      Thanks Nick. It was the first time I've put together an intro like this so it's good to get some positive feedback about it.
      Took me a while to figure out how to do this but now that I have the settings (crop, resize, position) saved as a preset I should be able to do more stuff like this in the future if/when it makes sense.

    I would consider utilizing the push to talk function instead of windowswapping each time you want to speak.

      Cheers mate. Yeah, I'm very new to Discord so I'm only now figuring out how to use these type of features. I've also been looking into adding the Discord 'Voice Chat Overlay', so I'll hopefully be able to incorporate all of that in future streams/videos.

    These are the types of games i rage quit on lol.....everyone was supposed to block red all game while fighting for road and army. Orange was def red's cheerleader

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was definitely one of the most frustrating games I've played in a while. There was probably an orbit or two where it made sense for everyone to go after me, but the fact of the matter was that I had 3 settlements on the board and the other players were acting like I was on 8-9 points.
      Orange was funny for sure... he literally said that "Red can't win without army" and then went ahead and helped them get largest army. 🤦‍♂️

  • @armantgloglu8640
    @armantgloglu8640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Since both 10 ore and 10 wheat was only blocks, i think you could consider citying up 11 9 4 maybe? Hard game to win when you can put your first settlement with 4 roads

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely made a few errors this game and the main one was not going for the 5/11 as my first settlement, especially after I was able to steal a Sheep.
      The idea of upgrading the 4/9/11 only occurred to me In hindsight, but you're making a very important point in terms of considering the hexes that are going to be blocked and which spot makes the most sense to upgrade in that context.
      It's a nuance that I think about during games but probably not enough and definitely not 100% of the time.
      👍

    Honestly, I understand both points of view here.
    On one hand, you definitely made yourself an easy target in the early game through the mid-game by going for development cards AND setting yourself up for a Longest Road run. Surely you had to recognize the intense scrutiny such moves would inevitably cause and why you were an unmistakable threat throughout much of the game. To that end, I totally get why your competitors targeted you often throughout much of the game.
    On the other hand, one enormous disadvantage you had was the lack of an improved trade ratio combined with coordinated numbers. Your numbers were rolled quite often throughout the game, but they probably also should have taken into deeper consideration the very high likelihood you would be sevened out multiple times throughout the game, as well as be forced into some costly four-to-one trade dilemmas. So I agree those considerations should have factored a bit more into Gold and Grey's decision-making.
    So yeah: I simultaneously understand why you were frustrated, but also agree with your rivals that you were an undeniable threat throughout the early and mid-game. Sometimes games are like that.

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely misplayed the early game here. I should've just gone for the 5/11 rather than give it to Orange, which would also give me access to the 8/10 later.
      With that being said, the way it played out justifies their going after me for about 2-3 orbits. I recognised the problem during the game when I was joking about taking longest road.
      So I'm the first to acknowledge that I messed this up, but from the other players perspective (trying to be as objective as possible) the problem was that they didn't adjust to what was happening on the board until it was far too late.

    • @MACMAMI
      @MACMAMI 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TryNiceGames I definitely agree on your last contention. If I were Gray and Orange, I would have targeted Red and you roughly a 50/50 split in the early game, but tilt increasingly Red deeper in the mid-game onward.

  • @justinyu3766
    @justinyu3766 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh man that's tough, it's hard to get out of that when it's 3v1.
    Was wondering what your thoughts are on starting 3/8 as first placement, and 9/4/2 as second placement, and cut black to the 6/2. You would have strong diversity in resources and numbers, and able to utilize the wood port down the line if you extend to the 5 wood.

    • @bruceworden4478
      @bruceworden4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that's enough production to win. You never know for sure, but any time you're under 18 to 20 points of production, you're going to have a hard game. That setup is only 15 points, red had 19, orange had 20, black had 18. You just get overwhelmed in the long run. Also, trying to cut someone off when you play 4th is very risky. A 7, or a trade, and your entire strategy goes out the window. It's safer to plan a plough when you go 1st or 2nd.

    • @justinyu3766
      @justinyu3766 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bruceworden4478 Fair point. As black is going second, I wouldn't have thought they would get the plough in time. Your production skyrockets if you get the 6 wheat though. Your backup plan is extend to the 5 wood and play wood port. Personally watching the way the game played with original placements, it took too long to get the 3rd placement imo. But I agree with you there's huge risk involved.

    • @bruceworden4478
      @bruceworden4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinyu3766 That's a good point, it's always good to have a backup option. You just have to make either of the options happen fast enough to keep up with the other players. What really surprised me was Orange's second pick. It is clear from his first pick that he was going for the sheep port (what I would have done, too), but then why the 3-6-11 rather than the 5-6-11? The occasional 3 ore isn't going to make up for twice as many sheep and many more expansion spots (3-4-6, 6-11-12, 9-12) later in the game after the sheep port was secured. I just think it was a weak choice that may have cost him the game. Especially with red (ultimately) protecting the 5 and 6. Weird game.

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the idea of going for the cut-off you're suggesting would make more sense if I go with the 4/8/3 and then do the 9/4/2 and to try and get on the 6 Wheat.
      I mentioned the cut-off idea briefly during the setup but figured it was a bit too risky since (as Bruce mentioned) I'm playing 4th, so (A) I would likely be first to get robbed and possibly lose my Brick. (B) Someone could trade them the card they need for the 2-3 cards they'd be willing to throw at it or even get lucky in the first 2 rolls and get it themselves. (C) And perhaps most importantly, Orange might leave Black the 3/9/11 because it kills 2 players immediately and/or they negotiate something before placing.
      I think my biggest mistake this game was not going for the 5/11 as my first expansion. Once I stole the sheep I should've realised that I was almost certainly going to win that race, and there was no benefit to being nice to Orange there... he obviously didn't do me any favours this game so my peace offering didn't pay off.
      😅

  • @CrimFerret
    @CrimFerret 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's pretty much impossible to win when it's 3 against 1. You still did amazingly well. If red had been even slightly good at the game, they wouldn't have needed the help to win once black made that somewhat questionable 2nd settlement pick.

  • @payamb5039
    @payamb5039 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The real question is... what was black's strategy?

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, as soon as they placed I thought it was terrible. Not just in terms of hurting my agenda, but they weren't really putting themselves in a position where they have a chance to win it.
      🤷‍♂️

    • @benharris3285
      @benharris3285 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TryNiceGames what else is black supposed to take? 8/4 is probably their best try. 8/10 is probably their only other option but 3 points of ore is a bit weak. I'm not conviced 3/4/6 was the correct first pick for black but given the position I can understand why they went 8/4.

  • @JohnSmithEx
    @JohnSmithEx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    38:07 That was a critical moment in the game IMHO. Heading for the 3:1 port was a highly desirable move economically, but also highly risky strategically, because it forced you to take the longest road too early in the game. If I was in your place I would have probably made the same decision, but on hindsight, with the posterior knowledge of your opponents' reaction, playing the opossum may have increased your chances of winning this game. Unfortunately in the late game the dice didn't make you any favors either.

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, I definitely regret building that road. The issue is that I didn't really have many other good expansion options at that stage, so I was almost forced to continue down to the 3:1
      With all of that said, I think my biggest mistake this game was not going after the 5/11 as my first expansion. Once I stole the sheep I should've realised that I was almost certainly going to win that early race.

    Wow. They were really good at ignoring the obvious. Also, a disgusting amount of extortion!

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a great quote for this:
      "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak."
      Orange seems to be the type of player that operates with two mouths and one ear...
      😂
      The extortion definitely became comical this game. Every time someone used a knight or rolled a 7 it turned into a hostage crisis. Just have them block the player/spot that they want or target the player that has the specific resource they need. Why would anyone want to consistently guarantee the robber get the exact card they want + a potential bonus steal? 🤷‍♂️

      This was the first time I tried doing an edit like this so I honestly wasn't sure whether it was a good idea when I started putting it together. Black takes the brick port? Are you sure this is the “Champions League”?

    • @maff_
      @maff_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was gross. Those guys seem stubborn and like they haven’t played enough games to understand positions. They’re scared of you getting army and road, when they should be giving you army and then orange take road.
      Poor game by your competitors, sorry you had to suffer through it!

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Matt, it was a painful one indeed.
      😒
      They split the 'Championship League' into 3 divisions based on strength/experience and this was a "Division 1" semi-final match, so not only the strongest players to partake in the league - these guys had to win at least 6-7 games out of a set of 15 to qualify.
      I definitely didn't play an optimal game here either - although I think my initial setup was decent considering my options. I don't like judging people based on one game but with that said, there were a few moments during the match where it felt like I was playing with people who don't have a "deep understanding" of this game, so I definitely agree with the "big picture" points you made in your comment.
      😉👍

    • @benharris3285
      @benharris3285 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What else is black supposed to take? I don't think brick port is the worst pick tbh. At least you have wood to pair with the brick and you can do something.

    How frustrating....You were so obviously pointing out their unequal treatment. You basically had no chance in this game. I have never seen such uniform blocking of a single player.......WHEW ....HOW HORRIBLE AND THEY WERE LAUGHING.

  • @bruceworden4478
    @bruceworden4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ugh. Frustrating game. Do these people not realize the power of OWS? That first pick should have made him the target. Even if you had road and army you would have had a very tough time getting to the win with the rolls that came. Your opponents were definitely not of the highest caliber. As you said, they basically gave the game to red. Orange could have won, but he focused on you rather than the real threat. Frustrating. Hope you're feeling better. Stay away from that Covid.

    • @TryNiceGames
      @TryNiceGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Bruce.
      I live in Australia so (thankfully) it's very unlikely to run into Covid here at this stage.
      Thanks for the wellness wishes, I'm feeling a bit better every day but still not 100%
      🤧
      I agree with everything you said about the game. Orange and Black both finished with 7 points so their strategy obviously didn't pay-off. I was honestly surprised by the level of play since I assumed the players that would have qualified for the semi-finals would be much more "dialled-in" to what's going on.
      The fact of the matter is that I had 3 settlements on the board and they were talking about "End Game" positions and acting like I'm on 8-9 VPs. 🤷‍♂️

    • @bruceworden4478
      @bruceworden4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TryNiceGamesyeah, black and orange were nuts. Even when red had two cities, they were worried about you and feeding him dev cards. Feeding the OWS player (with a city on his big OWS spot, fer cryin' out loud) is a recipe for suicide. Nothing you can do in that situation. Just lose with dignity, which you did.

      @bruceworden4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-JoMar28- Sorry, didn't mean to insult anybody. I just would have expected top players to recognize the real threat from the setup. Ivy could have definitely won if he/she had focused on red, not blue. Maybe. I'm sure you've watched DyLighted play the pros. Those players are brutal about that. They know who is really ahead even when the score doesn't show it or the board doesn't show it. But the proof is in the pudding as they say: black and orange lost by three points to red while the player they were worried about ended up with five points.
