  • In this video you get to come along and watch as I replace the fuel "module" (aka: fuel pump) in this 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4. Last week I took a look at this vehicle for the customer to diagnose the EVAP leak and found it to be leaking from the top of the fuel module (due to rust, go figure..) Lets get started!

    Thanks so much Eric. On my way to the parts store to pick up a new fuel pump assembly for my 08 Silverado, and you probably saved me an extra trip for a lock ring… I’ll grab one while there. Just discovered your videos, and color me impressed. One tradesperson to another, you are an excellent journeyman/teacher. Please keep up the great work and continue educating us home mechanics that are trying to save a few bucks in labor. I generally don’t subscribe to channels, but I subscribed to yours, you’re my 3RD subscribe… EVER!

    Another great video, clear, concise, and excellent production value. Nice glasses.
    When I did my fuel pump, for the same reason, a few months ago the top of the tank and lock ring was as dirty as this one. A tool that came in handy for the lock ring was the OTC 6599 Universal Fuel Sender Lock Tool. That tool with 1/2 inch breaker bar enabled me to very easily spin off and tighten the lock ring.

    I can remember what a pain the rust was when in lived in Vancouver BC Cars would evaporate before your very eyes. Now I live in Vegas there is never any rust on anything I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer and it is completely rust free. I recently did a brake job on my truck and my brake lines looked like new.

    Awesome 👍 - right on about the prop shafts not needing a specific position , ha your the first master tech that did not mark the position. Also the two piece shafts are balanced independently and assembled with the centre hanger just prior to install, they are not shipped to the assembly plant in one assembly with the centre hanger . Lots of trany, wheel bases , and axle combos make it easier to do at the factory. Been a while since I put prop shafts on the trucks at GM but all the shafts do not require any orentiation. As you noted it's the cleaning of the contact points that most miss that cause a driveline vibration. Ha I still have guys telling me to put wood under my batteries stored on a concrete floor to prevent a discharge. Man you make the pump install look so easy but for a guy in the driveway get prepared to put a lot of money in the cuss jar :)

    • @WizzRacing
      @WizzRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Steve Rob Funny you mention the battery myth is still around. I still hear it as if batteries haven't advanced in the last 90 years.
      I also told someone how hard it was to replace a fuel pump assembly. They went and bought 4" hole saw and cut a hole right over the pump. Then installed a stainless steel plate over the hole. As some car makers actually do to gain access to the fuel pump. He was happy as a geeky child for his ingenuity. As it had taken a total 1.5 hrs for him to replace and 5 breaks included.

      +Claude “Reviews4U” Rains Funny you mention that, my sister's 2000 Impala has an access hole in the trunk :) Just had to pull the pump because of that drinking straw look a like that joins the pump and fuel lines together. It wiggled it self right off! Chevy and other auto makers should have kept that as a convenience.

    In response to the rear axle vent hose comment, I personally asked a former GM drivetrain test and design proofing technician / engineer about that. He said that in the mid 90s they located the vent hose up higher on the off road package trucks (ZR2, ZR5, etc) compared to 2wd and non off road package 4x4 trucks. Then in the midst 2000s anything 4x4 the vent ran up higher than 2wd, and in the last few years all the trucks 4x4 and 2wd all have the vent hose in the same place soley for ease of assembly and fewer different parts at the factory

    Eric you saved me the cost of a fuel tank on my Canyon. I live in NE Ohio and my fuel pump rusted to death. The ring was so rusted that I thought I wouldn't get it off, but your air hammer trick (and a LOT of penetrating oil) got it off after almost an hour of hammering and soaking.
    You do good work and give excellent tips. Thanks a LOT!!

    Great video. My van needs the fuel pump changed again. I have to get a new tank and another fuel pump. It damaged 2 pumps in 2 months. The mechanic suggested getting a new tank. But l do like the van, so, l have no choice. Is a 96 1500 Chevy high top convertion van, and the pump is exactly like the one on this Silverado you are working on..

    Too bad that U-joint didn’t have a grease fitting on it. I’ve dropped needle bearings from inside of those U-joint caps after removing them to pump grease into the inside of the fitting. Nice straightforward job with a couple of useful shortcuts. Thanks for the video. On my ‘99 Tahoe, there is a fuel filter external to the in-tank filter which owners are advised to replace every 30,000 miles. I neglected to change mine until 63,000 miles and only did it as routine maintenance.......it was almost completely clogged with black crap. Glad I did it. Dr. K.

    You mark the shaft in relation to the yoke for one simple reason. In our business, if anything can go wrong it will. If it came in not vibrating then I put it back exactly like it came in just to eliminate one more possible reason why my boss can say that a customer complaint is my fault.

    Always amazes me with all the engineers that these huge companies employ why they cant see some of the problems before hand.
    Coming from someone who's had a shard of splintered metal stuck into my eye, glasses are a hassle but man the pain and cost of removing metal from your eye is bad, to say the least. The bad thing is when they pull it out the salt from your tears run into the little hole left from the shard, and the pain is almost unbearable.
    I still forget to put on glasses sometimes, I just keep several glasses around the shop just to try and remember, The memory of the pain always help, it was many years ago, but the memories are still fresh.

    • @charlesmiller5078

      The metal was a bad thing, I was driving in 4 penny case harden nails into concrete walls, putting up wood strips for dry wall, and my boss thought I wasn't going fast enough, so he pulls out his hammer and starts driving the nail from a side angle, not straight on. A piece broke off and stuck me right in the eye, I went straight to the hospital, it was sticking out just enough to catch my eye lid every time I blinked my eye, so I was a bloody mess by the time they pulled it out, 3 weeks of recovery. Hey but I did get a cool eye patch..and a new job.
      Your job is dangerous, you may not think so cause you know what your doing, but your eyes can not be replaced and just how would you aim a gun if you lost one.

Well later that night when I got back to the house, my eyes were on fire, like a hot poker was inserted into them, went to the hospital, this time I wore 2 patches for, around a week, Thankfully no real damage. Graduated welding school top of the class...and never welded for a living.That was 1973.Lesson Learned.....Mind Your Own BusinessI still have the same Helmet........42 years old, and works great.

      I swear Charles you have some of the best stories lol. I remember putting on sunglasses one day and watching my dad weld for a while.... well you can imagine how I felt that night lol. I learned a few things that day. 1 was when your dad tells you not to do something..well listen. 2 there is a difference between a really bright blue light and UV rays. 3 watching a pretty blue arc hurts like hell and it is a pain and itch you can't escape...

    Great work, Eric! Just replaced a seeping gas tank in my old MPV...it's on the third one now!! Fuel "module" is still 26-year old original, with a fresh pump just to be safe lol. I promise to swing by your shop and grab hose dusty video files one of these days. Got my ass kicked his week by a crank no-start "Acura from hell"...look for that case study to be up soon!

    LOL OSHA APPROVED BUCKET! I installed commercial doors and hardware for a fairly large union contractor. After several years of standing on a plastic bucket the safety director visited the site I was installing doors on. He informed my superintendent that I was violating OSHA regs! I spent the next weekend creating an OSHA compliant bucket complete with handrails, outriggers, a step and a tie off point. I placed it in the safety directors office early on Monday morning. It sat in that corner for several years! As a bonus, the next week I took possession of my very own, brand spanking new 4’step ladder that didn’t squeak, not even once!

    I worked on the Oldsmobile assembly line for 6-months at the "engine drop." We built one car every 40 seconds. An assembler, next to me, would grab a RANDOM driveshaft from the shipping container and install it, right after the engine was dropped into the frame. No attempt to "match" it to the axle nor to the transmission. The Olds was a "big" car but the shafts were tiny compared to this truck shaft, thought it is clear they weighed about the same.

    Nice job sir. Been chasin down a PO-442 in '03 Corolla. Thought I had it good, but after 170 miles came back. Checked the 2 solenoid/valves, replace rusty over-fill valve gasket and of course the fill cap. Pretty rusty around my fuel sender unit as well. Guess I need to invest in a smoker, $100 on Amazon.

    I pulled the bed on my Ranger when I replaced the fuel pump. Didn't want to mess with the straps and bolts holding the tank because of the amount of rust on them. Lisle makes a cheap tool for removing lock rings for fuel tanks. Just needed to remove the bolts and tip the front of the bed up and back so that I had access to the fuel pump.

    Awesome! You actually made it look so easy that I could do it! (We all know I can't!) I had the "money light" come on the other day (P0455), and I cleared the code and we'll see if it comes back. If so, I just hope it's the purge valve or vent valve solenoids, but with my luck, well...you know.

    If you think a fuel pump/lock ring looks pretty bad on an 09 in 2015, I just did my girls 08 in 2021 lol. The fuel supply line had rusted completely through and getting the vent line off was a pisser. The lock ring though was the bane of my existence.... Penetrating fluid once a day for a week, air hammered the piss out of it, bought a lock ring tool and used my 1/2" impact to beat on it until I rounded the tool out. I finally got that damn thing off though. Tank strap bolt just spun in it's hole, tank strap disintegrated when I try to put leverage on it. Had to use my angle grinder to cut the bolt and my air hammer to punch the rest of the bolt and nut up through the tube on the frame. I told her I'm never working on it again and she needs to get a new truck.

    Everybody complained when they made the field pump module out of plastic now they're metal That's a problem honestly the plastic ones are better just break the lines off the top Drop the tank Fish the broken pieces out of the fuel lines Unscrew the seal ring off the top of the plastic tank nothing rusty Point the bed Yes for guys That don't have a transmission Jack And a lyft😢 I've been working on cars for 25 years in California I really Have a high respect for you guys in the rust belt There's no old cars on the East Coast

    @19:14 "Watch your face"
    I don't squint anymore when I hear this... Too used to being on the other end of the camera. I'm really gonna get it when someone standing next to me says it...
    And as long as I remember to do so, I anti-seize almost everything. Once a rusty bolt has been reinstalled without it, and re-rusts into place... it AIN'T NEVER coming back out in one piece.

    Don’t have a Chevy or a evap /pump problem (that I know of)just looked interesting & for all I know that’s something I need to look at. 1996 3.4L,V6 Toyota 4Runner 2X4 sr5.pops was a.salsman & I took woodshop in high school.hindsight is 20-20.been stepping outside of my comyzone on repairs lately.& don’t nescisarily have proper tools,BUT,learning alot as I go ,acquiring tools as I can afford them, borrowing some here and there in the meantime.getting a 18$ scan toolfrom Amazon.think it will help big time.been diagnoseing blind between trips to parts shops /repair shops .had to do all this.the. My local shade tree guy moved. I don’t know any one that I trust or can afford. I’m getting there. Good video. You make things look easy. I know this is an old video but maybe you’ll see this. I’ll subscribe. Hope it helps a little. Hey to Anna
