  • Cold air intakes are a cheap easy way to get in to modding your vehicle's engine. They are relatively inexpensive to obtain and require almost not skill or knowledge to instal.... And that is a bad thing! Because CAIs are cheap and easy, they have been misused and misunderstood for years!

I'm 19 and I have to admit, I love intakes and exhausts, but one thing I hound on my buddies is: leave the sensors! I hate it when someone modifies their exhaust and they delete the O2 sensors, and wonder why it runs like crap... Leave the sensors alone!!

Some of those same engineers put alternators under the intake manifold or the battery in weird places etc.

Your Dad "recreated" the first "homemade" cold air intake I ever saw on a street legal vehicle back in the 1980s. By the way, our immediate neighbor just gave his youngest son his bone stock Ford-Mazda Ranger "step side" pickup with just over 500,000 miles on the clock. Yes, you read correctly, just over 500,000 miles. The engine and transmission (five speed manual) were original to the truck with only the clutch and throw out bearing having been replaced at about 250,000 miles. Otherwise, our neighbor only did basic maintenance (oil, hoses, belts, tires, etc.) to the truck he purchased new from a local dealer. Enjoyed the video as usual! Keep the great entertaining and informative videos coming! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!!!

I have an 02 KJ 3.7. I replaced the resonator box with a tube from an 04+, got a K&N panel filter, and covered the air box and pipe in DEI reflective material. About as cold as its going to get.

I am from San Diego CA and recently recharge my spectre filter on my f150 since it was pretty much a dust ball and went to a long road trip, added to the fuel tank a redline injector cleaner and did the numbers for my mpgs and it really helped. I honestly don't know how I feel about cold air intakes but I do like them. I guess my suggestion is that if you don't have the money it's really not necessary.

8:40 Snoozel lol perfect! Mine in my 4.7 Dakota didnt route like yours did, it turned 80 degrees and pointed into the inner fender, so yeah, I 3D printed my own Snoozel to pull straight from the front grill, like yours, while still using the stock system and drop in K&N.

I picked up the dana 44- 2 weeks ago for my 2000 wj, its been down for 4 years (long story) at the u pull ( garys, my favorite ) . well there was a complete cold air system and I forgot to take it, im not that big into cold air system but it would have been nice to have it on hand. I did grab the led tail lights for 30 $ ( there on amazon for 140$ ). Cant wait to get my jeep back on the road.

Na man, almost all factory intakes are horrible, and a cold air intake is going to increase horsepower by 5 to 10%, if and only if you fabricate it in a way that fresh flowing air is getting to it. If not you're looking about the same hp maybe a little less. The difference is this fist off CAI are for the enthusiasts, automobile manufacturers rarely cater to the enthusiast. The stock intake system usually has a resonator and they're going for quiet. But the reason why you get a five to ten per-cent horsepower gain from a cold air intake is there's a suction and a vacuum, nothing more than a pipe with a filter, most stock intake systems are like a straw with holes in it. Its design like that on purpose in case you drive through a big puddle, water doesn't get sucked up into the engine. And some cars are extremely easy to install a good CIA because they have a lot of room under the hood, you just open up the front grill a little bit, and slap a cone filter right in the middle of it where the air is coming through, instant hp gain. But other vehicles the engine compartment is so cramped it's hard to get air flow without doing more severe alterations.

What people don't realize is how detrimental they can be. Best example besides sensors left put would be the big ugly bellows or chambers built into the sides of the tubing. Especially in older cars, taking them off can hurt performance. But it does sound good.

Where do I get one of these Snoozles for my 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L?
Mine was missing the day I got it!
Had no clue what it was even called. Been watching Jeep vid after intake video to find the part.
Literally the only youtube video that has even mentioned that hose from grill to filter housing!

Not all that long ago I put a cold air intake w/K&N filter onmy 03 Grand Limited and immediately lost 100 miles per tank of gas. I put the stock stuff back on and got back half of that loss. So needless to say... I will not fuck with the engineered system any more.

I like K&N or Iceman if I don’t build it myself. I make a plate like K&N uses to help keep engine heat from the filter. I also wrap the tubes with header wrap to help them from getting hot and creating an oven effect to the air going through the tube. But, with using a DRB to check the temperature readings in the intake. It shows a lower temperature than it was with the stock box. Oh, I also put pre-filters on my filters to help keep them cleaner longer. I’ll try to send you a picture of one of mine.

    • @kh83401
      @kh83401 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Are you talking about a plate sealing the top instead of the supposed hood being the top of the box. I’d like to see your top plate and insulation. Also, a pre-filter to the cone filter? Thanks

I don’t know if it’s considered a cold air intake, BUT…. On my first xj I ever had I took a nice 2” hole saw to the factory air box. I made Swiss cheese out of the air box and put in a k&n drop in filter and 16 year old Tyler thought it was the coolest thing this side of the Mississippi. Not realizing or even thinking that it’s pulling in hot air directly from the headers… young, dumb, and full of s**t haha

better to just connect a small hose to your inside ac cabin vents to suck REAL cold air into your engine air intake into the air filter box. For a TRUE COLD air intake system...atleast if your AC works and you have your ac on. just have to have a electronic cut off if you have the heat on in the vehicle.
