    I feel like they are trying to capitalize off of the Rising of the Shield Hero's slave thing without actually realising what made it popular or interesting in the first place. I'll explain it further on a later date.
    Update to this comment:
    Hey, it's been a good minute and while I was busy I took some amount of time to think what I typed and how I should handle this. So I want to start off with the first things first: While I do think that the Rising of the Shield Hero is a major component into why the slave trend in isekai is a thing I don't think it's the pioneer of this trend (damn that's a sentence I have said, huh). Besides while I have looked a bit into this before making a further explanation, it's still a fucking youtube comment at the end of the day from an idiot by the time of writing it's like midnight or so. So don't expect any accuracies into potential timelines. With a brain tiring itself out included so the writing might degrade quite a bit. Oh, there will be spoilers for the Rising of the Shield Hero if you care for that sort of thing at all.
    So to explain my comment further, what I am talking about is that this manga was trying it's best to make you root for the hero in a very lazy manner by making it seem that he is a good guy, a saviour to each and everyone of those girls who end up want to be a slave. It's fucking stupid and uninteresting. Also, none of the girls (I have seen so far) were interesting with the little I have read. I have already forgotten who they were because they are just the protags slaves anyway, so who cares. So it's not lazy but also uninteresting in the isekai trends it was aiming for. I have read my fair bit of isekai slop but I just couldn't bear with this one, I was just so unbothered and uncaring.
    Now, the LN/Anime that I mentioned in there was the Rising of the Shield Hero. Why was that? Well, it was (from my memory anyway) this show/LN that was a major pusher for the isekai/fantasy tropes like the slave one and the betrayal one (Like seriously, there are a serious number of slop fanatasy mangas where the main mc is betrayed by the hero party and its topic worth on its own imo). But the the reason for it's massive contribution in popularity is because of it's own and also that it was written pretty well (atleast, raphtalias introduction anyway). For instance, the manga in the video wants you too root for the protag and that he is a "savior" because he is the protaganist and that's about it. Naufumi from shield hero in the meanwhile, has believable motivations as to why we should root for him and why he is a good person from the start. Before being summoned, he has helped out his brother getting over his substance, drug or alcohol addiction (not sure which one it was, but it was an addiction from my memory), he is friendly enough with others as to say hi to people walking by and social enough to start conversation. When he got summoned to the other world and became the shield hero, no one wanted to join until Myne did only to betray him and make him look as evil as possible. Leaving with Naufumi not only with no money, no people to help him out but also place to stay. He was completely shut out. So he desperately tried to level himself up (cause the 4 sacred weapons used a mmo based power up system and all that yap) using offense so he can kill things faster and get money and more power that way, but lacks the said offense in that time and since no one wanted to join him he had to make desperate calls. Which led to him buying Raphtalia, so that she can become the offense and he then can level faster. The two went on a pretty fun little quest together to level up and Naufumi took care of Raphtalia like a dad would their daughter. Which after the first fight with the Spear hero where Raphtalias slave brand got forcefully removed against her will, made her decide to redo the brand and remain as Naufumis "slave". So it's not that she became a slave and more of a reminder of how they met.
    Anyway, so what was the point of all of this fucking yapping I did just now? Basically, the reason why I think the slave trope worked pretty well in here had nothing to do with the actual trope itself just for the sake of it (I mean, there is filo aswell but she doesn't really know what the slave brand is anyway and Naufumi didn't use it at all since Raphtalia "grew up" as far as I remember so she couldn't have known). There were actual understandable reasons as too why it happened and the bond progression between Naufumi and Raphtalia was just simply fun to see. And then with (while odd to just rebrand again imo) a satisfying conclusion at the end of it which makes a decent amount of sense.
    But then there is the manga in this video. Why make a serious story when all you need is a popular genre and trend without making it actually interesting, then make it a soft core hentai (I'm calling it what it is) which is never taken serious anyways? That is what I meant with this stupid ass 1 sentance comment, but because of things I had to do I couldn't let all out.
    Aight I am done now. It's almost 1AM and I need to work tomorrow (or today if we are going technical), Peace.

      Ah, yes, a particular idea that one show makes it's entire premise about and puts at it's center to exploit all the possibilities that makes the premise of that particular piece of media, just to be taken to a completetly different one, where the author expects to get the same results despite not having such develoment, it happened to morally right slave harems, LiTRPG elements for no reason, nation creation with more characters than dialoge lines, and so many other tropes, only Xianxia may have worse things than medieval fantasy anime/manga/LN

    TV tropes describes the "cyclic trope", where a trope starts out in a piece of media, gets overused by other media, and is then deconstructed into something new, which is then promptly overused, before being reconstructed into its original form (if a bit different).
    Isekai is still in the "overuse the original incarnation" phase. Normally, I'd expect something like re:zero to be the deconstruction work that would change that, but it seems the isekai market has so much momentum it didn't have much of an effect.

    I've only seen, "male MC gets female slaves" done well like 3 times out of dozens of others. One thing they all have in common, is that the MC isn't playing the, "nice guy" archetype while owning said slaves. They also don't JUST have female slaves, and they're not used for harem work. They have clear purposes as to why the engage in slavery. Like, "if I don't get more man-power however I can right now, we're all going to die" kind of purposes. Few things grind my gears as much as an MC trying to be passed off as a savior or nice guy despite dabbling in the slave trade. Sure, the MC can still be a nice guy, but as long as they're not trying to gaslight buying slaves as a good thing, it can work out.
    Funnily enough, the most recent slave harem manga I've seen actually did a decent job. MC is generic loser isekai guy who buys two slaves for the purpose of touchy-touchy, but becausr he's so cowardly?, he ends up failing to fulfill his original purpose for buying them. Not only does MC admit to himself that it's bad, but the slaves didn't act like he was a savior right off the bat either. To the point that he treated them so well that they did end up seeing him as a kind of savior as a misunderstanding of him trying and failing to get "intimate" with them. It's still a relatively trash series, but it's the good kind, and was kinda funny.
    Edit* He ALWAYS fails, because he's dumb, and it's fkin funny.

    I could MAYBE accept this idea that Protag-Kun buying slaves is good IF the work is willing to show an actual understanding of the brutality of the ancient world. If, like in ancient times, slavery was ubiquitous and unavoidable, then perhaps the MC saving them from a worse fate and giving them a chance for a better life might be good. After all, there's only so much one person can do. But that would only work if Protag-Kun was a good man genuinely trying to do his best in a terrible world. Instead, it seems to be mostly used as an excuse to justify, even glamorise slave owning, which is disgusting.

In his old life, he did something physical as his main interest, so being unable to have a real body is going to be like torture for him. I want him to undergo an AM moment that makes him somewhat of a bastard, "morally grey" with moments of humanity. But, the thing is, his main mode of transportation is possessing people. This power will force him to peer into the thoughts, fears, and desires of whoever his bearer is, force him to empathise even as he is effectively lobotomising them. Also, you have to have a moment when someone who is possessed by a demon puts on the ring and the ring person and the demon both have an 'oh shit' moment before battling for control over the person's mind and body.
      You could have the person also fight them both, taking sides when one gets too strong, idk. Lots of fun shenanigans you can have with this premise. Just give the crest an original purpose and have people abuse it by using it for slavery. It’s not like the MC actually uses it for having slaves. Not that I wish it did. Well the power to steal the ability of whatever you kill isn't exactly op since you have to actually be strong to get good abilities

    • @ShogunPlasma
      @ShogunPlasma 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @maxwellwelcome6810 Not true. In some series you can sneak the skills and abilities from others very easily.
      Redo of Healer is one such example. All Keyaru has to do is heal the target one time and all their years worth of battle experience and techniques are his.
      In theory you could also get lucky and poach someone else's kill to steal their skills.

    I'd love to see a take on isekai where the protag stands up and actually tries to stop slave trading. You can even keep the part where every women he saves falls in love with him, I just want one story where the writer treats the girls as people instead of property. And if that already exists, I want more of it.

      There is the John Brown Isekai. It's a Webnovel but the Protag is a real historical civil rights fighter who gets isekai'd after his execution and murders the first slave owner he meets with a rock. I'll be honest I don't find the writing to be stellar but it's a fun premise.

    It's wild how much it's become a subgenre in the manga scene.
    Or just everywhere in general.
    The one non-morally bankrupt example I can think of is Mukoda from Campfire Cooking looking for employees. People explain slavery being the main thing, and so man's buys their freedom and pays them well/are free to leave at any time.
    Still can't believe he/Fel/Sui hasn't dismantled that institution yet though.

  • @ethankaryadi37
    @ethankaryadi37 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Idk about you guys but I just have this feeling that most mangas that involve the idea of a harem are doing a disservice to what actually can go on within relationships that comprise of more than two people. I feel like they downplay the very real possibility of how most people in harems or polyamorous relationships have worsened mental health problems and overplay how “fun” it actually is to have throes of women in your company. It’s willful ignorance at best and downright deplorable at worst. Some impressionable reader might actually believe that in order to be happy they must go out of their way to collect people as objects for their own purposes all because they saw someone in a manga do it. Yes, that does set a very socially irresponsible message.

  • @WorldsTallestLeprechaun

    LOL, I remember seeing this manga several years ago. I think I made it about...one chapter in, where he landed in the middle of a village of orcs, I think? And they were all the JRPG-Anime pig-man type of orc rather than western orc, but they were friendly to him which I thought at the time was unique.
    I don't remember now when it happened, I'm not sure if it was IN that chapter, or elsewhere, but I heard that he would end up just murdering that entire orc village for essentially no reason, and that immediately made me go, "Holy shit, I am OUT. I'm not getting invested in that kind of pizza-cutter edginess, no thank you." And I've had no reason to regret my decision, lol.
    Now, hilariously enough, to actually watch this video and see what he says about it, lol.
    EDIT
    Yep, sounds about right, pretty much. There's been a lot of manga who have been riding a train called, "How far can we push the NSFW envelope and still keep this mainstream enough to rake in the big bucks?" and it's pathetic how poorly done those mangas and animes are, even if they weren't leaning on the smut like a crutch. (Actually, not like a crutch. Bad anime and Manga are like the 5 foot tall, 500 pound Walmart patron, and the totally-not-pr0n is like the mobility scooter hauling their fat a--es around because they were too lazy to walk for so long that now they _can't_ walk on their own)

      Manga and anime used to be very different. Isekai's stranglehold on the genre didn't start until the release of Sword Art Online in 2012. I remember Code Geass being a big deal when I was a teenager. In the 80s, during the economic boom in Japan you could get weird projects by just out of art school types funded by an investor, leading to crazy stuff. Heck, before Go Nagai waged his personal war against parent groups in the 60s and 70s, fanservice was rare and considered lurid!
