  • Comparison of the Stam Audio SA-87i and the Neumann U87 Ai on guitar, vocals and drum overheads. Many say Stam makes the best U87 clone, I have not tested any other ones, but this one is very good.
Signal chain: SA87i and Neumann U87 Ai plugged into a Neve 1073 preamp.
I sing a caption out of “Before the Woman”, written by Fredrik Löf and Ronnie Rahka. You can find the full song on Spotify or TH-cam under the artist Ronnie Rahka.
    Enjoy!

I just got mine. It sounds amazing for sure! I was pleasantly surprised to see the new Stam logo

I waited 7 months for mine, and must say it exceeded my expectations. Especially on vocals! And happy it works as a stereo pair for my U87 on overheads

They are not going to sound alike because stam audio 87 its going for the u87 vintage sound not the ai that is the modern sound

The Stam here suits your voice better

I agree, but did not want to say so in the video. On a slightly dark baritone voice like mine, the Stam is better, more open and flattering

@@ronniesmusic173 maybe it would also be beneficial to see how they sit in the mix? Sometimes listening to things in solo doesn’t give you the full picture so it would be great if you put out another video!

Nice idea. I could pop down to the studio and do some recording. I am pretty both mics are awesome in the mix, they work so well with my bright acoustic guitar

@@ronniesmusic173 great also keep it in mind that it’s interesting to see how well they take EQ compression et cetera because this is also a huge determining factor for choosing a microphone
Would be great if you could include something like that about your opinion
Ideally, people want to hear something raw
You could show mixed and raw vocals in a mix

Spent yesterday at the studio, might get some more material for a video from that

Ronnie that Neumann U87ai is so thin on your voice its awful, the Stam kills it. I think taking the highs out of the Stam was the wrong call, I think your positioning affected the with the guitar. I say this because with the voice the Stam was not harsh up top like the Neumann U87AI

I really like both microphones. Stam is definitely brighter no matter the exact placement of the mic, and I find it more flattering on vocals. Just out of interest, what equipment are you listening on?

@@ronniesmusic173 I bet you always use the STAM to record your vocals :) - by the way I like the STAM better on the guitar too, the U87AI is dominated by upper mids.

Actually I used the U87 in a busy mix, the mids help it cut through making it easy to
mix. That was before I had the Stam. Had a new session at the studio yesterday so will test which one works best
