mississauga, Ontario) used, isn't the same method which is used normally for dubbing anime into English. So outtakes weren't as commonplace (though they did happen, but usually only for flubbing or missing the cue line).
Unlike most dubbing which has a scriptwriter look at the translation and just see what words of similar meaning would fit the lip sync at a given time stamp, Optimum would go frame by frame, marking the lip movements on a clear 35mm film roll which matched up to the 35mm film reel that the show's current scene was on (similar to how movie projectors used to be). The agent would rotate a control wheel back and forth which allowed them to shift forward and back through the scene and see just how much lip movement each frame produced compared to the previous ones for a given character, before repeating the process for the next character on a new roll. This continued for each scene until all the scenes for an episode were complete (the more scenes or more characters involved, the more rolls of clear film used.
That roll which had the markings, was then taken to the script writer who would write the script for that character in the scene on another 35mm clear roll, based upon those markings.
The roll was then realigned to the original projection roll and reviewed, before it would be signed off as ready for the cast member to record in the studio.
The dual reel projector in the ceiling of the studio would then play both reels in sync with each other (the script reel would scroll right to left), and a line on the wall in the center of the script reel (cue line), signaled when the cast member was to speak. So as a word scrolled and reached the line, the actor would say that line, stretching out or shortening how long they spoke depending on how long it took the script to pass through that line. Hence why Katie was talking about doing several episodes at a time, as she only would see the scenes Rei appeared in for any given episode, and only know what her lines were, not anyone else's.
In the end, the process was more costly for the producers and their clients, but cast members wouldn't be in the studio as long as a result.
I still think this is a better dubbing Method than ADR.
The rhythmoband method? I heard Netflix dubs use that method now
I'm surprised there wasn't a "Passing of the Tiara" ceremony between the old Sailor Moon Dub voice cast and the new one.
Because they were replaced due to ageism. The new sailor moon VIZ management wanted young people to bring in more comic-con fans. More people will show up if they're young.

@@anthonyfranco88 funny you say that. I actually looked and almost ever sailor guardian was actually older than their predecessors when they were Sailor guardians. Like Traci, Terry, and Linda were all in between 34-37 when they were cast back in the 90s and Stephanie was 37 when she was cast in 2014. Just some fun trivia, also like how Kate, Cristina, and Cherami were actually a small bit older than their predecessors when getting cast.

She has the right to be on this panel just like Tracey and Terri.
She's honestly my favorite voice of Sailor Moon just for her personality. Yeah, she had trouble adjusting, and it's really jarring when you're so used to Usagi's / Serena's voice being high-pitched, but I believe she did the best she could, and I have nothing but respect for her in that regard. She is amazing, and I hope to meet her eventually.
I want to be a voice actor, writer, animator, etc. (pretty much everything in the industry), and Linda is one of the strongest forces that keep me motivated.

Thomas Vaccaro tbh I I don't like Linda because she used a really weird voice back then for Serena and in this video she sounds like a normal person and she could've used that cute voice back then instead of her weird fat old lady with an eating disorder voice .
A year later, but....I agree with you. She is also not my favorite however, I admire her dedication to the character, and additionally, Terri Hawkes gave her the highest praise. :)
I like Linda's voicing of Usagi/Serena, too. She may not be perfect at it, but she can certainly make me laugh all day and night; both at that and in real life!

Beautiful comment :) When she was about to start singing, I was shaking in my seat because 15 or so years ago I had the VHS tape of the episode with "My Only Love" and I would rewind and replay it over and over again. Jennifer has such a beautiful voice.

I don't care if the old dub censored the Uranus/Neptune thing (which is the most common complaint of the DiC dub, but keep in mind the standards of western television back in the day). I always loved the DiC voices and music over both the Japanese and ViZ versions. And it's not just nostalgia talking either. These ladies are genuinely good VAs.

My sister REFUSES to watch anything with the new voice actors on the Viz dub. Which means to this day, she hasn’t seen stars and will probably never see it. These voices are so good and iconic.

Linda Ballantyne is sooo comical! I can understand why she was cast as the voice of Usagi/Serena for the Cloverway versions of Seasons 3 and 4. She practically epitomizes Usagi/Serena's goofiness! I'll bet she could even pass for a professional stand-up comedian! I like those shirts that she and Karen are wearing, by the way.
And Jennifer, you are such an excellent singer. Thank you so much for doing your musical performances in Sailor Moon. I LOVE "The Power of Love"! That's a nice-looking dress that your wearing, by the way.

I think Terri hawkes sailor moon is the best. I love her voice and I've known it since I was a kid. I still have a hard time watching the other dubbed version on hulu because the voice acting sucks and I'm not used to it
American dubbing companies have no respect compared to japan where the same voice actor is re hired for the majority of a product iteration even decades later.
Karen Bernstein unfortunately retired in 2005.

Cord Pulley I think it has been just not the original DIC dub, I've seen the later episodes on YT and they were dubbed in English. You could also just watch subtitled episodes?!

What I find upsetting is that Linda doesn’t usually reference Terri. Linda talks about her decision to accept the love from the fans, which is great, but she overshot and ended up developing a style of speaking about the character that caused her to accept the fruit of Terri’s labor. She basically took the credit for Terri’s legacy. Linda makes statements that conveniently allow you to think that she was always “the voice of Sailor Moon” unless you know better. She never brings up the fact that she was the third voice herself. She always tells “funny” stories about how it was to be “THE VOICE” of Serena and Sailor Moon without any recognition to Terri or even Tracy. I think that’s what bothers me most about Linda. Ironically, the legendary Terri, who is INDISPUTABLY the most signature and iconic TRUE voice of Sailor Moon, is the total opposite. Terri constantly gives shoutouts to Linda and Tracy despite being the most authentic voice the character ever had. Terri is world class. I just wish Linda was more humble. Having said that, I do agree with Susan that it takes a lot of guts to try and fill someone’s shoes and since they were Terri’s, she was pretty much doomed before she even started. I want to give Linda credit for taking on the challenge, but I’m just so put off by what she did once she got there. She massively overshot and it’s hard to root for her because of it. Terri Hawkes, on the other hand, has basically proven herself a hero time and time again. Humility is everything.
I completely agree with you! I've recently seen Terris interviews and in fact she is very humble and appreciate and respects the other actresses. Also Terri IS Sailor Moon to many of us, whether her voice fit the character or not. It was her portrayal as S.M that many of us will always remember. She seems so sweet and humble in person!
Hmmm, my best bet is Linda is playing sailor as a sort of alter ego since she knows she ain't the original voice... So for instance, say you needed to impersonate your mom on the phone.... You would not like to keep on talking about how you're not your mom, it would distract you. And stop you from really embodying the character istivs of mom

Emily Lentz Are you kidding? She absolutely does! Most of the fans of the series love Sailor Moon because of what Terri did with the character. Nearly ALL of what Linda dubbed didn’t even make it to air. Most people don’t know her work, only Terri’s. This is why she seems delusional and conveniently naive about all of this and she just goes with it and acts like she was the voice all along. No one is saying she can’t speak about what the experience was like voicing Sailor Moon. Of course she can. It’s her right, because she did voice the character. I’m just upset she’s not at all honest about what she contributed to the legacy of the character. The legacy is Terri’s, not Linda.
I don't get it how come nobody likes Linda well I mean like for like some people I mean like she was like I'm annoying and not like perfect for the role but I think that she was different from like the rest she stands out and that's what makes you special and I like her because of that she's my favorite Sailor Moon actor of all

She's my favorite personality, not my favorite voice. Terri Hawkes is my childhood so I'm biased towards her. Linda started off rocky, but she really made the character her own after she got warmed up.

And I'm surprised because right now she sounds more like a normal person and I think she could've used that adorable voice she has now back then in the 90's.

Rebecca Wolf Terri Hawkes was my favorite voice of all time! She was the second and longest running voice of Sailor Moon. Tracey Moore was only the first 6 episodes.

People need to cut Linda Ballantyne some slack. Even Terri Hawkes said at events that she fully supported Linda taking over the role. Linda struggled with it because she didn't know whether to imitate Terri as much as she could or make it her own. She went home one day after a recording session and told her husband that she couldn't do this because she wasn't Terri. He then told her that she didn't have to be and that she needed to make it her own.

We have got to stop acting like “an accurate translation to the Japanese” is the right path for all anime. Bye? It’s different cultures.
