Why the negative comments, guys helping out giving free advice good on you dude
It's the kind of advice that can fuck your car long term. "Performance" air filters get their performance in one of two ways. Either they have MUCH more area (which this one clearly does not), or they do a hell of a lot less filtering.
Operating on the assumption that if one is being cheap about this, one intends to keep the car until it's a rusty pile of scrap, doing this is quite counterproductive. Allowing more dust in your engine will wear out your piston-cylinder sealing components (piston rings, texture of bore lining, probably valve seats too, for good measure) a lot quicker, which will make your car an oil burner a lot quicker.
The short term gains are nice, but long term it's just not worth it. Not unless you plan on getting rid of the car next year.
But did you see how dirty his second vehicles filter was? When you remove the bottoms it sucks in all the dust meaning you have to replace your air filter more often
Mark Davies You are right for sure!!!!
@@233kostabut that’s what a cold air intake literally does the same thing there is no box there is heat sheilds that’s dumb
@@trippiebear848 Agreed. Sure, he's allowing more air access to the surface of the filter, but its air from inside the engine bay. Is a "hot air intake" really going to help over the stock version?
Bro your energy is insane, and your information is extremely valuable. Hidden gem of TH-cam!
Car manufacturers spend millions on research and development when they could’ve just hired this guy.

Volkswagen group , old 1.4 16v 55kw petrol.(Vw golf, seat leon,ibiza.. skoda octavia..)
Intake is hot from underhood in models without AC (like vw group 1.6 8v 55kw petrol)
Models with AC have cold intake from difusor in the mask.
Too same cars AC/ non AC.
They need, want save every one €$¥£ ..if they can.

Some of the comments were annoyed by this guy, I love the energy, and enthusiasm, and he had some great tips to improve performance, and not break your wallet. Great video!
People bitching about it being annoying, but hey man, I love the energy! Nothing wrong with being informative AND entertaining! Also, great topic...replace air filter more often? Sure...but worth it in my opinion! ...and hell, grab a K&N one like you said, and just clean it! I love my 2.5l mk6 Jetta, but the intake is ridiculous! ...have to see if I can do anything about that!
made a new Free intake video on my Mad Boosting you tube channel. I believe this on is better, it is specifically for Ford modular 4.6 and 5.4 engines in the F150, F250, F350, Excursion, Expedition, some mustangs and other Fords that used this unique cone filter with very small intake hole (reverse trumpet like I call it)

Love the video! It’s sad how many people don’t know that the intake and exhaust are the biggest power and fuel thieves on a car. They are always my first mod!
Biggest power and fuel robber is fuel
Thanks alot for the advice.
I did this to my camry and my odyssey.
Wooooow both vehicles are now way more cooler sounding and the take off from stand still is waaaaay more torque .
Thank you for saving me about $700 and giving me free ponies under my foot.

I did the "bronco" thing at first

I loved this video. You are an entertaining guy and should do commercials. Thanks for the info about more air to engines. You are good at making your point.
As a veteran myself, I thank you for serving. Never forget.
hey man I like your motivation, the sky is the not the limit lol. a little ingenuity and a little know how, anything is possible. people don't realize it's a simple concept air mixes with fuel and is ignited which pushes a chunk of metal attached to a rod attached to a wheel creating a circular motion very simple. motivation determination and a goal in mind, can bring you wherever you want to go.
Much respect to you Traser579!!! I love DIY stuff and it makes you feel better in the end knowing that you did it yourself. Even if it doesn't work as would expect, at least you know you tried!!! Been there done that. Mostly positive results. Nothing in life is perfect!!! Kudos my man!!! ;)
DAV Represent! I had a chance to work alongside with the DAV in NYC for a Missing in America Project Service. They are a great organization! Good video! Thanks for posting!
project farm did extensive testing on filters... found K&N filter is basically for race cars, lets in too much dirt so...
synthetic oil can also help fuel economy check tire pressure often do make sure they manufacture spec the sticker is mostly by the door jam keeping the RPMs low
Synthetic oil gives you a marginal increase in power, but unfortunately the same fuel economy.
I wanted to get an AEM intake kit for my FRS, but the price was just that $300. So I ended up getting an Air-Aid for half that. I was looking for some stuff for my 5.0 Explorer, I checked to see what they had for it. They had 1 K&N drop-in filter. It was $50, still expensive, but still 1/3 the price of what I paid for an air-box intake kit. When I took it for a test drive, it went from very sluggish to running like it was new. I don't regret that decision. Plus all are cleanable and reusable for the next 100k miles.
Lol that would have happened with any new air filter. K&N filters gets you a few hp but terrible particle filtering
He is my spirit animal.
+Matt Joines LOL, you actually just made me cry laughing hahaha
I just finished making a 3 1/2 inch hole in my trucks 2006 lower cold air intake box. After 15 years of owning the truck I noticed a huge gain in performance across all power bands, after cutting the 3 1/2 hole. I also made an extra hole my 2021 car. I noticed a huge gain in power. What you are saying is true! Free modifications in any existing lower cold air intake will work for for any car to gain power. I completely agree with your "small hammer" approach to recapture power that is kept from our cars! Modify what exists or spend a little bit of money to recapture what should be ours.
I love your attitude!

I cut the cats off of my 95 F150 with the 302 n code, and installed dual exhaust, with low restriction mufflers, I tell you, that engine was very happy. 23 MPG on 33 12.5 r 15 tires, beautiful sound too.
lmao
NAH. You didn't get 23 MPG -- Those big-ass tires CHANGED your overall gear ratio.
Almost always, bigger tires will LOWER your MPGs.
Big-ass tires WILL DECEASE acceleration and INCREASE your stopping distance.
Cutting off the cats makes your rig just another air pollution source -- it's illegal -- and stupid.
Removing the cats on a obs ford increases HP quite a bit, like 15 to 20 HP along with a aftermarket muffler, and the proof in that is because the stock e7te cylinder heads are very weak on the exhaust side and don't flow well, even the stock manifolds are crap, put some headers on cut the cats out and a nice muffler put on and you can gain 30 HP
@@dawsonjorgensen3521 The mods you recommend are expensive (headers), illegal (cat removal), and stupid (because they're expensive AND illegal).
By-the-way -- the "honeycomb" cats used by Ford will flow as much air as a straight pipe. Ford cat removal is double-stupid !!
@@SlikLizrd picked up a set of stainless header for 180$ they work great and have the hookups for EGR, lol and btw the cats were pretty restrictive on the older Ford's, especially after decades of aging they like to plug up because of them running rich, had cut mine out and made a decent amount of power, 87 to 96 obs ford
My, Taurus has a K and N filter. It gets 2.5 mpg more than a paper filter. Before the air box there is a air horn that sucks cool dense air threw it from the factory. I have never taken the inner liner of the fender off to see if it restricts the flow. Have any of you car nuts seen this air horn there. Shawn
This guy makes a lot of sense. My buddy had a Subaru Legacy with the tiny 2.2 motor in it. We never really figured it out, but that thing when accelerating used to actually whistle. Really really. My guess is it may have had some unseen hole in the underside of the air box. Whatever it was, it whistled and had extra 'boost'. I like this guy's video, and his personality. Educational and entertaining. I am gonna mess around with my stock 2001 Pontiac Grand Am's air intake, with factoring in New England rainfall amounts. Maybe just some 1/16ths holes drilled into lower side of air box !!
Great Video! Simple = power, efficiency, and on the cheap. Great ideas, KEEP THEM COMING.

Bro did u hear that intake!!! That's what I'm talking about. I watch this video once a year to remind me to budget boost my car everything I change my vehicle.
"Superb performance" that was hilarious :')
I mean it's a good idea in theory, but then you are allowing all the heat that is around the engine to go into the engine rather than the cooler air that it gets from outside, typically through the finder wall. The temperature differences inside the engine bay and outside are pretty large once the engine is at normal operating temperatures. And hotter air means its less dense therefore you really aren't getting as much air in the cylinder as you think. If you were to do this and add an intercooler it would be much more beneficial, you don't need more air, you need colder, more dense air. This allows more fuel to be injected resulting in more power.
Colton Voelkel yep..just use a better filter and modify intake tube size
U forget the air gets heated anyway from the eng temp in the eng bay
ahh another internet armchair engineer. You forgot one thing the fucking vehicle is MOVING.
That air filter is going to get clogged so fast the way he is doing it.

Hey booster boy, I am an auto mechanic since '95 professionally. I have tinkered with trying to get more horsepower from a car motor without doing any tinkering on the motor,AND NOW, I have found out how. Will figure out how to protect from up-splash from puddles!
I was an Aviation mechanic from 1989 to 2013. I work on cars as a hobby. I do apply some of which I have learned from aviation to auto performance. I also do many things outside of the box that so many have criticized which does not bother me because they can choose their own way. I am just showing what works for me and if someone likes it good, if not, they are free to do what they want to their own automobile.
24:00 With the Ford products, the place under the air box is a plastic extension of the inner fender for the front wheel. Once you cut out the bottom of the airbox, you can drill a bunch of holes in the plastic underneath the newly exposed air filter and get cold air intake from the bottom of the car. It is far enough in front of the front wheel to avoid splashes and drilling holes prevents stuff from getting up there but provides drainage if any water gets in there. Matt is ingenenile.
Dude, you are entertaining as hell!

It's amazing those hot air intakes still sell. Have one on an 02 Dakota 4.7. Avg IAT 143-145°, stock box was 113-118°. This was from a full k&n kit.. People think those baffles are "robbing power" just like EVAP/EGR misunderstandings. The stock intakes are the MOST reliable and they were built to operate at max efficiency for that engine. Sometimes on pre 96 if the Throttle body is big and the intake chokes it then you may see a little something otherwise it doesn't matter take the whole thing off there's still a port that's behind it that's a precise size. Not too big. Not too small. Just call it for what it is, intake roar. That's all your gaining.. and on bigger v8's it actually sounds decent.. easiest way to try is to just pull the lid go up n down the street. You like the roar drill the box/cut it open doesn't matter.
Instant abonnement.Dude we are really like the same. Have my first real car now a civic ej9 and cut two holes into the resonator box and connected 2 tubes to it to let the motor breathe more and generate more sound. Also with fresh k&n air filter. Prices on new intakes are hilarious. And here in germany i have to go to the so called "TÜV" everytime i install a new part on my car to let them test it for 75EUR. This money sucking garbage.. I can do itmyself ... Greets man, youre doing a good job!

I would suggest getting another air box at a parts yard, Pick-n-Pull, or its like before cutting into the factory air box on your car.
or don't, then if you ever want it back to stock, THEN you can grab a stock box at the parts yard.
Ty Hobbs That's exactly what I would do pick an old one, drill a couple big holes before cutting the entire bottom, K&N it and presto!

yeap this dude is right, i remove the airbox from my bike and install K&N filter direct on the carp and do ajust the jet needle for more fuel and turning for a bit more air, and i have bully lot of car and bike on the highway, my next project is to relocated the filter away from the engine bay to allow to suck in cold air, and this will further increase horse power
As crazy as this guy sounds, his ideas worked great on my crown Vic and Grand Marq. They sound like screaming banshees from 3500 to 5500. Cut the bottom off of the air box, it works great! Make sure to leave the mounting points so it can get mounted back up.
I made a new intake video on Mad Boosting which IMO is much better than my original Free intake mod video.
@@madboostingmadmatt48 You are my new Guru
the stock intakes are optimized to supply the perfect amount of air mixture is the truth they get the most HP out of your engine always... otherwise car makers would be hindering there marketing numbers... if a car is making 300 horsepower u better believe the stock air box is getting the most out of that.. putting on a aftermarket air filter isn't going to magically create 320 hp... also the intake hole may be small but its powerfully sucking in air... so it doesn't need to be a massive hole... on sports cars u can actually hear the hiss of the intake sucking in large amounts of air quickly.. don't need a big massive hole when its pulling in a ton of air rapidly creating the perfect mixture to optimize the engine to its maximum horsepower.. hope this helps.
Case in point go to a performance tuner such as Hennessey Performance or any of them, see how many of their 1000 hp+ have a stock air box on them....... That should clear up any and all confusion.
And how much of that 1000+ hp do you think is from the aftermarket air intake :) that should clear up 98% of the confusion cause at the most 2% gains is all your seeing from adding a slight amount of increase in air intake and tuning the car for it... air flow can only go so far... its your engine and modifications that matter 98% of the vehicles true horsepower
Every bit of an increase, is an increase. Why knowingly decrease when you can increase? Then again, most sheeple settle for mediocracy, follow the herd even if its to the gator pond.... That's ok.

I'd say it's worth trying on a stock plastic airbox, if it isn't to your liking, get a stock airbox at pick n pull. I liked the cone filter in the stock airbox trick, nice sound, nuttin' to see. Years ago a buddy had a 77 Chrysler New Yorker, 440 engine. Removed all the Lean Burn stuff, including the early ECU on side of the air cleaner. Left the opening on the aircleaner where the ECU had been. When you got on it and the huge secondaries on the Thermoquad opened up, it sounded like all hell was loose!
It is always good to have a spare airbox just in case you want to compare or change it for different climates.

You Gotta Love It. Sound,s like a lot fun .I did a cold air intake on an old Nissan Primera 2 litre Gt. Helped slightly in power. Fuel economy stayed about the same ,because i drive hard.I added a bit of marine 2 cycle oil to the gas tank 2 oz to 5 gallons of petrol. This improved gas mileage from 31 miles to the gallon to about 32.5 miles to the gallon.
My car's intake is actually engineered differently than other car's with the same engine, to give me more horsepower, so.. Yeah.
I also ran Four fuel economy tests. Two tests without the bottom of my intake, with the filter still intact, and Two tests with the bottom attached. I got 2 mpg less with the bottom off.
so you are saying it DIDNT work for you? just wondering b4 I do this
ShortManFilms Nope. All you'll get is a very tiny amount of better throttle response but it's not worth it. You'll also get a higher air intake temperature which is not good for efficiency.
If you really want more horsepower, get a real Cold air intake, with a performance exhaust and get the cars computer tuned because without tuning your car, you're not getting anything from the car except a cool "whoosh" sound. And it'll be a waste of money. If you want better fuel economy, get a handheld tuner in which it has an "Eco" mode to give you better fuel economy when you need it, but you can also change it to a performance mode where you'll get better performance. That's the best for fuel economy and also reduce your weight of the car if possible AND, make sure the cars tires are properly inflated. Also make sure your car gets a tune up if you haven't done so yet. Check fuel filter, spark plugs and stuff like that. Clean the fuel injectors as well and yup, you'll see a difference. Don't listen to what this guy says in the video. The car manufacturers know whats best for your car.
Lmao..very entertaining brother, keep it up.

Has anyone considered that cold air cannot be found inside the engine bay where the "EXPOSED" cone filter pulls air??????
Cooler air helps, but so does getting more air. Gotta find a balance. The goal is to get more airflow while keeping air intake temps close to ambient air temp or as cool as possible.
For more free horsepower, cut a hole in your hood and screw an old mailbox over your intake. (cut out the bottom first)
i respect this guy...today i ignore a huge plastic ending by small hole for intake air then i see my car goes easily and smooth ...thanks broo
Began using K&N products in all my vehicles in early 70,s. Never noticed any MPG increases. DID notice no more buying throw away paper filters and maybe a small amount of power increase on hill when in my Cummins engine. Gas engine ,just convenient and maybe psychological Minute improvement. Worth it ? To me yes.
4:51-5:00 the angriest truth I've ever heard xD lmfao
They are californicating everything no matter where you live on the west coast! Control freaks! LMAO!!
Engineers design the car to have a a certain oxygen to fuel ratio. Generally speaking cars run on: "clean", "idea", or "rich" oxygen-fuel ratios. Ideal is a complete combustion of fuel and oxygen. Clean means there is left over oxygen after combustion, and rich means there is left over fuel. A rich ratio provides the most power with the least fuel economy while clean provides the most efficiency/mpg with reduced power.
The factory intakes are designed to filter air as much as possible while providing close to the idle ratio of oxygen. This is why they are closed in a box and restricted with an intake hose. Cutting it open adds more oxygen which makes it runs "cleaner". This may increase fuel economy but will mostly likely reduce power.
I don't recommend doing this to your car. Adding more oxygen doesn't always mean you will get more power. Given that most "modern" cars should be running close to ideal ratios, this mod will most likely reduce your horsepower.
pcm will compensate for additional air up to maximum injector ability. no real gains. half to two percent increase in hp.
pbsoccer the word you're looking for is lean.
Stochstoichiometric is what your looking for, 14.7 to 1, but the car companies use it for the best emissions, not power

Just ran across this video GREAT WORK It's nice to see that someone made a video of what I have been doing for years! Its all common scene when it comes to intake air flow! . Just did my 2013 Camaro 2SS ... Nice video! ... also enjoyed other videos of yours
Yep, thought I would share it since not too many people know about the old trick. I remember in the 70's, flipping the lid on the aircleaner to get the whole filter to breathe on the Camaro. Simple things making a difference.
Yup! It was disappointing that Chevy put a nice LS3 430hp motor in the car, did a decent job locating the factory air box and put a decent sized filter in it, HOWEVER the relatively small snorkel from the air box that pulled warm air from the engine compartment located behind the headlight WITH NO ACCESS TO ANY AIR MOVEMENT was a total joke! So I cut a nice size opening in the front of the stock air box and used some sheet metal to make a heat-shield so it now draws cooler air from the fender area! painted it flat black and it looks stock if you didn't know it was modified! The design accomplishes the exact same thing as the expensive CAI units people are installing / Better air flow & Cooler Air

i have an 2010 vic, kinda want to do this. does anything get trapped up in the filter or does it get wet from snow and water (i have the k&n drop in filter already.)
also does it throw any engine codes?
and the intake advantage is more that the rubber in a stock intake absorbs heat, where upgrading to aluminium keeps air cooler
The only thing you gain is noise and more fine dust in the engine. Also, bringing hot air from the engine compartment will actually reduce available horsepower.
watch part 2 of free horsepower and torque, much better than part 1.
how often is he changing that cut filter with those dirt roads
Boy oh boy I like this guy, ahahahhaa
+Ashton Murch And I'm sure you two would make a lovely couple!
I was temped to change videos until i figured this guy kinda knows what hes saying. I've made more horsepower on my stock intake though than any aftermarket intake. I just changed to a different material (drop-in filter not a pod filter) & slightly modified where the outside air is sucked in.
made a new Free intake video on my Mad Boosting you tube channel. @ 4:28.... Inspector " ok ,ok ok....the bronco seems legit and stock.....WAIT!!!.....is that a k&n sticker on your airfilter cover??" ....busted!😂
