Yeah, to me it sounds like the base idea could do wonders if it was treated like a Chinese version of a western rather than… a systematic order of tropes being executed
@@McGunbrella The webtoon hasn't gotten there yet, but at a certain point our favorite Ugly King tags along with Junghyeok to a world that's literally just called "Murim", where everything runs off of wuxia martial arts tropes. This was actually very informative as to the origins of the Martial World and WHY it has the names that it does. And also why it has the social structures it does out in the fringes of civilization. I have seen other videos that give a broad explanation and some of the history of the Wuxia/Murim genre, but this is the most in-depth for its format that I have seen. So, well done!
Wuxia genres tend to be more rare now with boom of the cultivation genre as xianxia and xuanhuan are more mainstream and often allow for creative elements, Wuxia tends a little more grounded with less literal magic. An issue I take at times with the Korean wuxia of Murim in newer depictions is that it often depicts martial arts to be equal or superior actual magic, which often feels like they wanted to create xianxia instead. Korean xianxia is basically nonexistent. Murim stories can be interesting, but often times the setting is basically the same all throughout with the differences being mainly names of techniques. It's often the same families with a different twist which can get repetitive like the Tang clan, Jegal clan, or Namgoon. Chinese xianxia classics are quite old and you don't really see them any more nowadays. Even chinese television has shifted more towards the xianxia side.
wuxia is just a plagiarized low copy version of xianxia or xuanhuan etc. Korea can’t keep ignoring its roots. I’m not Asian, but I know this much. In conclusion, wuxia is just a copy made by Koreans. Humans tend to be territorial, for a fact.

The Murim/Wulin with substance is tends to discusses about personal accomplishment (not unlike purpose of life), politics and the meaning of belonging in a community/country. It alludes to history and is not difficult to find similar structure in reality. If one closes their eyes a bit, this is particularly apparent in tech communities. You have different sub-communities surrounding different tools and skill sets - not unlike sects. Individuals having the potential to rise above your class and hold power (see Indian tech community). You are rewarded with strength through hard work. And people of different skills hold STRONG ideologies in how to approach and practice their vocations. Which often comes into collision.
I’ve found two murim series that I have enjoyed. Murim Login is probably my favorite of the two as it’s kind of a mix of the three pillars of Korean fantasy. Reincarnation, Murim, and gate/hunter. The main character is the classic f rank hunter. He ends up finding a vr pod that he sleeps in to escape his roommate’s snoring which causes the pod to activate sending him into the world of Murim as the no good second son of a medium sized sect. Though several life threatening encounters and several training montages he learns skills and levels up enough that he’s able to log out. When he wakes up the 3 moths he was in murim translated to 6 hours in the real world. His skills from Murim carry over to the real world where he is able to seemingly gain wealth and power overnight. I think that part of what makes me like the series is that the dude literally locks himself away for training and never feels like he’s the biggest fish. He regularly requires aid from others in combat has to balance two almost separate storylines.
@@cmbaz1140 Murim RPG simulation, it also keeps the sprit the genre of the main character actually has to do work to get stronger but with the gimmick of being able to save and reload. It also keeps from drifting too much into power fantasy by having only 3 save slots and limited respawn tokens with the only way to get more being beating powerful opponents.
I actually keep up to date with that one! Thought about saying a few words about it, but it had way too many non-murim elements to judge it by the same standards
Had this video recommended to me on Discord just after I started the series Cradle and it’s amazing. Really explains the core and idea’s of Murim/Wusha. Can’t wait to see more from this channel
18:19 ain't no way bro used heavenly demon cultivation, the story where mc slowly understands that systems and wicked people are all bad and you just need to do your best whilst going with what your heart tells you (Love the video tho, imo wandering warrior of Wudang would fit more along with many other 'funny, evil' mcs)
Also the one where the main OP cheat power the MC has is respawning after death. Sure he gets strong but he has more failures than any other manhwa MC I have ever read about and he earns his strength by literally dying.
I highly recommend Martial Wild West. Despite the fact that it's setting is furthest from the classic wuxia story (because it's literally set in the wild west of the United States), the actual story and the spirit of the manhwa is very close to those of a traditional wuxia story.
Bruh this video fr amazing, really good editing too. Kinda sad you did not talk about Volcanic age as i think it fits with your ideea of how a murim story should be, as the mc fights and grows stronger as he has already seen the cruel and unjust world he lives in thus he strives for righteousness by defeating the dark heaven. But overall great vid bro keep it up😘
Glad you enjoyed the video! Didn't really count Volcanic Age because while it does carry the tone and direction of a good Wuxia story, it 100% fell into the trap of treating Martial Arts like pick-up superpowers.

It was really funny when I realized that all the murim manhwa I've read take place in China, straight up, and not some mythical martial arts fantasy land. I think I realized this in Infinite Leveling in Murim when there was a plotline where they were invaded by Japanese pirates.
Hobestly great work my man, just came from the cultuvation video and i gotta say loving the variation in tone and cadence you had in this one, really hope to see the channel continue to grow in future!
Some other unorthodox groups would be the Green Forset, a large group of bandits, and the Northern Sea Palace, a group martial artist that cultivate ice based powers.
Those two are the main ones but other than them there is also the Sun Palace and the Beast Palace but those are seen a lot less compared to the former two which already aren't seen all that often
The Northern Sea Palace was left out intentionally because I felt like it was too rare, but the Forest Bandits I genuinely forgot, so I only added that quick text on screen for them. My bad
I feel like Northern Sea Palace doesn't count. Not sure about exact geography, but I always got impression it's completely separated from Central Plains where murim exist.

Return of mount hua sect has everything that is proclaimed and needed for a top notch murim world, it is the peak murim potrayal. Upon reading furthur into novels, concepts of chivalriousness and justice, fear and strength , blood gritting hard work and life threatening battles, philosophy of tao to govern oneself rather than rules, and many more other concepts are heavily discussed over time. Its themes are so deep , that it requires pondering and analysing contradictory yet true nature of oneself including the search for tao and the path. Not to mention another most important thing, Main character chung myung is not the only well written character, there are dozens if not 100s of really well written characters that have their own thoughts, philosphy and value who run like a real person and not some mindless NPCs. Emotions and feelings are present which are not single minded like revenge or chivalry but potray wide range of values and aspects of feelings from sadness, funny, happiness, wrath, angerness etc. Also , the people are not black or white, but shades of grey. Villians are so damn well written, that some are loved(i wont spoil) on equal level as MC. And above all, this is the funniest murim novel i have ever read. In the novel , there are dozens of moments where i nearly died by laughing for hours due to its funny scenes.
Also , for me personally upon reading nearly most murim and wuxia based stories, manhwas, novels , these three on different setting haven been peak level for me 1.Return of mount hua sect: Pure murim theme based 2.Reverend insanity: Peak wuxia and solitary path 3.The heavenly demon cant live a normal life: European fantasy mixed with murim , so unique yet extremely well written Others that i enjoyed but not enough to read novel , good but not peak for me due to some lacking things: Northern blade, wandering wudang warrior, pearless dad, nano machine, gosu, reaper of drifting moon, murim login, modern man in murim, chronicles of heavenly demon, mokhyank ,magic emperor, tales of shining sword , and etc etc which will be long list to go on .

The thing about power scaling is, when you made the character able to scale mountains with ease, there's hardly any way to calculate or gouge anyone's power. The only way to know is when they actually fought each other.
Jingyong and his compatriots are probably the most important people that made Murim a phenomenon outside of China. I don’t know, something about the author owning a news paper company and forcing people to read his novels by printing the chapters in the newspaper helps. The “sects” came from this period of murim evolution, since these writers of the time is quite literally talking about gang warfare in Hong Kong at the time. The sects tough exists historically, they were meant to be analogies to various gangs in Hong Kong at the time.
Legend of Asura: Venom Dragon, stayed true to the Wuxia origin. He had a drive, he wasn't OP and wasn't born with privilege. No system or cultivation power fantasy.
I have that a read, and I do think you're right. Can't remember cases of martial arts being treated like super powers, so it probably falls into the right category 👌
you should def read peerless dad, to me it is by far the best written murim comic out there, has adult themes, political points, the character development is incredible and every main character is memorable.
Yeah I thought he was gonna bring up Peerless Dad instead of Legend of The Northern Blade. Guess it's somewhat subversive on the "orthodox vs demonic sect" aspect
I recently tried to get back into it! I read it so long ago that the details are unfortunately all blurry now, and I didn't feel confident talking about it in a video
@@samuek607 it is a perfect time to start as the comic just ended and it ended perfectly, I feel no bitterness or that the author left it hanging for s sequel.
Some other notable unorthodox factions are the the river bandits of the Zhang river, The mountain bandits of Nok-rim, and there's almost always some kind of faction whose name always changes that becomes the leader of an alliance of these unorthodox factions. This faction is almost always led by strongest unorthodox martial artist who usually embodies what the unorthodox faction is all about, going from the bottom of the world to the top of the world through great effort and luck. There are many notable examples of murim manhwa of the Unorthodox leader starting off as a mere beggar or waiter who through great effort and luck crawls his way through many life and death struggles to reach the top of the world. He's never a good person, but he's not necessarily evil either. He just cares more about what benefits himself the most instead of what benefits the world. This is why the Unorthodox faction can end up allying with the Orthodox or the Heavenly Demon cult depending on the manhwa. It's not about morals or justice for them, it's about which faction will give them the most benefits should an alliance form.
LOTNB (peak) Gosu Yongbi Mount Hua Murim Login Heavenly Demon Cultivation Simulation Return of the Crazy Demon Worthless Regression Infinite Leveling: Murim (peak) Volcanic Age Chronicles of the heavenly demon Path of the Shaman/Wandering Warrior of Wudang The Breaker
Yeah, the earliest works, around 40s set up the martial arts system, particularly the inner cultivation and physical skills. The 50s created the 9 sects 1 triad rule. The 60s peaked with Jin Yong and Liang Yu Sheng. Then Gu Long came with his unorthodox styles, emphasizing humanity and emotions in the typically macho-nationalistic wuxia genre. Then Huang Yi sealed the deal with his 'mid-high fantasy' wuxia in the early 90s with a little bit of Xian's cultivation and transcending from the mortal realm. His story usually ends with some characters reaching the enlightenment and transcending to other realms but he always refrain from continuing his works after that point. Then lots of web novels authors always wrote the stories after the transcendent and 'nerf' the MCs, as they went into a new world with higher baseline, which is kinda beats the purpose of the classic. Anyone coming after that basically builds their story based on these tropes.
For a murim story, I think Return of the Crazy Demon is my favorite. It's a regressor story, and thus far there's been only two people I can think of who the mc couldn't beat to death. But I think you might (at least decently) like it off your talk of Legend, as a big part of his thing seems to be the sort of chivalry you're talking about, though he doesn't seem to believe so due to the other part of what he does, and he seems to be trying to find out what a "chivalrous warrior" would actually look/be like. There's also the bonus that (as far as I can recall), it gives more the feel of "actual people" rather then "kowtow to this bastards son" caricatures Personality-wise, he's certainly very different from every other cultivator mc I've ever seen. It's kinda like reading a story with a calmer, more introspective Deadpool. I haven't read it in a couple months and my memory seems to have taken a recent downturn, so I can't explain it much better then that, but the reminder will have me going to reread it. If you take comment section suggestions, I hope you enjoy it
I actually have read it! It was just so long ago that I don't remember anything 😔 The problem with reading so many stories for videos is that I can't really commit them to long-term memory unless they get a video.
@@samuek607 If it helps, I tend to write stories I like in phone notes. Whether I randomly remember or come across them while reading/writing other things, it helps me check back every now and again - and by including the link, it's also a faster way to reset them if the phone resets itself
If we want to talk about the good times of the Wuxia comics/Hong Kong comics… that is *check notes* 30-40 years material… But if you want to experience it; Storm Warriors is a must read. Warlords series is legendary; spanning 13 arcs and various side series within same universe over 20 years but at this point in time it's a lost media. But i say this; if the works at those time inspired Fist of North Star, you can expect shit's good.
I think a good murim manhwa that is a very good example of wuxia altho not really known is "Chronicles of the heavenly denon" and I think factions like the northern sea Ice palace and Yangtze 18 pirate stronghold should have been in this vid
A personal recommendation of mine is the manhua called "it all starts with a mountain". There's a lot political corruption and how the foundation that society is putrid. There's also the consequences of action
It hits all of my soft point power progress fantasy: check ROTK type political conflict: check Water margin's hero gathering: check JTTW's style mythical story telling: check is it absolutely best, probably not, but for me it's chef kiss
I aknowledge that Northern Blade is incredible story, but I myself was really dissapointed with mc when he went hoes over bros and where it lead. I would still recomend it but only begrudgingly. On unrelated note, while watching this video I was wondering which murim stories still fits to themes and came with these. "Record of the Swordsman scholar" and "Tale of Scribe" : They are both basically same story, but involve leaving "civilised" influence of court to Jianghu due corruption and upholding chivalrious ideals. "Return of the Mad Demon" : It has op protagonist who regressed, nonetheless out of all murim stories I read think Zaha is someone with most positive influence on his surrounding world in very delibarate (if erratic) maner and have some interesting insights on matters of chivarly. Mc also happens to be objectively and clinically insane nd founder of Hao (Ignoble) clan. "Peerless Dad" : There might no be lot of chivalry per se, but it is story of (initially) small guy struggling in wilderness of Jianghu to fight for place in world his family and himself can live.
Nah. You just don't like women in manhwas. That's all to it. In the legend of the northern blade, the Hoe you're calling is pivotal in the story. She isn't added for the fan service. Choosing bros as a what if scenario is not going to stop the central alliance in finding ways to eliminate Jin and the people around him.
@@Graymeyne 80-90% of manhwas and manhuas I read is ONLY for it's female characters. Also never said she was added for fan service, nonetheless Jins choice destroyed everything he worked to that point and cost life major character with whole life in front of them for someone he barely knows. It was a terrible choice.
@@TheTenzen12 barely knows? That woman is one of the two first people that treat him well. One is his martial uncle who brought him supplies and that woman who you were calling a hoe. A hoe that eventually accepts her master's teaching to save Jin in exchange for losing her memories of him, turning her into a killing machine. Yeah, that hoe. Again, even without her., the orthodox sect (in this case, the central alliance.) is still going to find a way to kill Jin. It isn't because of some hoe. It is because those people are very important to Jin and he's found a purpose in saving them. You can substitute Ha-seol (the one you were calling a hoe) with anyone in his party and Jin is going to act the same way. Every time.
@TheTenzen12 this is kinda super late comment but i just want to say that she isn't someone he barely knows, she is his whole reason for surviving and getting better in the remnants of the Northern Heavenly Sect, since her appearance Jin Mu-Won began getting better and finally had an opportunity to look forward to another human being other than his servant who was mostly on trips to bring him supplies. Indirectly her being there also caused his path to become clearer when the Demon of Chaos showed up + the Witch of White Night taking the girl with her in exchange of letting him live. From then on Jin Mu-Won finally gets the push needed to begin his training in the rubble left behind by the Demon of Chaos. Honestly the major character that died wasn't so major and his foolishness was the cause of his own death, not Jin Mu-Won's actions.
Again! As an aside note, when I thought about it, I suspect "There is Bamboo in your Chest" means; "Your chest hair must grow in rediculously thick if you've attained this level of manliness".
from what i know, The Heavenly Demon Divine Cult is based on the ming cult, which also a fictional group on those old wuxia novel. It was inspired by the Manichaeism, an actual gnostic religion. Basically it's a belief that we are all demons or impure being and only through enlightment we could become pure and attained heaven. Also, on some stories, heavenly demon cults are basically just satanist who whorship Mara (demon) instead budha.
You are right. The earlier fictionalized version of it started with Jin Yong's the cult of Ri Yue (the cult of sun and moon). In his work, the MC is the leader of this cult and overthrew the Yuan dynasty, then one of the generals, the then first emperor of Ming, set him up and he decided to quit the job and let the cult leaders fight among themselves for the thrones. Well at least in the story, the winner had the courtesy to name his dynasty, Ming, which is actually the combination of Ri and Yue, Sun and Moon's Chinese characters, hence the 'Ming'. It was of course fictional and there's actually a confucianism classic referring to the Ming as an auspicious word, hence it was selected to name the dynasty. At one point in Chinese history, Manichaeism was heavily suppressed and bad names were being called. Sometimes they were called 'vegetable demon cult' for the veganism they preach. Guess who was the most aggressive suppressor? The first emperor of the Ming dynasty.
as I already wasted my time on these, I would gladly share my research to decipher the Murim faction to you guys first of all is "what is the nine Sect/school, one Union, and Five Families"? The one union is easiest, it's the beggar union/sect/gang, but in some setting with multiple union/gang, Iron Palm Gang often appeared frequently as the classic Low level thug but big in number The nine sect, on other hand have multiple version, there is five, seven, and nine version, Shaolin and Wudang is staple, Emei and Kunlun appeared more often in manhua, with Huashan and Zhongnan is way more famous in Manhwa, then we have the filler, Kongtong, Diancang, and Qingcheng, with some source also substitute one of the sect listed before with either Hainan/Tianshan/Penglai/Quanzhen they are all based on buddhism or daoist monastery, usually located in mountain Five Families is kind of mess because Manhua and Manhwa seems to be disagree on which family is the five families except on Nangong/Namgoong The Hongkong manhua list : Nangong(Southern palaces), Beihai(Northern Sea), Dongfang(The east), Ximen(Western gate), and Chen. it seems to be based on four directional term, and popularized by Tony Wong's magical weapon series, which is one of the oldest example of wuxia manhua. The Korean Manhwa list : Namgoong/Nangong, Zhuge/Jegal (probably because Zhuge liang of ROTK), Tang of Sichuan, Murong(Jinyong's influences?) And Hubei's Peng Nangong is probably there because it's one of the birthplaces of martial arts, Tang of Sichuan is based on this one story of this poison master lady who operates in Sichuan and bear the surname of Tang, Murong is the classical asshole family in Jinyongesque story. Then when there is imperial force, they also include some semi fictional historical renowned Family like Li of Longxi, Yang military Family, Zhao of Hanyang, and Liu of Han Heavenly demon is based on this concept of demon who lives in the realm of desires and try to tempt human away from the enlightenment sometimes it's also substituted with fire cloud demon god or Black sky evil king as the Big Bad Guy of murim world divine doctor is also appeared often, the OG is Huatuo of ROTK but they are usually is this all-cure super doctor
Sounds like you could do some interesting stuff if you treated Murim more like a Chinese version of a western, like how the Japanese samurai and American (and Italian) western genres are mirrors of each other. You’ve got noble bandits, different gangs with complicated relations to each other. Make it a Chinese western!

I was trying to make a video that didn't really exist anywhere else. Glad you liked it!

So kinda like og Assassins creed, cool.

Also , for me personally upon reading nearly most murim and wuxia based stories, manhwas, novels , these three on different setting haven been peak level for me
1.Return of mount hua sect: Pure murim theme based
2.Reverend insanity: Peak wuxia and solitary path
3.The heavenly demon cant live a normal life: European fantasy mixed with murim , so unique yet extremely well written

That's actually really interesting to learn. Thanks for sharing!
Legend of Asura: Venom Dragon, stayed true to the Wuxia origin. He had a drive, he wasn't OP and wasn't born with privilege. No system or cultivation power fantasy.

There are so many xianxia and wuxia novels that have served as inspiration for these Murim mangas and manhwas
There's also the bonus that (as far as I can recall), it gives more the feel of "actual people" rather then "kowtow to this bastards son" caricatures
Personality-wise, he's certainly very different from every other cultivator mc I've ever seen.

I either forgot that part, or didn't get that far 😭

Um... I'm not to sure that was the idea
from what i know, The Heavenly Demon Divine Cult is based on the ming cult, which also a fictional group on those old wuxia novel.
The first emperor of the Ming dynasty.
as I already wasted my time on these, I would gladly share my research to decipher the Murim faction to you guys

The one union is easiest, it's the beggar union/sect/gang, but in some setting with multiple union/gang,
Iron Palm Gang often appeared frequently as the classic Low level thug but big in number
The nine sect, on other hand have multiple version, there is five, seven, and nine version,
Shaolin and Wudang is staple, Emei and Kunlun appeared more often in manhua, with Huashan and Zhongnan is way more famous in Manhwa,
then we have the filler, Kongtong, Diancang, and Qingcheng, with some source also substitute one of the sect listed before with either Hainan/Tianshan/Penglai/Quanzhen
they are all based on buddhism or daoist monastery, usually located in mountain
Five Families is kind of mess because Manhua and Manhwa seems to be disagree on which family is the five families except on Nangong/Namgoong
The Hongkong manhua list :
Nangong(Southern palaces),
Beihai(Northern Sea),
Dongfang(The east),
Ximen(Western gate),
and Chen.
it seems to be based on four directional term, and popularized by Tony Wong's magical weapon series,
which is one of the oldest example of wuxia manhua.
The Korean Manhwa list :
Namgoong/Nangong,
Zhuge/Jegal (probably because Zhuge liang of ROTK),
Tang of Sichuan,
Murong(Jinyong's influences?)
And Hubei's Peng
Nangong is probably there because it's one of the birthplaces of martial arts, Tang of Sichuan is based on this one story of this poison master lady
who operates in Sichuan and bear the surname of Tang,
Murong is the classical asshole family in Jinyongesque story.
Then when there is imperial force, they also include some semi fictional historical renowned Family like Li of Longxi, Yang military Family, Zhao of Hanyang, and Liu of Han
Heavenly demon is based on this concept of demon who lives in the realm of desires and try to tempt human away from the enlightenment
sometimes it's also substituted with fire cloud demon god or Black sky evil king as the Big Bad Guy of murim world
divine doctor is also appeared often, the OG is Huatuo of ROTK but they are usually is this all-cure super doctor
0:42 Okay I have a new series to search for
Volcanic Age
So what you´re saying is there is enough content to make explanation videos for every sect, cult or group throughout the three paths.
Sigh... Guess I'll have to dive into the comments on your Murim, Wuxia, and Dungeon Crawler videos with a big response. But that's a task for another time.
I'm sending this jade slip in hopes of saving my dantians.
I shall kowtow a thousand times for my ignorance senior brother, I wasn't aware of the level of refinement of your cringe. Please no more, my core can't take another second.

While my views align with yours, I fear the 'again' faction outnumbers us so fiercely that I may have to concede
The best quote in this video is "Ken-chan regretting a promise"
I haven't been sure until now if anyone has ever cared about my salutations at the end😭
Need more genre analysis now
It hasn't even been an hour, give me a break 😭
