Wow. Didn’t realise you could get such a shiny finish with Danish Oil. I’ve only been doing a mat finish. Time to try out your way of getting that great glossy finish. Thanks for showing us all.
Thank you very much, to be honest i did see another turner do it 😀but that is how we learn 😀😀 Stay safe and have a great day, and thanks for the comment 😀😀😀
Nice turning. If I understand you right, you apply danish oil and dry it with a heat gun, Then you sand it, apply more oil, dry it and repeat for about 8 times. Thanks for sharing.
I use the heat gun to speed up the drying yes, but that is only so I can apply 2 -3 coats at the time, and stop the lathe and dont get drips below , you still need to let it harden 24 + horeurs before sanding and applying the next 1 to 3 coats .. .. thank you for watching my videos .. stay safe 😀😀

That's a great, great big bowl, lol. It's a pleasure watching you turn, and to see someone using a Bowl Gouge correctly, I see so many using the Bowl Gouge like it's a scrapper, and cutting with the flute facing upwards, I cringe expecting them to get a bad catch. Thanks for sharing your process.

Hi Thanks for the tip wit the Shellac, you are right the Danish oil is not food safe even though it is shellac based. I have looked for shellac in Denmark in premixed but it is crazy expensive and i never came around to get the flakes you can mix you self. it could be fun to meet a fellow woodturner i live in Tappernøje on Zealand near Næstved.. @@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I've mixed my own shellac for many years now. It is very easy, you have a choice of do many shellac variations and complete control. I recommend using regular grain alcohol (not denatured) because the mixed shellac is more stable, it smells better, and is food safe. Thinned shellac makes a good sanding sealer and the shellac can also be mixed with a drying oil such as Walnut oil (food safe) for a friction polish. Food safe cured or uncured, smells great, dries very fast and any finish can be put on top of it.
Nice job! May I suggest that you could use a duffle bag or something of that sort filled with sand and fasten hanging under the base with a tie down strap to make the lathe heavier? Wet the sand when you need additional weight. It's a trick often used by photographers on their tripods windy days outdoors.
Thanks for the tips! i will try that 😀😀 i did buy some stuff to try and attach to the legs and make it heavier, just haven't got around to it yet 😀 but the sand back is a good idea.. thank you very much for watching .. stay safe and have a great day .. 😀😀
Hi Bonnie, thank you for watching .. Some people say Danish oil is food safe when it is harden .. but Danish oil used like this, sit on the surface, and there is a possibility that it will chip off so you get it in you food, I know Hampshire sheen Danish Oil is declared toy and food safe, but that is pre-thinned so I dont think you will get the glass like result with it .. but I havnet tried .. So i cant telle you 100 % that it is or not .. Have a great day and stay safe 😀😀
Thanks for the comment .. I'm sure you can it just take patience, don't rush the layers or it will keep being sticky it need to harden .. good luck .. have a great day and stay safe 😀😀
Sounds great! just remember to let it harden so it wont end up gui, it is almost possible to get off again with out turning it again 😀 dont ask how i know 😂 thanks for watching my videos.. stay safe and have a great day 😀😀😀
It need to be completly cured, so atleast 24 to 48 houres, depending ofthe temp .. just bes sure it is har before sanding it thanks for watching and stay safe ..
Ok, I have to try that some time .. only done wet sanding one time before .. Thank you for watching and the comment I really appreciate it .. Have a great day and stay safe 😀
Start with 220 and raise the grain with a water alcohol mix. Get it smooth and go to 320 then 400. Pour on the oil and block sand with 600. It’ll take a few passes but the “dust”;turns into grain filler. Let it dry up between oil coats but repeat until you’re satisfied with the surface. I always finish up with wax and may use 4/0 steel wool to do the waxing. I’m brand new to turning but I’ve made lots of flat stuff from hardwoods.
Just some feedback. I'm doing this on some drums I'm building and I've found that I can get a really decent gloss after only 3 coats. It would probably be a bit better after four coats but I'm happy with the way it is now. Second, make sure the Danish oil is really dry before sanding between coats otherwise it'll gum up your sandpaper in about 2 seconds.
Hi I’ve only just discovered your channel for some reason when it was flagged up on TH-cam as one I might like. Already subscribe to other woodturners such as Andy Philip, Mike Waldt, R Humphrey, M Saban-Smith, Pierre Lusier, PF woodturning, Martin Woodhead etc and I’m definitely adding yours. This included some lovely tuition and advice and I never knew you could get such an amazing finish with Danish Oil - when I use it the pieces have a definite matt to eggshell finish. So thanks for the video and the very best of luck and success in all that you do.
Thanks you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it, and I am very happy that you find my channel and turnings interesting, that makes it all worth doing, and make me keep going.. 😀 Thanks for watching and for the sub, and have a great day and stay safe // Brandstrup 😀😀😀
I would not have believed you could get such a nice glossy finish with just Danish oil. What is the purpose of the heat gun? Does it make the oil dry faster? Did you use it after each coat?
Hi Rick, yes the heat gun hardens the surface so I can give it 2 to 3 coats at the time, I have tryed it on another piece without the heat gun after the one i filmed, and you get a pettey result with 1 coat and let it harden fully, and the one more and so on, I did 6 coats and got a better result.. and the chance you take with the heat gun is that sometimes the danish oil get sticki and wont harden, and when that happens there is no way back, you have to put a gauge on it and start over .. the trick of this is patience .. let it harden before going on .. thank you very much for watching and for the comment .. stay safe and have a great day ..
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP Sure, My favorite way is to put 1 coat of sanding sealer on, sand lightly, 2 more coats, using steel wool and a scotch Brite pad on each, then polish with sanding paste and polish. Comes out like a mirror. Sometimes I use a poly wipe, 3 or 4 coats, same as above. sometimes I use a spray, like lacquer or shellac. Take care, Larry
Hi Daniel, thank you very much for watching I really apprciate it, the planner is the cheapest hans planer I was able to find, as I remember it was 35 $ it dont Even have a name 😁 but it works to trim some rough egde or take down some bark to fit the spuredrive.. Stay safe and have a great day 😁😁😁
Very nice! How long does the shine lasts? and, after the 1 session of three coating one after another, how long do you wait to apply another session of coating? I have the same lathe, very happy with it. Best regards from Koper Slovenia
Is Danish oil drying exothermic or endothermic? I didn't understand the comment about the rags being able to spontaneously combust but the video showing you using a heat gun...
Hi Thomaz, a part of the Danish oil is Lindseed oil and that is exothermic, that is why i always keep the paper towels in a jar after using it.. they hav the possibility to self ignite even though the manufacture dont write it can I just do it a role to not forget with other oils and the i go out at burn it when the jar is full .... the reason i use the heatgun is to start the harden process faster .. as I find it harden the surface a little and then dont get oil drops running ..
I have attempted this process and so far I am unimpressed. I saved your video and have referred to it often but the results so far are disappointing. I have 10 coats on one piece and seven on another. Even after sitting for days they are still tacky. And the third coat in each set of three always seems to wrinkle and get rough. Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?
Ok ,, are you sure the coats is fully cured before ading the nex 3 coats, and the amount you have to put on is to the limit for it to start dripping.. it did take me some tryes before i got my first good result .. I hope you manage to get it to work .. thanks for watching, Stay safe :-)
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I fought with this for about a month. I gave up and sanded it down to bare wood again. Maybe me, maybe hardware store grade oil, maybe just a bad idea.
Hi and thank you very much for watching .. it is a 1 and a half to 2 week process the oil need to harden 100 % before applaying the next leayers .. stay safe and have a great day :-)
Hej. Jeg beundre dit drejearbejde og din teknik. Jeg er selv ivrig fordrejer og følger en del andre dygtige trædrejere på YT. Fortsæt med samme iver. Hans Bindslev Aalborg
Hi James, I think that depend of who you asking, I did do it on a leather wheel in the beginning, but got lazy and stop doing it and found that the result on the cut was the same, I think when you make the first cut the wood more or less do the job for you in the first cut, but that is just my opinion.. I do use a diamond plate grit 400 but that is mostly for negative rake scraper and normal scrapers, with the grinding systems no mater witch you have, it is so fast to sharpen a gouge that I normally just take it to the grinder instead of using the diamond plate.. I did recently change sharpening system from the Tormek to the ProEdge and I have the same experience with that one. I hope that answered you question, otherwise feel free to write again, Stay safe and have a great day 😀😀
For wood turning, especially with high speed steel (HSS) tools, there's not a lot of point in honing - the very sharp tip of the tool that honing would give will be stripped off by the volume of wood flowing past it in just a few revolutions. HSS will still hold a good enough sharp edge for a long while, which is of course why we use it! Carvers do hone their tools, which are normally high carbon steel not HSS, but they only pass the edge through a few inches of timber in the same timescale...
Mine is smooth, if it get sticky the coats was apalyed before it harden fully, an you need to sand an clean in between, an it did tak me some tryes to get it to work 100 % 😁 the Harding take longer tvan the can say if you use rostine.. Thank you for watching.. Have a great day, and stay safe.. 😁😁
you need at least 24 hours, it is very important that it is completely dry and hard befor applying the next coat, good lock with it hope it work out, thanks for watching .. stay safe and have a great day . 😀😀
Nice work, and thank you for your Danish oil finishing technique. With the mould/fungus in the wood I hope you were wearing a suitable mask. Bill Pentz has a great website about the hazards of wood dust, and after reading his info & research, I’m not sure it is wise to have your children with you in the workshop, even once you have stopped work without fully venting the shop.
Hi, Thanks for watching .. and for the comment .. I always use a fullface trend Airshield.. and I have dust collection x 2 and room airfilters so we are good, thank you for the heads up though .. and my kids ar normally not in the shop when I turning, I made a Room just for the lathe to combat the dust :-) again thank you very much for watching .. stay safe and have a great day 😀😀😀
I don't have a shelf under my lathe, it only has 4 legs, I've been thinking about how to mount a shelf to give it a little more stability, i need to figure out how to do it.. thanks you for the comment have a great day and stay safe :-)
So all of the Danish oil instructions I have seen insist on the apply / let soak 10-15 min / wipe off / let harden method. You don’t wipe off the finish at all, so it looks like to me you are putting most of your attention toward controlling the curing process, so the shiny look we see BEFORE we wipe off the finish will remain. This is all new thinking but i like it.
Hi Leo, He he Yup Danish.. It is not to bad, it just take a little time, it take around 8 hours to fully harden when applying 3 layers at the time, plenty of time to make other projects in between, or just do it at the last thing you do before the night then it is ready next morning .. Thanks for the comment and have a great day and stay safe 😀😀

Thinned shellac makes a good sanding sealer and the shellac can also be mixed with a drying oil such as Walnut oil (food safe) for a friction
polish. Food safe cured or uncured, smells great, dries very fast and any finish can be put on top of it.
@boooshes I have to look in to that .. thank you very much for sharing .. 😀😀Stay safe
Beautiful results
Thank you, and thank tou very much for watching .. stay safe and have a great day 😀
Really cool!! Is the danish oil ok for food use once its dry?
Hi Bonnie, thank you for watching .. Some people say Danish oil is food safe when it is harden .. but Danish oil used like this, sit on the surface, and there is a possibility that it will chip off so you get it in you food, I know Hampshire sheen Danish Oil is declared toy and food safe, but that is pre-thinned so I dont think you will get the glass like result with it .. but I havnet tried .. So i cant telle you 100 % that it is or not .. Have a great day and stay safe 😀😀
thank you for the oil tips. i will use it on a guitar
you are very welcome, just remember to be patience and let it harden each time you apply the oil .. Stay safe and have a great day
That is a really good tip about the danish oil, I will have to start an experiment to see if I can replicate your skill.
Thanks for the comment .. I'm sure you can it just take patience, don't rush the layers or it will keep being sticky it need to harden .. good luck .. have a great day and stay safe 😀😀
Beautiful piece. I use Danish oil as finish of choice and will look forward to trying you technique.
Sounds great! just remember to let it harden so it wont end up gui, it is almost possible to get off again with out turning it again 😀 dont ask how i know 😂 thanks for watching my videos.. stay safe and have a great day 😀😀😀

Mange tak. og tak fordi du ser med .. pas på dig selv og god jul :-)
very nice ... how long to harden between each set of 3 coats, please?
It need to be completly cured, so atleast 24 to 48 houres, depending ofthe temp .. just bes sure it is har before sanding it
thanks for watching and stay safe ..
Excellent and lovely finish thank you ✊✊✊✊✊✊
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the comment, glade you liked it have a great day 😀😀
I’ve always wet sanded the Danish oil. It leaves a lustrous finish that’s not glossy. Also fills the grain nicely. I like the piece you’ve done.
Ok, I have to try that some time .. only done wet sanding one time before .. Thank you for watching and the comment I really appreciate it .. Have a great day and stay safe 😀
Hi Paul, can you tell us more about this? What kind of sandpaper you use and what grits you go through?
Start with 220 and raise the grain with a water alcohol mix. Get it smooth and go to 320 then 400. Pour on the oil and block sand with 600. It’ll take a few passes but the “dust”;turns into grain filler. Let it dry up between oil coats but repeat until you’re satisfied with the surface. I always finish up with wax and may use 4/0 steel wool to do the waxing. I’m brand new to turning but I’ve made lots of flat stuff from hardwoods.
YES!!! LOVE VIDEO!!!!
Thank you very much 😀 and thank you for watching .. stay safe and have a great day .. 😀
Beautiful!
Thanks 😁😁 and thank you for watching.. Stay safe and have a great day 😁😁
Just some feedback.
Thanks for watching, stay safe :-)
Happy to have found your channel, I enjoy your commentary, 🍻
Thank you very much for watching my videos, I normally try to put out atleast one a week.. Somtimes more. Have a great weekend and stay safe 😁😁
Impressive!
Thanks :-) and thank you for watching .. have a great daty and stay safe .. :-)
Nice!
Thanks .. Stay safe :-)
Beautiful finish, but there are several other ways to achieve the same without near the work. Take care, Larry
Hi Larry, thanks for the coment .. can you plz share some of the other ?? have a great day :-)
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP Sure, My favorite way is to put 1 coat of sanding sealer on, sand lightly, 2 more coats, using steel wool and a scotch Brite pad on each, then polish with sanding paste and polish. Comes out like a mirror. Sometimes I use a poly wipe, 3 or 4 coats, same as above.
sometimes I use a spray, like lacquer or shellac. Take care, Larry
I have to try that. Thanks for sharing 😀
Fantastic achievement with the small wobbly lathe, hope the wife relents and you can get a bigger one 🤞
I hope so too 😀😀 Thanks for watching .. stay safe and have a great day . 😀😀
Make her a deal , every dollar she spends on personal care products you can put 1 to your lathe
Really cool video thanks 🎸 what planer did you use at the beginning please?
Hi Daniel, thank you very much for watching I really apprciate it, the planner is the cheapest hans planer I was able to find, as I remember it was 35 $ it dont Even have a name 😁 but it works to trim some rough egde or take down some bark to fit the spuredrive.. Stay safe and have a great day 😁😁😁
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP thanks for the reply. May the Lord bless and keep you brother
@Daniel Adams thanks, you too
Great job 💪🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Sub'd. That looks AMAZING
Thank you very much and thank you for watching .. Have a great day and stay safe :-)
Very nice! How long does the shine lasts? and, after the 1 session of three coating one after another, how long do you wait to apply another session of coating? I have the same lathe, very happy with it.
Best regards from Koper Slovenia
Beautiful 😍
Thank you very much .. And thank you for watching ..😀 Happy new year .. and stay safe .. 😀😀
Nice! Can you tell me the difference between Danish oil and Scandinavian oil? Hope to see more of your projects 🙂
First thanks for watching :-) I have never used the Scandinavian oil and dont know how the oil will act .. have a great day and stay safe :-)
Lovely live-edge bowl! 10 coats of oil makes the finishing process quite lengthy. Are you finishing in a few days? Or does this take weeks?
Hi and thank you very much for watching .. it is a 1 and a half to 2 week process the oil need to harden 100 % before applaying the next leayers .. stay safe and have a great day :-)
Hej.

Are woodturning gouges used directly after grinding or do they need to be honed on an oilstone after grinding?
Carvers do hone their tools, which are normally high carbon steel not HSS, but they only pass the edge through a few inches of timber in the same timescale...
that's a lovely finish, how durable is it and how does it feel to the touch, when I've used similar techniques it's felt plasticy
What do you use to clean your brush?
I dont :-) or rater I havent found anything that can clean it after. so i buy realy cheap brush and burn the oiel off after to avoid self ignigtion..
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP thank you for your reply.... how long does it take for that much Danish oil to fully cure?
@@bigkahuna8338 2 to 3 dayes in around 20 C
Never knew Danish Oil could get so shiny. How long does it need to dry between the sets of three coats? Gonna give it a try. Subscribed. Thanks.
you need at least 24 hours, it is very important that it is completely dry and hard befor applying the next coat, good lock with it hope it work out, thanks for watching .. stay safe and have a great day .
I always use a fullface trend Airshield.. and I have dust collection x 2 and room airfilters so we are good, thank you for the heads up though .. and my kids ar normally not in the shop when I turning, I made a Room just for the lathe to combat the dust :-) again thank you very much for watching .. stay safe and have a great day 😀😀😀
What brand of danish oil?
I normaly use hampshire sheen
Wait your from Denmark? Isn't it just called oil for you then?
Ha ha ha :-) it is Danish oil from the UK LOL .. thanks for watching have a great day and stay safe :-)
If your lathe has a shelf load it with turning blanks or bags of sand
I don't have a shelf under my lathe, it only has 4 legs, I've been thinking about how to mount a shelf to give it a little more stability, i need to figure out how to do it.. thanks you for the comment have a great day and stay safe :-)
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP Will do, you and the family stay safe and keep well 👍👍
So all of the Danish oil instructions I have seen insist on the apply / let soak 10-15 min / wipe off / let harden method. You don’t wipe off the finish at all, so it looks like to me you are putting most of your attention toward controlling the curing process, so the shiny look we see BEFORE we wipe off the finish will remain. This is all new thinking but i like it.
That is correct if you wipe you cant get the shine.. thanks for watching. have a nice day.
Danish Oil!? Then you must be an expert on the matter!
The result is great but it appears to be an elaborate process. 10 coats, wow!
@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I do the same but I have not tried several coats at the same time, I will try that also.
👍🏼
