Good job seeing so quickly that he was not feeling good and acted on it. Horses are really sensitive but will not show quickly when they are not feeling good. About food, I wound want to advise to put the hay in nets called slowfeeders, it makes them taking way longer to eat which is better, also on the ground they will eat sanf with the hay wich can cause a deadly colic also. The bran mash, some horses really need to learn to eat it. In winter it is indeed nice for them to get a bit of water in for sure but be careful not to make it to hot. And about them living outside, my horses live year round outside and they only have shelter from the trees. My poney does not need a blanket at all there he make like your poney's a nice and thick coat. As long was they can stand somewhere where they stand totaly out of the rain or snow they will be perfectly fine. You can motivate them to go under the shelter to dry by feeding their hay inside 😉😁 My poney even does totally fine with just the trees as a cover, not ideal but I don't have a shelter outside yet and he does not like to be locked up inside. Also snow is not a problem at all for them. Blankets are only needed if they are ill, a medical condition or when they are full in training and are shaved. Those 2 poney's are lucky with good owners as you 2 are. Keep up the good work 😁😁
Hi He's colicky you should check the leaves in their fence . Some lives are poison to horses. Red maple ,oak leaves and acorns are deadly for horses. You need to check whats in their fence. Best wished ❤
We have a miniature pony and donkey. Ya gotta realize they don’t need a lot of treats and grain. Vet was checking for colic (gut sounds) and founder(heat in the feet). Both aren’t good. If you don’t have a salt block or loose salt…get some. Will help them want to drink. Minis get fat on air😂! Be careful with the grain too. They really don’t need it. If you want to give them some look for a low starch and sugar. No molasses. A good source of hay should be all they need. As long as they don’t gain more weight, I would think they are fine going into winter. You really don’t want colic which can cause twisted intestines. (The start to roll). Did vet mention worming them. Heavy worm infestation can cause colic too. They need to be wormed 2-3 times a year. Founder, they stand leaning back to get weight off their front feet or lay down. Try not to go down this road, it is a life long issue and painful for them. Just love on them with scratches!!!
It's "Founder" not Flounder. LOL ! So great to see you really trying to take care of your miniature horses. Hay should make up most of their diet. Here in Florida, we give them a salt sandwich to encourage them to drink more water. That's to prevent colic. They will not need blankets, but a waterproof turnout blanket will not let the water through. Do they have a salt block inside the shelter? Don't leave a salt block outside only because the weather will wash it away really quickly. If protected from the rain, a big salt block will last those two little guys more than a year. Horses are grazing animals and supposed to be eating little tiny amounts constantly. I suggest small hole hay nets to put the hay in so it takes them a long time to eat their hay ration. You could hang one in your shelter to protect it from the weather.
Horses can colic pretty easy from poor pasture, especially in sandy ground. Colic can cause founder. If they start rolling because of belly pain, they can twist their intestines. I always gave my horses a warm mash twice a month, just enough really warm water to wet the bran, If you can get rolled oats. Look up Colic & Founder. Rolled or crimped oats are easier for them to eat. You seem to have a really good vet. Owning horses is a really learning experience. 👍
Horses have delicate guts. Good job watching your boys. I used to put a tablespoon of molasses in a bucket of warm water to get my daughter’s Morgan mares to drink in cold weather. Horses don’t like to drink cold water in the winter & can colic from dehydration.
The illness is called FOUNDER. When the horse/pony over eats it causes problems in their hooves. Basically the hooves come apart. Blankets are okay. Horses/ponies really don't need to the blankets since they are living outside and have a good thick coat. Keeping them out of the wind/rain/snow is the best thing to do.
Horses grow the coat they need for the weather... Unless they get soaked, when the weather is very cold. Blankets cause problems. It keeps them from growing a proper coat. A blanket can even make them shed out their coats.
I seen others suggest a salt block. Definitely pick one up for them, the brown mineral block is better than the white one. IF you have low selenium in your area, then you should get a selenium block. A salt block will definitely up their water consumption. Something to put their hay in would be beneficial as well to keep their feed out of the sand. And to avoid sand colic. Y’all are doing great and learning loads. :)
That is so great that you took Cheif to the veterinarian as soon as you noticed he was not feeling well. You saved yourselves a lot of worry and aching heart. I get a kick at the way Pearl follows you around when you are tending to them. 🤣
Once a week, here in NW Fl we give a little beet pulp that's been soaked in water to help clear sand out of their gut. It helps prevent colic. I learned this from other horse owners who have done it for many years. I've been using a little beet pulp for 7 years now. No colic so far, thank God! I'm so pleased you alll are learning so much about horse ownership! You even know how to give your own shots already! Very good! It's really good to see Brandi out there helping with animal chores!
Good catch guys, noticing that Chief wasn’t his usual self. Speedy recovery Chief🐴 Funny how Eddy was checking him out for missing “bits”🤣 Take care & cheers 🐨🦘🥰
Maybe you need to fix there own feeding stall for the horses and train them to eat their food then they can be let out or feed them at night with the special food, pen them up in each of their stalls so one can't steal the others food and they can be safely tucked into bed. Just some ideas, I couldn't help but notice the dogs in the background I have always admired the shepherds and I think the little dog is just adorable the way she thinks she is the boss of them all and she is just as big as the rest of them, they just tickle me. God bless you all and take care of yourselves
Glad Chief got to the Vet. The weather in your area has been hard on the animals. Keep the Doss family in your prayers. It is hard for them loosing Fred.🙏🏻🙏🏻
The little horses are so cute. You are doing great with them. Please take those halters off when you turn them loose. They can get hung up or hurt really bad from the halter. 🐎🤠
I’ve always noticed how closely you watch your animals and when something’s wrong you always get on top of it. Kudos to you Dutch and Brandi!!! You’re good animal parents!!! ❤️
Gosh! Now I feel like I'm being critical of u guys! But I was always told to give a shot in the middle on the side of the neck. And use alcohol to sterilize the area love u guys!
LOL Castration in horses is called Gelded and Eddy is now a gelding. Belly ache I was worried he was starting to colic (can be fatal). Checking pulse in the legs means they were checking for founder/laminitis. Glad you caught the colic early before it could turn worse. If he starts to lay down and roll frequently get him up and walk him and not let him lay down again till you can get him to the vet again. Mineral oil will help some, you can also add a tiny bit of salt to the feed to encourage them to drink more water. You can feed straight oats for food. Put a salt/mineral block for horses in there with them. Guessing the shot is Bute or Banamine (I think Bute is a paste only if I remember correctly).
Bute can be in powder form as well. Banamine comes in liquid or paste and can be given orally or injected. I agree with the salt in the grain as well to get them to drink more.Salt or mineral blocks work as well.
I’m so glad you took Chief to get help, it was funny when you brought him back Eddy was checking to see if he was missing his junk 😂😂😂 hey just checking. Eddy has really settled down a lot but still stubborn. I’m so happy that I found your family, channel Take care, enjoy your day ❤️🙏👍🙏❤️
Add a salt/mineral block made for horses. That will make them drink more water. A blanket is only needed if you are showing the horse and you want to prevent hair growth. Healthy horses with a normal winter coat are good to about -20 degrees. Change a horses feed very slowly. Sudden changes will cause colic. Find an old cowboy in your area and become friends. They are full of useful information. Less water in the mash, make it more like oatmeal. You and Brandy will learn a lot but it won't happen overnight. Be patient and don't panic. I've been dealing with horses since about 1960 and still learn things when talking with knowledgeable, experienced horse people. God bless you and your family.
Bran mash is what you feed the ponies. Warm bran but less water so it’s a mash consistency. Plus oats in it. I used to make it in a flask to keep it warm and let it swell on the way to feed them. It’s all a learning curve, you care so much for your animals, they’re lucky to have you. 😊🏴
I’m so glad to see responsible animal owners that take their animals to the vet when in doubt. You guys are one of the few I now watch because you do what needs to be done👍🥰🙏
It's foundered. My first thought was a start of colic, which can fatal. Glad you are observant to his behaviors. Keep it up. That is one of the best traits of a good horseman
my horses live out 24/7 in Wisconsin winter no blankets with shelter’s , you can soak hay overnight it adds water and helps with sugar content. I always keep pain meds and mineral oil on hand, my rule is first give pain meds and if they are still uncomfortable call the vet.
Brandi they musher the better on feed. You are trying to get as much liquid in him. Also a pinch of Redmond salt helps with making them want to drink more
There's a mineral that's called Sand Clear. It's bit expensive but well worth the money. If I remember right you feed it foe 7 days in a row. But it clears the sand from his belly which causes Cheif's issues. You can get it at Tractor Supply or order it on line. It really does help clear the sand from their belly. And with all the sand you have I would invest in it for these giys.
Hey guys- use hay nets and keep the hay off the ground, out of the bare dirt . This will help keep the minis from inadvertently eating dirt with the hay and help reduce future colic- especially as it gets colder and they don’t drink as much water to flush it out… Your doing great with the minis- good call on the vet visit
Dutch, have you thought of putting a half door on the front of the horse shelter. Where you could partially close it n open up to help with the cold n snowy days . Can also use that shelter to treat mor feed each horse separately when needed.
They probably gave him some Bute which will just help him relax so his bowls can will relax. You could also walk him to help get things moving. He will probably have a lot of gas! Walk him then he won’t roll and twist his gut.!! You do an amazing job at watching your animals and noticing when things are a little off. Good for you!!!!! A horse’s temp comes out in his feet so if he’s in pain hos feet will be warm or hot. Cold water bath helps. Just run the hose water on his feet. In hot weather it helps to have a pond the horses can just stand in or a shallow tub with cold water will help them cook off.
My horses live in -40 with just a shelter no blankets unless they are old and can't keep condition through the winter. I'm in alberta canada, I'm sure your horses will do awesome!
Grandpa Adler Farms put some kind of water heaters in his water troughs and it helps the water not to freeze as well as makes them drink more water.he ran extention cords to plug them all up and he says it works really well. Just a suggestion it might help y'all. ❤
Perhaps you should spend a little time watching Chad’s videos. He loves and cares for his animals. Plus, he does not video everything he does every day. My Mom always said “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”!! Wise advice!!
you may not be horse experts! but your loving responsible owners that do the right thing when it comes to your pets..🙂 the rest you will learn as you go...
So glad you guys were quick to notice Chief wasn't feeling good. Eddie was so worried about Chief after he came back from the vet! Lol!! That was funny!
Don't put the hay on the ground that can cause colic as well keep all food of the ground at all times, As for rugs you can get weather proof ones , so that they don't get wet, Love you guys HERVEY BAY QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA
Horses can survive below freezing temperatures. They get a heavy winter coat and when it gets cold, their hair stands up and creates insulation. If you blanket them, the blanket keeps their hair dry down and doesn't allow the hair to insulate them. Think about all the wild horses around the world. They are not bothered by super cold weather. The shelter that you built for them is sufficient. Also, colic in horses is very dangerous. If they get so painful that they start rolling violently, they can twist their intestines and surgery may not work, so if you notice them biting at their sides and rolling violently, you will need to walk them and keep them from rolling.
common problem which you will notice if their poop seems dry. Something to watch for when temperatures change. Horses can colic very easily and go down quickly if you don't catch it right away.. So check their poop every day. Any change in the weather or food can cause a a horse colic. If you have freezes where you are you should invest in a water heater for the horses. This will keep them drinking thru the winter. Good job getting him to the vet!!!
Most people don’t know that horses have a one way system. They can’t belch or vomit. What goes in the mouth must come out the butt. Hence why colic is such a killer. They feel that belly ache and they roll which can cause a gastric torsion which usually needs surgery to correct if you get to them in time. I wasn’t so lucky. My mare had a two month old colt and had to be put down due to a torsion from colic. Post Morten revealed scar tissue that caused colic. Vet was not sure why she had scar tissue. Glad y’all are good pet parents and caught it early. Ya really have to be careful what ya feed. Ruminants like cows can eat anything. A little mold on the hay or feed typically won’t bother a cow but a horse ya really have to be careful. Not being critical just informative from a long time horse lover/owner✝️🙏🏼❤️
Great job taking Chief to get checked out. I think Y'all take good care of all your animals. Y'all take better care of your animals than some people take care of their kids. Can't wait to see the masonry heater up and running. Love following Y'all living your dream. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.
So happy y’all took Chief to the vet. You did great Brandi !!! You can never just let it roll off your shoulder. Which y’all are Amazing animal lovers. You take great care of your Fur Babies. I feel so sorry for Chad Doss and his family losing Fred. I cried like a baby watching his video. Trying to get him out of the water. Say a prayer for him please. 🙏 Hopefully Chief will get better soon and Eddie was being so rough to him at first. Maybe upset that Chief didn’t have the same procedure he did. ButtHead. LoL Love your videos and Family Many Blessings to y’all 🎚 Nora🥀
Glad you got Chief to vet & it was nothing serious. I love the way you & Brandi take care of all your critters! They are so lucky to have you as their family! God Bless see you next time👋❤🙏✌😉
Great to take Chief to the vet. Glad it was something fairly simple. I know you love the animals and care for them to the best of your ability. The drought sure made it rough... a good idea - plant some hearty, healthy grass in an area and let the horses into that area next year after it grows.
Just a suggestion but it might help to take him for walks, like you would a dog, and get him more exercise. 😉And it will make him a better pet. I Used to put vegetable oil in my horse's feed it also makes them have a beautiful coats And helps them poop well.🤭
you are becoming quite knowledgable about horses Congrats to you both. as for blankets,, I learned from GOOD SIMPLE LIVING (they have 2 horses and learneed from other horse owners, that rhe horses need to grow their own hair blankets to protect against cold. they really don't need them unless it gets BELOW freezing..
You may have to make stalls and lock them up where they can only eat out of their own feed buckets. Once they eat turn them loose. Or feed them at night and leave them in a stall all night and release them during the day after breakfast.
You two are such great animal owners you always seem to know when something is wrong with one of them. I will say prayers for Chief that he's feeling better soon! Eddy sure isn't food motivated. God Bless ❤
I'm glad your Vet figured Chiefs Belly issue out 🐦. Don't be offended Brandi your doing your Best with what you know 👍. You might try a Salt lick which would make them thirsty? JO JO IN VT 😆💕🍁💨
Humans don't do well either when constipated. Hope you get that mineral oil in him right fast.👍👍Looking forward to your first masonry burn! Thank you for sharing
You need to tie horses to the trailer when you are taking them any where. It helps them to keep their balance especially with a stock trailer. All I have ever owned was stock trailers
A trailer tie is an option too. If you use a trailer tie, clip the quick release snap to the trailer and the regular clip end to the horse’s halter. If something goes wrong, it’s easier to detach the part connected to the trailer hook than the end connected to a panicked animal.
You should consider erecting 3 small walls as feeding bays. Only wide enough for one horse. No roof, just walls to separate them. 3 walls so each horse has it's own space. You're doing great so far!
Brandi seems to be enjoying herself out there on the new property and it's so heartwarming. To bad you can' find something to keep Eddy busy so you can just pet him to get used to it. Yes taking your animals to the vet is prevention against something worse happening. Good job! Thanks and Love y'all.
Glad you got him to the vet the drought is rough as we saw with Adlers farm felt bad there, God bless yas, you take such good care of your animals, we know you love them or you wouldn't have them have a blessed night, God bless yas
We never fed our horses corn. We fed sweet feed with oats added. More oats added in the winter time because sweet feed will turn into a brick when cold.
Sean and Brandi, you guys did the right thing but like everyone else says colic is very dangerous for a horse they get to where they're lying down & get to rolling around they'll twist their intestines which is not a good thing. Hope Chief gets to feeling better. Have an awesome weekend guys
Once many years ago, my daughter made me a horse person. Lots of lessons learned - mostly from young teenage girls. Young ladies raised with horses know way more than most people. The right kind of feed is extremely important. I learned that each horse does better if they have their own stall for sleeping and feeding. Warm water is critical in the colder months and the larger their free area the better off that they are.
At the ponies shelter, you could build a small hay/feed room onto it.. I would put a corner hay rack in shelter( high enough so they can reach it as the hay falls to the bottom as they eat). Also I would have an opening from feed room to hay rack to just fill hay rack easy in ugly weather. You can put troughs in shelter too. That way their food stays dry in ugly weather.
Hi guys. It would be better to just add the oats to the bran mash. That’s what we did with the race horses. Crimped oats are best, the outer husk is crushed and less of the oats will pass undigested. They will get more nutrients with crimped oats. You can buy crimped oats with molasses already on them if they are available in your area. You can also throw a small amount of mineral in there as well. The mash did look a bit too soupy. Glad you took him to the vet before he got colic and possibly founder. You guys will get the hang of it, you’re doing great and are very attentive which is all you can do!
I know nothing about horses. Well done knowing an unusual behavior and getting it checked. I do know it can't be cheap running a horse to the vet. You are paying attention and learning a lot and you care, that,s what's important. Love the sounds of fall, rustling leaves. Continued success to all.
Oh my haven’t watched the entire video yet but the Walkers have had a sickness with one of their calves and Chad Highland Fred passed away. and now Chief. 🙏🙏🙏
It's customary when a horse to re enter after coming back for a stall mate to check them out if they can. Eddie was just making sure Chief was Chief. With a bit of observation, checking Chief out won!t last. It's probably better to feed them most of their feed where they can only get to their own. Also, that way you'll definitely know of their intake and it's always better to know that individually especially to be sure if they go to the vet again, unless you watch everything they eat. You're doing great! Eddie is a good horse too! They are bonded and miss each other, when the other is gone, so sweet.
First safety said you should never keep horses or ponies in the pasture with nylon halters on . If they get caught on something they will break their neck. If you want to leave halters on, make sure that they are leather or breakaway.
Good job seeing so quickly that he was not feeling good and acted on it. Horses are really sensitive but will not show quickly when they are not feeling good.

Hi
He's colicky you should check the leaves in their fence . Some lives are poison to horses. Red maple ,oak leaves and acorns are deadly for horses. You need to check whats in their fence. Best wished ❤
Horses have 11 layers of skin. If you notice when it snows, the snow builds up and doesn’t melt. Pretty amazing.

Hey guys horse male horses are gelding, when they are neutered its called gelded. Love the videos and the horses.
Glad all of you animals are doing good and everything checked out well at the vet.

Brandi they musher the better on feed. You are trying to get as much liquid in him. Also a pinch of Redmond salt helps with making them want to drink more
Those horses are so funny! Eddy just knew Chief was coming back without parts! 😂🤣😂🤣
Should get 2 hay nets to keep the hay off the ground
Glad Cheif will be ok. Hope he continues to do well. Much love to the two of you and the girls from my family. Have a great Weekend.
You should ask the vet regarding tree/leaves that can be toxic to them as well...glad you to him in.
This will help keep the minis from inadvertently eating dirt with the hay and help reduce future colic- especially as it gets colder and they don’t drink as much water to flush it out…
Your doing great with the minis- good call on the vet visit
Glad Chief is okay and yall caught it early 💕💕
Hope Chief feels better soon. Glad the vet could help. 💗🍁🦃🌾💕🍂
@@maryelmaguire3161 Chad gives his animals fresh water, he just doesn't always show it on his videos.
I think HIDDEN HEIGHTS FARM HAS A WATER HEATER TOO.
@@maryelmaguire3161yeah such a shame, he only wants the animals for content not what's best for his animals. 😤
Perhaps you should spend a little time watching Chad’s videos. He loves and cares for his animals. Plus, he does not video everything he does every day. My Mom always said “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”!! Wise advice!!
@@maryelmaguire3161 Chad changes the water every day at the farm. He has waterlines to the alpacas and the cows n donkeys.
Good to recognize Chief wasn’t feeling well. Now to follow vets suggestions. Many horse follows offer suggestions too.
Glad to hear Chief is doing better. Glad you caught it. You definitely don't want him to get colic. Minis are prone to get it. Great hippophiles
you may not be horse experts! but your loving responsible owners that do the right thing when it comes to your pets..🙂 the rest you will learn as you go...
Sean, Thank you for your service to our country. 🇱🇷
I'm So Happy Chief is feeling better!! Have a Great Weekend!! 😊❤🌹
I always fed my horse oats. Apples are something else my horse liked and kept him from being foundered.
So glad you guys were quick to notice Chief wasn't feeling good. Eddie was so worried about Chief after he came back from the vet! Lol!! That was funny!
Don't put the hay on the ground that can cause colic as well keep all food of the ground at all times,
As for rugs you can get weather proof ones , so that they don't get wet,
Love you guys HERVEY BAY QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA
Hopefully Chief will get better soon and Eddie was being so rough to him at first. Maybe upset that Chief didn’t have the same procedure he did. ButtHead. LoL
Love your videos and Family
Many Blessings to y’all 🎚
Nora🥀
I Used to put vegetable oil in my horse's feed it also makes them have a beautiful coats And helps them poop well.🤭
Hi guys Brandy you are doing a great job with the animals giving them their medication you are doing a girl and you are taking great care of them. 😇❤❤
you are becoming quite knowledgable about horses Congrats to you both. as for blankets,, I learned from GOOD SIMPLE LIVING (they have 2 horses and learneed from other horse owners, that rhe horses need to grow their own hair blankets to protect against cold. they really don't need them unless it gets BELOW freezing..
I'm so glad you took him in, you are great animal parents.
I’m so glad chief is ok
If you get a hay rack put it in the barn this will keep the hay dry and less dusty
God Bless ❤
Give them a water trough and put a heater in it the water will stay warm enough for them to drink, cold water can make them collic
Thanks so much Dutch. 🙏
So glad that you all act when something is out of the ordinary! Love the care you show and give!
Brandi seems to be enjoying herself out there on the new property and it's so heartwarming.
To bad you can' find something to keep Eddy busy so you can just pet him to get used to it. Yes taking your animals to the vet is prevention against something worse happening. Good job! Thanks and Love y'all.
Glad y’all caught it in time!
Glad you got him to the vet the drought is rough as we saw with Adlers farm felt bad there, God bless yas, you take such good care of your animals, we know you love them or you wouldn't have them have a blessed night, God bless yas
You can get a bucket heater which will keep the water from freezing then they will drink more.
Warm water is critical in the colder months and the larger their free area the better off that they are.
just a note it it gets cold outside the water will freeze and you will need a water heater for the water trough.
I like it that your wife is not afraid to help you. She seems like a nice lady and a good wife. Enjoy watching you guys
You should be adding water to the pigs feed too. Not soupy. Just moist.
