Thanks for this. Billy was a friend of mine and looked out for me when I lived in Philly. I had no idea he went through such heart wrenching experiences. I feel bad that I never asked, because he smiled all the time. He was so sunny and caring. I miss him a lot ...

I was one of those young girls molested by a very very close family member. I'm in therapy. I still have nightmares, and it does confuse you. I'm just happy I never experienced drugs, did drugs, smoke or drink. My mom helped me to have a close clear relationship with God and its in God I trust

There’s a man on TH-cam right now called Kevin that this very thing happened to. Molested repeatedly, told mom, told he was lying, taken to a religious leader who chastised him for it. I believe a lot of times the parents accuse their children of lying about being molested by family friends or relatives. It makes the parent question their own accountability and the fact that they have been hoodwinked . What adult wants to admit they have been tricked by another adult, who was also able to trick a child. It doesn’t make them naive. The devil has many faces. But once the child or children tells, the parent what’s going on what happens next is on the parent !!!!!
Quick true story. My grandmother is super religious and I was scared, as a child, to tell her what this grown man, who was a family friend, was doing to me. Fast forward 35 years later he is arrested for doing things to kids. My grandmother sided with him and said those girls are lying on him and she was going to help post his bail. I then had the courage 35 years later to tell her those girls were not liars because he did the same thing to me. My grandmother looked at me and said, “he must have been playing with you, that doesn’t sound right”. To end this story I want to state the best decision I could have made as a child was to not tell my family what was happening to me. I would have been called fast, bad and ostracized. It is so sad that adults can’t hold themselves accountable for not protecting innocent children. I love my grandmother but she is so naive. By that happening to me it made me a vigilant parent to protect my children from the abuse I endured.

Depending on the era, you'd be better off not telling your family. Not only do you have the burden of having to forgive the one who abused you, but now you have to forgive your unfit parents for calling you a liar, PLUS still have a relationship with them until they are dead and gone. At least of you don't tell them, you never have to know how much they really don't care about you.

This was my first time hearing about this man and it made me sad to know that he was knowingly being molested by this older man, his mother did nothing about it; even almost as if she blamed him in so many ways and she continued to let the abuse go on. Then to know that what he enjoyed doing, which was to sing and perform, Mr. Billy was also led to feel like he couldn’t live in his own truth all of his life even when he DID tell his mother the truth about what was happening to him. The audacity of his family to think that just because they’re related to him by blood that they were entitled to his money and anything else valuable that he worked hard for all while living in his trauma every single day of his life until someone else came into the picture and helped him see that it was okay for him to finally live in his truth and not feel shame and guilt. NONE of his family members deserve a lick of what Mr. Billy had earned… Now, I will say this although I empathize with Mr. Billy for all that he’s been through and being preyed on, which leads to a lot of the time the victim becomes the predator; he was totally outta line for assaulting those children and adults because he knew better regardless; may God have mercy on his soul…. In 1979, j was 9 years old, and I came with my family to a church convention called, UNAC. It was for the Pentecostal church. Church of God In Christ. Anyway, I was a drummer and I got a chance to get on the drums and play a little bit. Billy is there, and gets called up to do a solo. So after he does his solo he comes out to the hallway where a lot of people were. But he comes to me and my grandmother and says how much he enjoyed my playing and said that he wanted to work with me and he would like to talk about taking me under his wing and on the road. My grandmother said no. Which I was mad because I knew this was THEE famous Billy Preston. Turned out to be the best NO I was ever given as a kid.
His innocence was horribly torn and destroyed at a very young age. I’ve always enjoyed his music and he seemed so full of life when playing. He is a Legend in his own right. May God rest his soul❤❤❤

Whenever you needed an organist for your session. You always called Mr. Billy Preston. One of the all time great organ players. He's right up there with the Godfather of the jazz organ Mr. Jimmy Smith.
Billy could make an organ speak, English, Spanish, and French! I’ve never heard anyone come close and I know a lot of bad organ players. It was unreal just how amazing he was.

When a child complains about something happening to him or her, the parent should listen and protect the child, period because in the long run it mentally hurts and confuses the child. Billy is a good example of this.

At the age of 10 I lost her and at 14 I ran to her favorite cousin and told her that I was having feelings about the same sex. My cousin laughed and said "your mother told me you was going to come to me She told that you was going to be gay at 2 years old. When I asked her how she felt she said He's just going to have to be my aggot-@ss son but better but no one is going to be able to call him that because they will have to deal with me.! In the mean time let's make sure this boy can fight." A mother knows her child 🥺. My grandmother had the hard time but every one else in the family was like "we all knew!"
My grandmother used to tell me "did you think about me when you decided to be gay you hurt me." My reply was "I don't think a black woman would appreciate finding out her husband is gay my kids will also have to live with the heartbreak of their mother. I can't live with that level of guilt. Besides isn't a sin to lie? I wouldn't be able to sexually satisfy any woman I am with. That's not fair to any of us."

Many times, when what happened to Billy happens, they learn that the only way to receive legitimate attention, affection, connection or bonding is through the zipper. Cognitive dissonance allows one to survive something they may dislike but find themselves participating in it anyway to satisfy the psychological gratification of belonging they see as a greater gain.

Mr. Preston reminds me sooo much of my Uncle Tim. He LITERALLY looked just like him- I kid y'all not! My uncle LOVED him too!!
He was a "church boy" who struggled in a similar way as Mr. Preston did. According to my mom, who was a yr. older than my uncle, a neighborhood ped who posed as a troop leader violated my uncle and at least 4-5 of his peers. They frequently visited this man's home for "fun and games." This eventually led to drinking, ped movies, and "you know what." When my grandmother found out, she was LIVID and almost went to jail!! She forbade him to go back over there, but it was too late. My uncle didn't change; he decided to "quietly" live that life. Heavy drinking helped him deal with the shame. Sadly, he also became a ped, but was never prosecuted. In 1996, he succumbed to the "package." In fact, there's only one gentleman from his group of friends still alive today. The others suffered the same fate as my uncle.
It's a horrible tale that so many in our community could probably share, but it was taboo to talk about back then. I remember as a girl wondering why Uncle Tim never had a girlfriend or any children. Eventually, I understood what the reason was.

I played with Billy and Serena as a member of Ozone we were all on the Motown label. Yeah much of what happened was tragic ! Billy had perfect pitch a gift few musicians have. We toured with Sammy Davis Jr in the early 80,s . His Sister and Mother would often be in attendance at our shows and would sing with us. I'm sure they knew about his sexual preference. As a musician he played on many classic cuts! Rest Easy BP❤

I used to work for Kindred Hospital in Arizona. Billy, whose legal name was William Everett Preston, was one of my patients. A rep from Billy's estate filed a lawsuit against the facility claiming wrongful death, negligence, and elder abuse. Purportedly, during his hospitalization, no one came to see him.
The family tried to see him while he was hospitalized but Joyce went to court & got a court order barring them from visitation.

I am from L.A. and we all heard about the rumors of James Cleveland, and while I can't verify those accusations, if they are true; Mr. James Cleveland has to answer to God! I am an advocate for children, I have always worked with children, and part of the struggle to protect them. I am currently a Therapist, and it's sad how often children are abused, and more than likely the "accusers" get away with it! Of course those children end up in Therapy, because they never heal...smh

People are violated on ALL levels when sexually assaulted. Being sexually assaulted by a man (and statically men who assault boys are 90% heterosexual, NOT gay) does not make a boy grow up gay, or a girl grow up gay (or the world would be effin' FULL of lesbians!) but he can be gay as his sexual orientation dictates and therein lies the guilt (by a world of dominant heterosexuals who regard being gay as perverted/against god/ whatever they try to justify judging someone for simply being who they are. I have relatives that were contemporaries of of Billy's, in my hometown of L.A. A cousin did pots of studio work with Billy, and played on a number of Billy's albums (protecting his privacy: no name). Rev. James Cleveland was prominent in Aretha Franklin's life, (her famous gospel concert film was recorded at his church), and his church was at Slauson and Crenshaw, around rhe corner from my grandparent's home. Cleveland was gay. There is so much that goes on within religions, and no religion is excluded.
