Listen to this senior brother here, just the passive effects of reading such scriptures may enable your "Turning my Brain Off" art to evolve into a passive skill, ingrained deep into your soul.
I remember reading the first cultivation genre manhua... Main character being a douche, check. Main character beats up and kills hot women, check. Main character has anxiety talking to a woman he likes, check. Main character leveling up all by himself and only give noob advice to his two close friends, check. Main character does evil acts on villain characters, check. Main character wipes out entire side characters using demon arts, check. Main character gets called a pure soul/good guy/pure of heart after massacring all the people, check. Main character becomes divine and transcends physics and achieved nirvana (after killing bunch of people), check.
Before the isekai boom, Isekai was my favorite genre. I still love a good isekai that does it well, like Re;zero but man do they scrape the bottom of the barell now.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one either, there's just so much generic garbage in it all that I don't even want to write either of them unless I'm making it super subversive
Toxic? I've never read a genre so good for our society. Work hard, get lucky and you might have the ability to... you know... get away with a few things. The winner decides the morals really. And is it really wrong to wipe out a village if they are too weak to have an opinion? What is a wife if not... it seems I've been advised to not continue this sentence.
Strong female characters do exist in some cultivation novels. The problem is, after the author gives one good character development arc for the female character or for any side characters really, the author forgets about them and either never mentions them again or only have them occasionally appear. If you're looking for great character developments for side characters, I suggest Nightfall and Ze Tian Ji.
Too strong focus on the MC is really the archilles heel of those stories. Side characters hardly get any development whatsoever. All the best shows like Naruto put a lot of focus on the side characters rather then the MC.
@@zealgaming8161 Yeah they focus way too much on the MC in cultivation novels. The starting cast of side characters in cultivation novels are decent imo but they get forgetten pretty quick.
@@Great-Dao-of-EleganceThat's the worst aspect of progression fantasy. Power creep makes it essentially impossible to have any character development outside of the MC. Even Naruto and DBZ suffered from this by how 90% of the side cast became irrelevant in the end
@@xcell_r4thr87 That's why I'm more inclined to a balanced improvements between characters. Stories that have side characters be more active are always more entertaining than having the story solely focus on the main character. That's why people loved One Punch Man and One Piece so much. Saitama isn't always the main focus of the story and it shifts from one side character to the next.

Not only was your explanation of the yapping and story on point, but it also made me realized just how cliche they are to ever other genre of stories out there. We humans really can't make any new, can we?
What concepts haven't people done yet? It seems like every possible topic to make into a story has already been used at some point in time, so I'm unsure how there can be a completely original work.

I wouldn’t say wuxia are always better than xianxia, but on average that definitely appears to be the case. The more grounded a title and the more tangible the stakes, the more potential it has to not be dogshit. As for wuxia, the quality just depends on whether the author can actually write anything of substance. If you were to put it on a spectrum(wuxia - xianxia - xuanhuan) the closer a xianxia is to wuxia the less likely it is to massacre brain cells. The farther a xuanhuan is from a xianxia the greater the odds the author came up with something unique that might be worth reading. Reverend insanity is a xianxia that sits pretty close to wuxia on the spectrum which(coupled with good writing) led it to becoming one of the top 5 works in the genre. Lord of the mysteries and the legendary mechanic are xuanhuan that heavily distance themselves from xianxia(in differing ways) allowing their authors to escape many of the associated tropes and plot conveniences
The only thing he missed was when the divine painting/poem/book is so complex that no one can interpret it to get the secrets within, and then the mc glances at it for half a second and breaks through 3 stages
I recently started reading manhwa. It's wild when the translators change halfway through and they start writing in demon tongue. Every time someone is referenced their social status is brought up and half the writing is a literal translation of idioms.
I may have gotten used to idioms by now, but there's really no reason for translators to keep them exactly the same instead of finding reasonable substitutes
I realized I had a problem when I began to be able to understand Mother Tongue Language (MTL) without experiencing brain Aneurysm 😢 I can never go back 😭
That run down of the plot line of every cultivation story was so good. The only things that would be added later down the line are the MC hiding his power and acting as pathetic as possible so that he will be disrespected and underestimated only then will he proceed to kill everyone who disrespects him and their entire family lineage.
You have forgotten about the son in law that has a system or is a recarneted from a immortal or has memories from a past life that give them power ups like are candy.
Ancient Sovereign of Eternity is about the reincarnation of a toptier 9th realm sovereign, and he uses his experience to cheat up the ladder at every opportunity (though other tropes are still atplay, like coming across huge random treasures, every woman falling for him, and the endless diarrhea of terminology spoken whenever alchemy is involved. Still definitely one of my favorite reads, 100% top of the cultivation genre for me lmao
Oh yeah, that one's hilarious. That and Evil God (when translated well) are my absolute favorites. Just the right mix of comedy, coolness, and brainrot.

@@joshjo9405 It stands up to me. Even among villain series like Magic Emperor or Heavenly Destined Villain. They mainly fight against protagonist types of characters or people in power. But there mc killed that familly of mortals that was not even threat to him and he did it with such apathy and the way that they depicted it was the most brutal scene that i saw in cultivation manhua. It was told that mortals there are like ants and cultivators are of higher standing. Nobody cares if they die. Also mortals there fear cultivators and don t trust them. It was told in many other manhua about law of the strong but they really didn t show much of it.
If there was ever a genre I see as just Dragon Ball copies... Is this. Master Roshi taught that training wasn't just sitting and meditating for hours on end, rather he follow this one "Work hard, Teach Well, Eat and Sleep Plenty and never forget to play!" He believed in all his pupils and never believed they had levels or had to compare each other, the danger came from strong foes, unfortunately Akira left the old philosophy for what modern cultivation became, however he never forgot character development for many of his important characters. Hell look at Tien blasting Cell down, cultivation stories often dismiss all efforts of secondary characters as nothing.

It's about a dude who transmigrates into the body of a dying old man who has lost his cultivation, who is actually the leader of an unorthodox sect that has raised many powerful villains, and the few disciples he has left are plotting to betray him and take his treasures. So the story is about this poor guy hiding the fact that he is a weakling at death's door whilst he slowly learns how to cultivate from scratch and disciplines his villainous disciples whilst also securing their genuine loyalty to him and rebuilding his sect. Just felt like putting that out there.

There are like, 3 sub categories of cultivation (I’m saying this before I watch the vid) we’ve got the regular magic martial arts where the mc starts of a trash but encounters a great inheritance and rises to the top while provoking objectively evil entities and bagging the baddest of bitches (for me they get bonus points if the mc has a clearly inferior yet still comparable brother that has been around since early on instead of him being the sole decent man in the world) We’ve got the reincarnation stories where the mc was a peak existence or an utter waste that got jumped to death, back stabbed, and/or schemed against, but had a chance encounter with an incredible artifact/rare bloodline that let him revive or reincarnate at the lowest realm with objectively the strongest talent in the universe (usually the most talented alchemists as well, and maybe even weapon refining if the author wants to make them the indisputable best) And we’ve got the soul item style cultivation where in addition to martial arts, every one has a ranked spirit in their soul that predetermines their talent and their martial art affinity. This is different from series that have characters develop unique souls as part of their cultivation, as for most people in the story, their soul spirit’s strength is set in stone once they awaken it, but for our mc and maybe a rival that’s meant to be a lasting threat, their unique ability is their spirit can be strengthened natural alongside the typical cultivation technique, requiring them to keep it hidden unless absolutely necessary lest they attract the world’s power houses that want to steal it to break through their own bottlenecks
@@jemm113 it’s a solid story base. Although my mind was on stories like peerless battle spirit and divine soul emperor, solo leveling is a good korean take on the “mc has a unique improvement ability.” With things like solo leveling and a returner’s magic should be special getting anime adaptations, maybe something like tales of demons and gods can get a 2d animated version that’s more consistent with the art style of the manhua than the cg anime

Things I hated about cultivation manga/ novels is that problems starts cause of some Jade beauty, Usually she is what started the problem, and every character tend to be very shallow or arrogant for no reason, every young master is a spoilt brat the main character at times tend to be a hypocrite at times believing himself to be on the side of justice yet next moment he is causing a massacre killing innocents along in the process and still claim he is the good guy. Also Its doesnt matter who the person is as long as the mc doesnt like the person it would always be that person was the worst person or some stuff like that.
Read some good one, those usually the older one, like Record of a mortal's journey to immortality, Perfect World, A Will Eternal, Renegade Immortal, Jade Dynasty all doesn't have these problem. Newer novels nowadays are mostly just copy the formula of those succeeded old novel. Such as the one here you mentioned, it is a copy of what Battle through the heavens did, but none of them able to reach or go into details on the incident like Battle through the heavens manage, they all just seem like cheap copy.
About the justice thing.. I don't know what you are reading, but no MC in cultivation I read consider himself some saint or seek justice. Cultivation is about the world of food chain, it is wild and harsh, the strongest survive, it has nothing to do with justice, good or bad.
I loved this video honestly, I've akways found the genre of Cultivation to be ridiculous. Would love to see a video about the equally-as-trash genre of "betrayed MC with secretly OP ability gathers a harem and becomes a hero" because that one has to be just as if not more copy+pasted as the cultivation genre.
Thanks for watching and enjoying the video! Could you give examples of the type of story you're describing? Not sure if you mean the betrayal leads to their death and they reincarnate/regress, or just work towards revenge in the same life
@@samuek607 There's a very common trope in Japanese manga specifically that is aimed to make the reader sympathize with the MC and feel bad for them, most often it's the "betrayal" trope which is something like "Main character's party decides MC is useless and leaves him to die in a dungeon" or "MC's best friend kicks him out of party due to thinking his skill is useless" or, somehow also common, "MC's family disowns him because he received a 'useless' skill but it was actually secretly OP". Just like the cultivation genere you described here, the MC in these stories is almost always a man who ends up capturing the hearts of MANY women seemingly effortlessly because this appeals to the typical Japanese teenager's dream of being powerful and attractive to women, further enforcing the toxic Asian stereotype that women are only good for serving men and can never be independant.
@@KiraShizuminah that last part you said is very dumb, I've read some when the women were more useful than the MC, and in Japan even girls are encouraged to becone CEOs.

As a veteran cultivation novel and manhua reader plus a writer, from my experience I would say avoid them. I remember the first story I read, True Martial World. Next everything else is just the same. So why am I reading it or even worse writing one? I read a ton of them. And from my experience it’s like a hook. I want to see that moment which I envisioned if I were there. But the author didn’t include it so I searched like a tarnished soul one story to another. Until finally I fed up and started my own story on webnovel to help myself read a better story that I envisioned. I feel that the same is what other manhua writers do. And the worst thing is that our envisions are so big that we sort of intentionally do not add detail. Like the first world the most Xianxia writers show can be arranged such a way that many things can be added. But since MC doesn’t have time lots of stories just skip. Lore, character development everything is missing. Actually the main problem that I figured is to focus on MC. Both Xianxia and Wuxia do this, which basically limits the prospective view of a narrative story. Xianxia Novels can be good if they ever focus on changing the over achieving dream to a modest story of not focusing on MC but also giving focus on every character. And Finally the Masculinity in the series is very sad. True even I sometime think why introduce a women but then degrade her. The main reason is actually even more sad. As most authors are virgin. Although Martial Peaks author actually was a virgin who later married but even he destroyed one of the timeless beauty in his series. The very first story I read True Marital World actually the only story I read who has a pure love. The FMC lost in time and space and probably the half of the series the MC was alone never loving anyone and cultivating alone. He later found her at the very end of the story. At that time I was a noob and thought it was good but then all the harem shit destroyed my taste. Anyway if you read through this many rambling of mine than I advise you too avoid them. No goods come from them even if the story is luckrative. It will destroy your time. But if you still wish to venture please avoid harem genres and anything with long chapter list. Cause none of them are good. If your story is good 600 to 700 chapter is enough. Like Coiling Dragon one of the best shit that ever came from cultivation stories. And if big chapter story I would only recommend Forty Millennium of Cultivation, which is a Scifi story.

There are many good cultivation novels with a female protagonist such as "Ascending, Do Not Disturb", "My Disciple Died Yet Again" or "My Master Disconnected Yet Again" and they are some of the best stories I've ever read.
You failed to talk about how the personality of the protagonist and antagonist also don't always correspond to being a hero or a villain. The protagonist is the main character but they don't always behave as a hero, and often behave just as bad if not worse as the villain. MC seduces Girl but is more than willing to throw them away once he achieves the next realm, or gains the next treasure, giving only the surface excuse that they will return. Or how in the quest for revenge the MC lets hundreds of thousands die at the hands of others because of some consequence to his actions, only to swoop in and "save the day" gulling people into worshiping him. Or the worst example as the MC will murder the entire sect or clan even if they only really wanted to kill one person, everyone else is just tangentially related to the "villains"

One thing I've made clear to myself when looking for a manga/manha/manhwa is that if there's "cultivation" in the title, then don't read it, it will most likely be boring, not funny and generic as F. @@JohnDoe-vv9zp Reverend Insanity is THE best villain novel. Nothing I can recommend can ever surpass RI in terms of Plot, character writing, world building, etc. It can get quite a bit dark at times.
My main point of complaint on the genre, other than repetitive, is that most of the stories doesn't seem to even know how cultivation works other than workout everyday and read mantra to get stronger. I really love the concept of cultivation, a way for a mortal to ascend to higher being like evolution in isekai but through a spiritual and martial discipline. It makes sense for the ungrateful nature of human to be wanting more. I want to make a similar story, but I'm a little afraid that it would appropriate the culture it came from. Also, the fact that the stories can go on until the end of the world. I know a lot of xianxia story have an ending, most of them that have a novel version, but it's usually after very long and very repetitive events. Addition : If you would like to read some xianxia story, i don't know if you'd like it, but Tales of Demons and Gods atleast seems a bit different with the incorporation of regression plot line and they try to make the women not just a damsel in distress. Also there's Cultivator Chat Group, a story about Song Shuhang, a mere mortal who accidentally added to a group of cultivator. The story is more comedy, but it reminds me with Yozakura Family because how they incorporate the wild side of the story(Spies and Cultivators) into modern world. There's also Soul Land. I don't know if this can be called xianxia because it have a quite different system and seemed a lot more like isekai with a touch of cultivation.
I like "Martial art master" from same author of cultivators chat room for no other fact that the story don't expand to "the end of the world" territory
don't be. "appropriating" the cultivation genre is a braindead take and can never be done because they already appropriate cultivation into a fast food genre (isekai is a fast food genre imo). Lots already mock it by using systems.
I like how you're not hating a particular group of people (women, men, author etc.) but said negatives/positives avout everyone. I understood the example perfectly, I think im cooked
Hmm, if I had any advice to give, Senior Brother... While the comparison with more popular works is a good way to lead the audience towards your point, using actual plot points from actual books/manhua might've also helped. Maybe consider a video analyzing a single story as a companion video? The thumbnail/title are pretty good, but they did draw me in because I knew the genre already. Leaning into that by using actual in-genre sources might be good. I did love the skit, good work on that. Another interesting topic might be the weird eugenic bloodline obsession baked into the genre.
I've stayed away from Cultivation as a whole. My few attempts to try a web comic in the genre ran into the frustrating wall of questionable translations and vague unstructured visuals. I do enjoy Wuxia cinema though, and it's kind of sad learning that Xianxia is basically Wuxia with the fun parts removed. Particularly the misogyny, Wuxia is surprisingly flexible with who can be powerful - age, sex, and status often don't matter - which gives stories a great deal more life and colour to them.
I've devoured more tales than there are stars in the night sky, with my appetite as insatiable as a dragon seeking the path to immortality. My reading speed is like a cultivator in the Nascent Soul stage, racing through realms with the swiftness of a lightning tribulation-100 chapters or more in the blink of an eye. When it comes to the cultivation world, I'm drawn to the Wuxia path like a moth to a flame, the balance of martial prowess and wisdom resonating with me like a harmonious Dao. Xianxia, on the other hand, is my go-to when I'm just passing through the Mortal Realm, scrolling through those endless power-ups like an ancient sage brushing aside mere mortals. Realms like Pinnacle of Immortal Emperor or Ten Divinities Peak Nine-Star Martial Deity? Those are my guilty pleasures, the divine pills I can't seem to resist, always pulling me back for another taste of their absurd, otherworldly elixirs.
My brother in Dao, do the Murim Genre And I really liked how the video was edited (even the bits with Photoshop, you made me chuckle), your humor was very enjoyable, and you're clearly knowledgeable of the genre.
Demon tongue? Fam has never advanced beyond the grade school realm. Language is imagined and propagated. Skit was funny and the cliché/plot holes is really needed though.
I'll convince you Xianxia has a lot of potential with a single title. Try reading the novel "A Regressor's Tale of Cultiavtion". I know, I know, the title turns on most red flags imaginable, but I swear, it's absolute peak. Right now it's a novel only, but a manhwa is in the workings. I recommend reading the novel with all my heart. It's the single proof that it's just the authors that are lazy and do not try hard enough to bring out the potential of XianXia.

Side characters hardly get any development whatsoever.

The subtitles in the beginning skit were funny as heck 🤣🤣😂🙌🏾My roommate started watching 12hr long videos of random cultivation series and from what I saw it felt just as repetitive as isekai, didn't know isekai might be more creative with the new gimmicks every new series with the same circular starting town though.
There are like, 3 sub categories of cultivation (I’m saying this before I watch the vid)
we’ve got the regular magic martial arts where the mc starts of a trash but encounters a great inheritance and rises to the top while provoking objectively evil entities and bagging the baddest of bitches (for me they get bonus points if the mc has a clearly inferior yet still comparable brother that has been around since early on instead of him being the sole decent man in the world)
We’ve got the reincarnation stories where the mc was a peak existence or an utter waste that got jumped to death, back stabbed, and/or schemed against, but had a chance encounter with an incredible artifact/rare bloodline that let him revive or reincarnate at the lowest realm with objectively the strongest talent in the universe (usually the most talented alchemists as well, and maybe even weapon refining if the author wants to make them the indisputable best)
And we’ve got the soul item style cultivation where in addition to martial arts, every one has a ranked spirit in their soul that predetermines their talent and their martial art affinity.
More like it has reached isekai level burnout brainrot before they reach other side of sea
Many isekais are also cultivation. At the core it's all the same shit, power fantasy, only instant or slightly delayed. All very cringe.
@@thatoneguylegit9219 that last one was Solo Leveling to a T 😂
@@jemm113 it’s a solid story base. Although my mind was on stories like peerless battle spirit and divine soul emperor, solo leveling is a good korean take on the “mc has a unique improvement ability.” With things like solo leveling and a returner’s magic should be special getting anime adaptations, maybe something like tales of demons and gods can get a 2d animated version that’s more consistent with the art style of the manhua than the cg anime

This wandering taoist has come across great fortune it would seem. Respected senior has truly understood the breadth of heaven and earth. At first I was unsure of your lecture, deeming you a frog in a well who drew snakes yet added legs, but it seems this junior had eyes yet did not recognise Mt. Tai. In the time it takes an incense stick to burn, you have given wings to a tiger with the flick of your sleeve, akin to crushing dry weeds and smashing rotten wood. By digesting your profound insights, I would achieve twice the results with half the effort, advancing by leaps and bounds. I have learned that there are indeed mountains above mountains, heavens above heavens. But this daoist has a concern that you may be playing lute for cows, and coax toads seeking swan meat to be cast like a clay ox entering the sea, enduring mountains of blades and seas of fire to find a single hair amongst nine oxen.
Read reverend insanity

Okay, I've got a clearer idea of what you mean now. I'll try to see how I can word that for the next video poll

Whats your take on "I shall seal the heavens" and "skyfire avenue"? The last one I find quite good cause its shortish and is quite clean of the infinite powerup stuff. Theres a limit

Glad you enjoyed it!
I mean each novel has it’s own preferences on how they want to do cultivation be a thing in the story
Write what you want. Dont stifle yourself and get down to it!
it's quite silly to say that you're "appropriating a culture" it's more like you're appreciating it
I like how you're not hating a particular group of people (women, men, author etc.) but said negatives/positives avout everyone.
Beware of Chicken. It's a good one.
Try Reverend Insanity very unusual xiaxia with unusual power system.
My brother in Dao, do the Murim Genre
And I really liked how the video was edited (even the bits with Photoshop, you made me chuckle), your humor was very enjoyable, and you're clearly knowledgeable of the genre.
Demon tongue? Fam has never advanced beyond the grade school realm. Language is imagined and propagated. Skit was funny and the cliché/plot holes is really needed though.
First video of yours that I've seen, really liked the skit
I'll convince you Xianxia has a lot of potential with a single title. Try reading the novel "A Regressor's Tale of Cultiavtion". I know, I know, the title turns on most red flags imaginable, but I swear, it's absolute peak. Right now it's a novel only, but a manhwa is in the workings. I recommend reading the novel with all my heart. It's the single proof that it's just the authors that are lazy and do not try hard enough to bring out the potential of XianXia.
