You know how Shunsui's attitude is kinda split: a lazy womanizer on the surface, but an underhanded genius when the situation calls for it? That's how his swords are, in a way, the "clingy" Katen spirit and the deadly Kyokotsu spirit. Also, the zanpakuto spirits would mainly take a similar form to the user but in Shunsui's case, you have 2 females, representing his deepest desires; his desire for a family after losing his brother and sister in law (Katen) and the desire to protect those loved ones by any means necessary (Kyokotsu). Kyokotsu being a child may also represent the fact that Shunsui rarely shows that side of himself compared to his "cavalier attitude".
The "play" of Shunsui's Bankai could also be a representation of everything that's happened to his family.
Act 1: Sharing of the Wound - His brother is stricken with the Curse of Ise
Act 2: Bed of Shame - His brother is bedridden due to the Curse and dies
Act 3: Dango's Abyss - The despair Shunsui feels at his death, and seeing Nanao's mother at the realization that she can't escape the Curse
Act 4: Thread Cutting Wind Pipe - Nanao's mom being Executed for "losing" the House's family treasure
the 2nd sword is not his, it was given to him to hide it,,,,its nanao's and its literally said the main spirit ''birthed her'' to help hide the fact (the powers and spirit) .... when given to her it changes it shape and becomes its true form
@@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj His sword "gave birth" to the second to hide Nanao's Shinken Hakkyōken. That second Katen Kyokotsu still belongs to him. It did not, in any way, become Nanao's spirit.

I’ve always seen Shunsui’s source of power as depression. The whole aura he gives off during his Bankai is his depression manifesting. It’s interesting that others feel it, and they can’t believe it’s actually him, since they see him as such a laid back guy. Kind of reminds me of artists who create their work when their emotions are heavily weighing on them.

@@nenmaster5218 It's actually an amazing bankai all things considered. Kinda makes you wonder what kind of mental state shunsui has considering their zanpaktous are supposed to be reflections of their souls. Dude is beyond such things as beauty and ugliness. Lucky for shunsui he's pretty badass before even reaching bankai, so he has little cause to worry about it killing himself. Gotta admire a man who is willing to kill himself to achieve something.
First person I've seen other than me that thought this way.
I think its more accurate that the two sides of Katen Kyokotsu are representations of the two half of his personality.
The child represents his more carefree, playful and even lazy side. As a child just does whatever they want, it fits with how he acts most of the time. This immaturity is why she's physically smaller.
The adult on the other hand is a representation of his more mature side. Able to put aside his goofiness and take things seriously. Best represented by her um... physical maturity.
Them being woman best represents his love for the opposite sex, and that he is much more gentile and approachable then most other captains.
All in all i find that this is one of the best designed zanpaukto, in abilites and in design to match the characters personality. Good Job Kubo!

I like the theory , maybe he’ll give more in depth explanations with stuff like this and the characters relations to their zanpaukto when the new arc gets animated and released. I’d love that as a bonus thing at the end of the season or maybe one explanation after the outro song, kinda like how Naruto did with Kakashi and Iruka

This is my favorite Zanpakutou in the series. I love how the Bankai's activation represents Shunsui's actual state of mind by creating that gloomy aura. The dude is pretty chill on the outside, but through his backstory (at least if I recall correctly) it's easy to assume that he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Which he hides from others by putting up the facade of a happy-go-lucky drunkard.
I also enjoy the theory of him and Katen loving each other, sort of like a forbidden love between Shinigami and Zanpakutou. Shunsui comes across as super flirtatious with other women, but his heart actually belonging to someone he cannot be with is a neat idea that I'm very much a fan of. Maybe the play is also partially based on their story? Who knows.

Hes definitely the coolest captain but Kenpachi is by far my favorite . i hope they bring back the anime so we can see kenpachi learn his bankai and see squad 4's captains death because she was the captain of squad 11 at one time so she is super powerful.

I think his bankai is a manifestation of depression itself. More spacifically the depression his older brother was going through. The fist dan was the abuse and anger he projected on the wife and shinsui, the second his greif in his actions and further stages of depression. The third is the drowning feeling that you and your loved ones are thrown into. And the fourth suicide. I believe this series of events must have impacted shinsui so much as a child, especially bc he was wise and observant for his age, that his zampacto was deeply effected by it
Shunsui's sword is almost as insane as a Stand... That's a real tough feat for a writer to pull off
I haven't read any of the Shunsui fights, but while watching the fight with Stark, I remember thinking how hard it must be to write a power based on colors in a black and white medium.

His color--based skill actually made me wonder if the entire attire of the Gotei-13 was designed around Shunsuis skill. When he threw away his white coat to become all black, that was some higher level of writing.
Anyone remember the filler where the souls of the zanpaktou were forced outside and kyoraku took advantage of the situation to have dinner and romance with his'.. I remember he didn't want to help fight the bad guy at all and actually looked at the bright side of the situation. Also the other captains were starting to worry about him because they looked down upon that relationship and wanted their powers back. Kyoraku was so deep.
Yeah, I'm still wondering if Kubo was impressed by that filler-episode and then used that Katen image in manga or the creators of anime used Kubo's ideas of Zanpakto Spirits

Shunsui's Zanpakuto is deeply connected with his love for his brother. I'd go as far as to say it mirrors his brother's life, and I'll explain why. Before we get to the sword itself let's evaluate Shunsui. Shunsui's personality has a duality to it, he is at times calm and mellow, or he's very focused and serious. I believe his efforts to have fun and the temperament he can maintain outside of fights is to either pay homage to or emulate his brother. I say this because at one point Shunsui had directly told his brother how he had mellowed out due to the presence of his wife's kindness. This alone is a stretch because it implies alot, that Shunsui simply can't be the kind of guy who gets serious when necessary. An also how when he says this to his brother, it implies Shunsui himself isn't of like mind and also isn't mellow. However I just can't get past the big highs and lows to Shunsui's behavior throughout the story, especially his truest colors in the end ark. It really comes off as something he tries to do rather then something he would do naturally given some subtext.
But that's already a lengthy explaination on one detail of Shunsui, let's cover the sword. This can be surprisingly easier to explain, but still is more theory and assumption then anything. First we have the short sword, this spirit was in possession of Nanao's family Zanpakuto. This mirrors how his brother wanted to protect his daughter and the legacy of his wife's family. The sword, is Nanao's stand in while the Zanpakuto that spirit held is the legacy of his wife and daughters family. It's a reach, but all symbolism isn't one for one.
And lastly is the larger spirit, what can I say here? She's a voluptuous women that appears during his Bankai, the one that is a play. The fact his sword spirit needs to be there mirrors how his brother found the company of his wife so important. The fact it's a play can almost be a jab at how Shunsui is living a play of his brothers life with his own sword spirits as wife and daughter.
So TL:DR, the fact his sword spirits mirror a daughter and wife parallel to his brothers life doesn't seem coincidental and when we look closer some of the light symbolism supports this. An Shunsui's behavior itself supports the idea he himself is functioning as the stand in for his brother in this "play" or "act" style dynamic he has with his Zanpakuto. The Zanpakuto is at the end of the day you, but if all of Shunsui is consumed in love for his brother it makes sense it manifest in a weird but touching homage to him.

ANTRAX all Captains must have bankai or defeat the current squad captain in battle to become a captain.
Casey Jones yes but aizen has his broken shikai ability so he just used the hypnosis to show them a BANKAI. Though I do think he has one since he stated he stated to be at the pinnacle of shingami powers
Aizen's bankai has never been revealed.
I always imagined that Aizen bankai can manipulate reality, make illusions real. And it could even fit in Bleach lore, because we have character that can manipulate Past and character who can manipulate Future. So technically there should be character who can manipulate Present.

I could never really fully figure how the Shikai and Bankai appeared to operate “differently” but impressive vid Tekking and maybe how Shunsui has freaking devil’s luck so to speak but wasn’t there a panel in the manga where nanao and the “smaller” spirit were seen together?

@@Marcusjnmc rereading the manga, it seems to imply that Shunsui asked Katen to hide the Ise sword, by which she created Kyokotsu to do so. My understanding of zanpakuto is that since they're given sentience, hearts, souls and everything that they become real beings. Influenced by Shunsui's reiatsu, the asauchi became Katen. Following that, either she split herself, or obtained another asauchi to create Kyokotsu.
Going by the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc of the anime, which Kubo was heavily involved in and which he used to reveal zanpakuto souls like Katen and Kyokotsu, Ukitake's Sogyo no Kotowari was a twin spirit zanpakuto. Hence probably splitting a zanpakuto into 2 spirits possible.
On the other hand, zanpakuto spirit Yachiru Kusajihi was revealed to have one herself, Sanpo Kenju. So maybe the asauchi theory is also credible.
They interact in the Brave Souls version lf the Spirits Rebellion
I've always imagined the Asauchi like this: every student gets one, and they're mostly identical. As the Shinigami trains, the blade begins to bond with them, creating or awakening the unique spirit within. Eventually, the Shinigami will learn the name of their Zanpakuto through communication with the spirit and release it for the first time. Once the shinigami seal their Zanpakuto for the first time after this, it takes on the unique form of that shinigami's Zanpakuto. So, based on this, for Shunsui - he would have had one Asauchi, that then split into two (similar to the release of Sōgyo no Kotowari) and then remained as two swords once sealed again.
Just my theory anyway.
Ukitake's is longer in Japanese, Shunsui's is longer in English.
Agreed. I think Asauchi is a one sword to be given to the students. Then as you said, once the student managed to learn the name, hence it becomes a zanpakuto. Then in a sealed form, it may appear again as a normal Asauchi or have its own design reflecting the owner's general personality or the zanpakuto itself.

Wel guys today bleach was found in the jump scans standing above doctor stone and my hero taking over the biggest part of the page. Tite is doing something. Guess bleach is back
He said last month he was really bored and would be up for anything with bleach, and the original animators for the anime did a motion test to shop around at companies, not to mention the jump force game used end war arc bleach, and that the manga volumes have had a steadier high selling rate than average for years has led to a lot of speculation that the anime may actually be coming back soon or atleast some special manga one offs or ova's, which is plausible with the evidence as well the demand for it, plus kubo has also stated he wants to re imagine the ending how it should have been

personally, I saw his zanpakuto following something like entertainment as a theme and what different people age groups would find entertaining. like the games in Shikai would entertain a child whereas the play in Bankai would be more catered for the adult

I thought in the manga it was explained Shunsui's smaller sword was actually belonged to Nanoa. I don't remember the exact plot but had something to do with a curse or something that's why it was given to Shunsui?

"Shatter, Kyoka Suietsu" is so cool. I mean, it's basically saying "I'm gonna shatter your reality."
Usually, a command is simply a look into a character's true nature (one of my personal favourites being Kenpachi's "Drink, Nozerashi" as it points to how he can so rarely enjoy fighting, what he loves doing most, due to how fucking powerful his is) and the Zanpakuto's ability. But Aizen's command also doubles as an insult/taunt to his enemies! Simply to use his power, Aizen has to give them the middle finger! I love it!

But considering Nozerashi directly translates to "weathered one" it brings to the mind a sense of relief. Like someone wandering the desert and dying of thirst finally finding water.

Fun Question to ask: if Shunsui had died in that battle, who do you think would've replaced him as captain commander after the business with the Quincies was done with?
I reckon it would've been (from most to least likely) Byakuya, Shinji or Soi-fon. Byakuya because he's a very composed, regal man who is part of a noble family. Shinji because he's a captain from a long time ago and would have the experience (tho there is that whole exile/visored thing to consider to consider). Soi-fon because she is a strong military leader.
I’d have to say shinji because I believe he’s a decent bit older and seems more wise but that’s just my opinion
It's a bit of a stretch but i'd like to see urahara he's strong enough as smart if not smarter then Aizen

I thought the child zanpaktou was the other soul reapers? That sword that became the mirror one when shunsui was fighting lille barro during the 1000 year bloodwar arc? It was gifted to him by nanaos mother. Then when shunsui and nanao were fighting lille, uptake gave it back to her so she could use that.
Edit: nevermind. Kyokotsu created the younger girl to hide nanaos zanpaktou.

I know this a Bleach video but I noticed something you could do for a One Piece video. When Zoro fights Pica, he says “the nine mountains and eight seas, there’s nothing I can’t cut”. The eight seas are East Blue, North Blue, West Blue, South Blue, Paradise, New World, All Blue, and I’m not sure of the last one, maybe the white seas. But what about the nine mountains? Reverse mountain could be one, and maybe the summit of high west is another? It’s just something I noticed and it seemed interesting

Act 3: Three Options, 2 of them let you survive, but the 1 killing you (=evading ‚Responsibility’) is probably the most logical that a person would take,

Yamamoto would have destroyed the human world and shusui would have killed everyone on a few kilometres radius. So yeah mabye best avoided :))

Wait, hold on, those theories are necessary? I thought it was stated that Kyohkotsu was artificially created to hide Nanao's zanpakutoh, which is why it seems like she herself doesn't relate to his abilities in combat, be it shikai or bankai

I always figured that Shunsui essentially performed a soul split just like how Starrk did. He split Katen into two separate Zanpakuto: Katen and Kyokotsu in order to hide Nanao's Zanpakuto within his own, newly created Zanpakuto
Also, when thinking about it, the other dual wielders (Ukitake and Ichigo) also have separate entities in their very soul. Ichigo has both Quincy and Hollow/Shinigami and Ukitake has the Mimihage as well as his own self. When thinking about it like this, it's very possible that taking in Nanao's Zanpakuto caused him to gain his own second Zanpakuto

Well it existed outside of the filler arc. The filler arc just forced the physical forms to manifest. We just wouldn't have seen her till the 1KYBW if not for the filler
