  • Paul escapes an intense confrontation on the Ashby Canal tow path as he's greeted by a rather large, intimating dog. At least after that encounter he can enjoy a relaxing narrowboat journey....or can he? As the wind picks up we move, only to find ourselves in a spot of bother after the winding hole. With the boat on the wrong side of the canal, Paul pushes against the wind, grounding Narrowboat, 'Assumption is', in the shallow water leaving Liz to pull the boat as the horses would have done in the olden days!

    Well done Paul, I am not sure I would have walked past. Dogs should be on a lead on a tow path. Public right of way and very narrow. We live on a Narrowboat and the amount of times a dog has jumped onto our boat. We have a very nervous older cat living on board. Didn’t help that whilst in Newbury he was pinned down on the towpath by a dog running free. The owner just stood there totally bemusedly while I shouted from our boat to get their dog off our cat. Very scary. Love your vlogs and your boat, beautiful.

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I agree, we do allow Ernie off lead but only if we can see that no one is around, more for their safety of him jumping up and getting them dirty than anything else 🤣 and we always have him on a lead when passing people, other dogs or moored boats. Even when we sit out with him he is always on his long line ready for me to grab if necessary. Its quite common though I've seen for dogs just to roam around the tow path, I've even had dogs get on the boat. Luckily Ernie was out at the time 🤣 thanks for watching and glad you are enjoying the vlogs 😀 😊

    Hi Liz i totally agree dogs should be on a lead and in control in public places. We live in a forestry and so many people walk their dogs off lead. My little scotty has been attacked by spaniels, whippets, Labrador and sheep dogs and alm the time people happily lets their dogs run free while creating havoc. My puppy became an anxious dog needing dog whisperer treatment. I think you protect your dog better on lead. My rant is now over . 😊

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So sorry to hear that, its horrible isn't. I think I've made Ernie a bag of nerves with other dogs as I fed the fear down the line as my previous dog was attack while I was out with him. Ernie is friendly but barks at most dogs because he feels my tension 😏

  • @pamcullen537

    Years ago we moored at Shackerstone on the Ashby and the owner of the boat in front regularly put his smallish dog out to relieve itself and went back on his boat , he wasn’t very happy when our dog who was on a lead bit it 🦆💕 Also he never seemed to clean his dogs mess up.

    Well done to you both, getting the boat back on the right track. Hard work !!!!! I totally agree with you dogs should not be on the tow path alone. It’s ok for owners to say oh he’s ok, he’s friendly but not everyone likes dogs, especially when they come up barking at you. That could scare children for the rest of their lives. I get so cross with people.

      Don't get me wrong, you'll probably see Ernie off lead a couple of times around the boat but that's only if I check that no one is around and I am with him and watching his every movement, of you get my drift 🤣

  • @annclark5082
    @annclark5082 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I totally agree with you about dog owners! Big or small they should be under control. As well as being scared of the dog I would have been scared of where I was putting my feet! I bet they don't clean up after it!!!
    A few years ago when we owned our narrowboat, we were on the KandA. I was walking our dog, Baxter, along the towpath. An alsatian jumped off a narrowboat in a lock and attached itself to Baxter! It took 3 men to get it off. I have never been so scared in my life! I just thank god that it was a sunny day with plenty of people around.

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh that's so awful Ann l, my previous dog was attacked and you never really get over that do you. I think that's why Ernie barks at most dogs, not because he's aggressive at all but because I've fed the fear of dogs through the lead as I never really have got over it and think that every dog has the capability to attack. That's probably why I like to moor away from other boats in the middle of no where 🤣 As for this dog, we passed where they had been moored a few days after they had moved on and the area was spotless, not a dog mess in sight 😉

      @annclark5082 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@uponreflection well that is one good thing, especially on towpaths.
      My distrust is just with Alsatians. They seem to be getting popular again with a couple in our village. I happily cross the road if I see one coming. I couldn't have walked past that one as calmly as Paul.
      Have a good week and look forward to your next vlog

We live in the region where the earthquake and tsunami hit - we are around 55 miles, as the crow flies from the epicenter. There was little to no damage to us, but hell it was traumatic!!! The quakes and aftershocks just kept coming and have done since the 1st! My wife - who is Japanese - had never experienced anything like it, I certainly had not! Did you see the condition of the boat that the dog lived on? I would imagine responsible dog ownership was not a high priority. Unfortunately I often have to walk by an encampment of rundown/broken down RVs near my office many with pitbulls (I think u call them bully dogs) used as guard dogs some leashed, but not always. Not pleasant! Scary at times. And yes, before people pile on, poor does not equate irresponsible! But dogs that are used to protect ones possessions in such circumstances are not trained guard dogs, but rather dogs selected for their aggressive reputation or appearance. OK rant over !😮

I’ve been 9 years on, haven’t been terrified yet guys… enjoy the life, keep it real, it’s a gentle life… so, your encounter was at the winding hole nr, bridge 44, my dog was on his lead when I met one of the many ‘tribes’ of the Ashby. The blow back I encountered for my dog ‘attacking’ another was venomous and ended up all over ‘idiotbook’. Against my better judgement I reluctantly left the Ashby. *Morena Liz, Paul & Ernie, The opening shot from above - With those two boats moored right on the bend, does that make it that much harder to get around with your boat? Dog - I am so pleased that Paul filmed it all. I would also have a long stick (walking stick/pole) to have to at least ward off the dog, (or any dog) as it was aggressive when it came up with its teeth showing like that. A good rant was required. I actually felt Paul's fear, cos I have been bitten years ago by a dog, and Paul had no where else to even try to walk around it, like you would in the city, where you can cross the road!. The drone filming also shows you what is ahead on your travels which will be really helpful for you. Yay, Liz, you & Paul finally getting out of that predicament... Well so next week is full of excitement aye 🙂.*

      Hi there Andrea. Poor Paul, he doesn't scare easily, he's braver than I am for sure. That's the trouble with tow paths, there just is no where to go if something does happen and most of time you can't see what's coming ahead round a bend. As for the moored boats on corners, it can make it tricky if the canal isn't very wide or if there is a bridge or something that you need to be inline for but those ones you saw on the drone footage where fine, the canal is wider there than it looks. I've ready somewhere to carry a spray bottle of water to ward off any dogs bit not really sure how effective that would be 🤔

      @@uponreflection *Liz years ago when I owned a dog & when I took her out for walks... there were roaming dogs.... so I just carried a metal (aluminum 1inch square) pole. Every time a dog came near I banged it on the ground that also scared the dogs away. The other thing that I got was a small hand held dog thing that when you pressed it... it then sent a high pitch noise that only dogs could hear to scare them off. I had taught my dog it was ok... and so it never worried her. But that dog in question in your video, as it came charging, even I was backing away from my computer monitor. That dog is protecting it's property of the barge.... and I get that... but it these times when you live on a barge and not much room to walk on by... then as a owner, you keep the dog tied up... or kept inside if you are away. I hope this will not be a regular occurrences on the waterways.*

    The owners of that troublesome dog clearly do not understand the law; It is a moderately reactive dog, so should not be allowed to run freely on the towpath in case it does get involved in a confrontation with either another dog, or a person. The consequences of a bad incident could go tragically wrong for the dog and be financially catastrophic for it’s owner. To say their dog is protecting the boat is no excuse for their ignorance. Enjoyed the rest of your video though, keep safe!

BUT it's not up to people to know your dog... especially in a public atea.... it's up to the dog owner to control and protect their pet. Imagine if someone were terrified and struck their dog?? No worries, you guys will probably cross paths with the boat again. Life on the canals is a small world. You may even hear other boaters speak of a similar incident elsewhere. Irresponsible dog owners need to be held accountable before someone gets seriously hurt. Do contact the CRT and see if this is something they can deal with if they have a boat number. Don't let this one incident dishearten you, the canal world is a wonderful one and you guys are SO lucky to be a part of it.

    Being on the towpath is an advantage if a dog attacks. If possible, pick it up, they will probably release their bite when all paws are off the ground. Then throw it into the canal. If it's too big or you can't get it to release then jump in and hold the dog under until it stops attacking. People have a definite advantage over dogs in the water. Sounds harsh? Not really the dogs fault? That's not going to help you much when you have a lifetime of disablement and disfigurement. The owner will get a fine.

    Well it needs to be muzzled. That is not right i would not stay there at all with that dog there .Well it will keep the kids and robbers away . But still not good that it has the run of the path. As i was a dog owner i think the same as you do. It is not right for that owner to do that at all. In my younger days i was working on my bike and i did see a big dog running at me and did not see the owner at all .Well it got me just as next door let there kids out , they scream and went to run bake in there home and it let go of me and ran after the kids . Well that dog let out a howl and ran of as next door hit it very hard in the back end of that dog , never saw it again ever.
