    R6 mkII paired with the 35mm 1.8 is a beast for convention/tradeshow video. Booth interviews, testimonials, insane b-roll, perfect size for even smaller gimbals. Reliable

    What a lot of people miss on the R5 and R6 MK1 is the power button is a known failure point, the internal switch mech snaps and that's why they've changed it on the R6mkii to a less often used video/stills switch and moved the power over under the mode dial.
    Also the mode dial on the R5 is plastic, on the original R it was metal. The R5 mode dial is known to snap inside the mechanism, sometimes with use, often if you carry the body on a strap my your side and it just gets the right knock the thin plastic let's go, it's not the best on a £4k plus body.
    The R5 mkii will have a different mode dial and power switch.
    I love all the R series and they will only get better and hopefully the mode dial and power switches will be improved

    I've been happily in the Canon DSLR camp for years. I can't imagine ever getting rid of my 7D2 or 1DX3, and I still get a lot of good use from my old 20D and even my 20-year-old 300D. As a result I'd really never considered moving to mirrorless. However, knowing that the Canon EF>RF adapter would allow me to keep using my favorite Canon glass has made it a viable option after all. After quite a lot of thinking, reading, and watching YT reviews, I've decided that the R6 Mk II is going to be the next addition to my kit, probably some time in the new year. I think it's going to be a very nice piece of equipment.

    I did upgrade to the 6mii, even after watching a number of these comparison video's.... After 2 weeks, for the shooting I do, the Mark ii is a significant upgrade... I shoot sports and landscapes. In shooting sports, the focus is much faster and is better at staying on the subject. Same lens for both cameras Canon 70-200 2.6 L mii, Canon 100-400 L 4.5-5.6 mii, 24-70 2.8 mii... In my use case, the mii is a major upgrade...

    I've been so torn on whether to switch to the R6 II from my R5. The improved AF, better low light, and the oversampled 4K60 on the R6 II makes me want to switch. However, the R5 overall has a better package with the 4K120, better codecs, and higher MP. I guess the R5 would still be the better choice since you can use the Crop mode for 4K 60 to get the best image. I just wish it didn't have that record limit. The struggle is real.

    I still find the R5 being better of both for video - it just looks cleaner than R6 and R6 mk2. I've managed to wreck the R5 so I've borrowed the 6 mk2 for a few days and I'm definitely getting the R5 again. I was thinking of the R5C but it's a tad too bulky for run and gun plus the battery life would be an issue down the line.
    Great content Josh, love you in-depth vids!

    I can't wait to supplement my r5 with an r5 mk ii. Right now I use the eos rp as a second body (awful video, great photos). The r5 makes gorgeous video and photos so it sucks that I can't use it for both at the same time. Flipping back and forth sacrifices those special moments that you want both video and photos. I would love to have a dedicated r5 for video for a second shooter while I use the other r5 for photography. I was almost ready to put down money for a second r5 but hearing that the r52 isnt that far away, I can wait.

    Hey Josh: just as a side note, I was in Tascam site and with their xlr adapter it does work on the new hot shoes. HOWEVER, it also come with a dummy shoe adapter allowing you to use the 3.5 mm mic port on the camera. So you can use xlr inputs on any camera. That’s an Awsome advantage.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are technically correct, but that's more of advantage of say the Tascam unit vs the Sony XLR-K3M. Using it in that fashion doesn't utilize the benefits of the Tascam unit. You have to supply it's own power (usually being supplied from the camera) and you also are using two pre-amps instead of one (giving you a less clean signal). You can do that with any small pre-amp/recorder like a Zoom.

      @JonathanAyers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Josh Sattin - I was hoping for a smidge more photo, but I know that's not your thing.
      Something I found interesting is that you continually say more megapixels crammed into a certain size, making for a cleaner video and less noise by making the noise smaller. This while (basically) everyone compares the R5 to cameras like the R6 and others claiming when looking at the image at 100%, the lesser megapixel camera wins the High ISO test. Which I've never understood because if you take a 45mp camera and print a 30x40" print and you take a 20-24mp camera and print a 30x40" image, which one will have less noise? To me, that's really the question and something I actually just saw from Tony Northrups channel. To me, everyone but you two are not lying, but not being completely accurate either. If that makes sense.
      Great video. I think this confirms my want for the R5. I believe that with my need for photography and reference for internal recording, it's going to suit me better.
      Great video. Just realized I wasn't subbed despite binge watching your content over the past few days lol so I fixed that. Have a blessed day, sir.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I just don't do any photography so I don't pretend to talk about it. As you said, not my thing. So, what I state is only really about video. Your questions are completely valid and this is complicated.
      The old school thought is that lower megapixel sensors are better in low light because each pixel is larger thus gathering more light. Many people continue to preach this. I see it all of the time. I have personally not always found this to be true at every ISO. Also every sensor is just made differently so its tough to compare a low MP sensor to a high MP sensor that are made the same way. Some sensors are just noisier. Also, dual base/sensitivity circuits and in-camera noise reduction play a big part in low light performance. We often don't know how the noise reduction is handled in camera.
      But, what I have found is that the cameras that oversample their image from a higher resolution have less noise at a given ISO. Something about the oversampling makes the noise finer and overall the image looks cleaner. If you look at the A74 vs A7S3/FX3, the A74 is remarkably cleaner at every ISO up until ISO 12,800. I hope that clarifies a few things. You are asking the right questions. If you'd like to see that comparison, check it out here: th-cam.com/video/u00WB58Q5s0/w-d-xo.html

      That would be a fun comparison but I unfortunately don't have an A7S3. I can probably sum it up for you. A7S3 is just a better overall video camera, more dynamic range, 4K120, no overheating. More megapixels for photography on the R6II. It also just comes down to lenses and preferences. R6II is more of a hybrid camera.

    Hello Josh , thanks for the video. I now have both of these cameras. Sold my R6 and my A7IV with all my Sony except the 200-600. I'm a hybrid shooter for family videos and photos. Question: is there any quality difference on R5 between UHD vs DCI. I shot UHD and convert to 2:1 video aspect ratio so slightly more black bars than DCI. So is there any reason for me to record DCI ? Any quality benefit. I also enjoy the dials on the R6 compared to the mode system on the R5. I noticed the Audio in auto mode is much cleaner and louder on the R6Mk2 vs the R5. Congrats on the sponsor squarespace.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. I didn't directly compare the UHD and DCI, but I assume they would be pretty much the same. I also didn't check the field of view. In most cameras the field of view is just wider with DCI, the camera will crop off the edges to give you the UHD image. There are some Sony cameras (and probably others) that do this the other way around, which is weird. I would chose the recording format that is closest to your final output so there is less cropping. If you are converting to 2:1 then 17:9 (DCI) is closer than 16:9 (UHD).

    Just received my R6II but am exchanging it for a Sony A7IV. 😢 I thought I would get around non-third party lenses with EF lenses with adapter. However holding that in my hand it became evident it is way too big and heavy, a deal breaker. I also can't afford RF glass. With A7IV I got one G master lens and rest are Tamron zooms, cutting weight by 60%. I'm probably one of many switching to Sony solely due to third party lenses. Canon, listen up!

      @@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision No like I said, the EF route is way too heavy and big with the adapter. I was hardly ever going to want to bring the camera with me. I dont have $ to buy EF lenses and then change them for third-party RF lenses when they come out. And who knows if and when they come out. I'd lose a bunch of $ in switching from EF to RF. Not worth it. I already made the switch. Got Tamron zooms, one G master (50mm f1.2) and may get a G 20mm f1.8. $8k invested. I'm good. It's going to take a lot to return to Canon from here on out. Either Sony is going to have to really piss me off or Canon wow me to a galactic level with new offerings for me to make the switch. ✌

    • @firpofutbol
      @firpofutbol ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@soscenicphotography194 That is great but there are many of us non-professionals that can't afford a full lineup of RF glass. The only option is EF lenses with an RF adapter. EF lenses are relatively heavy compared to A-mount lenses. Now throw in an adapter and the weight and size becomes are hindrance. Also, Sony GM lenses are generally lighter and smaller than RF lenses. Tamron lenses are even lighter. Third-party lenses have come a long way and perform 90%-100% of big brand quality at half the cost. The variety is also great. For example Sigma just came out with an amazing 60-600mm A-mount professional quality lens, a zoom range not offered by Sony or Canon. Tamron has an amazing 35-150mm f2-2.8, a zoom range also not offered by Sony or Canon. I bought Tamron zooms and one Sony GM (50mm f1.2) and couldn't be happier. I disagree that third party lenses don't compete with RF lenses. In many cases they give both Canon and Sony a run for their money.

      Hey there...good comment 😄 I am having a nut house in my head now deciding whether to go with the R or the R6 mark II...I need it 90% for photography, not much video...since you've seen/used both, would you recomend me to get the R and save money for lenses, or just get the R6 mark II? I need it primarily for weddings, events....is the extra money for R6 mark II that much worth it, or is the R good enough for the task nowadays? Thanks ahead! 👍

    For someone that only shoot in 4k 60fps for long hours of content creation & photography for events would, you recommend R6 markii or R5C? Canon says the R6mkrii could record for 40 min before overheating at that frame rate, but I cannot find the info for how long it takes to cool down... thanks for your input.

      Canon stabilization is better than Sony in most situations. I don't shoot in low light very often so I don't have much input on that. I haven't tested the autofocus side by side in enough situations to give you a definitive answer. A lot of it comes down to which lenses you are using too. Lots of variables.

    Hi Josh, been watching a lot of your videos over the months, after having purchased an R6 Mk II. I haven't done extensive filming (I pretty much bought this 90% for video purposes), but in what I've seen so far, I've been really disappointed in the noise levels (especially in the shadows, but also sometimes in the midtones). I've only been filming in CLOG-3, since filming without 4:2:2 for me would be useless. Are there any ways to improve the noise levels? What I'm seeing in this video, in comparison to the R5, the R5 noise levels are a whole lot cleaner. I'm starting to feel like this camera was a mistake, and that I should have purchased an R5 or something else entirely. Any suggestions? Any word on firmware updates that could improve the noise levels? Other than this one fatal flaw, I've been really happy with it. I hope I'm just one setting away from a major improvement. Fingers crossed.

    thank you for your video. Just one request/advise: you provided a lot of useful information but they would be much more fruible if you put a schematic overlay at the end summing up all the differences or one at the end of each feature you analized. It might be redoundant but consider for non English mother tongue viewers, even if your speach is perfectly clear, it's harder to follow such a stream of words and concepts and memorize them all without a graphic aid.
    I still have a 6d-mkII whith I've never liked. I bought it because the 5dmk IV was too much expensive for my use. I had a 5d and still have a eos 3 so 6D's body was a compromise I never get used to. Beautiful pictures in high lights but bad low light performance.
    I'm awaiting for new R6-mkIII for deciding if buying the old R5 or the R6 mk III but this time I'll surely try them both physically rather than choosing just by their theorical specs.
    If R5 mk II were cheaper I had no doubt and I'd go for that.
    I shoot preferrably landscape and portraits but I sometimes take some pictures of horses and RC airplanes which would benefit a good af and I really loved eye - control AF on my old eos 3. So I hope R6- mk III have it. I'd like to learn shooting video of RC airplanes and street baskeball and I'd appreciate the easy access to video section provided by R5 mk II and R6 mkII.
    I wonder if I'd rather giving up newer features and better ergonmy preferring old R5 non stacked sensor for higher dynamic images.... Could it be better than a 24Mpixel stacked sensor?
    I'll watch with pleasure your analysis when R6mkIII is available, thank you

      I know you have commented several times about this and I have commented that the noise reduction is set as default (not off). In my studio tests, I am exposing based on Canon's recommendations. If you expose to 35% on a gray card in Clog 3 then you will see what I show. This camera definitely appears to benefit from overexposing the image, but that is always a trade off. I plan on making a detailed video about this, but I've just been super busy.

      Strange. I shot vlog at night in the car with just traffic and street lights and I did not see a difference between my A7IV and my R6Mk2. I expose the R6 with +1.5 stops and use a Canon or a Sony lut ( yes Sony ). I super happy with ISO 3200 virtually no noise and seems same as my Sony which I just sold. CLOG 3 / Cinema Gamut / Sharpness +3 / Saturation +1. I use the official Canon Lut the 33DR Cinema to Rec 709 cube file or the official SonySLog3CinetoRec709v1 with minor tweaks scene dependent. High ISO Speed NR standard. I found all other Canon luts tend to add more noise. I shot a single sceene and applied over 140 free luts I have and these 2 worked the best.

    I dont know why people keep asking for CF Express on enthusiast level cameras like the R6m2. R5 is closer to the entry pro level camera whereas R6m2 is only meant for enthusiasts. Enthusiasts dont always need to burst super-fast or do high end video so they dont need CF Express on the body. If "professionals" wanna do serious works get the R5 R3 and those would have CF Express. Pretty sure Canon already had the strategy planned out for these cameras and who they were meant to target. The R6m2 is only 2500$ it makes no sense to buy a 512gb CF Express card for 20% the cost of the camera body itself. Just because some "pros" want it on the R6m2 so they can buy cheaper camera for work doesnt mean consumer folks will appreciate it. I personally dont see a reason why i would want the CF Express because I dont need to shoot that fast or record 6K 8K stuffs on it. If i was doing more serious pro stuffs I would go for a higher end camera.
