Im loving the fact that the Steam deck has fulfilled its purposes for existing, one of them is to actually push this idea of handheld devices to be more produced. People might prefer either the Deck or ally, but I think everyone can collectively agree that if it wasn't for valve's idea to push this idea that none of this would've happened.

I guess Nintendo is just chopped liver?
I mean all of these devices LITERALLY are just copying the idea and design of a switch entirely...
Sure they are effectively PC's instead of a "console" per say... But lets not give so much credit to steam when Nintendo basically started this trend...

handheld PCs have been a thing for long (Valve is not the one that started this) since Ayaneo, and GPD, however they are expensive and out of touch for common people ... Valve just kicked the door on pushing the handheld PC space on making it affordable and accessible.

Both are great devices and lenovo joining the portable pc handheld market with their own innovations seems like a good thing for the future.

Personally, for handheld gaming devices I think that battery life, heat, fan noise, ease of use, stable performance, and a pick up and play nature are the main priorities. I think the Steam Deck hits the right balance of these attributes. I have a powerful desktop PC and a PS5 for when I want even greater performance.

Having good desktop PC is my go to for gaming new AAA titles and game pass but Steam Deck fits the bill for older games and AAA before 2021 which I have a ton of backlog on steam so every time Im not at home Ill have this baby to get me by :D. Oled visuals with HDR are jaw dropping like seriously Ori and Divine Original Sin 2 just pops more than on my lg oled tv which doesn't hit 1k nits. One thing to realize that on oled display older games and indie titles ie Vampire Survivors just look great.

The bigger/better screen, more power, and having access to all my games from multiple store fronts make the annoyance of windows worth it to me. • @Tass...
      @Tass... 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Okay there are several reasons. The main one is that something like steam OS gives a genuine console like experience. You can turn it off and resume it whenever you like and the OS is very console like. You don't even ever have to interact with Linux if you don't want to. That's very appealing to many people. No interruptions for windows updates. No having to check for driver updates. No tiny little clumsy boxes you have to try and interact with on a windows touchscreen. Then you have power consumption. Waaay higher. When you add all this up and the argument for the Legion Go is just "it has a bigger screen and is more powerful" you are then essentially just making an argument for a windows laptop which will have a better battery and more power that you can use an Xbox controller on for the same price as a Legion Go. At that point why do you even want a handheld console? Because at that point I see no real benefit. A handheld is supposed to offer convenience. There is absolutely NOTHING convenient about having a windows OS on a small screen. It's not designed to be handheld friendly. Steam OS is built from the ground up to be on a handheld. Very different user experiences.

I’m going to be honest, I have an Ally and I’ve been considering upgrading to a LeGo for the bigger screen and also looked at all the Windows PC handhelds with a >=8” screen size (A1 Pro, Kun, OneXPlayer 2 Pro, Win Max 2, etc).. I’ve also tried my best to steer clear from all the Deck stan cries for “gEt A StEaM DeCk”.. but this review has honestly been the final blow and I’m now sold on just getting a damn Steam Deck OLED. I’m going to be commuting via train a lot here soon and I know that sleep suspend feature is just going to come in clutch as well as no longer having to fiddle around with Windows jank. I have a gaming PC. If I want to do more than the Steam Deck can handle, I’ll just play on the PC or stream to it. I’ve noticed I’m mostly playing lighter games on my Ally anyway - PSP emulation, Skyrim, some Switch which the Deck should be fine for handling. Thanks for the review, subbed.

I think the issue that handheld developers are having that Valve figured out. Is that hand held gaming isn't about just cramming the best tech you can into it.
It's about building a system that works in harmony with itself and provides a great over all experience.
The issue is, a lot of these companies are PC companies and the trend with PCs is to just stuff the latest and greatest into them.
And while that works there, we are seeing with Steam Deck still being the industry standard, that mentality doesn't carry over well to this market.
Handhelds need to be built to be great handhelds.

The Legion on the other hand is more powerful, but I use my handheld gaming device on-the-go and in those scenarios I don’t need to most power since I play games more casually on the road anyways, all the sweaty games that require the highest possible framerates are played on my desktop gaming PC anyways, I don’t need 144hz display while playing Disco Elysium for example. Just got an ally after I sold my steam deck. Yes, the battery life sucks, but personally I’m fine with that cause the deck’s battery life sucked too. The only handheld that has decent battery life to me is my switch. The tradeoff has been being able to play all of my games with far better performance. The screen is also great and while it’s not oled it’s the best lcd I’ve seen on a handheld. Also, VRR is great for someone who’s very sensitive to frame drops like me. The only thing I can say though is don’t buy this at full price, I got an open box Z1 Extreme for 500 at best buy and it works/looks great.

I'm hoping Microsoft implements a proper handheld / TV mode for Windows that:
      - Boots straight into a handheld / TV interface. No login / lock screen crap unless I want to.
      - Is easy to navigate with a controller.
      - Blocks annoying popups from taking over.
      - Integrates all stores and their games.
      - Integrates device-specific settings into the Settings App.
      - Forces manufacturers to distribute their apps and drivers through a unified update system like Windows Update.

But gameplay, like diablo IV, imo SD is much optimized and runs smoother. The pausing of game is really nice VS hibernating the LG and turning it on and most of the time it crash everytime, not to mention the fan is really loud if a game is runninf on the background.

As someone who owns the Ally and the LCD Deck, i can easily say without a doubt in the universe that i’ve spent far more time trying to finesse the correct version of Proton to get my games to run or trying to get practically any multiplayer game to boot given their anticheat of choice etc.
The steameck really hard limits the user behind multiple levels of limits:
1: It’s limited lifespan of triple A performance due to its SoC
      2. Unless your savvy enough, it’s steam games only.
      3. On top of it being steam games only, it’s only SOME steam games only, which even on top of that, then it’s Deck Verified games (not only, granted)
I still have my Deck, but it’s running windows now as well. I don’t use it though my girlfriend does and it works great for her.
But my Ally, for sure had a shit ton of updates the day i bought it but its pretty much never had to do that since. Every once in a while you’ll get a driver update from Asus but its clearly presented to you and you just tap install and restart and it’s over.
And now i can just play literally any PC game I want on any launcher I want from Any era of gaming I want and do it with incredible performance

@@rfx8459 1. The deck came out Feb. 2022, and assuming it was in production a great while before then, it's specs are what it is. Still a hell of a beast. Of course devices that came out later are gonna have better specs.
      2. I don't think you have to be "savvy". The SD community is extremely helpful, from reddit to youtube anything you want to do is usually laid out for you step by step. I'm a novice to PC gaming and was able to accomplish a lot with just basic computer knowledge.
      3. Much more than just steam-verified games work on the deck. Hell, there are even games the deck can play that the Ally can't due to it's track pads that function as a mouse.
Idk, I feel like people like to bring up proton layers and all that stuff to make it sound more complicated than it actually is, when for the most part, it's just going into a sub menu that takes less than 5 seconds lol.
Only caveat of the Deck I would say is no EAC support, but even that can be fixed in literally *30 minutes*. Dual-boot windows, and bam. Now you got your Call of Duty, Destiny 2 and your gamepass games. For the price, the deck has quite a lot of value; it's ease of use, it's helpful community, and the variety of things that you can make it do.
But most importantly is that if you *don't* want to do any of that and just wanna pick up and play, you can. It's stock experience is great as well.

Edit: I was your 667th like. I saved you from Satan! Haha.
This is a fantastic comparison. Good job. My thought on the legion go is similar to what you said. Why get the legion go when you can just buy a small gaming laptop? Then the battery life just doesn’t make sense. I own android based gaming handhelds(Odin 2 Pro and Retroid Pocket 3+) and let me tell ya, you don’t know battery life until you’ve used one of those. Those things last for days on end. But you can’t play really any steam games or anything unless you stream them and that technology just isn’t there yet in my opinion. That’s why I bought a steam deck oled. It’s like the best of every world. I can emulate anything basically, I have access to my huge steam library, I can stream games on it, and if I want I have the option to tinker and get game pass or epic games going on it. To me, the steam deck oled just makes the most sense for everything I personally want to play. The battery life is decent too.
Lastly, you know people are going to throttle down the legion go to a lower resolution and lower wattage to gain battery life, basically making it a steam deck with a slightly larger screen. What’s the point? Just get a steam deck.

For me, the Steam Deck wins out in the areas that matter, quality control, ease of use and battery life.
Would I like to have better specs? Yes, but not at the expense of battery life, and I think this is where Valve got the right balance with the Steam Deck, basically, from videos online, the Legion Go seems to perform worse than the Deck at 15 watts and in some cases, a lot worse, but when giving it 20 watts or more, it performs better, which for me defeats the purpose of being a portable device, especially considering that historically speaking with portable gaming devices over the decades, weaker ones that have better battery life tend to do better than ones with better specs.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have better specs, but I'm mindful of the purpose of getting one of these devices, which is to play games and I find that gamers play games differently on portable devices then at home, probably because if I want to play higher end gaming with a lot of the bells and whistles, I would play them on my gaming rig and big screen, whereas portable devices for me feels like a pickup and play a bit, put it down, play some more a little later on so on, which for me, the Steam Deck is perfect for that.
I also like the idea that a lot of things are taken care off for you with the Deck, you don't have to worry about updating the bios, drivers, OS, setting them all up and maintaining it and that for me is the biggest weakness of the Legion Go and ROG, it's a generic Windows PC with all the problems that come with that, which ironically, they would be more appealing if there were a SteamOS option that's fully supported and integrated like it is with the Deck, and in the end, the Steam Deck is the closes we've got to a hybrid PC/console, with a lot of the openness of a PC and much of the ease of use of consoles, that for me is why the Steam Deck wins by a long shot.

So does the resolution not make that much of a difference on the legion go? I'm not so much concerned with portability/battery issues, I'll be using it around the house/in bed. You've sold the issues you experience with the legion go. But do you never find yourself playing the steam deck and look over to your legion go and think "man this game would run better/look better on the legion go, I think I'll pick that up instead". That's my biggest concern that's stopping me buying between the two just now. Everyone says steam deck, but I'm concerned I'll regret not getting the higher resolution/better fps on go. What is the actual REAL resolution that most games are ran at on legion go? I think if I knew that, I might realize it's not that drastic of a difference.
But I went from 1080 to 1440 on pc and couldn't go back. Then when I went from 1440 to 4k I felt I couldn't go back. So it's really stopping me deciding which to get.

detachable controllers? is there games that support it like switch?
fps mode? you can use Keyboard and mouse and get a better experience
software? rog ally's software is better
bigger battery? does it really matter when it give you at most 10 more minutes?
rather than pointing out the advantages and disadvantages between these devices, you chose to say a shilling statement like "the legion go is better than the ally" and removing it from the comparison based on nonsense.

Legion go has better battery life , hall effect thumbsticks , better display for looks and color even at 1200p it looks better than the rog ally, two USB4 ports the ally has only one USB 3.2 port , built in kick stand, detachable controllers so you can play any PC games switch style or not need an additional controller when you plug into a monitor , 7500mhz ram instead of 6400mhz, build quality is better , and you can remove the controllers flip it to portrait and use it as a tablet with a universal stylus.
the only thing the rog ally has going for it is vrr , better gaming UI, and better speakers because Lenovo pushed out two big updates in December so it's performing better than the ally in its 2month life span.
When you compare the specs on paper the legion Go has more going for it and starts at the same price as the ally .

Higher refresh rate locked to 60hz means lower input latency but not as bad battery drain

@@TechSpaceCowboy I’m just saying cause 120hrtz tanks the battery life on any device, even on my phone there is a noticeable difference in battery when you switch to 60hrtz.

Legion doesn't need VRR... it runs games very smoothly with that 144hz refresh rate..also the updates as of late fixed most of the issues Legion had. So it's night and Day

The SD Oled has a OLED panel and the Lenovo don't have one. So the SD Oled wins. That's it.

The Steam Deck is a very balanced device. It feels like every single detail was carefully considered, and very deliberate decisions were made.
They could have made it more powerful, but that would require sacrificing battery life and heat output. They could have given it a higher resolution display, but why when games look fine at 800p, 7", and it would require more performance demands. 800p at this size is already a higher pixel density than most desktop gaming monitors.
The competition seems to suffer from a case of "bigger number better", even though there are major drawbacks to doing so. Also Lenovo and Asus have no incentive to continue support of your device past the initial purchase.

Perfectly balanced nothing less nothing much. Designed and build by the gamers for the gamers

The rog ally has a 10x better software/quick setting ui. But it’s also been out longer, hopefully Lenovo gos gets better but the frame monitor is still broken after how many months now. Losing hope
