81. Narrowboat Living - Mooring on the Shropshire - The Shroppie Shelf

- We continue our narrowboat journey looking for a mooring on the Shropshire Union Canal after having a few tricky moments with the famous 'Shroppie Shelf' and shallow waters. We see some different sights as cows fall into the canal, and peacocks sound their loud calls. We take a walk into Brewood, fill up with water at Wheaton Aston and cruise to yet another lovely mooring on the Shropshire. Oh and I paint the boat again, feeling like I'm on the Titanic as I lay on the bow to reach the difficult areas!

Erbie doesn't get hot inside the boat, we have a trick on a hot day to actually keep the windows and curtains closed as this prevents the warm air entering the boat and it stays nice and cool..when cruising, he can get a bit warm sitting on roof so on really hot days (should we actually get any of those!) He will have to sit on the deck in the shade for parts of the cruise. So nice to hear that you are wbjoying the videos. Thank you so much for watching 😊

Great paint job Liz! And isn't Brewood a gorgeous village. Stunning scenery on the Shropshire Union Canal. The peacocks on the roof remind me that my partner, Lynette, had a peacock that used to do the same, up on her roof serenading the surrounding suburb. He used to escape often so Lynette gave him to the artists' colony "Montsalvat" in Eltham, now a northern suburb of Melbourne. They had a few peacocks already, including a pure white one like the one in your video. Thanks for another lovely video guys.

Anyway, ref brushing the weed on waterline. Our builder said that the algae eats into the paint etc so best to keep to a minimum. I brush the sides every couple of weeks. Keep on cruising.❤

Brought a shower Dome yesterday... then today I have brought a new freestanding stove... which arrives next week. I think have just about all things... except there is a delay in the Shower unit arriving... dang shipping delays as it is a container in the ocean somewhere.... until it lands here, near the end of July.... so no demotion can start until that arrives. Also still waiting on the quotes to arrive as well.. 🙂.*

The building you showed with white window frames was built on the winnings of a horse bet can’t remember names etc or date it’s all in the Pearson canal guide ( sorry to keep pushing it) but it would help with local knowledge. My wife always said Stretton aqueduct needs painting, perhaps you could get her indoors to do it 😂😂
I've just looked it up. Speedwell Castle. Won on the winnings of a horse called speedwell in the 18th century. 😊

I guess that’s what you might call Aberdeen anguish 🥴l was impressed by liz’s impression of a figurehead whilst painting the bow lt’s a pity the Stretton Aqueduct hasn’t been painted it’s been looking shabby for years.

Hi guys just seen your vlog very nice.Has any one said to get some shroppy fenders .A couple of wheelbarrow wheels works a treat.Keep vloging ❤
Hi Paul, we have a few of the go kart tyres and then the hard round fenders. What we have found works is dropping the har defender down and then attaching the go kart fenders to them to soften the movement. So far, fingers crossed we've found this method good, no knocking on the shelf or anything. 😊
Great video plenty of nice places to visit up there, you just need a couple of wheelbarrow wheels to keep u off the shelf
Hi Mark, think we have finally sussed the shelf now. We tend to use the solid round fenders dripped right down and then add a Go kart tyre to soften the blow..perfect, no bouncing off the shelf or banging. 😉😊

What a great clip of the peacocks on the roof of the house with their amazing colours, you wouldn't like them singing by your boat as you would never get any sleep🤣.

Hi Susan. It was nice to finally meet Alan, you could probably tell how excited I was from his vlog 🤣 We really enjoyed the show again this year. We didn't film though, just enjoyed the day. The weather was good Saturday, unfortunately the sunshine didn't last and the rain came on the other days so we were just lucky 😊
Good call on not filming and just enjoying yourselves. Looked very crowded, and managing Ernie (and Paul) and a camera would not be as much fun!
@susanb4481 it was really busy, I don't think it helped that Saturday was the better day weather wise so everybody had the same idea we had of going that day. Ernie, did so well although he did find it a bit too loud and tricky at times. 😊

Hi Jan. Thanks for that I've actually just checked back and that was a twig that he was chomping up, I think as we had just been playing with it. I do think he had probably picked something up though earlier that week, he does tend to like the odd geese and duck poo🙈 thankfully he's ok now though. 🙂
@@uponreflection My dog will eat anything and everything! We went to our Son's house at the weekend playing with a tennis ball then started to strip and eat it. Sunday was bum trouble, struggling to poo then in the stainless steel sink to wash his bum off. Another 3 poos of tennis ball, all fine. We never had these problems with our Border Collie 🤣🤣
What dog have you got Jan? Our last dog (black labrador) used to eat everything too. In his 14years he had to have 3 operations. 2 to remove socks that he had eaten and I a tennis ball. We had to have eyes in the back of our head with him. X

@uponreflection it was different it was my 1st visit , lots of lovely very expensive boats there , but I thought there would be more market traders there and the floor in the traders tent was terrible , we went back Sunday, but as soon as the rain started we scarpered , good thing we did
That floor must have got even worse as the rain poured down. I seem to remember more stalls last year but maybe I'm remembering wrong, I know what you mean though I was hoping to grab or at least see a few boats things that I could treat myself too but most of the stalls were selling the big systems or advertising. We've been twice now amd we have said that it was probably our last one. As much as we love going and do really enjoy the day we've kind of done it now if that makes sense 😊
Yh I totally understand , paying more than 200k for a boat is out of my zone , I still struggle to understand , that say the deisels where going for 175 and battery boats 200k + & you still need a diesel engine in the winter , how long whould it take you to recover the initial money , I'd problerbly be under the ground by then 🤣 , but I can't see us going back again , but I'm glad we went

Do you like boat life? I think it would be so much fun changing life living in a home and taking care of the lawn to floating. I know you still work hard but at 70 I am so very tired of yard work. You are living the dream. My dream is traveling in a motor home. But since COVID the production of rv’s is horrible. Cars and trucks not much better here in United States. But the upside is being retired the last ten years and owning three dogs. Except for vet bills. Less clothes shopping for me.
Hi there Jan. We both absolutely love boatlife, the freedom, the tranquility and the choice to move on and see new sights. We certainly are living the dream and are very grateful to be able to enjoy a different lifestyle to what we once had. In the UK the upcoming thing since Covid is people buying and transforming vans for travelling, quite a few boaters have done it too. Hope you and your 3 dogs keep well and stay happy enjoying your retirement. 😊
We have a river near us that was open to the people for as long as i can remember. Then the other day a board was put up on the gate saying you need to get a pass from now on . As someone was seen picking blackberries, too early in the year.? So you can go there with a pass that will cost you £10 a year.? And it still is open to the public ? but cost you £10 a year. Well that is so daft and just who is getting the money. For a bit of plastic with your name on it.
That seems a bit of a harsh punishment just for picking blackberries too early in the year. Where abouts is this?
Have you got the MERLIN app on your phone. It identifies different birds.
Hi Nick. Yes I downloaded it the other day, I did try and use it not so long ago but it didn't work due to signal or something and then I kind of forgot all about it. I'll try it again when I'm on the back boat and in signal range. 😊
Question from a someone who knows nothing about narrowboat life (lol) but, I don't know if you guys need to keep your vehicle close for some reason but, just curious is there a way you could park your car a few days/weeks ahead of where you plan on cruising so you don't have to go back for it so often?
Hi Roger, yes I suppose we could move the car forward and then get a train or bus back to where we are moored. That's something we may have to do when on rivers as there are fewer road bridges. We use it every few days to get shopping and nipping out to explore other places that aren't on the canal. If we didn't have Ernie then we may leave it further away and for longer times but we generally take him for a walk and collect the car at the same time so it's not really a problem.
