  • Our Miniature Horse Had Surgery
    Today was a sad day on the homestead for Eddie. It was time to take him in to get castrated so we don't have two studs on the homestead. Miniature animals may be small but they are just has tough as the big ones. Building a homestead from scratch.

    I still find it funny that you have to load up your large animals and take them to the Vet. Here in Pennsylvania our large animal Vets come right to the farm. They don’t even have offices except their truck .

    I noticed right away when the vet got Eddie to lay down that his testicles hadn’t dropped. I don’t know if it’s the same with horses but I had a little dog with undescended testicles and my vet said it could cause testicular cancer if I didn’t have him neutered.

    Brandi, this is for you. You need to be in there every day, probably twice a day, working with those horses. You wanted them for pets, and now you have to put in the work to make them pets. Don't be afraid of them, you need to take control and show them what you expect from them. They will come around, but it takes work every day....even if its just 15 or 20 minutes. Halter them, brush them, walk them, and teach them manners. You will be so happy in the end if you put in the work to make them great family pets.

    For the first time watching your video I was like 😤😤😲😲🙄
    Leave halter in and have a bit of rope hanging if it is it's easier to catch him , until he gets used to it,
    Put rope behind there butt to push them along
    Never pull them
    You can also get an anti raring but for them to stop him from rare up, .
    Just watch some utube videos .keep close to there butt so that they can't kick you
    Dont show fear as they know it
    Dnt swim rope around in the air as it frightened them
    Tap it around his legs rub it over his body , face ,et so that they get used to it

  • @karenmrugacz8764
    @karenmrugacz8764 ปีที่แล้ว

    Halters are put on to lead them m when up close work , like going thru gate or into trailer or stable hold lead in your main hand n then hold the halter at the horses cheek n close to your body comfortably. Then going thru gate would have been almost as easy as going thru alone !!! It also can take a few months for him to gentle down ...watch daily n if you got good memory of past habits you will see the subtil changes n then over time some of those get more pronounced !!!

  • @pennywillis8895
    @pennywillis8895 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    🇦🇺You need a loading crush chute that you can herd the pony into closing the gate behind him. Will make taking animals to the vet easier. You could also pull the trailer up to it and feed the animals in or near the trailer.

    • @dakotawinds9291
      @dakotawinds9291 ปีที่แล้ว

      nah now gelded they will be able to work and get him halter broke much easier and better. Will take about a month for all the testosterones to drop in his body. They did good getting him into a trailer for not being halter broke. Need to tie him to something very sturdy with a quick release knot and stay by in case he gets himself into trouble, make him stand there for 30 min to teach himself to give into the lead rope and halter pressure till he stands quietly. All of our horses are trained to stand tied that way and to stand ground tied without hobbles. Be sure to tie him up higher so he can not drop his head down and get a foot in the lead rope causing an accident.

    To get Eddie to accept haltering catch him and tie a rope around his neck. Have some treats on hand and take the halter off, rub him with the halter and praise him. Slip the halter on him and give him a treat and praise him. Repeat this procedure until he accepts the halter without fighting you.
    I have used this method on horses that have been abused and it works.

      Most of their TH-cam family really love Dutch and his 4 girls. When many of us post it is because we care. These folks are like family to thousands of people. It might appear that we are critical but many of their followers are experienced in whatever project they are working on at the time. What they did with Eddie was difficult to watch but anyone who has owned horses understands how important gelding a stallion for safety’s sake is. Most male animals…..bulls, boors, roster’s, Tom cats, dogs, buck deer, bears, etc can be aggressive. They did the difficult but right thing with Eddie. We owned horses but sold them when our children went to college, as both of us can no longer ride. Putting hints on their page isNOT criticism but caring.❤️❤️❤️

    It’s so good to see you had Eddie cut(castrated). And seeing that he was a cryptorchid..that’s what it’s called when they retain one or both testicles..it was extremely important he got done. Cryps can get very mean and they pass that on to their male foals if used for breeding. Pats on the back guys. :)

    Wow a double cryptorchid, a real challenge for the vet to locate the testicles in the abdominal cavity. Healing time is important for the new gelding, you don’t want him to herniate. It’s great you had him gelded, as being a cryptorchid is hereditary (not just in horses by the way). For those not aware it takes a good month for the testosterone levels to diminish, which if the male is with a female, breeding could occur with a viable pregnancy. Good luck with the training of these 2 mini’s. Please remember - over generations small horses were bred to smaller horses, creating the mini - they were a novelty for royalty. Although physically they are smaller, they have the brain of a horse - meaning they think they are 800+ pounds & without proper training - for them & your family - they can run all over you. They may only weigh in at 250+/-, but in their mind, they are the top of the pyramid. With proper training they will learn to respect you, but as with any equine, always be aware of where they are & what they are up to. I wish you much success with them.
