And he's still being portrayed out of character. Unless of course his personality remains partially altered by the insanity he suffered before his demise. Anyone who played WC3 and knew Kael before all this, knows that he was both determined and humble. A good Elf who gradually faltered under the pressure of a leadership role that he never wanted. He was never stuck up or bragging about his powers like some sort of pampered brat.
@@NeptuFawkes Yeah so did carry the madness with him. I'm just amazed how out of character he is even without the wild energies of the Netherstorm driving him insane. But if they're going to make an arc out of it then it's worth seeing. It'd be nice to see him become himself again.
@@justinwallace269 I totally agree. I miss the original Kael from W3 who was an amazing character you could really get behind. I'm sorry they're treating him like this. The only hope I see is that they have enough awareness ot realize that this is not actually him but only some rest possession or something. I also don't like the fact that he started insisting on calling himself the "Sun King". I hope they're tracking back to his actual characterisation, even if it's in a way where they don't have to openly admit their mistakes in TBC (making him a raid boss and writing around that decision). If that really can't be retconned at all, sure, whatever, just make him the awesome anti-hero again and write around that decision. I'm just really afraid that at this point they retconned his entire character to fit their weird decisions and clichés about him. It seems almost like they'd like us to forget, and accept. But one can always hope.
Also I really liked the Dream Team of Illidan, Kael, and Vashj. We got to see way too little of them but they were truly awesome and looking great together. The true outsiders in Outland. I don't think the original plan for W3 Kael was to have him betray Illidan.
@@glanni Indeed, I totally agree that's exactly what they're doing. This is the problem when they switch up (arbitrarily layoff) writers and don't keep track of their own lore. Blizzard has always had a halfhearted devotion to consistency in their writing, but it's only getting worse the more Activision puts money ahead of art. This is honestly one of the reasons I quit WoW earlier this month and decided to dedicate that time to writing my own books. I've had enough of living in their universe where they don't respect their own characters or the fans. That and outdated gameplay and endless grind has become tedious to me.
It is kind of cringe when they try to farm nostalgia from older characters all the time. Like how Illidan said things like "YOU ARE NOT PREPAREEEEED!" all the time during Legion
@@Surtur99 I agree with you generally, but not on this particular instance. "Merely a setback" is a very infamous meme, and Blizz famously likes leaning into the community-created memes. They even had Hogger say "Elwynn Forest merely setback!" in Cataclysm, so I really don't think this warrants a cynical response.
@@ekin4260 That's a bit cringe, though. It's like the current writers can't actually write anything good or memorable enough to become a meme, so they just recycle the memes and turn WoW into some sort of comical themepark of worn out tropes and tired-ass memes...
I really hope that Lor'themar talks to Kael'thas in this expac, Lor'themar respected Kael'thas as a leader until he betrayed them. Even if it's just a few lines of dialogue I'd still like to see an interaction between the two of them.
Would definitely like to see a conversation between Kale and Lorthemar. Maybe catch up on Silvermoon since Kale last saw it. To add to that a Sylvanas conversation would also be most interesting. "Hey, we're both elves. Both undead. Both screwed by life. Both into humans. So you wanna like take over the world or something?"
Man i really wish they never did what they did with Kael'thas. Blood elf campaign from Frozen Throne is still one my favorite gaming moments, especially the first two chapters, Kael'thas fighting with what's left of his people to reclaim the future and pride of his people, while having to deal with awful circumstances outside his control, i wish his story didn't get so tangled up with Illidan's but i guess he didn't have a choice, only wish they didn't turn him into badly made clone of Arthas. His character could have been so much more and better. One of my biggest WoW regrets.
But in hindsight, splitting the factions up into the wc3 counterparts would probably have served the "story" and "world" better. It didn't make a lot of sense to group everyone on two teams, I think that's probably where they missed out the most, but if they ever consider making a "new" WoW, creating more factions, and giving more agency to the different races would've been really nice. (Also introduce Nagas, they were such an integral part to the story as well, but then again, more raid-bosses is probably the goal here)
@@liva9994 Thing is Nagas were considered for a playable race but Blizz scrapped that due to the awkward implementation of pants on them when they gear lol

Kael's story from life into the SL is pretty of tragic when you think about, sure he may have always been arrogant and may have been destined for Revendreth nonetheless, but his true sins of enslaving Outland and joining the Legion probably would have never happened if the Scourge hadn't ravaged his people and homeland. I'm hoping for some sort of Arthas redemption (since all of his actions after taking up Frostmourne weren't of his own will) but Kael absolutely deserves to end Kel'thuzad for being the primary reason for the Sunwell's corruption.
he really wasnt particularly arrogant before TBC messed up his character. as for arthas, I mean, he already massacred the mercenaries he hired before he even took up frostmourne.
@@lenkagamine4145 TBC certainly did Kael's character no favors, but before that he did at least have an arrogant personality. Whether that's enough to be sent to Revendreth is debateable and perhaps he would have been a better fit for Maldraxxus had he not joined the Legion (after all, Vashj ended up there even though she too played a role in enslaving Outland). And agreed, Arthas was far down on the path of vengeance and certainly not innocent by the time he took up Frostmourne, I'm just saying he doesn't bear as much responsibility for Quel'thalas as compared to Kel'thuzad. And all things considered, he was sent to the Maw without being judged by the Arbiter, so he at the very least deserves that.
@@kungfuvoodoo9889 Hrm, I dunno about that. I'm watching all of kael'thas's scenes from warcraft 3 right now as I type this, and at least in his interactions with the night elves early on he is entirely courteous.
@@lenkagamine4145 Having an arrogant and courteous side aren't necessarily mutually exclusive and I'm not saying he was arrogant to a fault prior to joining Illidan and the Legion (again, TBC didn't do the best at writing him, but there was at least some prior basis to his arrogant personality type being a lot more exaggerated), the main parts in WC3 that gave me the impression of his arrogant side were his retorts to Garithos in saying fixing the observation towers was beneath him and his people when he wanted to be on the frontlines and a few other moments mostly in the Belf and Undead campaign when talking pridefully about his and his people's strength. I suppose you could say that's just taking his rightful pride, but I guess it just depends on where you draw the line between pride and arrogance. At any rate, my point is that Revendreth's requisites for souls to be sent there seems to be based on crimes one has committed, some deep personality flaw, or some combination of the two. Garrosh being there is kind of it's own conversation that's relevant here too, "Garrosh did nothing wrong" meme aside, there are certainly some legitimate debates on whether some of his actions could be considered crimes or just misunderstood attempts to defend his own people against those he viewed as threats (if you've ever read the Shattering novel or done the Horde Stonetalon Mountain questline which Blizz did technically say was the result of different story teams during Cata, those do help show him in a more positive light), but none can refute that he was arrogant. And as I said about Vashj, she too was an active participant in enslaving people in Outland, in fact now that I think about it, most places in TBC that used Broken Slaves tended to be run by Vashj's naga and her boss quote was basically about using the slaves to funnel all of Outland's precious water supplies to her, so it kind of gives the impression that she was exploiting the slaves the most compared to Illidan and Kael. Yet she ended up in Maldraxxus. I guess in this case though, it might be that it was her "warrior" spirit that qualified her for that, she does say that she chose her Naga form rather than original Night Elf because in life she preferred being valued for her strength over her beauty. At any rate, hopefully this little lorenerd rant helps explain my point a bit better?

Interesting how a lowly man can rise and fall then rise again. Kel'thuzad must have been a servant to the jailor for a long time. It can't just be in this expansion. This must be what happens when one dies who is of powerful means. The jailor to my understanding could have been manipulating all of warcraft 3 frozen throne up until the latter events of wotlk. I get it. It makes sense. Bring balance to life and death as we prepare ourselves to do it against the light and the void (dark).
kaels old voice actor from wc3 was perfect, so much better than this new guy after quinten was fired. yet in the wc3 remake they made him a beefy he-man face, which doesn't fit him. and lore wise he was retconned twice, from turning him into a mustachioed cackling villian the moment he set foot in outland to a full on second retconning in shadowlands where he becomes a pompous childish brat which they punish him for, yet which he never was. he was retconned that that is what he was but he never really was that! and honestly he was a quiet spoken prince (yes with some princly arrogance but not evil) up until the retcon as you can see from his voice in wc3 and the books vs shadowlands and the new terrible voice actor. shame they shat on his lore so much, and to this day he's denied justice. the writing really is bad, or else so many people wouldn't be upset. you can bring in new material without tearing up lore of old beloved charchters. it's like in TBC when they first retconned him and just suddenly make him and Vashj ultimate evils cause they wanted a quick boss to throw in, but vashj being female gets off the hook like Sylvanas gets off for genocide, but kael and Arthas for things they couldn't control get punished....i say this as a woman. they wrecked what could've been endless awesome story to grow as kaels charchter devoloped to secure the belfs but instead they just knocked him off as cliched baddies. lazy stuff for deadlines and a quick check cause they needed a boss in tbc, now they are like Disney unable to create any new good stuff without milking the husks of good charachters. if they were respectful to kael and vashj true lore, we could be teaming up with them to kill the scourge and fight the sanlayn or even have kael lead the sanlayn in the better direction.... endless opportunities. or even just closure would've been nice for these long time heroes where kael at least gets justice. i can only cope by telling myself he made a clone of himself to leave in shadowlands, while the real him peaced out to Dota2 as the Invoker.
so how do u get to these part on the quest with him? is this is PTR so u can do them all and upload or is it side quest u do in retail live in order to get these convos with him in game?
My main question is just... Is Kel'thuzad dead or alive? What happened after WotLK Naxxramas? Did we destroy his phylactery? I hope it's explained how Kel'thuzad made it to the realms of death and under the employ of the Jailor.
WC3 Kael'thas: Cool, and you understand his choices, and a really cool voice, WoW BC Kael'thas: Emo-kid and arrogant beyond measure, silly voice. Shadowlands Kael'thas: So far meh, still miss his WC3 voice actor.
@@podrickfookinpayne2329 It is? I didn't know, that was a surprise. He sounds so different, and I really don't like him in BC, and not so much in Shadowlands either. But thanks for correcting me on that.
@@0That_Guy0 Yeah, his delivery is very different, you can easily confuse him for a different actor. I personally wish he'd be more balanced between his War3 and HotS versions.
Blizzard bringing back old lore characters for the nostalgia (mutilating them in the process) is akin to going to Disney land and seeing people dressed as movie characters, knowing it's not actually them.
When he died he was kinda an a-hole, betrayed his people and so on. The Venthyr questline is mostly about his redemption
That and outdated gameplay and endless grind has become tedious to me.

haha! best expansion ever! thanks blizz!

He is not really a villain.

the w3 actor for Kel'thuzad is the same, i believe.
@@mackparker9064 I thought it was different too, but I think they changed the way they record it. I don't know how to explain it, but there is something different about it.
Many of the VAs should be reprising their roles as soon as _Warcraft_ is made into an animated series.
I just checked imdb. It's still the same actors, Michael McConnohie for Kelthuzad, and Quinton Flynn for Kael'thas. Considering Warcraft 3 was almost 20 years ago, maybe their voices aged?

My boy Kael'thas just go deeper and deeper into madness, who else remembers the blood elves campaign from w3? Garithos WILL RETURN!!!
@@kungfuvoodoo9889 I dunno, I mean, in context of TBC obviously kael'thas was arrogant at the time of his death. I just dont really see that much in the context of warcraft 3. I mean, I guess if sarcasm counts as arrogance, but... I dunno man. I'm not outright disagreeing with any of hte placements of characters, as by the time of their death it makes sense, its just that, well, as I'm sure alot of other people also think, I'm not into the story developments that *made* it make sense.

They made us believe it was Arthas, nerzhul and kelthuzad. No, it was the jailor as he stopped people from dying peacefully and being sorted into their realms like a Harry Potter sorting hat event. I get it. It makes sense. Bring balance to life and death as we prepare ourselves to do it against the light and the void (dark).
Wow this lore becomes more apsurd with each new expansion.
kaels old voice actor from wc3 was perfect, so much better than this new guy after quinten was fired. yet in the wc3 remake they made him a beefy he-man face, which doesn't fit him. and lore wise he was retconned twice, from turning him into a mustachioed cackling villian the moment he set foot in outland to a full on second retconning in shadowlands where he becomes a pompous childish brat which they punish him for, yet which he never was. he was retconned that that is what he was but he never really was that! and honestly he was a quiet spoken prince (yes with some princly arrogance but not evil) up until the retcon as you can see from his voice in wc3 and the books vs shadowlands and the new terrible voice actor. shame they shat on his lore so much, and to this day he's denied justice. the writing really is bad, or else so many people wouldn't be upset. you can bring in new material without tearing up lore of old beloved charchters. it's like in TBC when they first retconned him and just suddenly make him and Vashj ultimate evils cause they wanted a quick boss to throw in, but vashj being female gets off the hook like Sylvanas gets off for genocide, but kael and Arthas for things they couldn't control get punished....i say this as a woman. they wrecked what could've been endless awesome story to grow as kaels charchter devoloped to secure the belfs but instead they just knocked him off as cliched baddies. lazy stuff for deadlines and a quick check cause they needed a boss in tbc, now they are like Disney unable to create any new good stuff without milking the husks of good charachters. if they were respectful to kael and vashj true lore, we could be teaming up with them to kill the scourge and fight the sanlayn or even have kael lead the sanlayn in the better direction.... endless opportunities. or even just closure would've been nice for these long time heroes where kael at least gets justice. i can only cope by telling myself he made a clone of himself to leave in shadowlands, while the real him peaced out to Dota2 as the Invoker.

Blizzard bringing back old lore characters for the nostalgia (mutilating them in the process) is akin to going to Disney land and seeing people dressed as movie characters, knowing it's not actually them.
