Thank you so much for doing all this research. Mary Wells lived with my family when I was a baby. My mom and older siblings say she used to always sing and write songs and that she was trying to make her big comeback. The story behind how she ended up living with us is very strange. My mom was a dispatcher for western Union and Mary called in asking for help. She was at a greyhound bus station in Miami. My mom told her to call the police but Mary said God had told her that my mom would help her. After picking her up she asked her if she had a place to go. Mary said that she just needed a place to lay low until she got better. Eventually she opened up and told my mom “I am Mary Wells, the singer” She said that people had did her dirty and cheated her out of her money. And she was hiding from a certain man who was abusive to her. She may have lived with us about a year. I was too young to know for sure. she called us her “god children”. Then one day just as randomly as she came, she left. Years later she was singing on a show and my mom said “look she did it! She finally made her comeback” but it was very short lived because she got sick soon after. I have tried to contact her children to let them know that for the year she was missing she was trying to stay clean and sober, she was trying to sort out her life and she was absolutely missing her children She was very deep and misunderstood She wrote songs to clear her mind Then she gave those songs to the world as gifts

The very first Queen of Motown. It saddens me to hear about the tragic events in her life. I truly understand what she was going through I have had somewhat similar events. The unfairness when it came to her being paid her worth is so wrong. Funny thing I have also experienced that as well. I am going to get started back singing in a couple of months. Mary Wells was also the Beatles favorite American singer. The Beatles wanted her to tour with them. And she did an album of their songs. My mother said she was the most down to earth person. She would go to the bathroom at the Greystone ballroon in Detroit. Very friendly unlike Diana Ross was very stuck up.

You should have also mentioned that right after the release of "My Guy" Mary Wells had a top 20 hit singing a duet with Marvin Gay. Also, you should have also talked more about the songs she released after leaving Motown. Mary did release some pretty good songs after leaving Motown such as "Use Your Head," "The Doctor", "Me About You", and "Never Never Leave Me." These songs did not get promoted as much as her Motown songs so they did not become big major hits. I think you should have also mentioned that the Beatles chose Mary to be their opening act when they toured the U.S.

I grew up in Detroit Michigan Carl Carlton and Alicia Myers grew up in my neighborhood. I went to high school with Eddie Kendricks nephews. There is still so much talent in Detroit until this very day. I love these stories!!

You're right. Mary Wells' stardom has been forgotten. She was the biggest selling Black female artist in America - in and outside of Motown- during the early 1960s. Period.
Why do you say that?! Eventhough Motown did a lot of artists dirty..Mary was 17 when signed like most of them babies. Mary was the 1st to ever sue Motown and won but @ the cost of her relevancy...🤷🏾♀️Berry begged Mary to renegotiate her contract and give her a lil stake In the company but Mary wanted to leave@ the advice of then husband! And her career never reached the heights again she had with Motown! Why do you say that?! Eventhough Motown did a lot of artists dirty..Mary was 17 when signed like most of them babies. Mary was the 1st to ever sue Motown and won but @ the cost of her relevancy...🤷🏾♀️Berry begged Mary to renegotiate her contract and give her a lil stake In the company but Mary wanted to leave@ the advice of then husband! And her career never reached the heights again she had with Motown!
