And if one tenth of that CO2 was instead carbon monoxide we would all be dead within minutes. Even concentrations as low as 0.0001% of CO are fatal if you are exposed for an extended amount of time. Funny how such a small amount of gas can be something to worry about...
But this congressman doesn't even understand the difference between seasons and climate, so I wouldn't expect him to grasp such an unintuitive concept as "trace gasses in the atmosphere can reflect infrared radiation"
Edit to say: Just realized I forgot to move the decimal in my conversion of PPM to %. It's actually 0.01% of atmospheric CO that would be lethal to humans. My point still stands however. Trace amounts of gasses can't be written off as "harmless and irrelevant" simply because of their low percentage.

Very simple. The orbit of the planet and it's proximity to the sun and the tilt of the earth are what typically cause the climate to change and it takes THOUSANDS OF YEARS. What is happening now has only taken about 150 years. And, the CO2 levels naturally LAG the increase in the earths surface temperatures due to being released by thawing permafrost. If an actual vote by the people happened, and it included real information and properly set expectations, your side would never win that vote. Fossil fuels are literally life-saving to an enormous percentage of the population, and were being harvested in a way that resulted in a net-zero carbon contributing footprint under Donald Trump. The use of fossil fuels means less deforestation as people no longer need wood for energy. It means carbon emissions that function as plant-food. It means lower cost for everyone, and there are at least 300 years worth of deposits for the entire world on US soil alone. You don't think in that time a better or more "sustainable" energy production method could be developed?

I can confirm what this man says about CEOs being scared to death of these regulations. I work in the cement production industry for the worlds largest cement corporation, and took part in a European works council 2 or 3 years ago when these issues were first being pushed hard. Senior management at a global level were involved in the discussions, and it was clear that they were very concerned about the implications to the business, due to the high levels of CO2 that our industry produces. The fact that cement is absolutely necessary to build houses etc that will last decades is not taken into account either. I got the impression that they had been told to toe the line or the company would get carbon taxed into oblivion. The political weight behind this is frightening.

Just like anything else.....wait long enough & the tech will catch up to the problem. Hopefully, soon. One point---the goal has to be 'carbon-neutral'.....human emissions balancing with nature and carbon capture...not total elimination of emissions, which isn't needed and not practical.

It’s not control, it’s just that the market isn’t set up to respond to this fast enough, so it needs a push. Nobody is being forced to buy EV’s. But if they are affordable and better than traditional combustion cars and they help prevent a catastrophe, then it would make sense to eventually force people to buy EV’s. That would be pretty drastic though and it’s impractical right now. But even if they’re wrong about climate change (which they aren’t) they wouldn’t be doing this out of a lust for power. They’d just be wrong about the threat they see coming and they’d be acting out of a desire to motivate that threat.

In Earth's atmosphere, carbon dioxide is a trace gas that plays an integral part in the greenhouse effect, carbon cycle, photosynthesis, and oceanic carbon cycle. It is one of several greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of Earth. The current global average concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is 421 ppm as of May 2022 (0.04%).[1] This is an increase of 50% since the start of the Industrial Revolution, up from 280 ppm during the 10,000 years prior to the mid-18th century.[2][1][3] The increase is due to human activity.[4] Burning fossil fuels is the main cause of these increased CO2 concentrations and also the main cause of climate change.[5] Other large sources of CO2 from human activities include cement production, deforestation, and biomass burning.

Stop pushing this Religion nonsense. The Sun this solar systems Star rules this Solar System, then it’s the orbit in said orbit changes over time, then it’s the angle of this Earth sits in it’s said orbit, the region of the galaxy that the Sun with its Planets traverses at anyone time as it orbits this Galaxy, interstellar radiation, intergalactic radiation. Stop pushing the very ancient and primitive humans who have Been visited by extraterrestrials and who see very high technology and who think those in the said machines are gods. If you really know the true origins of the 3 Abrahamic religions and you do not you will know what I say it it all comes from Sumer and long before.

Co2 is a greenhouse gas. We need it in the air to reduce heat loss to space so that we do not freeze to death.
But the reverse is also true. If we put more of it in the atmosphere then less heat escapes and the climate changes. That's why we see more extreme weather events now than when we were children
