    As a pressed steel toy collector, Nylint's version of a truck-crane (definitely not a shovel) is by far the best in my opinion: way more realistic than Structo or Tonka's mobile clam/dragline models of the time. I've looked at a few early versions( some came with 10 wheels, others with 6)but sellers always want way too much for them. What sellers don't realize is that Nylint made a ba-zillon of these "Michigan Shovels" in updated versions over the years, so they're not scarce by any means of the imagination. You did a nice restoration job and the labor of love that you put into it makes it all that much more gratifying.

    This is how the designers imagined their product looking like when being sold, but clearly this product never looked this good originally. Really a grade A refurbishment! Fantastic resto as usual.

    I wondered what happened to my crane from when I was a kid! I think you found it. 😁😁😁 I was born in 1954 so I probably didn't have a first generation one but I recognized it immediately from the video thumbnail. Thanks for the video! Cheers! Bob 😎

    Oh plus the decals that went for it I need as well. Thanks

  • @daveogarf

    I HAD ONE OF THESE AS A KID! I remember taking it to Show and Tell in third grade, and demonstrating how the bucket closed by itself.
    As suggested by someone else, a small media blaster would help a great deal in stripping those complicated shapes, like the booms.
    As I recall, Nylint didn't have the same quality that Tonka and some others had. Never, ever managed to break a Tonka toy. It may have been cheap and slapped together, but it was still a fun toy. (PS - my decals were straight).

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nylint seemed to me to focus on detail and accuracy in re-creating toys of real life machinery, where as Tonka designed toys that were a more impressionistic version of the machine. That being the case Tonka could take liberties with the design and put some extra strength in areas that may need it while lowering the fidelity of the details. Nylint toys had some great detail, but that often meant certain pieces were smaller and thus lighter and more "breakable" with rough play. I had both brands, as well as Buddy L. I found them all to have their pluses and minuses in regards to durability and realism.

    Wow I am amazed at how well that aircraft stripper worked. Also I'm sure that thing looks better than it did new, as evidenced by the original sticker placement. You know what people are always saying about how things aren't built as poorly as they used to be in the olden days... 😏

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is why I pointed it out. Google image search and you will find a bunch of origionals that have mis-aligned decals. Even new in box examples have some poor decal placement. Also the interior of the engines house was not painted at all, so it was very rust in their too

      Oh man... I did not know that.
      I hope that you did not take that as a criticism, not my intent in anyway.
      It is something that I like to see; not what you should do or show, during the videos.

      You have amazing outcomes, with the toys that you refurbish.😀

    Be cautious with the rattle cans. When spray-painting outdoors the moisture/humidity in the air can condense into the paint stream and really mess up a good painting effort. Indoor air is generally less humid. Use an appropriate exhaust system, though. Another great project.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in a very dry climate so that is not as much of an issue. I do have a small bench booth I built but this is too large for that. I am going to have more painting videos in the future so stay tuned. If you watch my Tonka Forklift and Tonka Road Grader video's you can see some Air Spray HVLP techniques used. I do also have an HVLP Air-Assist Airless pump system but that is a bit of overkill for small projects like this.

      2 light coats with 20 minute flash time between to get full coverage, then 1 heavier coat that smooths the finish out.

    If you can't find a steering wheel, perhaps you could take the wheel you have and have it 3D printed.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of anyone reproducing those. I have some friends that do some casting at home and thought about doing that, but I am not really set up to sell anything.

    • @bcgrittner
      @bcgrittner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the beauty of 3D printing. Your original part with be scanned in three dimensional space and then reproduced layer by layer .0001 each layer. A single item may not be economical, but 3D printing people could possibly add your wheel to a larger order. I can see it's not absolutely essential, but it would add that last finishing touch to the truck crane. Keep up the good work. Watching these toys come "back to life" is quite enjoyable.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I understand that, but I don't have access to that type of 3D modeling and printing hardware. It has crossed my mind to partner up with someone, but this is just a hobby and personally I would rather have a nice cast piece. Thanks for watching and more videos are coming, but there is plenty of back log for you to watch.
