Great videos Eric! My tip to you is to use a toothbrush instead of the rag. They do a great job and looks brand new when your finished. On fly by wire cars, make sure the ignition is off before moving the throttle plate. Also don't forget to use nitrile gloves when working to stop the skin from absorbing grease dirt and chemicals.
You all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Bronson Titus thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Wow... Thank you. I've been wondering why my pedal was sticking for the last three years. Didn't think about looking at the throttle since it felt like the problem was the pedal sticking. Awesome advice.
I appreciate very much the advice given in this video, and especially to those commenters who warned about not manually moving the butterfly valve on a drive-by-wire car, like my '03 Accord. I never would have known that could be harmful to it, so a big "thank you" to all who mentioned it!
HOWDY ERICTHECARGUY...I have a 92 crown vic lx, with 280,000kms on it. had the throttle sticking problem, didn't know what it was causing it to hesitate and even stall on the QE2 in Alberta. Saw your vid, man that throttle was completely covered in thick gunk, cleaned it out like you showed, and it works great now, now I have to change the belt, followed your instructions, another triumph, thanks eh!
This is especially helpful and even important with newer drive-by-wire throttle bodies. Since they're actuated by a small motor or similar, and tend to be taking the place of idle air control valves and the like, they cause a lot of odd problems when sticking. One problem being stalling only when starting the car warm. The throttle will get stuck closed and starve the engine. It also tends to make throttle response feel even more delayed than most drive-by-wire throttles are from the factory. Great tip Eric!
Good use of Eng language - "ridgeline" is a keyword denoting that the juncture where the t-body platge meets the housing is precisely where the problem lies - carbon buildup at that point - thx for the tutorial
Good video, the best product to use to clean out throttle bodies is the ThreeBond Engine Conditioner. Heat the engine to running temp first then turn off the engine and take the hose from the throttle body. Spray the engine conditioner into the throttle body and it will foam up and clean all gummed up areas. It also lubricates the throttle body. Start the engine and spray the rest of the can through and it will clean the complete combustion chamber. It is a complete carbon clean in a can.
@tonytiger33 If you don't have a check engine light start with the basics like plugs and a fuel filter. DON'T start replacing sensors as they probably have nothing to do with it. You might also do a power balance test to see if you can find a particular cylinder that is at fault, I've done a video on this if that helps.
Great job Eric. On my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, I replaced the MAP due to OBD code. My acceleration increase and overall performance was great. Two days later, I got a P0106 code (MAP performance). Cleaning the throttle body was one of the suggestions. In fact, cleaning the throttle body every 30,000 miles or so helps. I can't remember the last time I did this on my SUV (205,000). So I was looking for a video that shows how to clean the throttle body without removing it (I'm not as young as I used to be :)). Thanks again for a quick and concise video.
Thank you. I have a Toyota Avalon 2004 that had a sticking accelerator. I saw how you did it. I did it too. My car looked a bit different under the hood. I am an old guy who used to take out the carburetor and clean it 50 years ago. I didn't realize that the same type technology was in modern cars. I didn't even have to use a tooth brush to fix the problem. Thanks again.
I knew a Ford dealer that used to do this to Problem Lincoln and ford Mercury that were on the edge of warrantee because of bearing knock. Ford would call the noisy engine normal. Well was not normal after that ''' 80FNot so sure if it would work on this application thought although id would solve the throttle body issue. 8)

Hey Eric...excellent video once again! You've inspired me and others to start making videos, so much so that I made my first Push to Start Button Auto DIY Tutorial! Thanks so much for the inspiration, and keep doing what you're doing! You're great!
Hi Eric, your videos are awesome! I usually use Seafoam instead of TB cleaner and spray about 1/8 of a can in the intake as well. I leave it for about 10 minutes then start it up and let it run through. I've heard that this can actually plug your catalytic converter. I've also heard that it cleans the catalytic? What's your thought on this?
Tobias Jn. Pierre on new cars you turn the ignition on but dont start the car then have some body press the gas peddle and it will open . or you can remove the throttle body from the engine
Thank God for this video, clear flood mode, never heard of that! Sure thing though, started up after a few seconds and a few trys of flooring the pedal. Thank you!
Thanks Eric. great job and thanks for the "over-spraying" warning. My usual method would be to use 1/2 a can just to "make-sure." A waste of product and not necessary.
I would personally recommend removing the throttle body completely. I remove all electronics (IAC, TPS, etc..) and clean all the passages. The TB cleaner shouldn't damage the sensors and valves (IAC) but if I'm cleaning something I'm doing it 100%. Definitely pay attention to removing all the buildup around the edges of the butterfly valve, that's where it will stick the most. And don't use anything abrasive to clean internally, a nylon bristle brush is ok, NO steel wire!! Now if you are still having a problem with throttle response then I'd look at the throttle cable. Just like the hood latch cable it's braided wire that will stretch and when it's stretched the butterfly in the TB won't fully open. There are the cheap zip tie tricks, but just replace the cable, not worth a snapped cable at WOT!!
Really good advice! Thank u so much! My ,2091 dodge neon started stalling a month ago while! Usually after I drove it 15 miles it would stall and stutter a few times, then straiten back out And drove fine! It did that a few weeks then today while I was driving home it just died, while driving down the road, and won't start back now! It cranks but won't start! TPS, throttle position sensor, cannot be cleaned. They are a sealed unit. They should not be taken apart and cleaned. They are a precision sensor and should not be messed with.
really, in the last 25 years I never see battery get so foul. Eric must be doing something WRONG. Batterys don't vent and leak like the 70's, how can that corrosion be normal?
I just used rubbing alcohol and Air Flow Sensor cleaner. And some Q-tips and paper towels. It's best to do it when you don't have to drive anywhere afterward that day. So do it at the end of the day and let your car sit overnight before starting so the chemicals can evaporate and throttle can air dry overnight. Otherwise you'll take a chance of trouble starting and/or the chemicals flowing your exhaust.
Thanks for the video! Had a check engine on my wife's Hyundai and it was the throttle body. Gave it a clean with the video (was my first time doing this) and the car runs great and check engine light is off. Thanks!
Jer M area has fumes known to the state of California to cause cancer, it says so near the entrance of the boarding gate in the airport, what is the point?!?!
Raul, before you give this advice, you should consider BMW, and maybe some other brands. If you disconnect the battery, you have to re enter the radio security code before the radio works again. What about the readers of this who don't have their radio code and don't realize they will need it after batt disconnect? You can hook up a temporary 12v supply before you disconnect the battery to save the radio code if you had the knowledge. I wouldn't disconnect battery for most throttle body cleanings.
Arthur Swails Really? BMW's are so dumb you have to enter the code everytime you disconnect the battery? Well on Audi's only if you put the radio in another car only then you enter the code.
Man, it don't take much for guys to go Dirty on each other over an innocent WD-40 comment. I don't think that is what Eric meant when he said "Stay Dirty". Love Eric's video and also the viewers comments. Thanks Eric.
I've often used an old toothbrush to help clean small/hard to get areas in conjunction with various cleaners, it helps to remove the harder to clean debrits etc... 👍 😎
If you have trouble removing the rubber snorkel, heat up the rubber snorkel up with a heat gun or hairdryer, then wiggle it back and forth until it comes off
Opening the throttle manually on some cars, especially those with Drive by wire can cause them to lose the idle settings. its best to remove the throttle and spray from both sides without moving the plate.
Joe Guzman, I have a quick question. I changed the spark plugs and I unplugged the throttle body to clean on my ‘08 Sienna, now the car doesn’t even idle. It runs for 5 seconds then shuts off. Do I have to reset and relearn the throttle body?
Dear Eric, Before asking my question, I would like to thank you for your videos. I have watched them all and I am one of your video fans. Can I spray lacquer thinner instead of spray throttle cleaner your mentioned. Lacquer thinners are much cheaper to purchase and I have used them cleaning gummy stuff and works real good. My concern is whether Lacquer thinner can cause and internal problem for the engine or the injectors. Thank you
Lacquer thinner will destroy any plastics/polymers as well as lubrication/seals on the throttle body shaft. It could also damage the TPS/IAC or other sensors. I would not use it myself, but if you have no choice I would be very careful with it. And I certainly would not spray it down into the throttle body/intake manifold.
Simple but effective. I removed my car's EGR system as well, now I don't have to mind about things like this anymore, well at least not as often as before..
HOW COOL ! gotta love old saabs, if it was running good but had been sitting 10 years the first thing i would check is did the fuel filter plug from 10 years of corrosion .. i am not 100 % familiar with old saabs fuel filters. IF it is getting fuel to the engine , then make sure it has spark at the plugs. i would bet it is a simple fix to get it running . GOOD LUCK
dont. dont do that. lol things like TB and MAF are special. Dont wanna spray anything that leaves residue. WD40 leaves residue and will build up and possibly do damage to the motor. Besides, TB cleaner is just as expensive as WD40, no sense in NOT using the right stuff :P
OG Milkbag Uhhh, yeah, just spray a lubricant into the throttle of your engine, sending it directly into your engine. Would you open up your engine and spray wd40 to clean off oil? no...
Appreciate your straightforward directions and clear video on car care. Your piece on throttle body cleaning was especially helpful. Thanks much for your efforts!! You saved me big $$$. Owner: 2005 Mazda Tribute S V6 4 x 4 2007 Toyota Solara V6 Convertible KND Northern NJ
Nikita Wilcox , That's true. I heard that on cars model with drive-by-wire we have to step on the gas to open the throttle, instead. Otherwise , the computer will not function well. Can someone confirm this ? many thanks.
AgentJucey Electronic throttle bodies. They usually have a module and/or driven by gears electronically. DO NOT MANUALLY OPEN THEM! They will mess up. Ask me how I know!
AgentJucey Drive by wire means there is no mechanical connection from the accelerator to the throttle body. It's done by electronics through your wiring harness, thus drive by wire. It's been used by commercial airliners for many years and is a proven technology.
Eric And Chris are really good friends actually. They both know what they are doing and honestly Eric is probably more knowledgeable seeing as he is older
South Main Auto Repair No I just mean experience wise :) I watched your video of the dodge with electrical issues, that was pretty good :) You should try to promote yourself and get yourself out there!
Hey just a note for any ford users. This video is 100% correct in every way just for the ford throttle bodies that “coating” is just a load of bs that makes it gunk up quicker nothing to worry about any normal throttle body cleaner will work.
Video's much appreciated. I'm not exactly a car guy, and this helped me get the job done. For what it's worth, I live in NY and bought aerosol TB cleaner no problem.
You give me a lot of useful info. A big thank you to Mr, ERICtheCARguy. Explanation easy to understand theory & practical. Once again double thumbs up to you for your excellent presentation.
Man to I ever wish I had seen your video 2 years ago. I had a sweet 1998 Buick with the 3.3 or 3.6 liter engine. I was getting run away acceleration and the local garage decided it was a manifold leak and blew the engine up trying to prove that theory. It turned out to be a dirty throttle body but by the time they found that I had a knock on the crank. I sold the car a few weeks later. It was one sweet unit. 6k miles. Ran like new, spotless. I only drove it in the summer. I was not going to throw a new rebuilt in it.
I just read this somewhere that will help clear up things about cleaning the fords throttle.... Fords throttle bodies are coated and the aggressive agents and those solvents will dissolve the finish and ruin the throttle body Those coated Ford throttle body's aren't supposed to be cleaned at all. An Induction service using BG cleaner is safe. Hope that helps..
Great tip on "clear flood mode" ! It is amazing how many people do NOT know this tip !! I think you meant to say not to clean INSIDE Ford throttle bodies, meaning past the throttle plates. Scanner Danner and I have a difference of opinion on this, and you and I are on the same side ! I always clean all external linkages and pivot points
If small motor is energised ie, still plugged in , gear reduction set and massive torque may remove end of cleaning finger in ETB , may want to unplug first also possibly remove negative off battery... good luck
On most OBD II compliant vehicles, when the computer is given a 100% signal from the TPS, the injectors are turned off entirely, so that no more fuel can be put into the cylinders, and as much air is received as possible. This allows the engine to get rid of the excess fuel/carb cleaner, hence the name "clear flood mode".
Eric, newer cars with electronic throttle you have to use a slightly different technique since there is no manual linkage to open the throttle. I was also told if you manually open up these throttles, you can screw up the computer. You need a helper and with the ignition on on (car not running), have them press their foot on the accelerator. This will open up the butterfly.
for cars with no throttle cable, you must disconnect the battery before doing this and then after cleaning, wait 30 minutes so the spray can dry up so the engine wont be hard to start
Thanks Eric! I just cleaned mine out & the throttle is nice & smooth. It was slightly stuck a few days ago and then my IACV started acting up- I'm guessing the gunk from the throttle body may have gotten into the IACV & fouled it up
With the exceptions that you have mentioned. Throttle Body Cleaner and MAF Sensor Cleaners are just expensive gimmicks. Simply use a good quality Non-Chlorinated Brake Cleaner. Best to do on a warm day and a warm (not hot) engine...since residues and gums, oil and carbon tend to be somewhat looser and easier to remove. A Toothbrush (not wire) and some Q-Tips also helps. I use a fresh rag too...after each and every spray down while cleaning. My rule of thumb is that it must be something that dries fast and leaves no residues...Brake Cleaner fits the bill very well! Common Sense is never out of Style!!!
Hi...Eric, I did a Throttle Body cleaning with Air Intake Cleaner on my 2005 RAV4 with 196k mi. I found it was strange that the TB was in the back at bottom. It was the 1st time that I cleaned the TB on the RAV4. I sprayed the IAC cleaner and wiped around the IAC round plate and the was very dirty (black) varnish. I also sprayed inside around the TB. Waited after 30 min and restarted the vehicle. It was hesitating to start for 5 sec. and then engine started. I noticed the idle was at 2000 RPM. I let the vehicle run for a few minutes and revved the engine a few times and it dropped down to 1500 rpm. But wouldn't go down to 750-800rpm after engine reached normal temperature. So I decided to drive around the block for a few minutes, hoping to burn off the cleaning agent inside the TB. When I come to a stop, the RPM stays at 1500. What could be the problem that's causing the high idle at 1500rpm? I've read a few blogs and they said I should drive the vehicle for a few days for the ECU to relearn of the clean IAC/TB. Is it ok to drive while idle is at 1500 RPM, until all the IAC cleaner burns off? Please advise. Thank you.
+TIMMY LAW disconnect the negative side of the battery for 5-10 minutes then reconnect it. This reset the system and force the car to "relearn" the air/fuel intake. What you are seeing is the system still running with the old settings with its dirty throttle. However, since you posted a month ago, after a whole month the car should have already relearned itself. Best of luck.
My friends Bronco with the 4.3L V-6 had the worst throttle at idle and low speeds! I still have 6 cans he left here trying to get it running.. I don't think he ever figured it out and messed up the engine and junked it. LOL he knew enough about cars to seriously mess them up and loved trying to tweak stuff that worked fine. One way of learning how things work I guess.
It worked like a charge you are a great teacher thanks, I had this problem after changing my serpentine belt and automatic tensioner and pulley idler which I also watch how to change from your channel my engine light even went off thanks again.
Eric you are right on everything I've seen of yours but I would do this different. I use CRC products whenever I can. If you ever see what happens when throttle body cleaner does to plastic when they come in contact with each other the plastic will crack. Most intake manifolds are plastic. I've always just taken the tb off cleaned it and covered tps sensor and actuator motor so that they don't get wet.
Doing this stopped my car from stalling while coming to a stop. Best thing ever. 👍🏻🇦🇺
If it is stalling you also need to clean your MAFS.
That's what I wanted to hear!!! Also before you go wild sand all your connections.

TPS, throttle position sensor, cannot be cleaned. They are a sealed unit. They should not be taken apart and cleaned. They are a precision sensor and should not be messed with.
Butthurt
And false
HOLY CORRODED BATTERY TERMINAL BATMAN!!!
Your positive battery terminal looks pretty bad and needs to be cleaned.
really, in the last 25 years I never see battery get so foul. Eric must be doing something WRONG. Batterys don't vent and leak like the 70's, how can that corrosion be normal?
Clean the terminals, wires, etc.. and put a thin layer of dielectric grease over everything. I've never had a hint of corrosion.
PAying attention to the video, we know it isnt Eric's car AND we also cant assume he hasnt made a ton of videos about this car specifically.
galvanic reaction, maybe the wrong type of metal on the terminal clamp.
Thanks!
Everything is illegal in california....
Richard Cowtails buds not
Yep that's why Cali sucks! I'm here, should really move, I know.
You can always move to someplace dirty and unhealthy.
Jer M area has fumes known to the state of California to cause cancer, it says so near the entrance of the boarding gate in the airport, what is the point?!?!
If you breathe, that will be a $1,000 fine.
Nice video
They sell throttle body cleaners at your local Autozone or Oreilly auto parts. Stuff works great. Always disconnect battery when working on a engine.
Most cases but not always I would say...
That happened on my acura, had to go to the dealer to get the code :/ but hey they'll need to disconnect the battery eventually
😎
that's ok for mechanical throttles isn't it problematic for electronically controlled throttles to move them manually?
Dusty Korpse Yes, read the description, he specifically states this procedure is for direct mechanical TBs and not be used for DBW or E-TBs
Dusty Korpse just get someone to press accelerator pedal it will open
Paddy Wynne not so simple, it is electric and the motor must be running.
@@billwilson6096 if you are cleaning your etb while its on say goodbye to your finger smh
krodie you sent your warning to the wrong B. W. I’ve learned over the years to be careful where I stick my fingers.
1:39 my dad gave me same advice when I was 12, Thanks dad.
Or you can get a red rag and clean 🙊🙊🙊
to clean you can use throttle body & air intake cleaner (stp) or mass air flow sensor cleaner auto zone
If you have trouble removing the rubber snorkel, heat up the rubber snorkel up with a heat gun or hairdryer, then wiggle it back and forth until it comes off
+Rob Reinold You sir are crazy
Opening the throttle manually on some cars, especially those with Drive by wire can cause them to lose the idle settings.
its best to remove the throttle and spray from both sides without moving the plate.
Joe Guzman, I have a quick question. I changed the spark plugs and I unplugged the throttle body to clean on my ‘08 Sienna, now the car doesn’t even idle. It runs for 5 seconds then shuts off. Do I have to reset and relearn the throttle body?
Dear Eric,
Before asking my question, I would like to thank you for your videos.
Thank you
BOOM!
@ Dacke,
Thank you for your kindness and sincerely advice..
Dacke Hey, i just said that.

what???
What's nice about my Chevy is that I can just remove the throttle body with 2 10mil bolts and clean it off the engine.
GOOD LUCK
That battery terminal needs help😢 its cry my boiii 😂
When the world was in peace
can i use a can of buttery non stick baking spray? i swear some of the questions in the comments....
lmao!
J k Glover Not too worried about gluten, but I need Kosher TB cleaner...😂
Well you can... But should you?
Some where out there there are angels singing praises.......... thanks a heap.
Your vids. ROCK!!!!
I’m in New York and I was able to pick up an aerosol can of throttle body cleaner from my local advanced. Thanks for the video!
that positive terminal!!!!!
Fucking right dude.i just kept looking at it trying to watch eric screw with the trottle
Thanks EricTheCarGuy....stay dirty man!
i just used WD-40
that wont work thats designed to lubricate not clean
nice try
dont. dont do that.
lol things like TB and MAF are special. Dont wanna spray anything that leaves residue. WD40 leaves residue and will build up and possibly do damage to the motor. Besides, TB cleaner is just as expensive as WD40, no sense in NOT using the right stuff :P
Josh Johnson thank you for trying to make me look stupid by just using something i had around the house. a little wd40 isnt gunna hurt anything
OG Milkbag Uhhh, yeah, just spray a lubricant into the throttle of your engine, sending it directly into your engine. Would you open up your engine and spray wd40 to clean off oil? no...
Nice to se eric From seven years ago! I have being watching his videos all this time!
Hope he's still doing them when he's old and gray.
Appreciate your straightforward directions and clear video on car care. Your piece on throttle body cleaning was especially helpful. Thanks much for your efforts!! You saved me big $$$.

DONT DO THIS ON DRIVE BY WIRE CARS! it will mess stuff up!
Nikita Wilcox , That's true. I heard that on cars model with drive-by-wire we have to step on the gas to open the throttle, instead. Otherwise , the computer will not function well. Can someone confirm this ? many thanks.
Budi R Yes, Budi, I've heard that. Watch this video for more info. It explains it. Good luc.
What's drive by wire?
AgentJucey Electronic throttle bodies. They usually have a module and/or driven by gears electronically. DO NOT MANUALLY OPEN THEM! They will mess up. Ask me how I know!
AgentJucey Drive by wire means there is no mechanical connection from the accelerator to the throttle body. It's done by electronics through your wiring harness, thus drive by wire. It's been used by commercial airliners for many years and is a proven technology.
This Eric Guy has dangerous side burn's.
Chrisfix is the type of guy you want to get car reparations and tips from he knows what hes doing, i dont trust this guy. I recommend chrisfix better
Have you seen my channel yet by any chance?
Eric And Chris are really good friends actually. They both know what they are doing and honestly Eric is probably more knowledgeable seeing as he is older
I don't think age can dictate wisdom...
South Main Auto Repair No I just mean experience wise :) I watched your video of the dodge with electrical issues, that was pretty good :) You should try to promote yourself and get yourself out there!
Oh I see haha... well I can only do what I can ya know, unless you know a way to promote I think it is more of a wait and hope people find you game.
Hey just a note for any ford users. This video is 100% correct in every way just for the ford throttle bodies that “coating” is just a load of bs that makes it gunk up quicker nothing to worry about any normal throttle body cleaner will work.
I know this videos 9 years old but it’s definitely still the most informative one out for here for people looking to do it
Video's much appreciated.
THANKS ERIC WAS WONDERING WHY MY PEDAL IS STICKING WILL TRY CLEANING THE THROTTLE BODY
First time bumping into your channel, and this was a very useful, to-the-point video. Thanks for putting it out there! Liked & subscribed
It's amazing how dirty this gets. I clean the throttle body on my cars a couple times a year.
I just read this somewhere that will help clear up things about cleaning the fords throttle....
Fords throttle bodies are coated and the aggressive agents and those solvents will dissolve the finish and ruin the throttle body
Those coated Ford throttle body's aren't supposed to be cleaned at all. An Induction service using BG cleaner is safe.
Hope that helps..
Your video was helpful and it was straight to the point. My car is running smoother.
Thanks Eric The Car Guy for your simple and informative video on throttle body cleaning.
Oldie but goodie always looking for my answers in your video library. Thanks Eric, Ive been subbed since geeze when you were in your garage.
Eric, I also use a tooth brush to reach into the throttle body and scrub the carbon loose..
Couldn't start it afterwards. The clear flood mode thingy worked for me. Thanks for tip!
This will open up the butterfly.
for cars with no throttle cable, you must disconnect the battery before doing this and then after cleaning, wait 30 minutes so the spray can dry up so the engine wont be hard to start
thxs
I do this every other oil change just for extra maintenance great video
Eric the car guy is a genious, my car it's running fine thanks to you man!!
I guess you could take that opportunity to clean the IAC valve as well. Could you demonstrate that as well
My friends Bronco with the 4.3L V-6 had the worst throttle at idle and low speeds!
Timeless video. And here to do the job and see how to. Thank you Eric.
