Glad this came across my TH-cam feed. I have a twin turbo 2018 Mustang and it’s 10R80 messed up on its 3rd pass down the strip. It freewheeled on the launch then crunched back into gear when it idled down. Sticky tires always finds the weak spot!
thanks for the tear down, Iv'e got one of these transmissions in a ford ranger in Australia, with a 2lt bi-turbo diesel engine. Fingers crossed. hahaha
This is third utube search I've done for the 10R80, this time I was looking at the Ford Ranger 3.2L diesel and NOW this video comes up... Wow. Yes I'm in the USA. I'm now glad the 3.2L is not available here.
Very nice explanation, but tell me why any tranny would not have a dip stick? I think this is like buying a truck without a steering wheel . 55000$ dollars and no easy way to check fluid level. Thanks again.
Hey, I don't even go here but this was entertaining as hell. What could the driver have been doing to cause that? And on every single, last clutch? Or is this maybe not the driver's doing?
Is it ok if for example I have a transmission like that and I want to fabricate metal oil pan using stainless steel with exact same specs would it still work ?
I'm not a mechanic but would suggest being VERY careful when setting down and pulling apart the various components during this disassembly. My 2019 F150 has been at Future Ford in Concord CA. for 3-4 weeks with a 4th gear slipping. 1st time the dealer fixed was 1st gear shifting into neutral at apprx 55k miles and now 86k miles my 4th gear slipped and 3rd started to go just before i dropped off. The trans.overheated on me twice. i called dealer to let them know and becuase no dip stick i cannot check fluid easily they checked for me and said fluid was fine.... After watching your video i see now where the clutch packs are located and have much more info to talk to dealership trans tech about. Ford warranty will only let dealer do code check program and check and code check and inspect and replace parts for code. this is BS! I will be calling FORD customer service to figure out why the techs cannot do a proper repair job the 1st time.
Hey Excellent video breakdown of this tranny. And yes you are very calm disassembling. It’s beyond me why they use any O-Rings in this since it’s emerged in fluid
I have a ranger raptor fitted with the 10R80 she runs fine, but if you don't drive her for several days, when you select drive it can upto 15 seconds to drive it will only creep, is this common to thease boxes, or is it a problem waiting to happen the vehicle has done 19000 miles

How many miles did this Transmission have on it? I'm getting these same shift problems in my 2021 Ranger only 46,000 miles and looking for info about service bulletins, recalls and warranty. More so what totally should be done by Ford. Have heard talks that there is a classaction lawsuit going on with these transmission?
So what caused this transmission to fail? I see slipping clutches as you pointed out. Could it have been just too much horsepower that exceed the factory's OEM design?
I completely enjoyed this tutorial, thanks, I have a 19 Ranger with this in it, yes this gearbox is problematic, it's new and has teething issues, we JQPublic are the test bed. When it works correctly it is butter smooth and at 80 mph my little 4 banger is only turning an RCH over 2 grand. Can these gearboxes be built bullet proof? Cause I really like the truck. Did u happen the check the bushing in the cdf drum? They slip and cause a ton of problems the 10r80s, 10r60s and the 10r140s do it made a ton of cash warranty on them so far
Great stuff, yeah, I did many M1 tank transmissions, and many others, I'll be honest, I think the newer belt transmissions work better overall, I own several and the cars just feel a lot better, I do have a mustang with the 10 speed and to me it feels clunkier, the continuous up and down shifting just becomes a pain, it tries to stay on higher gears to keep rpm down for fuel economy and it bogs down the engine and creates droning quiet a bit. On the belt driven is very smooth up or down on the other cars. Just my 1 cent, cuz I owe the other cent to the IRS!
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 thank you for the quick reply. Great information you passed along. Even a novice like me understood it. My Ford Explorer ST is currently at the dealership with slipping, jerky gears. I don’t abuse the SUV therefore I’m hoping it’s a solenoid issue and not something more internal.
The 10r80 is garbage, and this is well known at this point. I had my transmission replaced in my 2020 F150 at 26,000 miles. Under warranty fortunately, but there's no excuse for that kind of failure at that mileage. Boosting the power of the vehicle isn't the issue. Ford didn't design this transmission correctly, end of story. This kind of nonsense is exactly why class action lawsuits exist, and I do believe Ford may be facing one due to this transmission. Valve bodies, CDF drum issues, and so on. These transmissions are absolute garbage.
Awesome video and install video as well! Once you fill the 10r80 with the fluid where did you fill it up to? Might’ve overfilled since it feels like it loses pressure and the rpm flutters. Could it possibly be low fluid as well? Because I did put 11 quarts in it too
I fill mine with 7 qts first start then check. I like to idle till warm and adjust fluid as I go. I set mine at the 60 mark when at full operating temperature.
What about hot spots on clutch backing plates, do you replace those too? I've currently got a 6l80 torn down that has a hot spot on the 3-5-R clutch backing plate.

The "gears" are the different results of planetary gearset manipulation. Planetary gearsets have 3 main parts, the ring gear, the carrier & the sun gear. The input usually comes in via the sun gear, and the output on the ring gear. The clutches are responsible for either holding, or releasing the various parts of the planetary. You really need to see it in motion to understand fully. But it's all about power flow, how it's being sent through the transmission, which planets it is or isn't flowing through, which thus creates a gear ratio.
it's the result of throwing a bunch of power adders on the motors to already high octane cars and doing zero to help support the rest of the car. Or its people messing with the tuning and transmission who aught not to be, but neverthless, can't just increase power by 30% give or take and not do any work to anything else. No one builds anymore, they just slap something on the motor crank it up and break things.
If you watched the video where this trans was removed from the car, he mentions it has an edelbrock supercharger on it so stress on the trans is far from factory design.
I've got a 2020gt 10spd auto so far so good I'm going to replace trans fluid soon as I've done the diff so figured may as well so trans car's got 50k on it. I was curious what causes those black scuffs on the disc's that you said have to be replaced, I'm not very familiar with transmissions I just know you put it in gear and go no idea what causes these things you've pointed out. Lol
Did you change the fluid yet,and what's your mileage? I have 76k stock, but my guy won't touch it until 100k as my cars are 80% highway with small amount spirit driving but no racing.

With many new tranny parts today with labor cheaper to buy rebuilt unit from the factory. I new when they came out with that 10 speed it was going to be a mess.
Good to see the 6R80 lead frame gone
Lol
I’m hoping this car was used to just spin at red lights because that’s scary
Was used for drag racing primarily
Its just planatery gear sets not even close to alien tech😂😂😂 pretty sure like over 100 year old technology
I agree it is a dying industry. its called work , technicians are a dying breed, were screwed.
David, didn't your momma ever tell you to close the drawer after you get your utensils? See if you had, you would have never gotten fluid in the drawer. Listen to your Mother. lol

As much as you pay for these new cars, it pisses me off to see them using cheaper materials. Plastic trans pan?? Damn...
It's insane what's being made from plastic now
Bro you gotta get consent first.
