Fun fact: The dance in the manga was just 2 panels. And unlike a lot of modern anime, this wasn't using CGI to make the drawing process easier: This entire sequence was hand-drawn, using a recording of real dancers as reference. The animators worked really hard to give this ship some extra love.
this adaptation is so so good because they are so deliberate with their choice. even the very quick flashback to Himmel telling Frieren he wants to show her the blue weed flowers, that is anime only. there is no flashback panel to Himmel in the manga to tease you about what Frieren is remembering, but they took the time to add it in the anime, so when the reveal finally comes, it's so satisfying. this adaptation could not have had a better creative team in charge of it
You're kinda wrong there tbh. It's the exact opposite, most animators use real footage as reference not CGI for dances. Even then it's actually no difference, it's the same thing, whether it's real footage or CGI, the animators are just tracing over them, not saying it's an easy process. It's actually harder if you go for the CGI option because you have to make 3D models and animated them before having the 2D animators trace over it while the other you can just go get 2 dancers and film them.
@@HPblu3 ... You say it's the exact opposite and then almost word-for-word repeat what I said. What is wrong with you? And no, you don't just trace over real life footage and except it to look good in an anime. That's NOT how it works.
You can find examples on youtube. Ofc it's not 100% 1 for 1 but you would be surprised how much of it is just pure tracing.@@ChrisMorray Your reading comprehension is also kind off lacking but doesn't really matter. :P
@@HPblu3 You don't get to whine about reading comprehension after trying to "correct" me by literally repeating the exact same thing. Read before you reply.
As much as everyone swoons over the dance scene (rightfully so), I think people still don’t give it enough credit. So much is communicated with no words: at first Fern is very nervous and unsure, then she feels vulnerable and exposed and Stark notices, at which point he takes charge and starts leading with confidence which reassures Fern and leads to her finally enjoying herself and smiling all through the rest of the dance. You can see it all in their expressions and poses and there’s no need for words. It’s a wonderfully executed scene, even better than people have thus far articulated. And it also plays completely contrary to what we’ve come to expect from Fern and Stark, and their usual dynamic (Fern stoic and confident, Stark nervous and timid), serving as a wonderful contrast of their development.
Madhouse went all out for this dance. The manga only showed two panels of Stern dancing. I'm calling the ship Stern because it is german for star but Fark sounds really funny.
"That doesn't suit you," said with a soft smile that could power a lighthouse. And then they danced. Truly beautiful. The animation you're talking about is a standard for Madhouse (the studio behind this). They're including background and small detail movements, which add incredible depth and flavor. However during the dance, they clearly chose to use background stills in order to emphasize the dance. One of the few times I've seen them do something like that, and for this specific scene I fully approve. The subtle epic moment though, was Stark and the Lord each reaching a bit more of emotional closure regarding their respective lives' emotional traumas. And poor Sein. He reaches the point of seeing Frieren as attractive enough to approach, asks her to dance, and gets shot down.
I love that no one dies or some character reunited but a dance sequence make someone tear up by the wholesomeness alone just shows how much we want this ship to happen and we want it NOW!
@Calie&Ange Not sure if someone already did mention this, but most names in the show are German names, Mut=courage, Himmel=Sky/Heaven, Frieren=freeze or be cold, Heiter=joyfull, Eisen=Iron, Flamme=Flame or you could say ignites the fire (in frieren), Fern=distance or far away, Stark=strong.... they use those german words not just to give the characters names, they also discribe their peronalitys
I don’t think many people understand the work behind that dance animation. For it to look THAT smooth, the animators need to have an incredible understanding of 3D form, also the skill it takes to draw just a single frame in general. Many thought it was rotoscope but is all hand drawn. Forever grateful for the animation on this anime.
As a German, I have to say that the name Stern fits much better. All characters have German names and Stern means Star(s) in German. Fark isnt a german name😅
Madhouse hire dancer from a school that the animat0rs can witness the waltz. Evan call developed for this episode a whole new waltz. The whole Dance scene is hand-drawn and can be found as sketches on the X acc from Madhouse, So no CGI or rotoscope is used. Madhouse blatant effort reached us
The name "Mut" (the little kid heir) translates to "Courage". I dont know if someone on Patreon or the Comment section already filled you in on all of the translated names. Since they all suit their character i think its cool to know. Just wanted to let you all know. Google translate is correct most of the times, but some translations turn out somewhat weird and unfitting I love Frierens name because it translates to feeling cold and Frieren hates that, which i think is really cute.
The names are all great, except "Gabel", which is just funny. They did that poor man a bit dirty with that name. I get that it was probably chosen because he is a servant and teaches Stark manners, but it didn't have to be "fork"😂
Pretty much every episode of Frieren covers 2 chapters of the manga, which is why each one feels like a 2-part episode. In most of the episodes, it works out really well with the two halves connecting to each other nicely, e.g. the episode with the hero sword and Stark's past.
As for why Frieren didn't take Sein up on his offer, 1) it was funny, and, more importantly, 2) the whole journey is to ultimately reuinite with the immortal soul of her boyfriend. She's spoken for!
Yeah, beam as in "ray(s of light)", which is how we usually visualize holy things (Strahl is the name of the holy capital on the map). I like that one since we use the word stråle in my language
Most of the names on this show are German words. So they're pretty descriptive of the characters. So 9/10 you can drop the name of Google translate and see what they mean. Mut means something like bravery, Ange. 😂 As a German speaker is always fun to be "spoiled" about a character by simply watching the anime or finding humor on how reactors (and the VAs) pronounce the name ❤😂
we should get eisen and stark meetup... they're the only relationship that we dont see in the present time. we deserve to see them together in real time lol
I love how every character in this show is shipping Fern and Stark and just waiting until those two accept it hahah 😆 This episode was everything. I was in denial that they would really give us this much and they gave us even more 🥰
The dance animation looks different because some of it might be rotoscoped. Disney used to do that waaaay back in the day. You take a video of a real person dancing and then use that footage as a base for the art.
Personally i think eisen will die while they are on the adventure but when they get to aureul he will pop up and he will tell eisen of his adventure freiren when talk to himmel and fern will talk to heiter
Yea you can tell they definitely rotoscoped for certain scenes in this show, and it looks amazing. The attention to detail when it comes to clothing for just things like sitting down like when Fern sat with Stark at the bar reminds me of Ghibli. Always putting attention to even the most simple actions gives it the most human and realistic quality to an animation. Also don't worry, the Manga is very far along and with how popular the show is there is no doubt this series will be approved for the El Dorado Arc.

Well, Courage is the name of some famous dog, so it is kind of a pet's name ^^
