Isn't this style called "kimono hime" (him-may)? Or is that just the magazine that shows off styles like this?

I think the 2nd style is my favorite but they're all gorgeous!
I've always adored traditional Japanese clothes of all types, especially yukata, but as a westerner it's hard to know what's appropriate, so mixing the styles is a dream come true. Thank you for the links!

Hey, Shogo! Today I learned that there is a thing called "forbidden colors" in Japan. I heard that peasants were not allowed to wear bright colors meant for higher status people, but when I googled it in English on TH-cam I couldn't find a single video on this topic. I also heard that this thing was so obscure not even all Japanese people know of it, and I am certainly hearing it for the first time. Is there any chance you could make a video on it?

I think there’s something similar to this is some of the ancient western countries. Purple was a really hard to get color, only found in India I think (Idk, I remember Indigo… India?), so to get it you either needed to walk on land or boat. Now, if you walked on land you had to walk every far over dangerous lands and risk getting mugged, while if you boated you would risk getting attacked by pirates or getting caught on rocks. Because of this, Purple was reserved for royalty only, and if commoners wore it they would be stoned to death.
Idk, Just something random I thought I’d share. I would love to hear the “Japanese version” of this.

There were many laws about who could wear what, not just in terms of colors, but also fabrics, types of dying, and even what could be used for linings! (No purple or silk for you! You can use red here, but not here...No kanoko knots!) These varied by rank/class and time period, and they even sent out detectives to find out who was flaunting the laws in private! Can't have mere merchants wearing the same kimono as samurai! There are a number of books that cover this, but I'm not sure what is currently in print or available on the internet.

@@verreal i think nowdays people dont really talk about the past much besides ww2 and stuff related to it i think when it comes to status it means power or wealth usually it tends to poor people who do dangerous stuff and get themselves killed which isnt wide spoken.

Kimono is one of the most beautiful ways of dressing, but yes I can certainly see that it would be difficult in daily life. I just love how this is a modern twist on it and a way to bring it back and make it more accessible for so many people to wear it.

I loved this video and I agree with you - that would be cool. I imagine that the shorter male "kimono" (they may be called something else) could easily be worn with ordinary trousers or even jeans, and could potentially be used less tightly closed as a jacket. They could actually be adapted to have the side slit, to allow ties to be incorporated so that an additional belt was not required. Actually, it occurs to me that the female Kimono could have ties added so that perhaps the elastic back belt was replaced. Never mind, just let me entirely redesign all your national dress 🙄😃

Very cool and lovely looks. Kimono are so versatilve; I personally enjoy layering them with trumpet skirts. Having the ability to play with folds, lengths and texture really opens up creative possibilities. I first started messing around with my kimonos after receiving one that arrived being much shorter than listed. Having inspiration to experiment like this extends usage and creates so many new possibilities.

So reassuring to see that the blending of Japanese and Western clothes is becoming popular - a full kimono outfit is a bit beyond me at present! Thank you! ❤️
I do have a question, though - for the second look with the skirt, could a haori be used instead of a full kimono?

    • @eddie4013
      @eddie4013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I guess it would depend. Haori are like jackets for kimono so I imagine it would depend on how thick the material is. I'm sure since haori are shorter it would be easier than having to fold up all the material of a kimono.

This was wonderful! Thank you and the ladies so much. I am bigger than most Japanese, but I dearly love to wear kimono and finding one that will go all the way around me and have the proper overlap is very, very difficult. My solution was to purchase a skirt that matches one of the colors of the kimono and so it's what shows (instead of the juban) should the kimono flap open too much. Apparently, I'm more in fashion than I realized.

Historically, did many people actually wear fancy kimono, or was it just the wealthy 1%. Similar to the way we think all Victorian women wore big pretty dresses, when that was really o ly the wealthy 1%. But in hindsight we seem to think everyone had this opportunity in the past when it wasn't true. Cam you talk more about what people wore day to day in historical Japan? Thank you Shogo! ☆

This was such a lovely video. I've always loved how kimono looked since I first saw it maybe 18 years ago as a kid. Pretty recently, I've made an impulse buy with an obi. I studied how to tie it and when I finally succeeded I was like ''Wow... This is pretty constraining'' haha
I was worried it was kinda frowned upon to wear kimono in a more casual way or not the ''proper'' way, so seeing this video I'm glad to hear Japanese women think wearing a kimono can be difficult too at times and it's okay to incorporate other items! I love the hakama style and want to wear it more often daily ^^

I already know someone is gonna say something like “Asia is getting too westernized”, but this is a perfect example of the kind of westernization that’s perfectly fine and what should be done more. When I’m saying “too westernized”, I’m referring to the standard as BEING white or any other western culture as a whole. Losing the core of your culture to assimilate to western culture. Historically in America, the English people and Spanish people who came to America wanted to strip the Natives of their own tradition, culture and language to BE a part of their society. That’s being too westernized. So when beauty standards are made to change your natural traits to look more western, that would be too westernized because that’s what the white people did to the Native Americans by force. To summarize, being “too westernized” means losing the core of your own culture to a western one. Changing the style of a kimono slightly to have a western style or changing to a western style of operating certain systems more efficiently are the kinds of westernization that would be perfectly fine. It doesn’t change the core of the culture or tradition in most cases.

One advantage I thought of to the Kimono and Skirt combination was, for us fat people, it works as a way to maybe not need as wide a kimono. Works better for women and femmes, but it's an option at least! /o/

Study it! I wish that I had began to learn Japanese at an earlier age.

Thank you very much but my parents don't really like to travel and I'm under 11 so I have to wait plenty of years

Great great video!! You should trade mark the idea otherwise several fashion designers will take it! 😉

Thanks I will try some of these ideas to mix my modern clothes with my kimono but also with my kimono haori short jackets that I normally wear with jeans. I will try a skirt and belt on top as well after your video. Maybe you could show haori as well.
