What's that? A PatMac video that's NOT about merchandise? Could the rumors be true? Indeed. Back in 2015, Sonic Team released an incredibly fun endless running Sonic game called SONIC RUNNERS, and it was honestly the most fun I've had with a Sonic game in years. Unfortunately though, on July 27th, 2016, Sonic Team CLOSED the servers to the game, making it 100% unplayable. For years now, I've wanted a video that documents the history of the game, but none was ever made. So, I decided, hey, I really enjoyed the game and remember a lot about it, I should share my stories with it and make that video! And so it happened. In this video, I tell the entire story of this short-lived mobile game, and believe me, there is a lot more to it than just being a simple endless runner. As you can probably tell, this is the most work I've ever put into a video, so I hope you all enjoy it! If you did, feel free to share this video around with other people that would enjoy it. Also of course, you can always like the video, subscribe, and all that good stuff if you want to see me continue making videos like this one! We'll most likely be going back to merchandise next time, but I hope you all enjoy this passion project about a literally dead Sonic mobile game.
Here are some ideas: A look back at the Kirby 64 ufo plush set, A look back at the segaworld Sidney plushes, a look back at the banpresto Christmas Mario plushes, A look back at the Etone donkey Kong plushes, A look back at the Acme Mario plushes, A look back at the Knickerbocker pac man plushes, A look back at the takara super Mario kart plushes, A look back at the Banpresto Mario world plushes.
That video was awesome and very well made! I love your videos and wish you the best on your next one! I also have 2 video ideas. Patmac's Sonic Collection 2.0. And Remakes of your videos that don't have voiceovers. P.S. This video was leaked on your twitter just like runners being leaked on 4Chan!
Hey mr patmac I was on the network and see if theres any hope to download sonic runners even though its not there in the app store but I think theres hope u I think u can play it but I haven't play the app yet but I think u can do it just promise me on this
In case you guys didn't know, Sonic Runners is playable again! Sonic Runners revival is a fan project bringing the original game, at patch 2.0.3 atm, back from the dead! Just downloaded it yesterday and it's just as I remember it (this isn't an ad, just a genuine heads up)

I remember having this game while it was out. I was so confused when I saw the app missing and was upset when I couldn't find it again. It was probably one of the only few mobile games I enjoyed consistently playing.
It's like a documentary about a game that I never really paid much heed to or knew much about. Tell the truth I didn't even know this game was gone forever until now. I'm so glad someone was willing to commit all of this to memory and document it for future posterity. PatMac does it again!
@@alexanimations914 """"""""""stole"""""""""". Seriously, can everyone just fuck off with this """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""stealing comments"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" bullshit?
Sonic 06 did a lot right, I still have several songs of it on my ipod touch (yes, I still use an ipod touch) including stage ones, Elise and rushed release must be the only two mistakes they committed and sadly are huge enough to obscure everything else though.
Sonic Runners Revival is a thing and it's exactly how I remember it. Also you skipped over the time Knuckles said "damn" in the campaign which surprised me
After playing Sonic Runners Revival for about a week now, reliving all of my old memories with Runners, I had to come back to this video to truly remember and appreciate how lucky we are Revival exists now.
The two versions of Silver fascinate me. This could either mean that the Sonic universe works under a multiverse theory, where you can't change the future but you can create a new timeline. This would mean that Sonic and Elise only created a new timeline where Mephiles never existed but the original timeline continued, therefore, the Silver from 06 continued his life and the Silver we see the most is from a different future who became Sonic's friend through different circumstances. This makes a lot of sense, as if was recently confirmed that the same thing happened after Generations, separating Classic and Mordern Sonic's timelines.
@@schemar17 I don't know if Rivals is the new timeline version of how Sonic and Silver meet or if it is Sonic Colors DS (Which is canon because Mother Wisp is in Team Sonic Racing), all i know is that that's where he and the new Blaze meet.
The Sonic Runners fan server is now celebrating the series' 30th anniversary! Seriously, the people behind that project are freaking amazing and I hope it only gets better from here on. **knock on wood**
I am actually quite disappointed, as I never knew this game existed until this video! When I saw the title/thumbnail, I assumed it was an unreleased game since I had never heard of it. It's a huge shame because I used to play Sonic Dash a LOT, and this looks like an even better version of that game to me. A similar thing also happened recently with Puzzle Fighter on iOS and Android. Always-online... Brought back a beloved classic game... Getting updates with new stages and characters... And then one day, boom, shutdown announcement with no final update to make it playable offline. The worst part is, you can still find and download the game on the Play Store, but once you open it and it tries to connect, it just lets you know that the game's servers have been closed forever! Is it really that hard to get an app removed from an app store? :p I uploaded Puzzle Fighter's soundtrack to TH-cam, and I get comments all the time from people who are disappointed that the game is now gone forever, at least as long as Capcom decides so or it gets a fan server. To be fair, the vast majority of the game's content was online multiplayer matches, and the game didn't have a ton of content to begin with. At least they were nice enough to release the final batch of characters for free... That also sucked, as the shutdown notice came at the nearly same time as a REALLY awesome patch that made the game way nicer with new stages, music, characters, updated UI, and even a new game mode. Well, leave it to me to take a comment on a Sonic Runners video and turn it into a comment about a completely different game, but I can't help but draw the parallel between the two in this case! :p
@@sonictennyson2201 Everyone knows that Puyo Puyo is the source of all evil, right? Also, Sonic Forces Speed Battle is the next culmination of the franchise, a pretty good one, but not the same… I miss Runners
Over the years, datamining the archived assets did reveal some things which never made it to Runners: According to the archived game assets, there was originally going to be a Sonic '06 event which would've introduced new buddies (and possibly Mephiles), but it never happened. It would've featured the His Theme E3 instrumental as the roulette music, and that's literally all we know about it, as the buddy data associated with it reuses the Fantasy Zone event data due to the buddies not being complete yet. There was also going to be a second raid event where you would've fought Zomom, and it would've taken place in Desert Ruins at dusk (this event probably would've showed up in October 2016 had the game kept running by then). In addition, a Silent Forest stage was planned to be playable during an event, though it's unknown which event it would've belonged to. It was never finished though, which was probably why it was never run. There is also an unused buddy, D-Fekt. Its effect was similar to Carbuncle and O-Papa, with it collecting all on-screen objects and giving you a combo bonus after a certain combo count. It probably would've been released alongside Sticks in a Sonic Boom event. Its model and animations have been lost to time, however. There are more unused goodies, but none quite as notable as what I mentioned.
I just like many people, haven't heard of this awesome game until it was already done for. It sucks that they saw it as a "failure." It was way better then most games they made, and even any mobile game I've ever seen. Edit: Immediately after I made this comment, I saw a mobile game ad, and yeah... still better than most, if not all mobile games.
It's likely they realized it was a sinking ship and stopped dedicating resources to the game's programming very early on in its abandonment. In regular English, that's "they just didn't care enough."
I was top 50 plat every season, grinded unbelievably, and the fact that it ended so abruptly saddened me. To add on, the return it with a _paid_ version.
Dude even the damn Trick System was a reference to Sonic Colors saying "Good!" "Great!" "Awesome!" "Outstanding!" "Amazing!". Sega can we get a new mobile game or hell maybe even a main series game with this much love please?
I think your assessment of why this game failed is, unfortunately, off base. I don't like its business model at all, but it works: Japanese gacha games are an extremely lucrative market, and the most successful ones never offer a way to buy gacha characters at a fixed price. Honestly, Sonic Team's decision to do so in a limited capacity may have actually been part of the problem - why spend hundreds of dollars chasing your favorite character when there's a chance they'll be available to directly purchase later? Another red flag for me in this video was the mass nerf to older companions. This is probably a much bigger contributor to the game's failure: any gacha designer that knows what they're doing will tell you to NEVER directly nerf characters (aside from in primarily multiplayer games), as it casts doubt on the power level of all future characters. It looks much less sinister to just power creep new content to the point that the old stuff is useless anyway, and it achieves the same result. Just look at Fire Emblem Heroes: it released exactly two years after Sonic Runners, so if SR was the victim of gacha fatigue or a flooded marketplace, FEH should have been hit even worse. Yet, FEH is by far the most profitable game in its series and even one of Nintendo's current highest earners. FEH has more than half its cast locked firmly behind a roulette wheel, with no other way to obtain them. It even locks most of the well known fan favorites behind said wall, and there's been no backlash to speak of. Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to say that anti-consumer monetization models were proven to be ineffective here, I think that's more of an optimistic interpretation than a realistic one.
Having been a part of the Runners craze, I think the real reason it failed was because it actually wasn't predatory enough. During the first few releases of the game, it was extraordinarily friendly - if you wanted to get everything in an event, you could, because the premium roulette would never drop more duplicates than you could carry until you had gotten the max rank of everything in the event. SEGA tried to change this to make the game more monetarily successful, which inevitably pissed people who liked how friendly it was off, and then they released the disastrous 2.0 update that killed endless running, and the rest, as they say, is history. Deeply unfortunate.
I agree with this, as it seems like it was too high quality of a game to profit off that business model and should have been a purchasable game instead without the gacha system. Although if the chances of getting characters really was that slim, it could also be that was detrimental. I could see that putting people off from spending any money at all due to the chance being so low. I'd think it would be better to make things rare without seeming flat out impossible in order to encourage people to spend money, as if they feel they have no chance of getting what they want, they won't bother.
Yeah, as he was showing the infographics, I was thinking to myself, "30 million yen? Is that all? They're probably spent quadruple that for every new event." I detest gacha (gatcha? gotcha?) games myself -- even if I am guilty of playing a handful -- but from an objective standpoint the game is too highly produced to be kept up unless it was insanely successful. With the level of detail and number of models included, I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of making this game was comparable to the cost of a then-modern Sonic game (i.e. not a mobile game). Also, as bad as it is to think this, I agree that it might not have been predatory enough, if only because the whole "spike wall" thing could have been there from launch instead of them trying to implement it and having to take it back out.
Never played the game but this is what I was thinking the whole video. The nerfs + spike walls combo in version 2.0 seems like a more likely cause. Notice too right after that happens, the events seem to gradually go to shit, indicating SEGA probably noticed the game was losing players and had to cut resources or something.
29:13 well it is actually fitting because Merlina’s whole arc is about the accepting the fleetingness of life so having her head an event celebrating the season known for the birth of new life makes sense.
Saddest thing for me I tried downloading Sonic runners a day before it got closed I didn't even know that the game existed And then it was gone And on my phone I was like what? where is the game?It was installing....
H well some guy made a sonic runners load but with private connections (meaning its not connected to sega, its connected into some private network) It’s called sonic runners revival, you can find out their channel here,th-cam.com/channels/i9BNPopIEmZOIn9VmLKu1w.html
I LOVED Sonic Runners when it was around. It was the height of my Sonic fandom, and the game was just fantastic. The art direction, the gameplay, everything. So it’s kind of sad to know that it’s been mostly forgotten. R.I.P., Sonic Runners. May you rest in peace.
What the hell why didn't they just leave the new characters on the roulette wheel after the release events they would've made so much more money from continued pulls
Sonic: I’ve come to make an announcement. Mephiles The Dark’s a bitch ass motherfucker. He killed my fucking game. That’s right. He took his Chaos Lancer out and he said it was “This big”. And I said “That’s disgusting”.
@@Probably_JENOVA so you know what, I'm making a call out post on Twitter: Mephiles has a small Lancer. And this is mine **pwahhh* That's right, all points, no quills. It looks like two balls and a bong
Fun fact: The Sonic Runners Revival team have actually begun adding _entirely new content_ to the game. So far they've added some characters like Marine, Whisper, and even Tangle, three characters who weren't in the original game, complete with brand new, custom-made models and animations. It's honestly fucking ridiculous what they've managed to accomplish. They also made a bunch of pride flag-themed chao companions, and that just makes my heart smile :)
How to make the most hyped videogame ever: 1. Make a game in a dying franchise 2. Don’t reveal it until it gets leaked 3. Tease it, but don’t reveal the title/release date, only year and platforms 4. Announce it 5. Show a trailer a week or so later, showing what everyone expected/wanted 6. Release it a few months later 7. Have the best marketing at the week of its release 8. Adding as much content/fan service as possible
Runners came out around the time I got my first job, so I spent... More money than I'd like to admit. I sunk SO much time into this game. I was sad to see it go, but there is seriously no denying how absurdly scummy this game was with its limited events and that horrible, HORRIBLE roulette. This game had so much potential, I HATE how poorly it was handled. But as a Sonic and SEGA fan, the events and references were SO amazing. I pretty much stopped playing when 2.0 came around. That Spike Wall and nerfs were the nail in the coffin that told me I was really better off using my money elsewhere, patched out or otherwise. Also OH MY GOD THE SOUNDTRACK WAS WASTED ON THIS GAME. It's one of the best Sonic OSTs, period.
I remember spending a lot of time on trying to get the werehog. That roulette sucked so much I hated everything about it, but I remember getting lucky and getting characters, Chip, caliburn and yacker. I promised myself I would’ve played it forever if I got the werehog. I sped like 10 dollars for the god damn character but when I got him I freaked out so much. But then it closed and I was so mad. But I really enjoyed this game a lot. I was almost a no life in this game
I hate how its "sequel" is locked behind a paywall. I mean, it's not expensive but it's still really disappointing. I played Sonic Runners on an almost daily basis, even on the bus home from school (with mobile data on of course). The fact that it was free (with optional microtransactions) made it accessible to Sonic fans old and new.
@@tealsummernights Damn. I wouldn't be surprised if that got shut down too. Hope they relaunch the original game with an offline mode and an online sync feature.
They NEED to re-release Sonic Runners with offline (like that guy said!) Runners Adventure is fine, but it lacks AAAAANY flare the original had. People complained simply because of the micro transactions, like you can play the game without doing those all the unlockable characters control the exact same as the main trio :/
I was never a huge fan of Runners and I only played it during the Classic Sonic event. Hearing the loss of it sucks though. And as a fan of Dragalia Lost, I'm about to deal with this kind of pain on a personal level. I can only hope that fans are able to bring both back.
It's such a shame to see Dragalia Lost shutting down Sonic Runners was brought back through Runners Revival, thankfully I hope the same can happen for Dragalia It has so much charm, it'd be awful to see it lost
The reason the events are so short is legit just because thats how Japan does things. They prefer to do constant small intense events that are easy to miss so that you feel awesome getting them and have bragging rights. Most mobile games with month+ long events are either designed for the western market or just made by western devs. Its always cool to me to see how different regions handle things like this
this is my favorite video on all of youtube. I became a sonic fan in 2017 because of dantdm's first video on sonic forces. I had always hated sonic even though i knew nothing about it or the series as a whole. I knew he was blue I knew about city escape and I knew he was fast but that was it. when I saw that upload I thought "lets give it a try i man how bad could it be?" the next four years of my life was changed and heavily influenced by sonic the hedgehog and one day this popped up in my recommendations and at the time i was still learning more and more about the sonic series and i still do. this opened my eyes to what i had missed and I released that I jumped on ship far far to late as I would have loved this as a new sonic fan but i couldn't just couldn't play it anymore. please if there are any safe fan servers please let me know because if not I'm probably just gonna buy runners adventure which i don't want to do because of its lack of content. the sonic the hedgehog series has given me so much and i love all of the character outfits and variations in sonic runners and have made countless pages of art based off of them. I need to play this game so please anything would be a big help.
The game has been revived! There is a closed Alpha of the game but it is not available to the public yet and there are currently no more seats for beta testers. The Discord has cleared up all confusion from SEGA and the project is officially a-go. Go follow the Twitter Page, its titled "Sonic Runners Revival Project". Go check out the Discord that is linked on their twitter to support the Project. MAKE SURE to read the FAQ and Rules channels in the Discord first before posting. Go easy on the Mods, Admin, Creator, and YPwn (the one developer as of right now, might change later) this is relatively new to them and its only been a week since the project started. Hope to see you there as Skyrus456!
It hurts hearing the music and seeing the gameplay I miss runners so much, Runners adventures is a joke compared to the original and hasn't been updated since launch, The roulette may've sucked but at least it was constantly updated, Also I'd done the Amy thing by making relatives and friends download it with my link then let them delete it, It was so dumb but I was so proud I did it 😂
Fun fact: In the Puyo Puyo Quest x Sonic Runners event, it's the only time Satan isn't referred to as the Dark Prince in English. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the only time.
Bro! Probably a lot of people have told you, but you should TOTALLY check Sonic Runners Revival! It's really functional, I never had the chance to play it on release, and this revival gave me that chance! I'm sure you will be pleased with it
There’s something so nostalgic yet rewatchable about this video ( despite the fact I never played runners ). Honestly I watched this last year but I still can’t get over this video just thank you.
Always loved the graphics in this game, wish the sequel kept the outlines. Also, for anyone wondering, Sonic Runners Revival is out now with pretty much all the characters (apart from alts I think, but ESP Silver is in it) and complete story mode along with timed mode. The roulette is still in it but it only needs 15 rings to roll and it's not too hard to get them anyway. They're adding custom bgm events (currently there is a Rush event on) and this Spring they will add their first stage, Silent Forest. Feels a bit janky, but from what I can tell it's basically a complete copy from the original
I was with the game from beginning to end. I'd await patiently for news, be pissed when other countries had it while we didn't, and then play the hell out of it once we did. One of the major issues was that stupid roulette wheel. It was bad enough getting characters and some companions were slim to none, but the fact that a handful were timed exclusives was unacceptable. They should've done what Sonic Dash did with its characters; have a timed event in which the player has to complete an objective in order to get the character for free. And when the event is over, the character can be purchased with red rings. Why they didn't do that is beyond me. And the required internet connection was also a deal breaker. The game was fun and I'm happy I got to play it, and not spend any real money. However, if a game hinders my ability to get everything in a reasonable fashion, I'm just left with a sour taste in my mouth. Here's hoping we get a fan server, or something, that allows people to get every character and companion, and to play the timed exclusive stages.
This game holds a special place in my memories since it is one of my favorite mobile games. Hopefully this game can get a proper fan revival in the near future. Great Video recapping the events of this game!
I think they should've made like Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. In Opera Omnia, you unlock characters by playing the main story or side chapters focusing on a specific character, and the gacha only give you equipments which you can equip on any character you want, but equiping the right things on the right chars gives then a boost in power.(eg: Cloud with his Buster Sword) The same could've been done in Sonic Runners, characters are given by completing story lines and special events, and the roulette would give their upgrades. (eg: Sonic's Light Speed Shoes, Amy's Long Hammer, Knuckles Shovel Claws, etc) Add the Companions and you get a roulette where no matter what they give you, you'd still get SOMETHING, and I'm sure as hell it wouldn't be as frustrating as the one they gave us. You know... thinking about this kinda makes me proud of Square Enix...cuz they have fuckin' *FINAL FANTASY* , with over a 100 chars, with players all over the world that loves this series... they could've abuse the shit out of the players nostalgia!! And yet, THEY GIVE YOU EVERY CHARACTER IF YOU PLAY THEIR GAME!! Seriously, what the hell was wrong with Sonic Team?? >_>
How do you think any of those upgrades (light speed, shovel claw, etc.) would work on an endless runner? The great thing about Runners is how simple yet complex it was / is (it got revived, I don't know what to say oof), and how if you would be skilled at it, you could go forever. What, how would light speed help in Top Speed? How would you use shovel claw when going into a wall kills you? I'm sorry, but your idea feels too half-baked
I just saw this video and was intrigued by the game, so I decided to search for any progress made on the fan made servers, and found two projects: 1.- Sonic Runners Revival 2.- Sonic Runners Reloaded. Both seem to work fine, so I'll be playing for a while. Thanks for showing me this game, PatMac from 3 years ago.
I played Sonic Runners since the Japan/Canada release to the very last day. From my point of view and experience what happened to cause the demise of the game was a combination of 2 things: The main thing was the time you had to spend on loading screens, score screens, unskippable dialogs, looong initial launch screen... you could easily waste more time on menus than playing when you were learning and this drew back a lot of beginning players (and even veterans). The other was the short time of the events and its limited rewards in combination with the roulette. Yes it was mentioned, but the problem are not those things but the combination: I truly believe the roulette could have worked fine for real, no matter how many people trashed on it, just only if the events would have been 1 month long and returning every year, or at least giving a fallback option for the rewards. The 2.0 had also a big problem: it increased the idle time in menus and loading times, to the point I almost just played Timed because it had less dialogs. Just have to add: Runners is one of the best Sonic games (in its gameplay).
The whole situation around this game really sucks. I remember playing this game tons during its lifecycle, and was lucky enough to get to play the game before it's pre-worldwide launch. I LOVED the gameplay, the characters and callbacks, and the soundtrack. While it might seem controversial, I wasn't TOTALLY against the gacha system! If they had evened the odds for the playerbase and let you just buy them after their event, it would've been great! I spent HOURS on this game, and it easily became my favorite mobile game ever. I even looked past the bad character RNG because the gameplay was so addicting (Classic Sonic event, you still elude me). I would LOVE to see a fan server for this game get created, the competitive aspect of the game was half of the fun. I may not have explained my love for this game well enough, but I guess nostalgia is hard to describe. Regardless, I hope this game can return some day soon by the fans!
Oh god, I remember the 2.0 update. Until that point, I'd played Runners almost daily and that update was so awful that I deleted the game like two days in and never looked back. I wasn't aware they removed the spike walls later on, because those singlehandedly killed my enjoyment of the game.
35:17 I love how it's actually gigantic in the background 1:03:04 Not sure when the exact release date was, but sometime in late 2016 Sonic was added to LEGO Dimensions. Among his different dialogue options are things like "Lumpy Space Princess huh? Last time I met a princess I... We... You know, I don't quite remember. Never mind!" and "Hey. Vampire lady. Did I hear you turn into a wolf sometimes? I sure know that feeling..." These seem to suggest that (at least during the 2015-2017 era) Sonic was becoming more self aware and tongue-in-cheek about negatively received titles like '06 and Unleashed. In my book that's a good thing, gotta know when to laugh at yourself! On the note of LEGO, online games getting shut down, and the Club Penguin MMO, one of the most devastating game shutdowns for me was LEGO Universe. I played that game a ton when I was 11, but it was only live for 2 or 3 years. The music was phenomenal, character designs badass, and the story (while kinda basic) was much more intense than your average Power Miners or Space Police.
i can't believe i really watched this whole thing LMAO. but honestly ? you kept me interested ! everything flowed so well and i lost track of time !! amazing video PatMac.
I hated that roulette so much, it was near impossible to land on the character egg. I spent so many hours trying to unlock new characters. I think I only ever got 2. Rogue and Christmas Knuckles. Safe to say I was extremely disappointed. I still hate that roulette.
I found out about runners because of this video and I thank u for it. I have been playing runners revival for 2 weeks non stop and i love it. Once again, thank u so much
I found out of Sonic Runners because of this video. I'm really glad i did because I found that there was a Sonic Runner revival project as as someone who didn't know about the game, let me tell you that it is a great game and it's great that we are technically able to play it again

The game's main meat and potatoes is truly an eye of the beholder with is rock solid gameplay and layers of content it offered, especially it's chock full of fan service (some obvious and some so unexpected). To this day, I'm still deeply saddened by it's closure. The game died *SO* young. . .like. . .1 year young. It felt too soon. All thanks to it's unbalanced roulette and Red Star Ring systems. If only they listened to us sooner with these issues the game possessed, if only the greed didn't get to them, the game would of still been with us today. And because of all that, I want Sonic Runners to come back from the dead. I want the game to received redemption; a second chance to prove that it can improve. The succesor that is Sonic Runners Adventure is just. . .not enough. Why can't we have both? Since SEGA nowadays is so stupidly unpredictable and have this new found love towards us fans, I can see Sonic Runners return happening with enough fan support to back it. Do I sound like I'm in denial? Maybe, but really you never know. Same goes to me hoping for Sonic Boom's return. Speaking of Boom, there are a few things I would like to adress somewhat in this video: - 0:10 I wouldn't say Sonic Boom had "faulty success. It was more "middling" than anything if you add the TV show and the criminally short lived Archie Comic book. Other than that, the rest is accurate here. - 3:24 Here a strange fact: Sonic Jump Fever is . . .actually not longer available to download anymore ( including Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed mobile). Something that all of us should honestly let SEGA know about. - 4:14 Even though Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom is not as popular as it's predecessor, going by the Google Play Store, it's actually SEGA's second most popular mobile game to date behind it's predecessor. So the game is no slouch either. - 1:01:43 I personally woudn't say Boom is over just yet. Since the show is now available on iTunes, Amazon, and Microsoft Store, and is receiving two DVD's this year & mostly likely more, it's a possibility it could return for more seasons if they sell. Hopefully that will be case, but only time will tell I guess. - 1:15:42 This is a minor point, but this contradicts what you said about this game having a explanation on why the we still see the Wisps and other references to the lore of Sonic. Sonic Runners *is* a canon game. Unless you were referring to that the game does in fact include non-canon content on top of content that are in-canon within the game itself and the rest of the Modern Sonic universe. - 1:16:05 Hopefully someday Sonic Forces: Speed Battle will include an offline mode. Again, thanks you so much of this video. Let's hope that Sonic Runners will make it's return someday if ever.
@@shady5595 look up the Sonic Runners Revival Project on Twitter. Its in Alpha 4 now but while the Beta is Android exclusive the final version should be for Android and IOS.
Sonic Frontiers Spoiler warning Another thing about Sticks being main series (3 years down the line) is that in Sonic Frontiers' ending cutscene, Amy mentions sticks.
Sticks is like mephiles she was part of probably the worst sonic media ever like Mephiles, sticks was the only shining light in her media like mephiles, so because of that they are the only things coming out of there media into the main canon while sonic team acts like boom and 06 never happened which I agree
This game's soundtrack is incredible for a mobile game. Too good for a mobile game. Go Quickly and Beyond the Speed of are notable favourites of mine. I actually found the soundtrack through a TH-cam series and realised “Damn, what did I miss?” (Also, Sonic Forces Speed Battle is actually Sonic Dash 3)
This is my comfort video I already watched it like 5 times and still come back to it when I need something to watch while I eat or when I'm trying to sleep if I can't find any other video that interests me. For some reason this video has a special charm to it. Oh and just one suggestion I know you most likely didn't play that one but a simular video about sonic dash would be amazing. I actually played that one and still actively do so it's pretty special for me.
54:49 Gothic Amy's outfit looks more like the Lolita type. Which makes sense, considering the fact that the game is of Japanese origin. I'm no fashion expert, though.
This is easily one of my favorite PatMac videos of all time, and for good reason; it's nice to have such a big and detailed lookback at Sonic Runners. While I'm happy with the fan revival, I wouldn't mind seeing Sonic Team give Sonic Runners another shot someday, as unlikely as it is!
PatMac: "2.00 update added a whole bunch!" Me: Omg all prior characters and helpers are now purchaseable on the shop and they have some bug fixes and an offline mode!!! Sonic Team: SIKE WE MADE EVERYTHING WORSE AND BASICALLY ENDED OUR OWN GAME!!
1:01:33 That's roughly the same as her character description from the Sonic Boom website, including the part about being "close friends" with Amy. The weird part is, even in Sonic Boom, Stick and Amy never really seemed that close, at least, no more then anyone else
Sticks is like mephiles she was part of probably the worst sonic media ever like Mephiles, sticks was the only shining light in her media like mephiles, so because of that they are the only things coming out of there media into the main canon while sonic team acts like boom and 06 never happened which I agree
I think it would have been a better idea of the characters were always there for pulls, but events would raise the rates you can pull certain characters.

I uploaded Puzzle Fighter's soundtrack to TH-cam, and I get comments all the time from people who are disappointed that the game is now gone forever, at least as long as Capcom decides so or it gets a fan server.
Search up Sonic runners rivival on TH-cam you can play the game I tried it and it works

Over the years, datamining the archived assets did reveal some things which never made it to Runners:
According to the archived game assets, there was originally going to be a Sonic '06 event which would've introduced new buddies (and possibly Mephiles), but it never happened.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa fword
I just like many people, haven't heard of this awesome game until it was already done for. It sucks that they saw it as a "failure." It was way better then most games they made, and even any mobile game I've ever seen.

They're probably spent quadruple that for every new event."
I detest gacha (gatcha? gotcha?) games myself -- even if I am guilty of playing a handful -- but from an objective standpoint the game is too highly produced to be kept up unless it was insanely successful.

How to make the most hyped videogame ever:
1. Make a game in a dying franchise
2. Don’t reveal it until it gets leaked
3. Tease it, but don’t reveal the title/release date, only year and platforms
4. Announce it
5. Show a trailer a week or so later, showing what everyone expected/wanted
6. Release it a few months later
7. Have the best marketing at the week of its release
8. Adding as much content/fan service as possible
AND THEN SHUT IT DOWN
8 is literally Sonic forces Speed battle
9. Open up pre-orders
10. Delay it
11. Cancel the game

I miss 2015 😔

Runners Adventure is also significantly worse with way less content. It doesn't even have an endless mode. I was extremely disappointed.

I think they should've made like Final Fantasy Opera Omnia.
In Opera Omnia, you unlock characters by playing the main story or side chapters focusing on a specific character, and the gacha only give you equipments which you can equip on any character you want, but equiping the right things on the right chars gives then a boost in power.(eg: Cloud with his Buster Sword)
The same could've been done in Sonic Runners, characters are given by completing story lines and special events, and the roulette would give their upgrades. (eg: Sonic's Light Speed Shoes, Amy's Long Hammer, Knuckles Shovel Claws, etc)
Add the Companions and you get a roulette where no matter what they give you, you'd still get SOMETHING, and I'm sure as hell it wouldn't be as frustrating as the one they gave us.
You know... thinking about this kinda makes me proud of Square Enix...cuz they have fuckin' *FINAL FANTASY* , with over a 100 chars, with players all over the world that loves this series... they could've abuse the shit out of the players nostalgia!!
I just saw this video and was intrigued by the game, so I decided to search for any progress made on the fan made servers, and found two projects:
1.- Sonic Runners Revival
2.- Sonic Runners Reloaded.
Both seem to work fine, so I'll be playing for a while. Thanks for showing me this game, PatMac from 3 years ago.

The Lost (and best) Sonic Mobile Game!
Just have to add: Runners is one of the best Sonic games (in its gameplay).
the second the video started i was filled with a nostalgic reminder of the game.
followed by pain.
lots of pain.

A mobile game wasnt worth the much time
The whole situation around this game really sucks.
35:17 I love how it's actually gigantic in the background
1:03:04 Not sure when the exact release date was, but sometime in late 2016 Sonic was added to LEGO Dimensions.
BOI! That is not the history of Sonic runners! This is THE HISTORY OF THE ENTIRE SONIC MOBILE MARKET! Awesome video man! Really, REALLY love it!

*THIS👏GAME👏DESERVES👏A👏SECOND👏CHANCE!!!!! OMFG!!!!*
What a video, man! Thank you *SO* much for this! People need to know how ambious and *good* this game was. I can't believe it's already been *3 YEARS* since it's closure.
Sonic Runners is honestly the absolute *BEST* Sonic mobile game ever made. THIS 1+hour minute video proves this with flying colors.
Speaking of Boom, there are a few things I would like to adress somewhat in this video:
- 0:10 I wouldn't say Sonic Boom had "faulty success.
