This was awesome and you're so talented! I think if this video teaches anything it's that the talent is far more important then the microphone when capturing a solid performance.
First of all, I commend your efforts. Making a video like this makes A LOT of work. You also have a great voice; thoroughly enjoyed your performance. I would have paid to watch this. Now while there are slight differences in each of the mics, the truth is that you can make a successful record with any of them really. For anyone torn, analysis paralysis is a thing. A lot more goes into making a successful record; technology has made possibilities virtually endless. Your room, your pre-amp, your cabling, your entire vocal chain, your performance, your mixing, your mastering are all equally important factors. My two cents? Use this awesome video to give yourself an idea of what each mic sounds like and remind yourself that if he performed solely on any of the mics, you still would have watched and enjoyed his performance. Simply pick what you can afford; invest the rest of your time in KNOWLEDGE. That's the only thing that is not subjective. I have the Warm Audio WA-87 and 47 and I am quite happy with them. Would I like to have a Neumann U87? Absolutely. Would I spend that much right now? Quite unlikely. Remember, there are a number of things that you would need to get the best out of any mic; not just the mic itself. Definitely subbed and looking forward to more from you my friend. Thanks again.

Great video! The U87 is amazing of course but I was actually kind of blown away by the WA87. It has a very forward upper midrange that hits the sweet spot that really helps voice cut through. The rap song is awesome! You've got talent oozing out of you. Did you also compose the music? Definitely my favorite mic shootout. How about a 67 shootout?
Biggest takeaway here is that the NT1, many people’s ‘first decent mic’ purchase still holds its own, even against a Neumann 87. Beyond that, the WA, Stam and Neumann were so close you could comp them all together on a track and no one would know.
The production and entertainment qualities of these videos are superb. I'm not even in the market for a mic. Just hooked on how you're going to make the video extra interesting.
Love the lyrics man!! Ur mixes rock brooo, and this is just for a simple review, I can't imagine what would happen if this guy made real songs! I'll go check out ur channel for ur music bro, keep it up! SUBSCRIBED!
Hands down on your voice the STAM was the clear winner every time. Though on the acoustic guitar I liked the Warm Audio the best. When you added the vocals in on those tracks where they separate recordings or just done at the same time. Awesome vocals and production by the way.
I agree Stam for price, value, clarity. Don’t think the NT1 is that bad. Of course the 87 is amazing. And I’d vote Warm 3rd. Great and hilarious video!
Thank you Joe, I actually think that including NT1 is a great thing, really never understood people complaining about comparing two pieces of gear with the different price tags, like that measures everything. It would be nice if the tracks are played solo, in the mix many things can go under the radar so not really that useful while talking about nuances.
Best mic shootout I've seen... and I've watched way too many. I came to the comments to complain that you didn't include any unprocessed solo'd tracks, but then I saw the download link which is even better. Super impressive vocal consistency, btw.
An excellent video that demonstrates that the main thing is a good performance of a song and its competent mixing and mastering. If you don't know what to do with what you've recorded, there's no point in spending a few thousand and buying a Neumann U87 :) Thank you, Joe!
Thanks for the video! Yes, these microphones are all very similar. Maybe I'll say a weird thing, but after looking at hundreds of reviews on microphones, I can single out one thing that many people don't notice. A good microphone conveys not only voice, but emotions. And Stam did the best with that.
Just have to give a bit of feedback; damn best entertaining mic shootout that I have everrrrrr watched, congratulations! Oh, I personally like the Warm’s slight low mid-boost!
I agree the Stam Audio was my favorite as well. Sounded the most even -- no funny business in the highs. Didn't expect the WA to be more sibilant than the Ai.
In this comparison, the Rode has some nice top end, but could use more mid in comparison to the 87ai. Good to know that's all i have to do to get a closer U87 sound. Ok, probably more than that, but I think the Rode is a good mic. Sweet comparison video!
My 20 years experience, the warm sounded the best, 87 second, stam 3rd, rode last. Remember, if you just need a hit record, get the warm, if you are running a business and want to bring people through the door and having something that retains value, get the 87.
With that said, the 87 was the most disappointing of all mics when I finally got to try one moving from project studios in Canada to a proper studio in the UK.
I find myself preferring the Stam, even over the 87. Might put that one on my future procurement list. I'm equally impressed by the humble little Rode on a few takes here. Loved it on the EDM genre as it really seemed to be at home on that track and really liked it on a acoustic also. This is a great time to be a home studio musician with all of the great equipment options and they're actually obtainable for us normal folks. Things have come a long way since we were all recording on our little portastudios way back in the day. Cheers.
As an owner of the Rode NT1, I thought it really did well in this shoot out. It doesn’t necessarily compete with the others, but it’s a fraction of their cost. The NT1 is fantastic for the price.
The Neumann wins for me. Love stam and own a few stams. Neumann just has “that thing”… the thing I grew up hearing. They are all certainly usable tho. Great job.
@@marinmardari the Neumann has a nicer self compression happening and to my ears the capsule is yielding a bit more detail. That’s “the thing” and it’s better… 100% better? No but certainly 10% better. I sold my stams sa87 for a u87ai. The u87ai just sounds like a records I love and the stam doesn’t quite do that. It’s “that thing” because we’ve heard it on all of our favorite records and no, nobody actually has a capsule identical to Neumann. Their tolerances are much more strict than any other microphone company which yields such great results for every single mic they make. Stam on the other hand gets you 95% of the thing with a quarter of the cost. Stam is great no doubt.
Fortunately ( for me ) I have a mid 80s U 87 so I dont have a decision to make as to which 87 alternative would be best for me. 20 years ago a friend of mine wanted to get a good vocal mic and asked me what I recommended. I told him, " Buy an 87." He said " do you know how much they are???? " I said, " Yup...buy a Neuman." So he did and he phones me up all happy asking me, " do you know how good these things sound???" I said, " Yup. Now....Are ya glad you bought one?" He still has it. Leslie West ( the guitarist for the band Mountain.) Use to tell stories how guitarists would encourage him to try different amps saying, that they sounded just like a Marshall. He would say to them, " Well...if it sounds like a Marshall, then why wouldnt I just use a Marshall???"
In this test, the four are very good and are often equivalent, for me Warm wins once, Stam wins once or twice, Neumann often wins but Rode is not that bad. Neumann is the most consistent in the end. Another difference is that three of these microphones can be yours in three days, and the fourth can be yours in 18 months
As a recipient of Stam gear made in the eight weeks promised, shipped from Chileto Australia in 5 days - in 2021 amongst all the supply delays, I feel obliged to chime in to say they seemed to be doing their absolute best to improve their lead times. Build quality as well as sound is exceptional, and easily worth a few months wait fwiw.
@@fattommy4436 I actually recently ordered an SA87 and got it in the promised time frame. It was about 5 weeks but I wasn’t strung along like some people have claimed to be.
I ordered a piece of equipment (SA76) three years ago. Delivery was scheduled 4 months later, I canceled the order after 15 months of waiting (having seen in certain comments that people had already waited more than two years for their product in the end) But it seems that since then they have made lot of progress on delivery times
To my ears the STAM is closest to the midrange thump the 87 is known for. But in comparison all clones lack the depth and shine that the original delivers. It has that little extra 3D quality to it which seems impossible to beat.
Even the Ai doesn't match the quliaty of a the original U87 though. That's pretty well agree upon. Which is why many sound engineers have tried to get their hands on the classic.
lol the Rap part hahahaha !! Well done .. your voice sounds great with all of them except the Rode.. and it sounds awesome with the U87.. really great voice on every demo ..
Love the Stam. Classic 87 sound. Detail and mids are there. The ai is great too, but has that modern ai added top end that is good but maybe too much for that voice. The other 2 mics are a big step down.
Joe Quick, great job on the video. I liked how you recorded the mics separate. This gives a better sense of what the mics sound like. I like how you covered a lot of genres. Keep up the good work.
This video was awesome!! The singing was on point and comical too lol. Great job with this shootout. I own the WA87 and although all of these mics sound great, the warm was recommended by a trusted audio pal of mine who has mixed tracks for Jay-Z and owns original U87. He suggested the warm when I was looking to cop the Neumann and said save the money they’re the same mic! No sacrifice in quality at a fraction of the price won me over, and besides, I can always borrow one of his high end mics if I needed to! Win win for me! Everyone else’s situation is different so I say you should watch this video and decide which is best for you! Shoutout to Joe Quick!
Great video and shootout, and nice singing (and voiceover). I use the NT1 for voiceover. It's a little darker sounding but it's nice for eLearning and long narration that way. And I just switch on the air boost on my preamp when I'm doing anything else to brighten it up. Thank you!
I agree with your assessment. The Stam Audio sounded the best to me, though it's SO close to the Neumann that my wallet may just be influencing my ears. The Warm Audio... meh. Maybe I'm just biased after buying (and subsequently selling) their disappointing U47 clone, they just left a bad taste in my ears. It couldn't come CLOSE to my Telefunken AK-47, let alone a bonafide U47. I thought the Rode had a nice crispness to it that works for your voice, especially on rock & metal. If you're measuring bang for the buck, that one wins by a mile.
Nice work. The Neumann wins ever so slightly over the Stam in these demos IMO, and I actually own the stam. But on the EDM track, the Stam took the heavy processing the best, and the neumann "wins" by being a little bit more sparkly, which can be addressed by EQ after the fact on the stam.
I've done mic shootouts with different styles before. But mixed with the production quality this is THE BEST shootout I've ever seen. I wish you could do shootouts of every mic, pre, comp, etc that I want compared. As far as the mics go. u87 is still king. Stam is pretty close just a slightly different timbre that I personally liked less than the 87, but still warm and creamy. Warm was good but less body and highs came through more, preferred it on the acoustic guitar for that reason. Rode, well it sounded how I expected a sub $300 mic to sound compared to these, thin and sharp. Can you make a Rode work for you and put out good music? Definitely. Just not my cup of tea, and would rather not fight harsh frequencies when I could pay a little more for the Warm and not have the issues.
Nice video. The Neuman sounded the best to me. Stam was a close 2nd. The Rode and Warm were good and if I didn't hear the other 2, I would have been ok with them. The ssss was a sure give away for me. The rap section was pretty cool!! Subscribing.
The Warm sounded the best to me.
The Rode held it's own. Holy Shit!. Nice Job bro.
It sure did but had a nasty high frequency sibilance peak
Without a doubt, the DEFINITIVE U87 shootout of all internet everywhere. 👏

Nice work. The Neumann wins ever so slightly over the Stam in these demos IMO, and I actually own the stam. But on the EDM track, the Stam took the heavy processing the best, and the neumann "wins" by being a little bit more sparkly, which can be addressed by EQ after the fact on the stam.
the STAM sounds like it ha smore bad sibelence.
0:03 0:15 0:27 0:40 Yup the stam seem to sound the best, but rode was pretty good for $300.00
I've done mic shootouts with different styles before.
Great work and really excellent singing!
Nice video. The Neuman sounded the best to me. Stam was a close 2nd. The Rode and Warm were good and if I didn't hear the other 2, I would have been ok with them. The ssss was a sure give away for me. The rap section was pretty cool!! Subscribing.
I really enjoy your vids!!! They're so creative and sound so beautiful, thank you for this awesome experience, blessings!
Thanks 😊
This is the best mic shootout i've ever seen haha!!
Thank yew 😎
