    My heart loves Canon but my head chooses Sony every time. It comes down to lens selection for me. Those third party lenses make the a7iv a much cheaper camera to buy, especially here in Australia where the r6 mark ii body is also $300 dearer than the Sony.

      @@77dris Yours is a possible way of approaching to Canon mirrorless system and I considered It well, but It has some serious downsides. First, you buy old lenses (furthermore not original ones): they will lose their value quickly, bad investment. Second, I love and have all the Sigma art primes but I'm pretty sure that they can't be faster focusing than an RF L glass (there are at least two technical reasons, one is the focusing motor and the other is the fact that they're not optimized for a mirrorless system even if the adapter does well its job). Third, ergonomics that means even size and weight (not only good body) with adapted lenses you'll lose compactness and you don't surely save weight, not to mention that even the RF lenses (pro ones) are going more on the heavier side compared to Sony GM. Fourth, built: comparing R6 to A74, canon doesn't feel as well built as Sony even considering used materials (Canon feels Better in the hand but It feels even cheaper for using more plastic and not having a full weather sealing, not to mention that I personally find their grey color really unattractive and I still don't understand why they didn't go for black). Long story short, you embrace a new system but not at its own full potential.

      @@emanueledonazza473 Please stop the bull 💩about Sony cameras being better built than Canon. Canon cameras are built like tanks to last forever. Sony cameras are made in Thailand for a reason. Cheap labor. Sony does have cameras made in Japan but they’re Pro Video cameras made for TV studios. Very expensive. All Canon cameras are made in Japan and follow a much higher quality control than Sony made Thailand cameras. EF glass works just as good on mirrorless system and has a much higher resale value for a reason. Sigma has decent glass and they are now working with Canon to make RF glass. Tamron, Rokinon, Samyang, Tokina, and TTArtisan are basically crap. Best way to find out why third party lenses are crap is find out their resale value. Emanuel your just another Sony fanboy. End of story.

    Great points of consideration when buying cameras particularly matching cameras with folks your working with and also the current system youre invested in. Coming off of Olympus E-M1s way back 2016 I've been longing for Sony A7 full frames but fast forward to 2022 I opted for a Canon R6 just because the team I'm working with shoots Canon and were well invested in Canon L glass. Pixel peeping doesnt make sense to me personally as you can see folks adding noise, grain on videos and slapping presets on stills. The R6 works great with a Ninja V so it provided better video workflow overall in my use case, no overheating with this setup either. Great video as always Josh!

    Awesome video I’m going for the R6 II this is good to dig deep with the detail of the pixel peep but for real when you do videos, for wedding couples, family get togethers, events people don’t know anything about what we know about this noise and other things the clients just love that what you did looks good and nice to them. And as of now there are talks with canon for 3rd party lenses I think from sigma and with the adapter go back to EF lenses and even the 3rd party EF lenses you do have a big selection with lenses but we do want new 3rd party RF lenses. Again awesome video I’m waiting for my R6II from Bestbuy order.

    Hi guys, ill tell you my experience but I need a your point of view. I had a A73 (I had sigma 35 1.4 and 105 1.4 , the 105 amazing lens I miss) for two years, shooting portraits and motorcycles. I found something in that camera I didn't like: a lot of shutter lag, slow evf, ofc flash black screen problems. Then I switch to R6, have been a year now, great camera, not sturdy like A73 to hold in the hands but that not a problem. The R6 is so fast, no shutter lag like on DSLR, Evf 120hz perfectly for photograph motorcycles in tracks paired to a 135 f2 and 300 f4 L lenses. But after less than 8000 clicks appears a bubble on the shutter curtain and cost too much to replace it and I want to sell it and get something else (preferably with higher mpx). Miss the fact there's no much good quality native lenses like sigma on Sony. Would love to get the 85 1.4 DG DN. I maybe could get Z8/R3 but that's a lot of money (the Z9/A1 are out of my budget) Or should i just get a R6II, A7IV or something else? I don't know what to do. I even thinked about getting a Nikon D850 instead. No mirrorless problems.

    A great comparison video Josh, thank you for putting it together.
    One important point IMO that I have not seen discussed much, if at all, in the review and comparison videos between these two cameras is the fact that a buyer has the option to purchase a used Sony A7IV for quite a bit less than a new Canon R6MKii.
    Given that these two cameras are so close and comparable on many aspect the Sony would have the financial advantage over Canon at least for the next few months until R6MKii become available on the used market.
    What are your thoughts?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! I totally forgot to mention that and I usually like to talk about used prices too. I think saving a few $100 is probably not as much of the decision as lenses and the other things, but it can definitely be part of it, especially if you only need one or two lenses.

    • @kaimelis
      @kaimelis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if you disregard the used pricing, the A74 is cheaper than the canon and you save literal thousands in lenses. If you are not in the canon system already (the R system) its still a no brainer. Try out the samyang 135 f1.8 and you will never look back.

    Hi Josh, thanks for the detailed comparison. I like how you simply renamed the R6 II to R7 a few times^^
    I'd like to know whether the High Temperature Shutdown Setting was set to High on the a7iv when it overheated on you? This info will probably influence my buying decision so I hope you're able to answer it. Cheers!

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. I'm not sure what you are referring to by renaming those cameras. Yes, I had the A74 temp setting to high, screen open and on a tripod. It overheated on me three times in 3 weeks. Some people have never had theirs overheat though.

    @matthewTobrien ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Incredible break down of both of these cameras. Question: I didn't notice if you mentioned how you recorded on the A7IV footage that you put up against the R6 II's images - did you do IPB to IPB or IPB to Sony's ALL-I? If so, does the R6 II take a hit with dynamic range, etc. in comparison to the A7IV because of IPB? And especially the sharpness in IPB vs ALL-I - IPB softness was always my biggest complaint with the 6D MkII, but I know you and I discussed that the 6D MkII seemed to have something else going on to cause that softness. Love the new studio and lighting, and I love all the angles you're incorporating. Videos are looking great!

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Matthew! Great question! For my tests I always shoot in the highest quality the camera can do internally. I usually explain all of the settings and parameters in the individual test videos. I left them out here to keep the video length down. The way I understand it is that IPB vs All-I will only really matter when there is a lot of motion in the frame. All-I records each frame but the IPB doesn't record every frame to save space and then interpolates the frames that are missing. This would cause some artifacting or loss of sharpness with motion (either subject or background). I haven't done a dedicated video on this, but I don't see much of a difference between the two for most things over the past few years. I usually personally shoot in IPB (Long GOP) most of the time to save on space because they look similar to me. I remember the softness on the 6DII, but I think that was from something else, not IPB.

    Hey Josh, thanks for the awesome video as always! I'm also enjoying the R6 II currently and A74, but I would say the A74 is the clear winner here looking at it from my perspective and use cases. On paper I really thought the R6 II had the potential to be an A74 killer, but that has been proven to not be the case I would say. However, those Canon colors are so nice outside and the R6 II does seam to be noticeable better for wildlife with the 4k/60p, no overheating issues, way better rolling shutter, and slightly better IBIS. Really looking forward to the R5 Mark II :)

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TOPSFANIS I don't shoot wildlife video and I am more a photography user overall so the 4k/60p full frame is not that big of a deal to me. The Sony AF is significantly better for humans in my opinion and Canon is significantly better for wildlife, but humans are what matters to me most. The A74 has a higher resolution sensor which I want for portrait editing and Landscape detail and it has a full size HDMI for when working in the studio with monitors which is nice. In addition, as you can see from Josh's testing, the dynamic range on the A74 is noticeable better than that on the R6m2 so that is the other key feature that matters to me personally. Lastly, the lens selection issue is a gigantic problem still for Canon when compared to Sony. Canon is catching up and making really awesome top quality L lenses, but that process takes a very long time due to the engineering complexities of new optics... The R6M2 is a great camera though don't get me wrong, but we each have a wants and needs that differ and I hope that clears up my comment above for you a little... All the best, Jay

    I've shot with Sony A systems commercially since the original A7s and I recommend any new company to get it simply because of how many videographers are familiar with it and the wide range of affordable lenses available. But good god do I hate their colour science, it's always been a nightmare to grade with that strange greenish purple tinge that makes a person look a little like a zombie. Coming from the Canon 450d from way back, I would pick the R6 with it's beautiful skintones anyday for personal work. Really hope they open up to third party lens options.

I was able to use all three for a short time and I found the front dial, rear wheel and four-way selector and customizations on the A7iv matched up with my R7 more comfortably than the R6 used with the R7. The A7iv also has 33mps instead of 20mps. Now that the R6ii has come out it has more megapixels but I still like the compatibility of my Sony and the R7. I adapt EF lenses like the EF300mm 2.8 L to both of them with great results. Also I especially love the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM and having the A7iv is worth it almost just for that lens.

Overall, I am generally satisfied with its performance, but there is one specific issue I encountered related to the LCD screen. While using the LCD to compose my shots, I noticed a noticeable delay in the shutter response. For example, when I wanted to capture the moment my son smiles and press the shutter button, the camera would capture the smile a fraction of a second later than intended. Similarly, when attempting to capture the exact moment when someone's eyes open, the camera often captured moments when their eyes were closed instead. This resulted in several photos with such discrepancies when using the LCD screen. Interestingly, we did not experience any similar issues with our Canon RP camera. This situation led me to question whether my R6 Mark II unit might be defective, as it is concerning to receive a brand-new camera with such performance problems. Despite my efforts to find similar issues online, I could not locate anyone else with the same problem, which makes me think that I may have received a faulty unit from Canon. It is disheartening to encounter this issue right out of the box

      @CristianGilca1337 I actually returned the first one and bought a brandnew one from Canon. The funny thing is the second one has the exact same issue but fortunately I found the solution to fix it. All you have to do is to turn off Image Review (Canon set 2 seconds by default) and that's it. I think this maybe the firmware issue that Canon may need to address it as it's so ridiculous for such an expensive camera to have this kind of issue.

Would you consider either good enough for potential video client work or is something like the A7s iii or Fx3 really the better choice for that? yes the sony a7iv has a better dynamic range thanks to the slog3 vs clog3, but it should also be noted that the clog3 is easier to work with. The final rendering whether in slog3 or clog3 will have the same level of contrast… in clog3 we will just lower the blacks less than in slog3, because clog 3 is more contrasted. Better dynamic range helps especially if you do a lot of post work… which is not the case when working with mirrorless cameras.
    Regarding the lenses, there are complaints that canon has closed the rf mount, but last year I filmed plenty of weddings with the r5 + tamron 24-70 f2.8 stabilized combo, and found the AF just as good faster than a native rf lens, and the stabilization changes everything. With sony, tamron's f2.8 zooms are not stabilized...and I saw the difference in handheld. Everything is above all a question of which ecosystem we prefer.

    Am i stupid or is this just a comparison of the camera's video capabilities ? Because i saw another video and when they compared the low light for photos the r6m2 had way better performance than the sony

    I just bought R6 Mark2 ,didn't use it yet but I don't want to sell all my canon lens.

    I really like Canon, but I am totally invested in Sony. And to be honest, I do not care about 4k60, so the crop of A7iv does not bother me. My complain with Canon would be the low mpx count, because for now I really need a more hybrid camera.

    Great review. I'm a bit lot as to what's the point of comparing Sony vs Canon vs any other brand. It's not like people are going to switch brands left and right on a yearly basis. Once you've invested on a set of lenses, very hard to switch unless you're insanely rich.

      Thanks! Some people are trying to decide on which camera system to by in to. Or maybe thinking about going from APSC to Full Frame. These cameras are direct competitors and definitely worth comparing.

    Now that you have both cameras and tested both of them. Lets say you can only pick one camera for your 2023. Which one will you pick and what will be your reasons to pick that?

      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha. You're trying to make me pick a winner! I can't. I own both and will use them for different things. Granted, I am very fortunate to be able to have both. As I discussed in this video, there are tradeoffs with both cameras and neither is perfect. It really depends on what you are using the camera for. My personal needs as a content creator and camera tester are very different from most people.

      @@Josh_Sattin it's very hard for me to take decisions as been doing so much research and I like both cameras. I am no professional but I am keen in doing video and content creations. I can afford only one model not both like you. I currently have canon80d thinking to upgrade. Sony I liked low light, custom buttons, high dynamic range. Canon I liked colour science, lcd display resolution, 6k raw output future proof. Now I can't decide. Please help. I have 16 inch mac book pro 2019 Intel with 16 gb ram. I work on final cut Pro. I like to take pics as well. Should I go sony a74 or canon r6 mark 2.

      They are both great so pick the one that feels best in the hand and to use. Ergonomics beat everything because if you don’t like using it you won’t want to use it.

      @@Paulsonjc I feel your pain. I have the 70D and a sigma 24 70 2.8 EX DG and a nice Canon Ef 70 200 2.8 L IS USM lens. I want to switch to the Sony a7iv, but that Canon 70 200 is holding me back. That was an expensive lens, which makes me lean to the R6 and might even look at the R5.

    You should add ”for recording video” to the name of this video. Almost everything in this video is directed to video makers.
