Sennheiser MKH20. (Neumann is part of the Sennheiser group). Omnidirectional, very low noise, very low coloration. Still haven't heard any mic more neutral :) Thank you for this great video, a joy to watch!
Every time you go to Germany I am amazed at how approachable the companies are, inviting consumers to do business with them. Tegeler did the same thing. Because these brands are legendary they feel out of reach until you go there, and suddenly I feel like I should be a customer. Thank you Warren, I am in your debt.
It's all true :-) 2 or 3 years ago I was in Berlin. In this time I had some questions about 2 of our U89s. So I called them and in this conversation the guy just told me to come by. We have pretty much all the mics the Neumann ever built, but he didn't know this. He just offered right away to come by. I was really excited but what happened was one of the nicest things ever happened to me. I got pretty much the same tour that Warren got (even without having a TH-cam channel). I got to talk to the head of development. And in the maintenance room (which was really impressive to see all the expensive capsules in huge number in the huge drawers) the really, really nice guy who showed me around was just working on Celine Dions microphone (If I remember right it was a a historic U67). He showed me some mics that they were repairing. It was incredible. They tried everything to fix even the worst damages.. I also was in the unechoic chamber... how cool was this.:) What a nice company with smart people making long lasting products in a throwaway society. I really hope that a conservative business model like this survives... After all Nemann Mcrophones just are really good:-)
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that. Engineering done properly, by people with years of know-how. Really impressive! Can't wait for the factory and speaker division visits.
Love to see that they take their time, not trying to rush anything. They're also extremely transparent. Nice and clear explanation about the faults of pvc as well and what can be repaired. They clearly want their microphones to last decades . From what I gather in this vid, they want to market their speakers and custom design services more, but he also seems to be teasing 1 or 2 new mics in development, particularly a new km 80 series , interesting .
Great video, thank you, Warren. It’s fascinating to see how a company with such a long tradition like Neumann is paving its way into the future while still honouring and upholding its legacy. Truly inspiring.
Thanks Warren and Neumann for this virtual tour! It's really nice to see their care to do it consistently right. It's a very german thing. I'm a fan. I use Neumann mics, monitors and headphone.
Wow I absolutely love Neumann, I have one of their mics and their open back headphones which are absolutely in a different league. What I admire about German engineering and craftsmanship is the attention to details withstanding the test of time is a true testament of quality. I also use a lot of products from their parent company Sennheiser as well. They are of great quality and have never let me down. I noticed the RME Audio interface in one of the rooms. I brilliantly smiled as I knew again I was in good company. RME is another masterpiece in German engineering and design. I wish Neumann would release those console EQs in 500 series format as I would buy a pair on the release date.
I couldn't stop watching...fantastic episode. I did not know that they serviced vintage mic's. Now I know! Thanks Warren. And how beautiful Berlin by the way.

Great visit video, and geetings to you from Germany! - Just some days ago I upgraded my soundcard system to two UAD Apollos and changed my homestudio room layout a bit. It then took me just half an hour to get my sound working fine (and even better than before due to the soundcards) again, simply with a perfect measurement run with the Neumann MA-1 system for my KH750 Sub with two KH120-II. The result is just overwhelmingly great for a home studio with only limited acoustic treatment: the system delivers breathtaking clarity and dynamics, down from a fully integrated bass (which you do not perceive one bit as separate sub) up to a great spacial image for mid and high frequences and a listening experience without getting tired ears anytime soon. And I need no extra software or plugin in my system: the sound is simply present, whenever I switch my speakers on. I've really become kind of a Neumann fan over time with this "it just works and you can start making and rfecording music" expererience ...

It would be cool to see how the BeezNeez Lulu Tube compares to the KM54 since Warren likes the original so much.
Very interesting, I'll have to check them out!
when i see the speakers, i instantly see the waveguides which shape the frequency response but also create the same distance to the ears from the two or three different membranes. that means that the signal from the tweeter arrives at the ear ideally at the same time like the signal from the woofer. that timing is very important when it comes to stereo depth and width. and this is where many passive speakers fail to deliver when they mount the tweeter flat on the surface of the box.
when you do a pulse measurement you can see the spike from the tweeter, then nothing and then later, you can see the pulse of the woofer where the center of the membrane is 2cm deeper in the box.
of course when you use a digital processing, you can use a delay of one sample or even less to compensate for that.
on the digital side you have cool possibilities for lowering distortion that you don't have in the analog world.
the membrane is not fully symmetrical. moving the membrane inside is not the same like moving outside. that can be compensated as well.
the same thing with high excursion in lower frequencies. you don't have the same magnetic strength in all the excursion levels. usually the magnetic strength can taper off on the outer most excursion points which introduces distortion. that can be compensated as well.
and because digital hardware that can serve as a base for all that stuff is so cheap these days, that is an affordable option.
the only thing that i do not like is the plastic look of these neumann speakers - which of course in a studio setting has no relevance at all.
that is different to microphones. they appear live on stage or on a video made in the studio.
the optical appearance of speakers would be more important if their primary application would be in the living room.
It’s a nice plastic though. It looks and feels better than I thought it would.
