Hey everyone and welcome back to another restoration! In today's video I am restoring a classic Tonka mobile clan. This thing was completely rusted over but complete. I had way too much fun playing with this thing once it was done!

I've always been fascinated with clam bucket cranes. I had a cheap plastic Tonka toy clam bucket crane that didn't last very long lol. I would've put some hours on this one! My favorite part about it is that it has real tandem rear axles.

They don't make toys like this anymore. The Tonka trucks and heavy equipment from the 1950' S to the early 1960 'S was the best. This brings back slot of memories.. thank you for the video. This rig was one of my favorites.

Great restoration. I feel I must comment on the quality of the original design by Tonka. Putting the rear wheels on their own truck so it can move over terrain, the design of the crane mechanism, the vents on the cab, etc. They knew how to make an excellent product.

I restored the same truck for my granddaughters as a Christmas present 3 years ago along with a Tonka front end loader, A Tonka road grader, and a Structo dump truck. All the toys were about in the same shape as yours when I started. On the Tonka Clam, I used "Mother's" polishing paste on all of the cadnium plated parts. The only parts I needed to buy were some glass, wheel covers, and the stickers. To keep the crane house from flopping around on the frame platform, I used body washers with wide nylon washers and adjusted the lock nut snug. It was a lot of work with the "Mother's" to polish all of that out but it came out pretty nice, with only a few black stains showing. I used dish soap with a tooth brush to clean the tires, took a long time, but they shined like new when I was done. One trick I learned is to boil the tires in water, to make them soft, before you assemble them . The wheel covers go on much easier without breaking the little flange that locks the covers in place. I also boiled them to disassemble. I air brushed all of them in safety green, probably was never an original color, but they looked ok.

A neighbor kid had the full highway department set, the snowplow with fancy dump box, the grader, the bulldozer and lowboy, and probably this crane. I thought they were so cool but never got one.
They looked so real back then in full Minnesota Highway Department orange paint and markings.

Eh, these were the cheap toys of their time. Before these they were cast, these are bent sheets of metal. And if you check older Tonkas, they still found ways to cheapen them even more, look at these wheels. Rubber, later ones are plastic with a rubber trim that holds the metal, because they couldn't fully replace that metal insert. But they still cheapened the process and sold them at the same price. Later other corners were cut and so on.

What a great video. So awesome to see these classic Tonka trucks being restored to their original condition. I hope that some young kid gets to play with them once again to experience the fun and joy I had as a kid playing with them. I know its a shame to scratch and dirty them up but thats what makes Tonka a Tonka. Excellent job on this one and by the look of that dump truck that hauled the mud bee nest away at the end of the video you still have some work to do. Take good care and thanks for the great video.

If I may offer a tip: I’ve had a lot of success removing old Tonka hubcaps by waving a heat gun, on low setting, on tires. This makes them soft enough to bend so I can pop out old hubcap without any tire damage so I can reuse old tires. I cringe every time I see your screwdriver. Keep up the great work!
