    One of the things I appreciate most about your videos is knowing the finished product is going back outside to be played with as it was intended.

      Thanks. That is why I do nearly all of my projects (motorcycles, cars, ect..) it is to get them back in service. I also like to try to be as informative as I can to inspire others to break out and try this type of stuff themselves. Hopefully they will improve or build on these videos.

    A splendid piece of restoration. I do appreciate the narration. I learned a lot. By the way, I still have my Tonka fire truck from my 8th birthday, 62 years ago. Many thanks!

    I enjoyed the video. I've seen in other restoration clips where the tires are stamped in wet white paint so the Tonka logo will stand out again.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have done the white lettering. I did it on all the other ones I have done. I guess this one the rims were so roached I kinda just forgot. However the lettering would be gone by now. It has seen a lot of play since I did this. Those pallets have been hauled all over the garden this summer.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'd like to do another bike but man the work involved to film it is kind of what is sort of preventing me these smaller projects are easier to get out in a more timely manner. I have a clutch video two of them actually doing. A goal sometime is to do a trio of Kawasaki triples that I have they run but they just need a little bit fixed up there more like survivors I also have a 68 Avenger in similar condition not a full Resto but just a cleanup and replacement of some cosmetic rubber parts

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truth is, I dipped this entire toy in rust removal soak (video seen here th-cam.com/video/N_GH6HwTD7k/w-d-xo.html ) about a year before I made this video. They had rusted again from being played with outside. I wanted to just finish up the video, besides this toy went right back outside in the dirt like it is supposed to. A minor detail I guess. My restorations are not shelf sitters, they are designed to put them back in working play condition.

    any suggestions for color choice for an oversized Tonka dump truck from the 70’s? Original was very intense yellow.

    • @The_blindpizzaguy1300
      @The_blindpizzaguy1300 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep the original color, there is no need to change it. It’s supposed to be caterpillar yellow. Because it is modeled after a caterpillar Quarry truck.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a tip. Caterpillar yellow has changed over the years so there is several different shades. International Harvester yellow would probably work well too, but not the CAT "Challenger" yellow. Both of which tractors I have the real thing. You can see those on my channel.

      There are different formulations of the Kleen Strip, the one in the gold can works better than the others depending on the paint technology. In this case enamel. Check out this video th-cam.com/video/J3vz28eu22M/w-d-xo.html at this time stamp. I test 4 different strippers including the Loctite one I used in this Tonka video. Soaking the parts in vinegar for couple of days will take off the paint and get the rust out of nooks and crannies - plus it’s non toxic. Works well on plated parts too. You can then zinc plate or paint the axles, etc. Nice job.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could have plated the old parts, but this is going right to the sand box and it can always be done again in the future. I did dip this forklift about a year ago, so what rust you see is a years worth before I got around to this project. th-cam.com/video/N_GH6HwTD7k/w-d-xo.html

    Nice refurbishing job. However the paint you used looks more Chartreuse then yellow to me. Have you even thought about safety yellow? It is real yellow colored to get attention and seems to be pretty close to Tonka yellow. Either way, nice job. I have a few old Tonka toys I plan to refurbish myself. Maybe I will post them on here. JMHO

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yellow is pretty darn close to my eyes in person. Matching to an unexposed portion of the toy for the original color. The color temperature of my lighting, my camera's CMOS sensor (which is 5 years old) and the color accuracy of your monitor/phone screen as well as TH-cam's encoding of my MP4 is all going to affect how you see the color. Also it seems that "Tonka Yellow" seems to vary a little bit over the years depending on which era it was produced. A safety yellow seems too bright to me when I did spray outs of various "yellows" But I digress, I really want to see your work so post it up! I will watch the videos.

  • @tootall5559

    in my experience, super glue isn't very good for wood. I do use it on wood sometimes, but I put on a dab of wood glue first, then a touch of super glue nearby to kind of act as a clamp. for that purpose, it works okay.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will work just fine in this application.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thejunkman probably but people shouldn't get the idea that it's the right thing to use on wood in every case.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For model building it is a staple, but yeah if you are going to build something more substantial I would use a wood glue/PVA. I wanted a quick drying solution and then using the brad nails, it will last long enough for some rough play.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thejunkman yes with the nails added, it will do. Without the mechanical fastening, I don't think it would hold up long. People say all superglue is the same but I've found that not to be true. Some is better than others. Bob Smith industries super glue is much stronger, it's the stick your fingers together kind, almost as strong as the original super glue. I bet most don't remember that, when it first came out, if you touched your fingers...or anything else, with glue on them, they were stuck. The government mandated that they weaken it. There is medical grade they used to use to close wounds quickly in the field hospitals of 'Nam.

    • @thejunkman
      @thejunkman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Super Glue is a generic term. There are many types of cyanoacrylate's as you know. I know all about adhesives, as in my "real job" I work with all types of adhesives for various bonding applications among other things. Some of the things used in the industrial space is amazing.
