Wood Turning Easy High Gloss Sprayed Lacquer Finish

- My easy method of spraying lacquer on a wood turning.
This video is how I apply a high gloss sprayed lacquer finish on the lathe.
Applying lacquer on the lathe is a great way to get a nice finish.
I was asked how I do it so it was easier to show in a video.
I use spray lacquer from a can. I have used an airbrush as well as an HVLP Gun
A hardwood will give you a much glossier finish because of the much tighter grain. Softer woods will work but do require more finish to be applied.
I use cloth to apply the sanding sealer and the abrasive and polishing paste. Using cloth on a wood lathe is not recommended.
Only use what you feel is safe for you.
I enjoy using all types of finish and using shellac on an upcoming video right now.

I just tried a new trick that was mentioned to me. When wet and dry sanding add a little soap to the water. It sure seemed like it helped get the cutting action faster. I will work on that a bit more.

Papa, this is an excellent video on how to use lacquer. The key to your lacquer finish is that you put down several coats b4 you even thought about touching the piece with Scotch Bright.
The only advice I can give is to medium wet your piece with lacquer thinner b4 spraying the lacquer. This step will help the 1st several coats to lay down perfectly flat! GREAT VIDEO!!!!!

I have not heard of wetting it down with thinner sounds like an interesting idea. So no sanding sealer I assume and I am guessing you do it while the thinner is still wet.
I am planning a mid week video using this piece of Wood.
I will be finishing that side with shellac.

Watching your methods of wet sanding reminded me of the process we used on cars like Rolls Royce, Bentley & all high value vehicles during the paint refinishing process to achieve the perfect finish Gary. One tip that I have mentioned to several people wanting to emulate it is to smear some good old fashioned, unscented bar soap onto the wet/dry paper. It reduces clogging of the paper & also the risk of scratching the finish. Helps keep your hands clean also.

So after using the soap do you end up spraying more on? Or do you just wash it all down if you need more coats?

Thanks for the reply Gary. Use the soap & water method between the coats of laquer once you go above 500/600 wet or dry paper. With regards to vehicle refinishing, I go through to 1200 wet/dry with the soap. It’s up to the individual if you want to go higher. I hope this makes sense.
e.g., Medium Scotchpad, Fine S/Pad, 500/600 w/dry, 800 w/dry, 1200 w/dry. Wash the surface clean between each wet sand & after the final wet sand wash with clean water, then dry surface thoroughly. Polish, wax.

So I remember in shop class in high school we had a paint room. Wow were those fumes strong.
And we used Deft....I dont think it was the fumes but I know you came out of that room pretty mellow...lol
I have used other brands of spray but I buy the Deft by the gallon. And I have thinned it down an sprayed it. But cleaning equipment is not my favorite thing.
This coming week I use Shellac...another favorite finish.

ThePapa1947 yes Gary I remember those feelings😀 . Yes, we had a spray room in school. I was really good friends with my shop teachers son. My wood shop teacher is still alive at 98 years young. And always ask his son “what did Bruce make this week” I have a lot of good stories with him, I always considered him one of my mentors!!

Varnishing seems like a simple matter, but there is a long procedure of this stage and this is the main polishing, and you succeeded Gary .. Varnish he gives the product its color and highlights all the beauty. Thank you .. I love your products they are very nice

At least I stopped short of the 15 coats I put on my last Redwood bowl turning.

A wonderful finish Gary ! I use cloth a lot more than I did as it does give better results , I just make sure I do not have any wrapped around my fingers and be a bit more aware of what I'm doing. When I get the time I want to make some BAP :)

turned out beautiful papa . i work with lacquer all the time . its a tough finish it dont really like to be messed with at all lol . but you did what i would have done . and it looked great . your the man papa .

@@ThePapa1947 i like it to gary i do think there are easier finishes but i think lacquer is the prettiest and it is easy to use . you just got to be willing to give it the time it needs to dry lol . i have issues with waiting im pretty impatient . what i like about it the most is that the next coat will bond right into the first . so if you do make a mistake a little sanding and another coat and your all good again . it really is a wonderful finish .
You are right about that dark.
Try some wipe on poly for easy to use and a great finish. I really like that finish as well.
I also really love shellac. It works great on more natural turned pieces.
It all has it's place and I recently purchased a can of a finish not used that much anymore. But many years ago I used it on an Oak roll top desk I made.
So it is about time I try it on a turning.
Stayed tuned to see what it is.

@@ThePapa1947 gary buddy i enjoy watching you no need to hook me lol. i will be looking forward to seeing the finish your talking about . i have used poly and i can get that glass finish i like from it but to be honest there is just something that lacquer gives that i like . it is a fine and easy finish once you learn how to use it . i also use shellac mostly in ob shine juice .but again i love that glass look . im sure i will be amazed with what you bring to the table brother . i like watching the people who you know have years of experience and you just can tell who they are . there work speaks for them and they make it look so easy . so no worries gary im not going anywhere unless im told to lol . see ya soon buddy .
Hi Gary...to be honest I am not a big fan of the laquer finishes but your method leaves a more subtle finish like a really good high polished waxed finish...10 coats of laquer is a lot of work but that's going to protect the piece for a long time so I'm sure it's well worth the extra effort...great finish...great video...All the best.....Andy

Certainly lots of finishes to choose from and I like most all of them. I seem to favor lacquer but maybe because that is what I started with years ago.

@@viktorrietveld it should work just fine. It can be applied to about any other finish. So you would need to put your black on first and then apply this. Always test on a scrap piece first. But as long as the black is sanded with very fine sandpaper before hand I see no issues.

Thank you Gord I have always been hooked on lacquer but there are so many great finishes now I like to try them all. I plan on using a new to me finish soon.

Interesting video, Gary. I've never used lacquer on a project. I usually use satin polyurethane. I may take some of your ideas and try them on flat wood. It's good to see a midweek video instead of one jammed in with all the other Friday releases. Take care.

I'm surprised you didn't offer the tip of warming up the lacquer before spraying. It flows much better.
That is a good tip if used on the proper lacquer. Plus you do not want to spray the warmed lacquer on a cold project. Best if they are close to the same temperature.
Excellent video, very thorough and easily to understand, plan on using this idea in my next wood turning project.

The only reason I would have let it set all day is if it was late in the day. Other wise sanding sealer will dry very fast..

Looks amazing but you need one solid flow coat for the last coat. Unless you’re going to wet sand the clear up to 2000 grit and polishing it, if you want little orange peel, you need to go heavier on the last coat

Does the shine that the abrasive and polishing paste leave last or will it wear off with touch/handling of the item? Thanks for the video, very informative.
I most always use the abrasive paste of another finish such as lacquer or poly. In that case the shine stays. If you were to use the paste as the main finish I suspect it might need to be waxed if handled a lot.

Hey Gary! I’m currently working on a costume that requires color stained wooden beads, at a high gloss finish. At what step would you apply the color? Pre or post sanding? Will the clear coat keep the color from fading or rubbing off on the white clothing underneath?
I would stain the wood after the sanding and if it raises the grain I would use some fine scotch brite to make it smooth again. The lacquer should seal it just fine if you use multiple coats. Three should be more than enough.

would using 0000 steel wool instead of scotchbrite be acceptable? I also do a lot of pepper grinders and spray the lacquer (several light coats) with item turning to get even application.
Hi Doug,
Yes 0000 steel wool does a fine job. I have lots of that as well. Just be careful on small diameter pieces that it does not get wrapped around the turning. It can hook itself together and really grab. I did that once on an aluminum turning.
I will use it on my wood turnings though.

Looks great but l didn't understand the reasoning for the abrasive was only to come back to 500 grit sandpaper???
The last process was to bring the shine back after the 500 grit. The 500 grit was to level out the finish after wiping or spaying it on. It does at that little bit extra.

Sure you can use 0000 steel wool and I have done that for years. I think it works as good and use both. On a turning with edges that might catch I would not use the steel wool though.

Do you ever use Yorkshire grit before lacquering?
No I never have. Not really sure what the advantage would be.
Curious of your thoughts on it.
The issue I see is that the wax/polish is not a long term finish. After a couple of years, the wax will evaporate and leave a possible dull finish. Do you have any evidence that after a couple of years or more that the wax/polish finish holds up? Thanks for the video, much appreciated.
I have no evidence at all that the wax finish will last and I do not think it will and that is why I very seldom use it as a finish. Most of everything I do I finish with either lacquer, poly or shellac. I then use the abrasive paste to buff it to a better shine.
I showed the wax only because a lot of people like to use it. I will just use the abrasive paste and polish for something where a person is very concerned about it being food safe. As a matter of fact I am working on a piece like that right now.
