  • You have chosen 5 anime characters for me to analyze their kimono outfits. I'm going to look at the outfit of Yuko Ichihara (xxxHolic), Princess Kaguya (Princess Kaguya), Daki (Demon Slayer), Sesshomaru (InuYasha), Lady Eboshi (Princess Mononoke). Let's see how accurate the Japanese Garments are animated and if they are cosplay-able.
    00:00 Intro into "The Billy Knowledge"
    01:32 Yuko Ichihara (xxxHolic)
    10:11 Princess Kaguya (Princess Kaguya)
    16:42 Daki (Demon Slayer)
    21:50 Seshomaru (InuYasha)
    28:14 Lady Eboshi (Princess Mononoke)
    Thank you so much for watching!!

    Sesshoumaru’s yoroi design is based on Chinese Ming dynasty armor due to the anime’s lore of battling against demons from “the continent” and he’s accustomed to his spoils of war. Rumiko Takahashi has a lot of Chinese influence in her work.

      Id like to throw in a point as well,but the huge bit of fluff on his shoulder isn't actually part of his outfit. If you find the first time he's in his dog demon form you will see he also has the same fluff around him but far more wild. Now I've seen multiple answers from it being actually part of him,it being a sign of demon royalty, and apparently it being a demon parasite that acts as armor and a weapon. Heck, it even bleeds when damaged in the manga. Whatever it is, is alive and not a fashion statement.

      You mean ranma?
      Takahashi said The she came up with a cursed fountain as the cause of his transformation into a woman. She came up with the idea that if a curse fountain exists in modern times, it must be in China. That's the only reason China appeared That's why the main character went from Japan to China for training. It's not like the author takahashi has a particular attachment to China.
      If the main character goes to China for training, it's only natural that kung fu clothes will appear. Nothing special

    LOVE this video!! Especially the bit about Daki's flower patterns being more of a 1920s design. If I remember right, Demon Slayer seems to be set in the 20s or so (at least from what the Western clothes look like, and the trains & cars we see at other points in the series). If so, then Daki is being super modern to her present era, & very trendy! I love that!

    In terms of manga featuring accurate wafuku, everyone should really check out Noragami by Adachitoka! The manga features everything from modern kimono to religious garb to historical wear since the story has flashbacks ranging back to the 900s. The authors have clearly done their research and put a lot of love into drawing the clothing, not to mention that the narrative spins a very interesting and nuanced take on kami and Shinto mythology in modern day. I'd love to see Billy talk about the wafuku in Noragami one of these days 👀✨

    Excellent. One of my moderators shared this in our Facebook group!
    InuYasha takes place in the 1540s. It was stated in the InuYasha Wide Edition #4. However Sesshoumaru was well and alive when InuYasha was born in the Kamakura period during the years of 1185-1333. Sesshoumaru's garment from the third movie during the Kamakura period is almost identical just different colors and patterns - And it's completely true it doesn't have furi. InuYasha and much like other characters within the series are wearing robes based on the suikan and Kariginu. The historical accuracies and inaccuracies are all over the place. But we can still learn a thing or two from this fiction series based on history. Absolutely love the video.

      Although it is influenced by China, it is a completely different kimono in terms of appearance and how to wear it. I wouldn't call this the Japanese version of Hanfu it's juuni hitoe not japanese version of hanfu.
      Juuni hitoe has many many layers and colors that are not found in Hanfu
      After Tang lost influence over Japan and abolished envoys to Tang(遣唐使) Japan decided to make a new kimono. it is a kimono redesigned by Japanese people under the influence of Hanfu. But not japanese version of hanfu

    Yuuko wearing a mix of western/Japanese styles is a big part of her character because she and Clow Reed were famous in the magic world for combining western and Eastern magic, Clow being half english-half Chinese and her magical partner-in-crime.
    As for sesshomaru the show is set in sengoku jedai, which would've been right in between muromachi-edo period. Being as he's many hundreds of years old, it makes sense he's dressed more old fashioned. The armor is likely Chinese inspired due to him & his father canonically hanging out "on the mainland" (which could be Korea but is probably china) plus he's a demon so like yeah, probably doesn't follow human fashion that much XD

    34:30 - Falling fabric is one of the worst things to animate. Typically, every piece of clothing needs to be tied to a piece of the animated body and then moves in exactly the same manner as that anchoring point. This however gets funky results if your clothing starts to get too far away from the actual body. Just think about it like... taping a ruler to your lower arm and move it around, turn the arm and... oh! the ruler just starts to stick out to the other side! No cloth would behave like that.
    To animate long sleeves, you'd need to not just define which anchor point certain parts of the clothes are attached to, you need to have software that allows to make the anchoring line to that anchor not be stiffly connected (as the ruler above) but hang from it in a certain fashion - like you'd hang a line with a weight. However, that is a *very* elaborate process, and easily quadruples the processing power needed.

    Thank you for the video! It was exciting to hear your input into the clothing designs! Especially the mix of kimono and western clothing elements.
    As far as Yuuko wearing Oiran/Tayu musubi, it could be because she's lazy and likes the easier way to tie it, or she likes the high style, or both.
    I still like the headcannon that Sesshoumaru and his father traveled in Asia, and wear some mix of things, especially if they are Foo Dogs. (ex. I think fire rats were supposedly from somewhere in mainland Asia).

    • @ChasehaWing
      @ChasehaWing ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's actually not. When he transforms, its clear his tail has very straight/ long fur, where the thing on his shoulder is super fuzzy and curls like a sheep hair. Also he uses it to trap Inuyasha once and it kind of gets longer than shorter, so it's a weapon (dog tails don't wrap around things like a snake).
      So it's an accessory/weapon of some kind. It it was otherwise, Inuyasha or any of Sesshomaru's other opponents might try to chop it off to cause pain.

    Speaking of mixing Western and Japanese, and later re-interpretations of historical clothing, I would love to see a video about the "Taisho Roman" style you see a lot in anime (and dating sims lol) because I like it, but all the research I've done has shown me no example of actual historical outfits mixing the 2 culture. In Taisho roman, you have girls with their hair only half-up, with a high collared shirt under a kimono, etc., while in the pictures I've found you see either women in complete kimono outfits, or "modern girls" wearing basically what trendy young women were wearing in Paris or New York.

    11:46 actually, a “concrete idea” is also a phrase used in English all the time, your wording was correct! I’m surprised to hear the exact same phrase is used in German, now I’m curious as to how this came to be lol.

    • @SilverDragonJay
      @SilverDragonJay ปีที่แล้ว

      well, old English is a Germanic language, so maybe there? Modern English is really a bastardization of old English (Germanic) and French. I'm no linguist though; It could also just be coincidence. As a native English speaker (of the American variety), I can second that "concrete idea" makes sense.

    This is a lovely video, thank you.
    I can't remember now where I read it (it might have been an interview with Neil Gaiman, actually) but apparently when they were animating Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki Hayao emphasised that Lady Eboshi's top layer is not a standard kimono, but a heavy man's coat that she styles like an uchikake. So your reading of it was pretty much perfect!

    We use concrete in English to say the same thing, not just as the material used to make sidewalk. You said it perfectly fine!! 😉

      @yahunnie7999 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought it was a parasite not his tail. I could be wrong it's been YEARS since I looked it up, but I'm pretty sure the info said it was a parasite and the same kind his father wore.

If you are planing on making another one of these could u add Komurasaki from One Piece? She is an Oiran as well and it would be interesting to get your view on her outfit.

    22:53 So true! And this goes for every piece of media as well. I had troubles making a cosplay from a videogame, because the dress was clearly not designed around how fabric works in reality.
    After working with awfully blurry screenshots, I was kinda dissapointed when I found HD images of the actual model, seeing there's no way it works like that, not a single seam to be seen that could help me a bit lol

    I think what you referred to as an obi is actually a dō (胴): torso protector (breastplate) - worn for kendo/ with a sash attached… so glad you talked about Sesshoumaru’s outfit 😄 he’s my favourite too. Keep up the good work!
