Lugner: "Man, this girl doesn't know how to do any combos. What a joke." Fern: "A-button-A-button-A-button-A-button-A-button-A-button-A-button-A-button"
The Frieren style of magic combat always reminded me of a Xyklon scene from Order of the Stick. "Hey, you know what really gets under my skin? Proverbially, of course? A century of wizards looking down their damn noses at me. Energy Drain! "I know people think I'm stupid. Because I'm not a wizard. Because I get bored easily. Because I have no interest in strategy or tactics or contingency planning. Energy Drain! But see, I've learned a lot over the years since I died. A lot more than I learned during my life. And now I see that planning doesn't matter. Strategy doesn't matter. Only two things matter: Force in as great a concentration as you can manage, and style. And in a pinch, style can slide. Energy Drain! In any battle, there's always a level of force against which no tactics can succeed. For example, all I need to do is keep smacking you with Energy Drains, and soon you won't be able to cast any of your fancy spells at all. Energy Drain! "Because yes, I am a sorcerer - and this magic is in my bones, not cribbed off of 'Magic for Dummies.' And I can keep casting the same friggin' spell at you until you roll over and die. You can have your finely-crafted watch - give me the sledgehammer to the face any day. ENERGY DRAIN!"
I also love that Stark's Lightning Strike was basically just two frames, the axe up high and the axe in the finished position. It was that fast that there were no frames in between. Instakill.
most other anime trying to pad out time would have entered slow mo and extended that scene for like 30+ seconds, maybe with a flashback. yet here they retained the instant nature of such a strike - having it actually land before the sound even appears because like IRL thunder comes after lightning. Good shit
6:08 I'm not sure if you caught it but when Stark the Warrior asks "Whose blood is this?" some people come to the conclusion that it's from Lugner however it's actually the Female Titan's blood.
It seems like episode 10 is most people's favorite, but this one is my favorite. The animation of the fight scenes just went really hard in this episode, and it's kind of unexpected in a fantasy series that takes its time. I mean, it didn't really need to go hard with the animation but it did. Plus, the music suited the scenes so well, especially Fern. I still get chills every time I hear the Zoltraaak soundtrack play while Fern is fighting Lugner.
14:58 “It did seem like he (Lugnar) cared about Linie… that’s what distracted him?” I took it as, despite his arrogance, he realized he needed some help, and was hoping Linie would hurry and finish off Stark to come and be his front-liner (wall or tank for you RPGers), but instead, she got bodied, which probably caused a small panic. That opening was all Fern needed to Zoltrac his torso.
Hello, I'm mexican. I really like their reactions and I feel like I learn English just by watching them. Although I don't fully understand I can know most of what they say. Keep uploading such enjoyable videos, thank you.
5:23 Imo, Frieren is reflecting on the similarities between her and demons. As one of the few elves left in this world, the beings that can understand her long life and her (mostly) indifference to mortals...are the demons. But unlike the demons, Frieren is able to make connections and learn the value of lives of mortals. Aura doesn't understand why one should still respect these suits of armors. Aura has no sentimentality. Meanwhile, Frieren used to think like Aura, but Himmel scolded her for blasting them before. Maybe she didn't change her mind automatically back then, but ever since Himmel died, Frieren began to understand how precious Himmel's memory is. Frieren has been changing and has been taking care of stories, ideals and objects that Himmel left behind. So now, Frieren can understand why these suits of armors mean a lot to the people of Graf Granat's people. It reinforces the belief that demons truly can't empathize with humans/mortals, but Frieren can. It might give comfort to Frieren that she is indeed different from the beings that she hates, and that Himmel still plays a role in her life.
Eisen is Dwarf so he can live a few hundred years or so, Frieren is an Elf so she can live for centuries. Heiter was human to, but he was priest/cleric which can prolong their lifespan a little longer. Himmel was human and no magical capabilities, and which is why he died an old man. Hope this helped!
It can also be that Himmels body was worn out after all the physical fighting since that is kinda common for athletes that do extreme sports their whole life
Awesome animation goodness throughout the whole episode aside (but seriously how many frame did they have for Stark putting on a jacket?!), I do love Stark's fight. Him getting up again and cursing at his master's weird logic... It has strong "advice your parents gave you years ago paying off now" vibes. Eisen didn't have a child himself but he sure raised this boy.
A couple of notes: aura is called the guillotine because after she enslaves her prey, she cuts their heads off so they can never rebel with moments of strong will. So no those are not empty suits of armor. Also, Frieren used dispel on the cursed soldiers even though though it wasn't mana effective. Last time, she devastated her troops, but Himmel gave her hell last time for not showing respect to the brave soldiers that had fallen in battle, again part of Frieren's personal growth. You notice how she showed care for the fallen soldier's after she dispelled the curse.
I love it when Stark realises he can just straight up TANK Linie's attacks because they don't hit as hard as Eisen's :D Also, the Demons aren't necessarily "evil". They're as much evil as a lion hunting a gazelle. They're just monsters/animals who developed specifically to hunt sentient beings, like humans and elves. They do not feel hate towards humanity, they just eat them like we eat cows or pigs. And I love that depiction of demons because you can't help but sympathise with them at some primal level. To them, lies and spells are what snares and buckshot are to us: simply means of securing food and minimising danger.
Well to the gazelle the lion is evil. But we're also considering a lion that doesn't have to eat the gazelle but chooses to do so anyway. To me evil is mostly about the reasons why you bring harm upon others, if you harm others but have sufficient reasons to do so then it's not evil (for instance the trolley problem, kill one man to save 5). But demons are out there killing people just to enjoy a good meal, they're not even like vampires who need human blood to survive, it's entirely a choice for them, and honestly I think if we found out that chickens could talk and had comparable intelligence to us, I'd think killing them would be evil too regardless of how good chicken nuggies are.
You found every Frieren episode getting better and better so far? And you have loved every episode so far? No worries. From now on it just keeps getting better and better. This show is perfect. Stark my mate 🪓
This show really is a top contender for one of the best anime of all time. It hasn't had a bad episode, characters are getting development and story, we are learning more and more about the world, the journey and the battle between everyone and demons. I can't list a single bad thing about this show and that after I've watched it on 3 different react channels and watched all the episodes myself. I just have to think, can they end this show at it's peak. Endings are one of the hardest things to pull off but I have a feeling I know where it's going.
I love Stark.. He is my Favourite character in this entire show He is not getting what he deserves but may be one day he will also become fan favourite❤
You guys didn’t say much about that but where linie keeps on attacking stark while changing weapons, but that part was so good to be honest! And I know, they’re bad, but her character and power was interresting, I really wanted to know who she memorized, like a list or names, I was intrigued 😅
I remember telling one of my friend that Linie definitely doesn't belong in this anime because of how smooth her action scenes were. I definitely didn't expected Frieren anime to have actions of this level because even manga doesn't have action that much all the action scenes are either extended or anime original.
@@kangaroo7143 I honestly really was caught off guard, but it’s just so pleasing to the eyes to see such a « fragile » looking character go hard like that
I don't think Lugner cared about Linie in a general sense (demon and all), but he did want her to help him fight Fern, who turned out to be a stronger opponent than he was expecting. When he saw Linie go down, he was thinking "Oh crap I'm in trouble." But he wasn't in trouble for long, because Fern promptly destroyed him.
Thanks for the reaction! "Far too easy." should only underscore how subtly powerful Frieren is. Fern's fatal shot should also underscore her strength. I honestly believe Fern could have done that at any time during their spamming exchange. As for Stark, I think if he could only understand he is actually STRONG, he would not have been hurt as much against Linie and it would have ended much sooner. Looking forward to ep10's reaction!
What's crazy about Stark's battle with that dumb beach, is that she actually conjured a heavier axe to try and kill him with and yet she still couldn't cut through him
By the way, it's a subtle point, but we actually know why Fern is quicker than Frieren at firing off spells. It's because unlike Frieren, she's always in a rush to get things done as quickly as possible. This was especially true when Fern was in such a hurry to learn magic before Heiter passed away. "She's learned more in 4 years than most mages do in 10. It's not a good thing." She forced herself to get good at quick casting so that she could squeeze even more practice into the same amount of time. It's such a good character moment in the middle of a fight, because all through the show we've repeatedly seen Fern getting frustrated when Frieren takes too long or wakes up late. We know Fern always is always in a hurry and can't stand unnecessary delays, and in this episode we see that she even expresses that through her spells.
Stark is more like a fantasy superhero than a real human. Hes like a video game tank class so its logical that he can take straight hits from a giant axe.
Ange: "I haven't watched a lot of fantasy. Lord of the Rings, that's about it." Bruh, just on your channel there is: House of the Dragon, The Witcher, Arcane, One Piece + most animes you've watched are fantasy, including Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Spirited Away, and Dragonball Z. Just because they don't have dwarves or elves doesn't mean they aren't fantasy ;)
Guys I think you should also react to the mini series of Frieren called 'Sosou no Frieren- Marumaru no Mahou' it has small 1-2 minute length of episodes consisting of adorable Chibi versions of our characters in short and funny little stories, highly recommend it!
I am sure there will be times where the story subverts this but I agree with you two in the pre discussion. At this point in the story, Frierens word is essentially law for the entire series until proven otherwise.
Well, Fern has the mana capacity and enough punch behind her (heavily modified) Zoltrak ... so no wonder why spamming "ordinary offensive magic" is a reliable "tactic" for her. ^^
When first fighting Aura, Frieren was blasting the puppets since it was the most effective way, and she had no emotional connection to them. Afterwards she said she was scolded by Himmel, who probably did have this empathy for the puppets. So this time around, Frieren ends up dispelling the armors instead, and remarks on Auras lack of empathy, which is reason to kill her.
My pet theory: Stark was just as strong as Eisen 3 or so years ago, the last time they sparred, and he's spent those 3 years training to be even stronger. So I think Stark was wrong when he said Linie's attacks were weak. Linie hits just as hard as Eisen, but that's not hard enough to defeat present day Stark.

never change a running system! That´s why Fern is a boss and Dr. Strange is a loser.
I also love that Stark's Lightning Strike was basically just two frames, the axe up high and the axe in the finished position. It was that fast that there were no frames in between. Instakill.

9 Frames anticipation. One frame (or 2 depending on how you count) and 30-odd frames follow through. All that's needed for perfect impact 😊
I give you the funny number, friend
'' Zoltraak '' and '' Fear brought me this far '' really are my favorite music tracks of the series thus far.
Evan Call is an amazing composer
Me too.
Zoltraak is my favorite track in anime period. Its the only anime song that I have in my spotify playlist now lol.

I think he was more surprised that his panic backup suddenly split.
Stark with the comedy and Fern with serious face they literally are a perfect couple.
nah she's toxic man
Fern’s glare of disappointment never gets old.
Fern is every bit her masters student. Her mannerisms in combat are so alike.

Fern's mastered Zoltraak so well she's probably the best user. She's like Qual.

Stark slowly learning the lessons his master taught him all those years ago by beating the shit out of him lol.
It's not a choice because it is ingrained in their nature. It's all they understand because they're monsters.
