    One thing you all need to learn right away! Only one person can be the boss. You got to many people trying to be! I'm almost 70 years old and have been around ponies since I was about 12 years old. There are differences between them and horses, ponies have a different temperament and sturdier builds than most full-size horses!! Ponies are more stubborn than horses! If they don't want to do something, they will not do it. They are harder to train too. Good luck, you will need it!

      Changing their names mite not work if the pony doesn't like what you want for them !!! Keep hoofs trimmed n one person fe ds n trains n is there when others come to pet till pony accepts the other person as part of human herd (sorta) to make them move use rope around rump as well as lead rope or smack (hard pat) on rump ,watch fir kick ,sometimes !!! Feed with flat hand n all fingers close together !!!

      I dont know these little animals are going thru so much change all at once. I think i would leave their names as they were just to give them a little bit of familiarity left in their lives... Just my thoughts .... I tey to keep as much of the "normal" as possible when moving an animal.

    Horses have to see the dentist and need their hooves trimmed about every 6 weeks. Stallions can be dangerous especially with a mare in the same pen with them or near them. Horses are a blast to have. I had one when I was a teenager and fell in love with big horses. Congratulations on the ponies.

      Let Eddie do what he is doing at the moment. He will get use to following. Then put a short leash on him but do not hold it, but continue to let him follow behind Chief for another week or so. Then one day when you both snap on a leash on both don't let go and continue to walk with him. Just get him in a routine. Eventually you will be able to walk both out of the pen. But for the first few times put the dogs up but walk them by the dogs in their pens and they will get use to each other. You guys might look into getting a visiting vet come out and check all your animals about every six months. And start routine check-ups. And start looking for a ferrier for the horses feet. Best thing you guys can do is take the girls to a "book store" I did and let your girls actually look for books to read and learn about horses. Could be a big help for you guys in learning how to take care of the four legged critters. My daughter and I had fun learning together that way. And always h ad the books as backup when needed.

      I worked with stallions large and small. Training was a very important tool! In the spring when the mares first come into heat only the trainer worked with the stallions. My mini was a stallion and never a problem although he could talk up a storm around the girls! He was a hoot!

    I'm a horse trainer and I use pressure and release training. To halter train them, put the lead on and just put a small amount of pressure on the lead and wait. When the pony makes any sign of releasing the pressure, immediately let off on the pressure and praise him. Use a lot of patience, Eddie's not being stubborn, he just hasn't been halter trained.
    Keep this up. When he backs up, go with him. If you put too much pressure on him he is liable to rear up and fall over backwards. They can crush their withers if they land on something.
    You could have one person lead Chief around and have someone else lead Eddy to help him figure out that he's supposed to go with you.
    I would take their halters off because leaving halters on them is very dangerous.

    Since you are new to horses/minis, I would suggest that you get some help with learning what to do. Maybe your girls could join a local club. It’s a lot of fun. I have both horses and a miniature horse and there is a lot to learn. They are small so it gives you a sense that you can’t get hurt, but you can. You will have fun with them if you learn about them without getting hurt. Best to geld both of them. Driving them is a lot of fun. Good luck and take it slow. Take care of how much you feed them. They put weight on very very fast. No big round bale. As far as shelter, they need to be protected. A small 3-sided shed would be good. TH-cam has lots of videos and would be a good place to start, and Facebook has lots of groups on miniature horses. Enjoy!

  • @franchesdun

    You may need horse sun tan lotion for his pink nose. Pick their hooves out every couple of days, so a rock does not get lodged on their hooves. It will also prevent, stone bruises and/or abscess. Tie them to a strong post with a little feed in a bucket and brush them.

    • @TheCraftydevilSpeaks
      @TheCraftydevilSpeaks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes, put up 2 posts not one. Cross ties will prevent them from spinning around while grooming. Place the posts near the fence so you can hang a hay bag on the fence. They’ll stay distracted eating while you groom them and they can get used to you faster. Grooming daily and having a regular daily routine will eliminate a lot of their fears. Handle each foot daily by running your hand down their leg first. Clean out their hooves and check their condition every day. Get them used to coming when you call them and walk them on a lead shank regularly. The cross ties and handling them daily will also make the blacksmith and vet jobs easier when they need to tend them. Not doing these routine things all the time will make them wild and hard to control. Especially ponies, they can be very stubborn, mean and bully you if you leave them on their own too much.

Horses are prone to collic. They have to be wormed monthly, . I would suggest reading all you can they are different than large breeds. But are trained for basics the same. And be consistent with the training. They do need a shelter in cold snow or ice . I'm in. Tex a little far I hope this helps love all of you have fun. God. Bless

    Thank you for taking out the braids, especially in the tail. They need their tails to combat flies. You are correct, your girls are too big to ride the mini horses. If you have quality hay, you do not need to feed them any grain. However, if you want to bucket train them, get the lowest protein and lowest fat feed you can find. (read the feed tags) You only need to give them a handful. IF YOU OVER FEED GRAIN, THEY COULD GET FOUNDER (SORE FEET) that could be so bad they would have to be put down. Especially watch Chief's weight. He's looking a little on the chunky side.
    Eddie does not know how to lead properly. It's easy enough to do. Look up "pressure and release".
    How's the hunt for a farrier going? Feet need to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

    • @TheCraftydevilSpeaks
      @TheCraftydevilSpeaks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They also get too fat fast! I wouldn’t feed the lowest quality grain especially in winter when they need more nutrients to keep their body warm but they don’t need top quality unless you get a female that’s pregnant. Avoid alfalfa it’s too rich and can give them diarrhea

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheCraftydevilSpeaks Where they are, they don't need to worry about it getting too cold for them. All they need to keep warm is hay, and it doesn't even need to be high quality hay. That, and a place to get out of any cold rain. The ONLY reason I would even be offering mini's grain would be to bucket train them. And literally, ONLY a handful.

    With horses, when you reach for their forehead just above their eyes like that they throw their head up because they cannot see your hand so they think they’re being attacked from above so to speak. I always approach one side or the other and hold your hand down low so they can reach for it with their nose and smell it and decide whether or not they’re friends. Just don’t reach for their foreheads from up in front; that is not good. When leading a horse you never stand i😢n front of it, and pull ,you stand beside side their shoulder an urge him forward as you move forward. take The end of your halter rope,😮 run it around behind his haunches under his tail and lower, and back up through the ring on his halter then when you push them forward a little with the side of his halter you put a little foreward pressure behind him and horses naturally move away from pressure. If you need any more pearls of wisdom just ask me. Ha ha ha. And by the way just in case you don’t know horses have to be shown everything twice once on each side because each eye has to see the same thing for it to register in their brain. If you walk a horse by something scary and work with them a little bit until they’re not scared anymore but the next time you walk by the same thing if their opposite side is facing it they don’t think they’ve seen it before and they’re scared all over again so always introduce them to every new thing twice once from each direction. You are welcome, lol

    Horses, mini or full size, take a lot of WORK. As another commenter said, vets for shots, worming, teeth floating, farriers for hoof care, certain types of supplements and feed so they don't founder, develop laminitis, colic, etc. Plus daily work to tame and train... I'm not sure you know what you've gotten yourselves into. Plus, it looks like Chief is a stallion, I couldn't tell about Eddy. You could have temperament problems with a stallion, even a small one. Horses shouldn't be lawn ornaments. They are sensitive, emotional animals that behave certain ways due to their instincts.
    I generally approve of most of your videos and feel you do everything possible to set yourselves and your animals up for success. I'm just not feeling positive about this move. Prove me wrong, please. Watch "the farm on route 66" also "Think like a horse ". Farm on route 66 rehabs and trains horses, donkeys from the Navajo reservation and has good success with starting and finishing horses and donkeys. He doesn't have luxury infrastructure but uses what he has effectively. His whole family gets in on it.

      We raised horses for years. Shots, worming and just about everything else can be done by you w/o taking to a vet. You mentioned Chief was 1½yrs old and Eddy was just a year old. That's a big difference & training him with the halter & lead while he's walking with Chief and eventually leading him into the lead position etc will help build his confidence.
      Think positive & don't listen to the naysayers. Yes, you should feed with the open hand-palm up for things like sugar cubes, hay cubes etc but carrots & apples, hay & grass can be fed with you giving them the biggest portion in front of your hand so when they're nibbling it down you can release the rest from your hand.
      You're used to worming, shots etc with the pigs, goats & sheep so you have the right knowledge already!!

    Consider better fencing, panels can be dangerous for any type of Equine. When pawing near it they could get a hoof caught. Putting up a fence like you have for the pigs is better. They are cute but can be more tempermental than a large horse. Training seems to be needed so have fun and learn with the little ones. Thanks for sharing Also be aware of flattening of ears, that's a sign of possible kicking out at you or biting. Most pawing takes place by the gate and feeding station. They are very impatient when they know it’s feeding time and will paw the ground to let you know the want their grain. Avoid the sweets too. Use Cheerios and apple slices as rewards for good behavior and don’t feed them treats in between. They are easily spoiled

Eddie is probably scared like he's just been weaned. It is okay to pop him on the nose if you get nipped. Are they both stallions? You might want to castrate one before you get a mare. Can't wait to see your new animal adventures! 🙂

    Congratulations this maybe the biggest advantage you've entered too yet. Horses have a very delicate digestive system. Colic is easy to get and can be deadly. Minis can founder easy and some have hip problems. If you have any horse care seminars in your area it can be very helpful.
    Their beautiful 😍.
    Teaching that baby to lead , get a longer lead rope and bring it around behind the tail and back up the other side it will move him forward..
    The pink nose and no black eyeliner around the eyes will sunburn. He will need lots of shade.
    Teff hay will be your best friend. It's the lowest in sugars.

    When I would lead my horses I would hold the lead rope close to the halter. I would steer them where I wanted them to go. I always let them know I was the boss. When they act up I would walk in tight circles until they understood. Do this daily...then tie to post and brush. They will learn to trust you. Trick is daily.

      True. Always hold the lead shank close to their head and stand to the left side of them at all times. This way you can steer them to where you want them to go. never give them their head, make it known your the leader of the herd (the boss) also the closer you stay to their body, they can’t kick you. When they bite, jerk the lead shank firmly and sternly tell them NO BITING. They’re smart, they’ll get the message. Lead shank chain, should be laced through the side and up over the nose and clipped on the opposite side. When you need to control them the chain over the nose smarts. It’s not cruel, and once they learn the rules, you won’t have to enforce them so much and they actually will respect you more.

    Found early on that the best way to get them to come to you and follow you is by bucket training them. Put a little grain in a bucket and they will come to you or follow you wherever you take the bucket. I had a Mini donkey and a 39" Shetland pony and learned the bucket training when they got out and I had to go over a mile to get them back home. Good Luck and the Girls have a lot to learn with maintaining and taking care of the Ponies.

    You all need to get trained on horsemanshp, horse management and feed/care. The blue eyed needs a shelter to get out of the sun or you will be dealing with health issues. With all the animals you already maintain horses/ponies need a totally different care. Halters need to come off and shouldn't be a full time part of there wear. You will need a Farrier to maintain their hooves health. This coming from a Horse Owner. Sad to see you put the Cart before the Horse.

Turn Eddie to the side if he locks up and won't go forward and make a circle. Get Chief a fly mask that will help shade his eyes, blue eyed white horses can slowly lose sight from being light eyed and the reflection of white on his face.

    If you get a longer rope and make a big loop to go around Eddies hind end and put the other end through his halter and pull on that rope, you won't be pulling on his head when you want to lead him. The pulling on his head is what makes him fight the halter. I've trained many horses to lead that way.

  • @joycegorton9434

    Try putting leads on both of them and walk them together, with the one walking Eddie following the one walking Chief. As he gets used to it then you can try waking them side by side and then try getting him to walk in front of Chief. Getting them to walk side by side would also work if you wanted to have them harnessed together pulling a cart. Also watch your feet if they step on your foot it will hurt.
