Yes, it's basically the same exact thing, especially since you can use the same program, Mega Log Viewer, to check your logs and verify that your final advance matches what the spark map is commanding (at least when it's supposed to). The only difference is that the titles of each metric will be different. I believe in the ME logs (I use an ME442 in my NB) what you want to compare is "Ign. Adv. Final" against "Ign. Adv. Base Out." If those are different, you can use the other "Ign." metrics to see what's adding or subtracting timing, and verify if you want it to do that or not. During cold start and idle are prime examples of when those 2 values might differ, but they are supposed to.
Love these technical megasquirt videos! I work in an automotive repair shop (we dont tune anything) and have several customers come to us with no start miatas that are on megasquirt. I've been able to use a lot of the info I've learned from your channel to diagnose the issues and at least get them running again, thank you!
Great video! When I first got my turbo car up and running, it was only making 160 hp at 14 psi. After a lot of confusion, we realized we never set base timing 😆 it was off by a lot, and once we set it, the car gained 60 horsepower.
Great video and explanation. Alot of people struggle with that stacking of corrections. This video explained that well! And really opens the eyes to how they work. Thanks for time and effort for the video, and helping a member in the community! You Rock Miata Dad!
Sure, this fix might only be 100% applicable for "11 people" but the tuning explanation and insights will help 1111 of us for sure. Always great to see tuning advice and explanation so please keep it up!
Thank you for explaining the 14 degree mod on a stock ECU vs switching to a stand alone. I was planning the stand alone project for this summer (temporarily on hold because I'm moving to a smog testing state) and have been running 14 on the stock ECU. I was very unsure how I was supposed to proceed, now I know got back to 10 before the install starts.
It’s amazing that you find time to help all of us. You helped this weekend with a few questions too. Thanks man 🤙🏽🔥. You should really set up a remote tuning service. I’d gladly pay you to tune my car once I go stand-alone.
That's where my friends at Speed By Y come in 😊 (See ending screen) I wish I could tune everyone's car myself! But then there would be no more videos 🥲
You just helped me find about 40bhp. I’ve been looking around for ages to find why I was so low on power on my vvt nb on itbs. Thought I had vaccuum leaks and all sorts of random things. Turns out my base timing was quite a long way out. Feels and sounds like a different car altogether now 🙏
Nice skills Greg 👏🏼🤓 it’s so satisfying when you get to the bottom of an elusive problem - and double good when you’re helping someone out. Super informative content as usual. Great work man 🤜🏼🤛🏼
I'm also running no TPS and had idle advance going. Went out and ripped it while datalogging, and surely enough I was stuck at 12 degrees the whole pull. Went in, turned off idle advance and let's just say it finally felt like I had 1.8 the next pull! Thanks greg!
this made me look into the engine state and idle settings a little bit more and found other things that would explain weird behaviour in my setup .. (e.g. why overrun does not engage, it looks like the threashold was set to low in the engine state settings! ) .. thank you for sharing this.. this was awesome!..
Sterling told me he hit you up. I should of looked at his tune myself. We are local to the Jacksonville, NC area until he moves. It's funny how one little thing can change it all, LOL!
Man you keep on doing such a good job with your videos. Many many thanks I am sure a lot of people will benefit from this info. Your videos gave me the info and confidence I needed to decide to turbo my car, best decision ever!
From memory manual miatas just have a on off tps, and autos have an actual position sensor. For a auto tps i think u just repin 2 wires to have it work.
I actually left my Miata on fixed timing on accident before when I put in my mega squirt, I swapped in a 99 engine and was wondering why it felt even slower lmao
Hey Greg, I have a 92’ 1.6 with a 4 to 1 header, a ISR catless catback exhaust, stock intake with AFM still on, I have a mega squirt laying around as I wanna boost the car later on but I wanna keep it NA for now as I autoX and track it. Is it worth throwing on the megasquirt and tune on 93? I don’t know any NA tuners here in Houston Texas
Yeah dude, totally worth it. You'll be able to delete the AFM, dial in the AFR, and re-tune the spark map for 93 octane rather than the conservative 87 octane tune they come with. I wouldn't be surprised to see +10% power over what it's at now
90 NA owner with a SpeedyEFI. Not boosted (yet) but wholly recommend doing the install before the turbo to debug and really understand your engine before boosting. You can have a lot of fun (and frustration) learning how to tune, but it’s worth really learning about your engine.
Unfortunately my miata is dead. Since last Wednesday. Spark and fuel are good. But just turns over and sounds terrible. Last Wednesday I drove it home from work then the next day she wouldn't start. Air, fuel spark and compression all good. Stock ecu.. 1.8 1992 swap
No tps would have meant that it's essentially running in 2D mode and using the 0 tps lines of the spark and fuel maps. This is definitely not the tuners fault here as he probably had no idea the TPS wasn't connected, although one of the 1st things I do is Check the TPS calibration as part of the initial checks. I have run engines without tps but drivability suffers badly.
@@Nebbia_affaraccimiei it still requires a TPS signal regardless of what you use as a load reference. Plenty NA cars are tuned on TPS as load reference especially on ITBs
My tuners was well aware I had no tps, drivability is amazing arguably better than stock now. It’s all about finding a tuner who knows what they’re doing on a no tps car. Remember most cars didn’t have tps for close to 100 years
Hey greg, i drive a 1999 1.6L NB miata with a Kraken low mount and a chinese T25 turbo (in europe the NB's were sold with 1.6's aswell, not sure if you were aware) but since i installed my megasquirt i cant seem to get the VSS to work in tuner studio, the car has ABS. Do i need to run an extra wire or is it just a setting thats configured wrong. Any help would be greatly apreciated
Any remote tuners you would suggest? I cant find anyone in the dallas ft worth area of Texas that will touch a speedyefi unit 😪 90 1.6 5 speed na with custom exhaust. I've tried to play around with a base tune, but i was at 14° timing and set my timing in tuner studio at 14° as well.. It ran terribly 😅 had no idea standalone needs to be at 10. May have to give it another go. Also would i have to run my 93 out and start using 87 just to get a decent base tune done, then switch back to 93 once i got everything running good on 87 and im ready to mess with that set of tables? Or just stick to 93 and tune it from there? Complete noob when it comes to the electronics side of the car 😮💨
That's the base tune from Megasquirt/DIY for their MS3 actually. I run about 12 degrees at idle, so the idle speed timing correction is more effective.
I have a 1.6 with an ihi rhf4 turbo, no intercooler yet but I'm only on 4 psi. I've pulled my timing to 28° at 5,000rpm and still occasionally hear it detonate. I'm going to install an iat sensor this weekend and see what my intake temps are doing. And my base timing is set correctly. Is anyone else running a turbo 1.6 with no intercooler and can I see your timing map to compare to mine?
28 still seems pretty spicy for a non-intercooled turbo system, even if it's low boost. My friends at Gearhead Garage ran a 2560R at 7psi non-intercooled and saw 180° intake temps. I'm running about 32-33° n/a @ wot.
Haha, step 1: have your gf tell you that your audio is bad. Step 2: watch 2 hours of tutorials and learn to edit audio, lol. In a nutshell, use Audacity to run a compressor, EQ to raise lows and highs, and amplify as needed to adjust overall volume +/-. Then in Premiere I use a High Pass Filter @ 100Hz to pretty much eliminate pops from blowing on the mic. (Could also be done in Audacity I'm sure)
Let me be the first to say it: this tuner has messed up this ROM so badly, it's almost as if he started with a safety map, for turbo remote tuning, from an existing ROM, and tried to learn it's way on a customer's car.
Ok weridness you want weirdness you shal get 🤣 my 1997 mk1 1.8 running an me221 with a pre 95 import loom (i had some rather odd wiring to remove and a loom swap was the easy option) When it gets close to up to tempriture ideling plugs 1&4 just stop working completly and it just runs like poop and dies then refuses to restart hot or cold I pull the plugs 2&3 are black and stink of fule plugs 1&4 not a mark on them It works fine when the eng is less than 70c on fresh plugs but soon as it starts getting up to temp it just nopes out and wont start again hot or cold and fouls the plugs again Coil packs havent even got 30 mins run time on them since i changed them timing is fine put in new lead, cas, fulepump, fule pressure reg, injectors and still having issues with it Cant set the base idle speed cause it simply wont get up to temp and stay there only outher thing iv changed about the car is i pulled the maf for an intake temp sensor
Hey Greg, motorsport electronic tuning, Is their software just for their stand-a-lone units? Is there something that is pretty good for the stock ECU's? I know there is HP Tuners out there. The Dragy you talked about, do they have tuning software or do they just pull logs that you would use another software to edit/tune with? I do not have any time under the hood with software. It always been timing lights and carbs.
I have a nb2 with itbs running me221, is there a way I could check for the same problems with meite?
Yes, it's basically the same exact thing, especially since you can use the same program, Mega Log Viewer, to check your logs and verify that your final advance matches what the spark map is commanding (at least when it's supposed to).
