    Did the same fix 3 yrs ago ,pulled off the bed and did from the top. Got my neighbors and put the bed on saw horses. Replaced fuel pump, cleaned rust and mud off bed rails. Next day up and running. I'm 70 yrs old.
    Bed was ready to pick off in 45 minutes.

    So impressed - working overhead on a fuel system and totally avoided gas running down into the armpit. Trust me, you'll only make that mistake once. Also, I've been out of the business a long time, but even with the headache of keeping the fuel pump rod in place I'd much rather change a 2 bolt mechanical pump bolted to the engine. Yes, I know with FI you can't do that any more, but what used to be a simple task is now a project.

      Getting that rod to stay in place while you slip it in at an angle and hope that it goes under the cam lever, that's a royal pain. "Just pack it with grease", yeah right. The only way I was able to do it on my dad's C10 was with a screwdriver and luck. Neither of these was as much fun as doing a diesel pump on a 1980 Cadillac Seville which was mounted in the middle of the intake. It was big, cumbersome, heavy and had a precision machined rod that you had to line up absolutely perfectly to fit into the notch in the intake. My dad and I did it when I was maybe 18 years old and it was an absolute bear. Every few months, one of the pushrods would punch a hole in a rocker arm and I would have to remove the valve cover and replace it. GM decided to convert a gasoline engine to a diesel engine. It had ice cold a/c and digital a/c controls way before that became mainstream later on. You would be lucky to hit 55-60mph, the thing was a slug. I slammed the door accidentally on my thumb and it was like a locking bank vault door closing on your hand.

      @jameslong3351 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lucidbarrier On the chevy small blocks with the fuel pump on the engine you could run a bolt in from the front of engine block that would hold the push rod in place while removing the pump.

    Last time I did one of those we pulled the bed off, 6 bolts for bed, three screws for filler neck and a plug for the light harness. With the lift I suppose you could go either way but it's pretty nice to stand over the work and not worry about tank straps or a 3/4 full tank.

    Col. Kilgore said "That gasoline smell, Smells, Like victory." When taking off that rusty metal ring and not damaging the tank, that smell is victory. It is a shame to look at these vehicles back home rotting to the ground in under 10 years. I do not miss working on Central NY cars, especially in the wintertime. I really like the camera angles you use to show the viewer the trouble spots.

    I've run into the aluminum drive shaft problem you showed a time or two, saved the customer a bunch money by cutting aluminum plugs same size as u-joint caps, center up the joint like usual and then weld the plugs to the yoke ears covering the caps and trapping so they can't walk either direction. Obviously you need a way to weld aluminum. I use my spool gun attachment on my Miller mig machine. Good video.

    Quick tip: When cleaning around the hole after the pump is out, take a partially deflated balloon and hold it in the hole. Then pump up the balloon with compressed air till it seals around the whole. More of the balloon should be in the tank than out. Tie or pinch it off. Then do your cleaning without worrying about getting junk in the tank. When done just deflate the balloon to remove. Works like a charm. Don’t pop the balloon of course.
    Got the idea for that from a local luthier refinishing an acoustic guitar without messing up the inside of the guitar.

    • @tomtheplummer7322
      @tomtheplummer7322 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...my luck the balloon would slip into the tank. 🤷‍♂️😏

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomtheplummer7322, I've actually had that happen. The tanks aren't that deep and the hole is fairly large. A set of needle nose pliers got ahold of the balloon nub thing pretty easily for me to pull it back up to seal the hole. It's also why you want a partially inflated balloon to begin with. If it does fall in it will float.

      he made a couple of pillars out of Railway sleepers and dropped a couple more on top, from the bank to the tops of the sleepers, so he could drive out (carefully) to the ends of the sleepers (you call them ties I think). So that most of the underside of the car was accessible.

    Thanks for a real world review of a tool. There's a lot of "tool addicts" and tool reviewers that don't seem to put them to work. They're more for the DIYer or collectors. Had my bluepoint ratchet wrenches for over 15yrs and still going strong, in a shop environment. GW sucked back then but now I would recommend them as a budget alternative. Great video.

    @33:40, you can see the clip is actually cracked in half. You can see it just as Eric moves the clip back into position - a small crack opens up a little past the 3 o'clock position. The rest of the clip is literally being held by corrosion. I'm suspecting the loose part of the clip is going to go flying when the shaft is spinning and the rear end hits a good bump or pot hole. But it's probably ok because there is so much corrosion between the bearing caps and the aluminum they will have to be beat out with Big Nasty!

    My favorite ratchet wrenches are from Platinum/ATD and Tekton. The Tekton ones were cheap, but they have taken a beating and when they do break, I can’t really blame them. The ATD ones have not failed, but then again I baby them - I have the Tekton ones to abuse.

    • @oldskipper1394
      @oldskipper1394 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I too have gone to Tekton ratchet wrenches. I bought a set of the 1/4" drive sockets for work { HVAC/R } because they were cheap, and really liked them. A channel called Project Farm did a comparison of ratchets, including Tekton and Snap On, and the Snap On failed the Test to Failure test before the Tekton. For the money they're great!

    I just replaced the original fuel pump in my 2010 GMC Sierra. I am amazed it made it so long. Im up in Michigan and the metal elbow on the pump for the supply finally rusted enough to spring a leak. The pump still worked fine. Since i pulled the tank I replaced the pump, lock ring and the fuel line just to increase my chances that I wouldn't have to pull the tank out again. 😂

    One question. Have you ever applied some fluid film up there on the lock ring at time of repair to at least slow the rot or is it not worth the trouble since it sits in the 25+ year crater of engineering obstinance and it'll rot anyway?
    Truly a shame that more people don't spray the underneath of their vehicles.

    • @clintsmith559
      @clintsmith559 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I usually just greased the crap out of it. Preserves the ring and the retainers, and made the retaining ring easier to lock.

    • @COBRO98
      @COBRO98 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally I'm the first to get mad at enginerds but that rusting isn't their fault as much as it is the owner's, they're driving on salt & sand 24/7 365 and never oil spray. There is no way any steel is going to survive that. Meanwhile go South and you'll see the same fuel pump and retainer sitting fine for 25 years with little to no rust
