Whenever a company other than Nintendo makes a Mario game, it is really hit or miss. Like Mario's Time Machine ( • Mario's Time Machine |... ), I still have nightmares about that. But when Square took the reins to make Super Mario RPG, man oh man does it come together. It still plays well and has elements of modern RPG games. Plus we get two characters introduced in this game that NEVER appear anywhere else, and fans have been rooting for these characters to appear in Smash, they are Mallow and Geno. Two companions that help you on your quest to restore balance to the world. Also called Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars, I'm really excited to dive back into this game and play me some Mario Final Fantasy.

What would all of Geno's moves be if he was in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?
I think you could make most of his spells work as specials. Beam is a charged neutral shot. Whirl is a side special which acts as a throwing item. Blast would probably be better as a down smash to bring down lights around him. While boost could be a timed temporary damage increase as his down special. With Geno Flash as the ultimate where people hit in the initial cannon AoE get caught in a large energy ball.
There are some I don't have any ideas for like his up special or how to adapt his weapon types into multi-directional smash attacks
*Special:* Geno Beam _~can be charged~__
*Side Special:* Geno Whirl _~does extra knockback if left/right and B are tapped at the right time~_
*Down Special:* Geno Boost _~similar to Wii Fit Trainer~_
*Up Special:* Star Step _~kick off of a star; direction of star's fall is opposite Geno's ascent~_
*Final Smash:* Geno Flash _~charge is part of animation; no additional input needed~_

I did not know Mario RPG and Mario 64 were released in the same year! That is mind-blowing!
Mario RPG was definitely a “swan song” for the SNES.
My parents wouldn't buy me a N64 so I convinced myself that Mario RPG graphics were just as good as Mario 64.

re: 100 Jump Challenge
It seems to be even worse on any device that needs an HDMI cable. There's that slight delay on Virtual Console or SNES Classic.

that explains why it took me a couple days of doing the 100 jump challenge back when I played SMRPG on the Wii. I failed so many times lol
Back in the day I could do it on SNES but on SNES Classic I had to save state after every 10 jumps...
I think there's a exploit in which you can pause mid jump to make it easier. I could be thinking of a different minigame though.

I'd say the ability to block standard enemy attacks with well-timed button presses was pretty revolutionary.

I bought this game on the WiiU like two weeks ago. I’ve been taking my time with it and I absolutely love it. People like you and speed runners are the reason I knew about this game. It’s one of my favorites and that’s saying something.

I would have mentioned timed defense. The timed offense was intuitive and easy to figure out, but timing defensive attacks are what really made the game so different than others in the genre.

I think the 100 jump challenge to get the super suit is the only challenge I never completed in this masterpiece of a game. Thanks for this recompletion video. I had a friend in high school though that could do it easily. Blew me completely away.
TLDR: I really like this game and have many memories around it.
I begged my parents to pick up this game for me. I was in elementary school - fourth grade I believe. I didn't know what RPG stood for, I thought it meant rampage. I seriously thought it was Super Mario Rampage. It just caught my eye when we were shopping in K Mart or somewhere. They bought it for me, and I don't remember being disappointed at what it was. It was bright and colorful and full of Mario goodness. It taught me well enough that I didn't have much of a hard time with it and beat it. I had rented Final Fantasy IV and VI before, but never got far, so this was my real introduction to RPGs. The only part I remember being stuck on was the area that gave you the status effect of turning you into a mushroom. I didn't understand the accessory system and didn't buy enough to get through until grinding my way through.
My best friend also bought the game and we tried to sync our games together while we talked over the phone. Even with the random elements, it worked out well. I was in a summer care program and all I could think about was the game. I just wanted to play it all the time. I didn't understand the level up mechanics - I leveled up HP every single time. When I beat it, I would take it out every once in a while and load up my final save to beat Smitty (fun battle in itself) just to see the end. I even brought my SNES to grad school with me, but only got to the Punchinello fight when I realized I had encountered that word in real life.
The music is fantastic, I've listened to the OST at work and home when doing tedious tasks countless times. My favorites in no particular order: Fight Against a Somewhat Stronger Monster, Fight Against an Armed Boss, Beware the Forest's Mushrooms, And My Name's Booster (or Bukki), Slope, and Fight Against Culex. The trilling sounds in some of those just tickle me. Culex's theme could have straight up been lifted from another Final Fantasy game as far as I can tell.
Really an overall amazing game. It gave me my love for RPGs of all kinds and taught me the basics of how to play. Kind of spoiled me in one respect - I really enjoyed being able to enter additional commands during your turn to do additional hits/damage. Very engaging in a turn based game. The only other turn based game I can think of that did something similar was Squall's gunblade in FFVIII which wasn't nearly as impressive.
The Geno squad might hate on me, but my main team was Mario, Bowser, and Princess Toadstool. I never really fully completed it, but I did pick up the majority of the items.
I played this game as a kid when it came out and HATED it. I revisited it about 15 years later and grew to appreciate it.
SMRPG was pretty much my introduction to RPGs. It made me fall in love with the genre, and is the reason I still mostly play only RPGs to this day. I had only played mostly Sonic and other platformers, plus a few fighting games, before renting it from a local video store. I fell in love with it and finally got my parents to buy it for me.

I've never been much of a completionist, but I did 100% Mario RPG back in the day. I loved this game so much... And haven't played it since. That's why I don't complete games. I can never stomach playing them again.

Forgot to mention the Sheep Attack item:
- You buy the Mystery Egg from a merchant in Moleville
- Have Peach use it in battle ten times while she has the B'tub Ring to get the Lamb's Lure
- Use that item 40 times in battle to get the Sheep Attack.
I could never do the 100 jumps, my best was 39.
As for the game itself, it wasn't my first RPG, that was Lunar the Silver Star on Sega CD. Of course I had no idea what I was doing as a kid, but then this game came an taught me how it works. Eventually went back to Lunar and completed it.
I need to play this game. I hope Jirard completes Bowsers Inside Story DX

Super Mario RPG has always been my #1 favorite game, since I was maybe 8 years old. The soundtrack alone bring a ton of nostalgia.

When I was a kid, my brother had a very bad habit of playing games and not completing them. Our mom got mad and told him, he needed to complete Mario RPG 100% before she would buy him the next game. Lo and behold, 100% the game and we loved every moment of it, recently we played through it again and set "Hard Mode" rules and it made it a full fresh take on it and it was amazing

Four years later, we all were delighted at the surprise news that Square Enix and Nintendo made a from-the-ground-up faithful remake for the Switch!
This is probably gonna be my next game I’ll stream!
I think SMRPG is the most important Mario game in history in terms of world building. Even though a lot of the characters were dropped from canon, it was the first Mario game that truly engrossed you in the mushroom kingdom.

I unfortunately never beat this game, but never the less it has lived on as one of my all time favourite games... It is insane how beautiful it STILL is... It was more impressive than DK Country graphics wise man... And mechanics wise... Equally impressive... That old school Nintendo polish at it's finest.

This game, Earthbound, and Link to the Past are the reasons I still own a Super Nintendo and keep it hooked up to my TV.

SMRPG is a one of the single most important games in the Mario franchise. While I do think it's a little rough around the edges and feels more like a FF game with a lighthearted story than a true Mario game, without it the Paper Mario and M&L series would never exist, both of which have produced games and characters that are some of the best in the whole franchise. It's like the original Super Mario Bros. to me: a solid framework game that set the foundation for even greater games down the line.

I wish they’d make a true sequel to it. Or a remastering of it with Mario Lost Odessy kinda graphics. Just something that will make new people see how awesome the game is.
Minor correction on the surprise boxes: there is only one in the entire game that is actually missable. It involves jumping on Toad's head the first time you enter the castle in the Mushroom Kingdom. Every other box you can go back and find if you missed them the first time.
