Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.

At first I was like "this looks really boring and gimmicky"
but now I'm pogged and crave for series or at least few more episodes
It is really Gimmicky. I'm still gonna buy it to play it out and spend the hours enjoying easily playing through it. It's boring if you don't like unlocking crap that you can get. I think it's worth at least 20 bucks. I think each faction has like 1-2 ways they can win, the first two have more than the last 2.

I would love for this to be a series, this game is super interesting and I've been watching it on a couple of different channels.
I saw that there is suppose to be more artifacts, 5 playable factions in total, the acensions start you with some random cards and such, all the modifications you can do.
This game gives you a lot of freedoms and awesome synergies.

I'm writing this comment at 10:39, so I don't know yet if NL notices later in the video, but each summoned minion has (what I'm going to call) a capacity cost represented by the yellow dots at the top. Each train level can hold 5 capacity worth of minions; the ones you started with each had 2 capacity cost, so you could only summon 2, but there was still 1 capacity left. Some of the minions you passed over (the "draw one more" minion and the "give another minion 10 armor" minion) had a capacity cost of 1, so you could have fit them into a train level with 2 of your 2-cost minions.
It's like you've beaten Slay the Spire then you step into the shoes of the baddies and now you have to "revive" the "heart" by taking its last surviving piece to somewhere that can fix it

@@Xulpine No, but what NL never noticed in this Tries episode is that imps only take up 1 capacity and you have 5, so you can actually fit an imp on the same floor as 2 other dudes which usually means you get a chump blocker and a summon effect for free on a card that 'exhausts' itself.

A roguelite deckbuilder, finally! I was waiting for one of these on the channel.
Accidentally clicked away without clicking the like button so I had to come back. I appreciate that NL is so straightforward about that, how it benefits him and the channel, as well as his recommendations to wishlist games to boost developers and foster good relationships. NL really out here being a positive force in the industry

for anyone not aware the game has a demo that is free to play with the first 2 classes that plays through to the end of the game and the first "covenant" ( ascension for sts players ) level out of 25 the demo is great it does appear to be on an older build so some units have been changed buffed and nerfed since the demo but its free to try!
Oh man what an amazing game, I played the open beta as long as I could, here on TH-cam, on stream, and on my own time. This is 100% going to end up in my Top 10 Games of 2020 at the end of the year, and I would kill to have this be the 10am PST series for a while. You absolutely will love digging into the meat of the mechanics of this game. It seems good to great on the surface, but it is absolutely STELLAR once you play more. I cannot recommend this game enough NL, and feel free (and you as well, comment readers) to poke at the series on my channel if you want to see a bit more of the game.

Missing the regular uploads of Monster Train so I'm rewatching from the beginning. Really moves the needle for me.
14:47 Not only is a strong roguelite, but it has easy to miss, but important indications on monsters that the egg is already overlooking. Can't wait for the endless frustration and enjoyment a SERIES will bring to us.

Love the twist they put on the roguelite deckbuilder formula, can't wait to try the demo on Steam before it's out next week. Only thing is the capacity each unit takes on a floor and the floor capacity could be emphasized on or part of the turorial as I've seen two YT creators miss that until later into the game and assume you could only have two units a floor.
Hey! I'm one of the devs. This is a great point and we've updated our launch version to include a tutorial for this!
You may know this by now, but each floor have 5 spaces most of the units take up 2 but the imps only take one. This makes the imps more useful than you thought.
It's pretty simple. EXTREMELY straightforward.

The boss monster having the "Relentless" mechanic is actually a brilliant feature. Your spells can let you blow through the lesser waves with ease, but then you *have* to rely on your minions for the majority of damage to the boss. It's a really unique mechanic that I think works really well.
This video got me so pogged up that for the first time I looked at your vods on twitch to see what might be coming up next but then I died because I absorbed way over the LD-50 for POG

Classic NL: reads tutorial that you can only play each unit once per encounter, removes a unit from deck 5min later. Just learned he can place units on different floors, immediately ignores a card because it would take a unit slot.
Actually, removing Train Stewards is pretty standard. You will quickly stop having a reason to play them even if you have space because their stats don't even justify the 1 energy they cost after about level 3.

the little "gold" upgrade that you got the option of choosing when you pick energy instead was space for extra characters on the floor.
on the top of the cards it shows how much room a minion takes up. so like the imps or extra card draw scarcrow one only take up one slot. your champion and train stewards take up two. each floor starts with five slots of space.

I came into this thinking it seemed like a poor-man's Spire that NL was playing just because of the genre. Came out of it wanting more content of NL playing this. To be honest though, this looks way more polished then it as any right to be. love how the upgrades are down slot style instead of standard upgrading a card. definitely adds to replay, but i fear it might become too samey late game unless there's a lot of unique upgrades and some that are cursed, like +4 attack but -2 health
Gotta admit I'm highly interested, they made a good choice by having you showcase it. Now I'm mostly just interested in the price, even though it launches in about a week I'm finding no information oh what the game is going to cost, which is the real thing determining if it's worth buying instantly or holding off for updates and sales to improve the deal later. Either way, wishlisted for now.
Would love this to become a mini-series. I just spent 7 hours playing the demo after watching you play this cant wait for the full game to come out.

(( I'm sorry for leaving so many comments but )) the Trial mechanic is really neat, too. A way to implement increased risk/reward without dedicated "elite" fights.

This game reminded me of Monster Time Boardgame and I chuckled. Good times
I never like 'heaven vs hell' story lines in games, but the game mechanics make up for it in this case. And I do like the artwork and creature designs.
The orange dot above unit cards is how many slots it takes up on the floor. Your maximum capacity is shown on the top left of each floor; so you could have used those imps as well as 2 other units.
I hope to see this as a series.
